5 out of 5 stars great little book.......2007-09-15

I really like this great little book. I have already tried out four of the recipes and they are simple and quite delicious. Rachael truly does deliver a 30 minute meal. The Shepherd's pie took a little longer, but was really worth it. I have since bought several other cookbooks by Rachael Ray and am very happy with all of them. Many of the recipes use common ingredients that I already have on hand in my kitchen. I recommend this book.

After serching through many recipes for the perfect Macaroni and Cheese, Rachel Ray has created such a recipe. Her Macaroni and Cheese with sausage, tomatoes and cheese is awsome! Easy to assemble and very tasty.

purchased as a gift for my nephew who was recently divorced and wanted some ideas for quick meals for himself.

5 out of 5 stars No such thing as too much Rachael Ray!.......2007-03-09

Rachael Ray's sparkling personality is reflected in this wonderful little book. The recipes are simple and quick, just as you would expect. The book itself is a nice size; the colors, graphics and print are clean and easy to read through. Not only does this book make a nice addition to my collection of cookbooks, but is one that I actually use as more than just decoration.

5 out of 5 stars Make new friends, but keep the old.......2007-02-24

Rachel's genius in top performance. I enjoy new tastes and regional cooking, but when it is cold or dreary, or when you are needing a good old friend, or the party is not just all about the food, this is my pick. The Swedish meatballs has become a personal and family favorite, and that recipe was quickly memorized. This is Rachel Ray at her best.

5 out of 5 stars Zesty Warmth for Winter and Days When You Need Perking Up!.......2007-01-20

I come from the school of thaw it, zap it, and throw some fresh herbs and spices on top. That's how I usually create a meal in 5-10 minutes. Let's face it; I'm impatient when it comes to cooking.

But on certain days, I fondly recall comfort foods that just hit the spot and left me feeling warm all over . . . no matter what the weather was outside. The frozen foods you can buy normally don't convert well into comfort foods. I have a few simple recipes I've developed for myself, but these dishes don't have the complexity of flavors and appearance that would make them feel like REAL comfort foods.

Having been impressed with Ms. Ray's 30-Minute Meals, I decided to see what this book would provide. I was pleasantly surprised by several things:

1. Many of the dishes that I enjoy in restaurants but don't know how to make are included (such as Italian Wedding Soup, Portuguese Sausage and Greens Soup, Creole Chili, Smoky Chili, Everything Jambalaya, and Swedish Meatballs).

2. The complexity of the instructions is just right for my elementary skills. I find myself intimidated by cookbooks that assume I know what I'm doing in the kitchen.

3. Unlike 30-Minute Meals, not every dish features either garlic or garlic and anchovies.

4. There's a rich repertoire of spices, herbs, prepared sauces, alcoholic beverages, and mustards that nicely matches my preference for zest in my food.

5. The dishes are "spiced" up both in terms of ingredients and appearance. For example, she recommends putting sweet pickle relish in your burgers (along with a little onion, cayenne pepper sauce, and steak sauce) while you baste with ketchup and steak sauce. I never would have thought of sweet pickle relish as an ingredient . . . even though I love sweet pickle relish on burgers.

6. Seeing her imagination at work inspires me to toss in even more of my favorite flavors into various dishes. It's like getting your license to drive alone for the first time!

Unlike 30-Minute Meals, Ms. Ray sometimes also gives you an accompanying dish to complement the entree. I think that's a nice touch. After all, a whole meal needs to work together so that you enjoy each item more.

For those who haven't done the dishes before, I especially treasured her advice about what order to do things in. It would be easy for me to forget to start the rice first . . . which would destroy the 30 minute timetable. While I'm not sure that an amateur like me can do all of these dishes in 30 minutes, I felt pretty confident that 40 minutes would always be enough time.

Although I often cook only for myself, if I freeze the left-overs the extra time I spend on these healthy, good-tasting dishes, the extra time I spend won't add more than about five minutes in preparation time per meal. I think that's worth it to step up from the sameness and blandness of thawed, zapped food.

4 out of 5 stars Good cookbook..........2007-01-15

I'm not a RR fan, but I do like this book for basic, easy recipes that can be made pretty quickly. The photos are nice (although not being able to figure out which recipe is on the cover is annoying) and the typeface and layout are easy to read. A good basic book that would be a great gift for beginning cooks and people pressed for time.

