I got this book for my husband, and he loves it. He is very much into these type of toys. Thank you Amazon!

5 out of 5 stars A Guide to the Beginnings of a New Art Form.......2007-05-11

It wasn't enough to have regular dolls like Barbie or G.I. Joe. Some people had to go messing around with the dolls instead of leaving them as they were. They melted and remolded the limbs, or they substituted a speaker or a model of a radio for a head, or they gave G.I. Joe an orange afro. This was only about ten years ago, and the dolls were coming in from Asia. "It was as if artists were taking toys that I remembered from my childhood and imposing an adult aesthetic on them," writes Paul Budnitz, "They were cute, scary, hip, violent, scarce, expensive, and beautiful." Budnitz, a film-maker with a fine arts degree from Yale, was so taken by the strange dolls that he went to Hong Kong and started a toy company to manufacture more. In _I Am Plastic: The Designer Toy Explosion_ (Abrams), Budnitz has provided three hundred lovely color pages devoted to his obsession, both the designs made by his firm Kidrobot and by many others who are participating in a lively new art form. And if the prices for these items on e-Bay, for instance, is any indicator, there are lots of enthusiasts just as obsessed.

Budnitz asserts that these are true works of art, but that they have an unusual canvas, usually bright, smooth plastic assembled in parts. They come in limited editions, like prints, and many buyers are interested in collecting sets. Because there are so few made, the artists are free to take risks and make something very strange and otherwise commercially infeasible. The artists wind up putting their own money up for production, and spending their own time to sell their sculptures, when of course they'd be happier just being artists. It's a risk, and they want their customers to take a risk on buying, too, and buying just because the offered toy is "really, really weird." Weird they certainly are, and often laugh-out-loud funny; these are generally cartoonish creatures, although some are scary. Often they are beautiful, and the lovely pictures in this book will make anyone want to see the real objects. A set from Devilrobots inexplicably titled "Maffy Kubrick" looks like gumdrops of different colors with smiley faces. Devilrobots also manufactures cubes that come in mock tofu boxes, but the cubes of tofu have faces (usually unsmiling) and are driving around in little bumper cars. Lots look like they would fit into Japanese monster movies, for instance. There are bunnies here, too, mostly in the form of "Smorkin' Labbit", a puffy rabbit figurine whose cuteness clashes with the cigarette in its mouth. The labbit in each of its incarnations is physically identical, except for its paint job, which might be garish, pastel, plaid, or bondage-themed.

There is page after page of whimsical figures, full of color, with molding revealing fine detail. The people who produce these objects obviously love their work. The people who collect them, and pay premium prices, obviously love them, too. I certainly would be more interested in viewing a collection of these pieces than I would a host of items from the Franklin Mint. I didn't know a thing about designer toys before I opened this handsome book, but it is clear that this is a trend that will continue. Perhaps _I Am Plastic_ will be a foundation document for an established art movement in the future, to show the movement's Golden Age, but it stands on its own as a fine introduction into a very odd artistic and commercial endeavor.

5 out of 5 stars great book for toy collectors and enthusiasts.......2007-03-01

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys urban toys. Almost every page has very nice, large photographs of different single works and series. The book displays each toy very well; it includes different views of most of the works and some close-ups. It features artists from all over the world and contains some interviews as well.

Book Description

This fantastic book tells the detailed history of pinball games from the 1930s to the 1990s, including the evolution of all sorts of game features--from flippers and bumpers to sound, scoring, and tilt mechanisms--all immersed in the complex and magnificent artwork characteristic of pinball machines. Pinball manufacturing giants like Gottlieb, Williams, and Bally are well represented, in addition to several lesser-known and foreign manufacturers. With a listing of over 3,000 games built to date, statistics, updated pricing information, and over 900 color photographs (including close-ups, flyers, images of rare prototypes, and games never before seen in print), this is essential for the libraries of all pinball lovers. The pinball machine is here to stay--due in part to the exponential increase in the number of serious collectors and enthusiasts. What other modern amusement machine can boast a longevity of over 60 years, withstanding the test of time and ever-changing technology, while maintaining its instantly recognizable form? The rolling, bouncing silver ball, as unpredictable as the flip of a coin or even life itself, has kept up with cutting-edge advancements in electronics, mechanics, and even computers, to amuse and test the skill of players worldwide!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-01-12

