Customer Reviews:
eBay for Dummies.......2007-09-29
Excellent book and just what I wanted. It arrived quickly and in great condition.
Ok but incomplete.......2007-08-27
I read the Dummys Guide several months ago. Since then I have read a number of other books and watched the Dont Bid On It eBay video. I also read the Simplified Tips for ebay, Schills and Sharks, and several others. After going through everything I am ready to pass along my opinion. I will mainly compare and contrast the Dummys guide with my top choice.
The information in the Dummys Guide was outdated and incomplete. The information was good but there was a lot of important things that were left out. Pages are filled with cute cartoons instead of details ebay users really need. Lots of filler to make the book longer but when compared to newer books, the actual information was thin. It barely comments on snipe bidding but the like Don't Bid On It book(which is also available here at amazon), has a detailed article on snipe bidding plus a chapter on bidding strategies that explains how it works along with other bidding strategies. The Dummys guide only quickly mentions fraudulent sellers and feedback with little explination of how to check it. Dont Bid has an extensive chapter explaining how feedback really works, how to prevent bad buyers from leaving you negative feedback, how to use feedback to spot hijacked or fake accounts, a full chapter on feedback and how it works, it also has a full section on identifying honest buyers and what to do if you do have a problem with a buyer or seller, and much more than I can list here.
Did you know that any seller who says "I am not responsible for loss or damage if you do not buy insurance" is WRONG, they are legally responsible even if the buyer does not pay for insurance.
Did you know that if you select the wrong option when filing a PayPal complaint, your complaint will be automatically rejected and you will not be able to re-file? That is pretty important to know and both of these were in the Dont Bid book but not in Dummys Guide as well as many similar tips.
The Dont Bid book also has a demonstration video. Many of the pages in the Dummys guide were filled with explinations about what webpage to go to and what to do, it was much easier to see it demonstrated in the Dont Bid video than it was to read the step by step in the dummys guide. Some of the Dummy's Guide information was not useful, for example, they explain how to research a bidder by seeing when they return to re-bid every day, but in the Dont Bid book they explain that you should not be bidding against such an inexperienced bidder in the first place because that only runs up the price unnecessarily. By simply waiting until the last minute or using snipe software you can avoid this bidder running up the price. This was not part of the dummys strategy and as far as I can remember, that was the only strategy they had. The Dont Bid book had several bidding and several more buying strategies.
The Dummys Guide gives you enough information to get started on eBay, but not enough to trade safely or enough to buy/sell and obtain the best prices. The Dummys guide is not expensive so give it a read but dont use eBay before you read the Don't Bid On It series, only then will you really know how to use eBay safely and correctly.
Great beginning book.......2007-06-17
I hadn't done much with eBay before, so there was more explained in this book than what I had imagined eBay had. Very informative and easy to read.

The book was a lifesaver. It was in good condition and came in a timely manner.
eBay Overview.......2007-03-31
Beginners will find many useful tidbits to help them get a sucessful eBay business started. This book is a good starting point.
Useful.......2007-03-10
Some useful information on ebay. Not all ideas work for all items being sold, but gives you ideas.
Very surprised.......2007-02-07
Its a great first and reference book for beginners or if your thinking of selling anything on Ebay.
General Overview for eBay begginers.......2007-01-10
Overall this book was an easy read. The information is marginally useful. I would not say it is the best book on ebay selling, but there are bits of advice that I found useful. What I think lacked attention was the section on getting inventory, there just wasn't enough sources.
However the book does give advice on going legite and all the paper work you need to complete.
It is a good general book for starting, but not the only one you will need to run an eBay business.