4 out of 5 stars ...Wow, that hits the spot..........2006-03-01

I originally purchased this book because I was looking for some new ideas to help make feeding my family a little bit easier. I wasn't disappointed.

My wife and I had tried using one of Rachael's recipes from the tv show. We ended up being very disappointed. A supposedly 30 min meal ended up taking something like 2 1/2 hours to prepare (and I'm not a novice chef).

The first recipe we tried was for the Navy Bean soup. Wow!. It turned out awesome and it actually ended up being close to 30 min in preparation. My 8 yr old son gave it some very high marks. I love a good soup and was very impressed with the results. The recipe was very easy to follow and the ingredients were very easy to find and prepare.

The rest of the recipes were successful as well. What I really liked was the small stories that Rachael included with each recipe. That gave them just a slight personal touch which made them even better. I wholeheartedly recommend this book, especially to those families who don't have a lot of time on their hands for elaborate meals, and many of these recipes are kid friendly.

I'm looking forward to trying the Guy Food volume next.

4 out of 5 stars Good buy for the wife.......2006-02-25

I purchased this one for the wife and see loved it. She in very much a believer in comfort foods and this book has several dishs that she loves. I do have to say that these dishs are pretty easy to make - Rachael is truly the queen of good quick meals

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Cooking Novices.......2007-05-31

I'm not a great cook, and that's why I love my slow cooker. It doesn't require a great chef to make edible food. But, the only recipes for my slow cooker that I could find involved pouring Campbells Cream Soup over meat, and I was getting sick of it. This cookbook offers a wide variety of simple recipes, and so far they are delicious. I think I'll be ordering the Hildebrand's other cookbooks too!

In a nutshell, bowl food is relaxed eating. Depending on your mood, you can slow simmer a fiery curry, put together a luscious pasta dish, or simply toss a few fresh ingredients in a wok. 4 out of 5 stars Great Recipes for Those with Time on Their Hands.......2006-06-05

I was delighted with Bowl Food from the moment my sister brought it home, with its adorable concept and full-color pictures for every recipe. I immediately flagged multiple recipes to try, and have found several that have become staples for dinner parties (the Sweet Potato Salad is particularly impressive when trying to win over non-vegetarians) and for every-day dinners as well (the asparagus risotto is a tasty recipe and easy for those making their first foray into risottos). There are plenty of vegetarian recipes (I'd say at least 25%) and many others can be converted to vegetarian with a few easy substitutions. However, be aware that the majority of these recipes call for time-consuming prep and exotic ingredients. This book as a whole is not for the everyday home cook with a fulltime job--it's for weekend experimentation. While some recipes can still be explored without all the prep if you have a good local market (for example, if you can buy paneer cheese instead of making it!), many require a search for ingredients you may have never heard of.

If you like adventurous eating and spending hours in the kitchen is sometimes fun for you, you'll like this book. If not, buy it for a friend who adores cooking, and then borrow it to copy down the quick and easy recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Life made easier.......2006-03-16

I work full-time and go to school full-time and this book has been a lifesavor! It provides nutritious meals that are quick and most of them are great as leftovers! I highly recommend this book to any busy person!

3 out of 5 stars Intriguing, but relies on many non-staple ingredients.......2005-03-01

This book was recommended to me by an employee at LA's famous Cook's Library bookstore, a haven for cooks and cookbook lovers. I had been searching for a well-rounded book emphasizing one-dish entrees for midweek cooking. Though the subtitle suggests just that (Comfort Food for People on the Move), many ingredients can't easily be found at supermarkets.

The recipes are divided into soups, salads, pasta, rice, wok dishes, curries and one-pots. For the most part, the recipes are inspired formulas featuring cuisines from many parts of the world, with a decidedly Asian bias.

I've prepared many of the dishes, but on weekends only, since most recipes call for at least one non-staple ingredient. During the week, the thought of having to stop at one or two stores on the way home in search of galangal, kaffir lime leaves, saffron threads, ponzu, brown bean sauce or mirin is a little overwhelming. The above mentioned ingredients and many others called for in this cookbook usually require a bit of searching, something I only have time for on a luxurious Saturday. That said, the recipes are quite good and appeal best to those with somewhat ambitious palates.