Certainly informative about most pinball machines. My gripe is with a book this big and thick, I should not have been able to find a number of machines not included. Not just any pictures, but no mention what-so-ever. I must say though I was educated much further about pinball machine operations then I was ever aware of prior to looking at this book. Just a little disappointed that some of my favorite machines had no mention. I am a 60's 70's pinball machine lover.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pinball book with high quality pictures.......2006-02-25

You can't go wrong picking this one up. A must for any pinball enthusiast or beginner.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have For A Pinhead.......2005-10-01

This is a wonderful work of Pinball Book Art. I checked out this book from my local library and it is a must have. The book is heavy and very well made. The photos are very detailed as well. The book takes a certain aspect of the game such as scoring and breaks that parts of the game down, while the next chapter may focus on pinball sound. The book has so much information in it about history, features, and rare pinball features. A book of this size is bound to have a few mistakes and this book has a few small mistakes, but those are very minor and this is a very detailed work and there is no way one man can know it all about pinball. If you enjoy the game of pinball, you need to check out this book. It will not show you how to repair or maintain the game, its focus is history about the game and its evolution over time. I hope you enjoy this book and also keep enjoying playing the wonderful game of pinball.

4 out of 5 stars Casi igual que jugar una partida de pinball.......2005-09-07

Muy buen libro sobre pinball. He recordado aquellos pinballs con los que empezé a jugar a principio de los 70.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful captivating coffee table book.......2004-12-30

This book is a vibrant timepiece capturing the colorful history of a unique product of the 20th century. When you think about it, when is the last time you *saw* a pinball machine? This book has captured, in both close-up and distant pictures, the colors, lights, and complexity of how these machines work and function. Family and friends--even those who've never seen a pinball--will pull this book out and start browsing in a mesmorized fashion. My only complaint is that the book is somewhat dated as it's from 1999 and doesn't reference the closing of Williams/Bally's pinball division and the great games recently issued by the sole remaining manufactuer, Stern.

However, it very thoroughly shows the evolution of a silver ball falling through assorted pins on a wooden board to the electronic technology of today with plastic ramps, magnets, and flippers. Just facinating to read and look at. If only it had sounds!

Book Description

The Big Toy Box At Sears is a compilation of the Sears Christmas catalogs from 1951 to 1969, boy's toys only. It is printed on stock very similar to that originally used by Sears and the book is the same size (11"x8.5") as the original catalogs. It is 582 pages long, of which 172 pages are in color. It pictures trains, playsets, toy guns, trucks and countless other boy toys from the Baby Boom Era.

An excellent resource and fun to look at. (All products pictured in The Big Toy Box At Sears are no longer available.)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Big Toy Box at Sears (1951-1969).......2007-01-04

This book provides the reader with interesting information on the particular subject, namely toys at Sears. It covers, as per the title, from the period 1951-1969, providing an excellent visual display of the annual catalogues, including the toys & trains sold. It brings back memories of years / Christmas's gone by & trips to Sears department store (in my case Gamages in London England) to see the annual Christmas display. I give it a top 5 star rating as it appeals to the writer's values, nothing less. An excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars The stuff that dreams were made of..........2006-03-18

In the brief introduction to this book the editor states, "If there ever was a "Golden Age" of Western Civilization this was surely it. In the following pages one can see both the reflection of yesterday and the seeds of the future, for few things in our culture are able to capture the sense of the times as are the trivial artifacts we give to our children to play with." Well, these were the playthings that the richest nation in human history gave to its children in the Golden Age between 1951 and 1969. The entire world offered their finest toys to America- but none were finer than those made by our own manufacturers (Marx, Ideal, Mattel, Remco, Kenner, Lionel, Gilbert...)

This edited sellection is mostly of boy's toys from the "wishbooks." You will find Marx playsets and electric trains especially well covered. But there is so much more: Mr. Machine, Robot Commando, Big Caesar Galley, Barracuda Sub, Lost in Space Switch-N-Go, Barracuda Sub, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea playsets, Batman playsets, Hamilton's Invaders, Mattel Shootin' Shell, G.I. Joe, etc., etc., etc. Your only complaint will be that 583 pages aren't enough.

Not all the pages are in color, but I don't remember that all the original catalog pages were in color either. Covers are also reproduced in color for all 19 years.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful But a Bit Pricey.......2004-11-17

The Big Toy Box at Sears is a compilation from the awesome Sears Wishbook catalogs of the 1950's and 60's covering boys toys. It is one heckuva a trip down memory lane with cap guns, foto-electric football, GI Joe, slot cars and more.