Great eBay starter book.......2007-06-14
If you are trying to get started in eBay you gotta get this book.
Good comprehensive starting point for the prospective eBay-er.......2007-03-28
This author is one of the current gurus in the area of making a ton by selling stuff on eBay. I've been registered there for almost a decade myself, buying books and stamps at first, and then selling them. I was never out to amass a fortune, the way Collier and so many others seems to be, but I've made a slow and steady income and I've been happy with that. Since I taught myself how to do all that stuff back when eBay was still a relatively site, I've never felt the need of a how-to book, but a colleague recommended this one so I decided to take a look at it. Not bad, not bad at all. While enthusiastic (because it's required by the publisher of this series), Collier manages not to get carried away too often. For instance, she will suggest good online business practices, then confess that she seldom follows this one or that one herself. I didn't find anything I didn't already know in the "Basics" section (which was kind of a relief), but she has some interesting things to say about researching goods on the Web, whether you're buying or selling, and some subtle points about the way PayPal works which I hadn't really thought about, and so on. The author also has a strong background in marketing and sales and what she has a number of thoughtful things to say regarding the application of that experience to eBay, things that us humanities majors have never had to learn. So, while I won't follow her advice on using QuickBooks, and I don't expect to open an eBay Store, I certainly put a lot of bookmarks in this fat volume for future reference and rereading.
Very informative!.......2007-03-13
Although you will find yourself needing a lot of time to read it, I think this book has all what you need to know about ebay. either to buy or sell. It is very informative and easy to read. I recomend it.
Outstanding Resource.......2007-02-14
If you're on a tight budget, much of what she tells you is actually explained on eBay in the "Site Map", but you can't spend ALL your time online! For example: I wanted to have my own domain outside eBay. Marsha provided a springboard saving me hours of research time. I ended up with one of her suggestions. That tip alone has saved me beaucoup $$. Ideal for beginning to intermediate sellers.
CON: this deals only with eBay. I find selling on Amazon often to be the better choice. Also no mention of Overstock nor Yahoo.

Very Helpful.......2007-01-07
This was a very helpful book, and made me think about the details when creating my listing and taking my pictures. It explains how to take clearer pictures and the important information to put in your listing. Most importantly, it tells you what things you should not do.
not worth the money.......2006-11-27
My wife has an ebay business and bought this for insights. This is cmoon sense, and there are enough free guides available that provide the same information.
We returned the book promptly.
This is the book eBay sellers asked for!.......2006-05-09
I'm the editor who worked with Patti & Marsha on this book. When we attended the eBay Live convention in 2005, we had the chance to ask a lot of eBay sellers what kind of information they needed that they couldn't find. We got the same replies over and over:
* They wanted info on how to take better photos for their sales, especially how to take photos of smaller items like jewelry and coins.
* They wanted to know how to dress up their sales with HTML tweaks.
* They wanted to know how to write better listing copy.
We answered all those questions in this book plus a lot of others. This is the book you need if you want to get a leg up on other sellers and post the best looking listing with the best photos. It's a proven fact that the better your listing and photos looks, the higher your bids will be!

This is a great book, because you can always learn something new to put into practice. It's not just for Dummies!! It can help eBay users of all levels.
eBay Timesaving Techniques for Dummies.......2006-09-22
The author stresses that a degree of understanding Ebay is assumed. So, if you are an Ebay newby, buy another book. Also, its primarily for those who are starting an Ebay business--if you are just selling your old trains or something similiar, buy another book. If you are starting a Ebay business, it has some pretty good suggestions.
One idea alone has saved me thousands!.......2006-04-10

Tries Hard to Cover Everything.......2005-03-01
A significant proportion of this book is dedicated to producing well presented listings. Easy HTML for ebay does a far better job of covering the same ground. There are also alot of quick tips that are easy to apply (and have been better covered in books such as ebay hacks).
Most of the software packages on the CD are trial versions. Nothing innovative or new is included.
The descriptions of the ebay sandbox and API are very superficial - enough to get you started but little else. The chapter on office development tells you that "serious"
experience is required and little information is availible from the ebay development site and advises the reader to concentrate on PHP - not bad advice but it takes 7 pages to get there.
Conclusion: the scope of the book is overambitious. It results in a good description of how to prepare listings, some useful tips and a superficial introduction to the ebay API.

Customer Reviews:
buy it for your dad!.......2004-11-21
I havent read this book myself. I bought it on Amazon and had it shipped to my father so that he would quit calling me to do his Priceline bidding. "You can do it, Dad." "No, I can't. I need a room in Denver Sunday night."
Now he's done his first bid himself without talking to me. He thought the book spoke to him at his level and was easy to understand. He got a $149 room for $60 on his own. The book more than paid for itself with just his first bid!
Demystify Priceline with this book........2004-11-21
This book takes the mystery out of bidding via Priceline. It also lets you know when you should use Priceline and when it would be better to use conventional reservations. The tips this book give regarding the use of several message boards on the Internet is also invaluable. I really enjoyed the information about the "bid grid" when trying to win hotel rooms. Great work Sascha!
Great Book to Save Money.......2004-11-18
Priceline.com is a great website to save on your travels. This book is great to learn how to use the website efficiently and save tons of money. I stayed in the hotels that I thought I could never and had my dream vacations I thought I would not be able to afford.
Very informative!.......2004-11-12
I have been bidding on Priceline for almost a year now, and have gotten some great deals. Our family has been able to afford to travel places we could've only dreamed of before because of Priceline. But I still didn't quite understand how it all worked. So I bought this book, hoping for more insight. It gave me that, and so much more. This book explains how to bid in simple language that anyone can understand. I picked up alot of tips that I was unaware of before, which will help me in future bidding. I plan to buy a copy for friends who have asked "How did your get that $300 a night hotel for $50?!". If you're looking to save money on travel through Priceline, this book is a must-read!
Note from the author.......2004-11-11
Just thought I'd respond to the bad review below. I'm not surprised the reviewer found the book redundant. This isn't a book for people who are already Priceline experts. It's for people who haven't used Priceline much, might be confused by its strange way of doing things, and want to save lots of money on travel. I explain all of Priceline's details and jargon in plain English for non-geeks. "For Dummies" books have a lot of repetition because they're big on hand-holding -- we want to make sure you stay with us every step of the way.
The book is an introduction to saving money with Priceline; if you're already an expert, you may want to buy it for your friends and family so you don't have to bid for them any more!
I personally think the book is great, but you could have predicted that, huh?