One more thing: Bowl Food is small (appx. 7.5" x 5.5") but is nearly 400 pages. The binding is so thick, it's impossible to keep the book open while cooking, which I find annoying.

5 out of 5 stars Best eclectic recipe book.......2004-03-29

This book is fantastic. With pictures for every single recipe, and over 200 dishes, it has become one of my favourites to flip through to decide what to have for dinner.

Recipes are easy to follow, have clear instructions for special ingredients, mostly can be prepared in less than an hour, and most rely on easy-to-obtain ingredients. Greatly appreciated that they wrote tips like to obtain 1.75 lbs pounds prepared squash, you'd need to by 3 lbs at the store. Several ingredients can easily be replaced with similar items.

Excellent variety of asian-inspired and mediteranian dishes. EVERYTHING has turned out really well in this book. I have not yet been disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars All in One Bowl!.......2003-02-22

    BOWL FOOD:
Comfort Food for People on the Move.
Published by Laurel Glen of San Diego

Basic in concept, bowl food has been around for hundred's of years, just now moving into North America. Many primitive people used half coconuts or gourds to hold their food. Although we have evolved to the use of flat plates, knives, spoons and forks, we should no longer think of bowls as necessary only with breakfast cereals, stews, and soups. Bowls are no longer the exclusive domain of Asian cultures.

People have shortened time in their lives these days. When making most bowl foods, complete all your chopping to bite-sized pieces before cooking. Separate into piles which cook in similar lengths of time. Cooking time for most recipes is brief. A lite, balanced meal in just one bowl, nestled into the palm of your hand makes for a cozy time at the computer or TV. Forget knives, formal tables with chairs -- maybe use a pair of chopsticks to keep your expertise alive.

It should be noted Bowl Food is an edited compilation of recipes, a collection from many food professionals. Each turn of almost 400 slick pages reveals a full-color picture of the finished bowl while opposite stands its easily understandable recipe. This is an excellent way to eat a lot of fresh, barely cooked veggies and maximize your nutritional intake.

Bowl Food's Contents include soups, salads, pasta dishes, rice, wok-stir fry, curries also one-pots. Some selections:

§ Spicy Squash and Coconut Soup rather crosses the Asian with the sturdy squash.
§ Pea and Arugula Soup is a lite, quickly-made health meal.
§ Shrimp, Potato and Corn Chowder smacks of New England.
§ Ramen Noodle Soup with Roast Pork and Greens, utilizes left-overs in simple, easy Asian dish.
§ Crab and Spinach Soba Noodle Salad is a delicately flavored salad simply made.
§ Pasta with Seared Shrimp includes red chilies and capers.
§ Madras Beef Curry is simple and transforms skirt steak into a rich dish.
§ Chicken and Mushroom Pilaf blends mushrooms, almonds and yogurt.
§ Shrimp and Snow Pea Stir-Fry is light, tasty and quick to make.
§ Spicy Sausage Stew is but one of the "One Pots" dishes in Bowl Food.
§ Chicken and Asparagus Risotto marries distinct flavors into a well-balanced meal.
§ Tomato Bread Soup reminds us of Italy.
§ Caramelized Onion and Parsnip Soup smacks of root cellars of New England.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely the Best.......2007-01-17

I have had this cookbook for four years and it is still my favorite, I use its recipes at least twice a week. Not only are the recipes easy to follow and prepare, but they taste so great. I find the tips and side notes very helpful. I also like the writing style, because it doesn't assume you are an expert already in the kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Recipe Book.......2005-07-14

This book is absolutely excellent. She has everything from appetizers, to the various meats, various types of cooking from grilling to casseroles and simply yummy desserts. I have 2 of her previous cookbooks and this is a good compilation of the two plus extras. She lays it out well and offers helpful hints in the columns to help convert it to other recipes, etc. It doesn't have pictures of every recipe (maybe the only downfall) but does have many glossy full pages of pics. It's well worth the buy.