You'll be instantly transported back in time if you're a guy. I can remember the catalog arriving at home in September and immediately making out my christmas list.

My only two complaints is that they had gone into the 1970's to see more great GI JOE stuff along with Hot Wheels and the first wave of Star Wars toys.

Secondly at close to $50 bucks it's a bit steep although it is over 500 pages.

Anyone interested in Lionel Toy Trains would find this book very interesting. Listings presented with many pictures and a excellent description. There are many pictures showing the original boxes the train sets were in and giving various dates on production. This book is not just numbers and prices. A very good source of information for the collector and train buff.

I found my old HO gauge train set in the attic and wanted to learn more about it. Reading the info about this book you would think it covered all Lionel train sets. The truth is there is info about all sizes except HO. If HO is your interest look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the Lionel Collector!.......2007-09-14

Excellent book, well written for even the most experienced Lionel Collector. I've put together a nice collection of books on Lionel Electric Trains over the years, and this nice work fits right and....and fills a void or two in the other works.

You will enjoy looking through it, and find answers to your questions.

4 out of 5 stars Lionel Train Sets 1945-1969.......2007-08-06

I think the book is real good, a little confusing but with time should be a great guide.

5 out of 5 stars Doyle Does it Again.......2007-06-10

It's a shame that Greenberg (kalmbach) decided not to update any of their books in a while, because they are top notch. This created a vacuum for those of us in the train collecting hobby that want the most current information. This book is wonderful. There are pictures of almost every set talked about, the language and writing style are great, and it is thorough. I hope Mr. Doyle writes a book on uncataloged sets too, as a recent book on that topic hasn't been written in over 10 years. The price of this book is unbeatable. Try finding it cheaper than on Amazon...and it shipped FREE.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource book.......2002-10-17

I collect toys. A friend gave me this book as a gift. It is an excellent resource for anyone starting to collect toys or someone that has been doing it for a long time. I applaud the authors for making this available. The history of the company was also quite good.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you want to know about Fisher-Price toys.......2002-10-08

If you are at all interested in collecting Fisher-Price toys or simply want some interesting background about the toys you grew up with -- then you'll like this book.

It is by far the most thorough book I've found related to Fisher-Price. It has a complete company history, product catalog and price guide for all the toys made by Fisher-Price (and even some never released).

I am a novice toy collector and bought this book because I've always loved my FP toys. I found every toy I've ever had (or at least can remember) in the book along with some amazing facts about them. Unfortunately, I learned that my Jalopy prized #724 Jolly Jalopy is probably not worth more than...

The authors were obsessive in their attention to detail, pointing out all the nuances that make certain products more valuable than others and providing a detailed history of the company and how some of their favorite toys were born.

My only disappointment was that the book is not available in hard cover.

Have fun!

I enjoyed this book because of the great photos and details. As a toy lover and collector, I can appreciate the authors' memories of collecting and the interesting facts about Fisher-Price. It's a great portable reference to take with you to garage sales or flea markets! The colorful pages and concise information make the world of Fisher-Price toys come alive. It's been a wonderful edition to my library.

5 out of 5 stars Designing he Doll by Susanna Oroyan.......2007-07-04

I own all of Susanna's books and think they are excellent. I would suggest that anyone interested in doll making invest in them, and this is a good one to start with. I honestly think this is 5 star all the way. I use this, and her other books, frequently while working. I am a serious cloth doll maker and usually buy every doll book when it comes out - some I resell immediately, but this one I am keeping!

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, thorough, downright addictive!.......2007-05-18

The pictures in this book are incredible! The multitude of eclectic styles inspire, and while this is not exactly a how-to, it gets you thinking about the possibilities. In the book, Oroyan focuses more on the different options an artist has: planning ideas (and ways to do this), materials, questions to ask when thinking of the concept, elements of design (e.g. form, scale, color, etc), and she includes some sample sketches that illustrate these ideas, showing some do's and don'ts along the way.

While I have never made a doll, this book has been useful on a few levels. The discussions on scale, caricature (again, with do's and don'ts and how to achieve different goals there), creating abstractions of the form, trying different styles, working with faces and hands, gestures, clothing patterns for the dolls, different materials, anatomy...this book has so much to offer! The images alone earn Designing the Doll 5 stars--everything else is icing on the cake!