Customer Reviews:
I thought I was an expert - what a fun book!.......2003-06-20
This book gave me tons of new ideas about how to shop on ebay. I didn't know that I could buy such interesting items - Pizza? It's written in an easy to read style, and I actually laughed out loud while I was reading it. Some of the stuff I knew, but I really learned a lot about the different areas of ebay that I hadn't visited before. I also found some new ideas on how to get deals. It's a fun book at a great price, I'm giving it as a holiday gift to all my friends who are always asking me about ebay.
Fun Book!.......2003-06-17
This book is different that a lot of the other eBay stuff available. It's more like a value guide. There's a lot of insight into finding cheap prices and bidding to keep prices low in here. I especially like the insight on finding travel bargains and cheap business wear, two of my favorite things to buy on eBay.
Great idea!.......2003-06-14
I've been shopping on eBay (as well as Amazon :-) for years. But my mother and mother-in-law are both novices. They're always bugging me with, "What's this eBay thing? What can I get on there? My friend completed her discontinued china set on eBay.." All with the gist of "How can I do this too." As soon as I saw this book was coming out, I picked up two copies of it (mother in laws are rarely great sharers) and gave it to them. Finally! They get what eBay is all about. They know how to set up their user accounts, how the "store" is laid out, how to uncover the best deals and, most importantly for them, how to stay safe when buying on eBay. Now, they're ready to get off and running. In fact, they picked up so much great information, they even taught me a few things (no more staying up late waiting for an auction to end in order to swoop in with the best bid!) This book is great! It's an easy read, and you can jump around to find the points that are most relevant to you. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to become an eBay power shopper.

Want to get rid of those old comic books gathering dust in the closet? Looking for a deal on Beanie Babies? The world of Internet auctions is a fast-paced and glamorous adventure of buying, selling, and bidding. It is as addictive as it is fun. Writer and small business owner Greg Holden lets you in on the secrets of getting the best deals without losing sleep in Internet Auctions for Dummies.
This zany tour of auction e-commerce begins by addressing the basics of getting hooked up to the Net. The book then splashes right into the waters of auction sites, including searches for items you want to sell or purchase, how to arrange for payment and delivery, and what to expect from everyone involved.
Tips, anecdotes, advice, and new terms like "escrow service" filter into your life via Holden's conversational style that reads as though he is just sitting you down over coffee to give you his perspective on the world. Yet he minces no words--each page is packed with site information and the nitty-gritty details you need to make money from collectible action figures, or vice versa.
The CD-ROM that comes with the book has software to help you get connected, like Internet Explorer, as well as specialty software like Auctioneer 3.0 and other tools to see you on your way. Remember, it's not over 'til it's over, and soon you'll be hearing the virtual auctioneer crying "Going, going, gone!" --Rob Lightner

Enjoyable, Educational and Pretty Dang Entertaining.......2000-05-12
This book is not a dry read! It's pretty engaging. I had never considered the psychology of the auctioner/auctionee - and this guy has captured the online (and live, in-person) auction dynamic and describes it pretty thoroughly (the CD software's nice, too: there are a couple CGI scipts you can use that are documented nicely, along with some .exe's that look fairly easy to cope with). Good insight into the pitfalls that the auction newbie (me) should beware of (what kind of payments to take, make sure service is plenty dang fast, follow up on questions, deal with reputable people, be prompt with payment when buying, etc.) and again, the writer covers not just online auctioning but the live kind. Fascinating. A good read, the kind you can pick up and get something new from each time.