    5 out of 5 stars Comfort indeed!.......2005-03-07

I've had this book for about three years, and it is the most popular cookbook in my collection. Every recipe I've tried is delicious and never disappoints. The author has very helpful hints in the margins of each recipe so even a novice cook can't miss.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cookbooks ever!.......2003-12-19

I have bought numerous cookbooks, but by far this is one of the best ones. I constantly go back to this one. "300 Best Comfort Food Recipes" does not have a lot of pictures and I know what people think, I'm one of those people. "What no pictures or no pictures for all recipes?" It doesn't matter. I've tried about 10 recipes from this book so far in the past 2 months and they have been awesome. I should try more but I keep going back to the same ones I have tried already and I cannot get tired of them. My favourite recipes so far are the soup recipes - talk about comfort food (especially creamy potato and leek soup /and French onion soup)!

    Book Description

In Provence, where Anne Gardon grew up, comfort food means hearty dishes, thick, chunky soups and stews and old-fashioned desserts. For most of us, it also means those tastes we crave when we need a little creature comfort, the best-loved dishes of our childhood, the familiar flavors and smells that conjure up warm memories and good times. Gardon is a strong believer that comfort also means not being a slave to the stove while friends are relaxing in the dining room.

In Comfort Food Fast, rather than feature recipes for an unpredictable souffle or a treacherous hollandaise sauce, Gardon includes recipes for one-pot meals which can be served informally at the table, where family and friends can relax and enjoy the comfortable ambience that comes from a simple and tasty meal. Main-course dishes such as Cannelloni With Ricotta and Summer Savory Filling, Pasta Timbale, Roast Chicken With Herb and Cheese Stuffing, Chicken Cacciatore, Pork Tenderloin Stuffed With Apples, Lamb Stew (Moroccan-Style) and desserts like Apple Bread Pudding, Viennese Shortbread, Iced Chocolate Mousse and Chocolate and Raspberry Clafoutis are guaranteed to satisfy our deepest cravings.

Gardon's personal recipe for happiness at the table is what she calls C.H.E.F.s "Cuisine: Cheap, Healthy, Easy and Fun." Her goal here is to teach us how to get the most out of the best ingredients plus how to put some away for a rainy (or snowy) day. She counsels preparing favorite comfort foods in volume and provides advice on portioning and freezing for those times when creating even a simple dinner can pose a challenge. And what could be more comforting at the end of a long, hard day than to know that something delicious and soul-soothing is already prepared, just waiting to be eaten?

Gardon's latest cookbook is illustrated throughout with the author's own sumptuous full-color photographs.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply elegant.......2006-06-10

This is simply the most wonderful and useful cookbook I have ever came across. I have made almost every one of the recipes in it and my family has enjoyed every one of them. The recipes are very simple and only require minimal ingredient which I love because I have two babies and I don't have much time! I feel like I have made a gormet meal every time I use a recipes in this book. I also love how everything is so natural and healthy in this book. I just love it. I wish I would have came across this book years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Most savory burgers I've laid eyes on, and sank teeth into........1998-07-26

If you're looking to spruce up a hum-drum summer picnic at the park, or lake, or where ever it might be, the burger recipes in this book can't lose.

For me, pictures are very important in a cook book, and this one is loaded with hi resolution color photos. It gives you a clear visual understanding of how the burger should look in addition to just the recipe.

I would reccomend this book to any burger connoisseur as a must for the beef eater's recipe library.

4 out of 5 stars Title a bit misleading, but the food is GOOD.......2005-08-25

I've made a few recipes so far, and they have been DELICIOUS. I have to say that the recipes in here are not quite as quick and easy as some other books, but none of them are especially long and difficult, either. I made a delicious chicken dish from start to finish in about 30 minutes, but most recipes will go for 45 minutes or 1 hour. Also, some of the recipes do not seem especially "comfort food"-ish -- e.g., Thai-style chicken and nectarine salad -- but that doesn't mean they're not good! And many of the recipes are comfort food -- corn cakes, pot roast, creamy turkey pie, etc.

At any rate, I think this cookbook offers a number of do-able, delicious-sounding dishes--but if you're looking for real old-fashioned American cooking, and dishes that all take 30 minutes or less, this isn't the book.

2 out of 5 stars Not Quick, Not Easy.......2003-06-01

Although some of the recipes sounded good, they are not the simple, basic foods that the title implies. Way too many recipes call for asparagus!