5 out of 5 stars Would give it a 10.......2006-10-17

For any of you who believe that dolls are just children's toys or cutesy collector's items, you have obviously not seen this book. Oroyan's Designing the Doll: from Concept to Construction, is a very impressive book. While it is as advertised, a book on making dolls, it is first and foremost an art book. Throughout the book, the author is addressing the student as artist. She covers issues such as color, texture, drawing, abstract and impressionism, scale, etc. The details of construction are included as are some patterns, but the greatest value of the book is actually in the illustrations of finished dolls, some by the author and some by others. These are exceptional works of art. Some are actual portrait works, capturing in miniature the personalities of those portrayed. Others, while they may have had human models, are designed to capture an essence or spirit, an impression or meaningful event. When one sees dolls such as these, one understands instantly why a person would collect them: they are Michelangelos in miniature.

3 out of 5 stars Quite a nice book.......2007-06-13

The book certainly has nice and inspiring pictures of great automata. To a certain extent, some of the concepts of automata are defined. But largely, the chapters are devoted to eccentric and creative automata artists who inspire more by examples than theories.

5 out of 5 stars Clear directions and eye candy too........2006-11-08

This is the best book on automata since Flying Pig opened it's doors. Peppe shows how to build your own test board of mechanical movement and provides examples of the best current automata for inspiration. The "test board" is finely crafted, covers a wide range of movements and it's fun to play with too.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Buy for Beginning Builders.......2004-11-25

Depending on what your interests are, this can be a valuable addition to your library. It is not for collectors, in my opinion, and most of the examples are on the "folk art" side: crude, kitschy, and sometimes even made of junk. There are profiles of a few builders who make complex automata demonstrating fine craftsmanship, such as the wonderful Keith Newstead and John Grayson. I would have preferred to have some detailed explanations of how some of their automata work, though. The REAL strength of this book is if you are beginning to make your own automata and would like to have a "kit" to experiment with. The book contains full sized plans for an experimenter's "kit" which is really nice. I have Robert Addam's "How to Design and Make Automata" and CMT's book, but they both only have crude drawings with no dimensions. I made photocopies of the parts and then used Xylene to transfer directly onto plywood and cut the parts out on a scroll saw, saving a great deal of time and giving me a nice litte platform for experimenting. This alone makes the book a must have for the beginning builder.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book! Great color pictures and diagrams.......2003-06-10

This has got to be one of the best books on the subject of automata and mechanical theatre. There are lots of great color pictures and diagrams to build your own automata. Worth the money!

4 out of 5 stars A Must for Automata Enthusiasts!.......2003-06-09

This book is everything you could ask for in book on contemporary artistic automata.

Each chapter has a brief summary of the topic in question -- say tools and materials. Next, each chapter moves on to showcase the work of two or three automata artists with many pictures and a page or two of information about each artist.

The photographs of automata in this book are outstanding. You can really get a sense for the devices, their construction, and most especially, their finishes.

If you love automata, want to see more of them, and want to learn about some of the top automata artists in the contemporary scene, this book is a must-have.

Book Description

Here again is the fascinating world of marbles, newly revised. Indians, Aggies, Steelies, and more...every major category of marble is presented in this new and exciting guide. Included are old handmade marbles of glass, earthenware, minerals, and steel; machine-made marbles and their manufacturers; and contemporary handmade glass marbles by artisans recapturing the old styles and creating exciting new styles all their own. Marble pricing is explained in detail. The author describes the four factors to look for when determining the value of a marble, and presents an accurate guide to today's market.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Marble Book!.......2000-08-03

Easier to use than some of the other marble "standards." It is well organized and the values, based on the condition of the marble, are with the marbles. Some of the other books have you constantly flipping from back to front to find a value. The different types of antique handmade marbles are logically grouped for the most part and the machine made marbles are divided by manufacturer. There is even a section with examples from contemporary marble artists. My one complaint would be that there should be an index to make finding of the great many types of machine made marbles easier. Until something better comes along, I carry this with me to auctions, flea markets, antique shows or anywhere else I think there might be an opportunity to buy, sell or trade marbles.

Book Description

Thanks to Antiques Roadshow, the highest rated, long running prime-time series on PBS®, with millions of viewers a week, we are a nation seeking fortune in our attics. And thanks to Antiques Roadshow Primer, with 572,000 copies in print, we are highly antiques-literate. But there's another audience out there, too, showing up ever more frequently on Antiques Roadshow--those obsessive, bitten-by-the-bug collectors. Bring on the Maltese Falcon posters!

Celebrating the collectible--that 20th-century object that brings with it less monetary value than passion, nostalgia, quirky appeal, and just plain pleasure--Antiques Roadshow Collectibles focuses on 12 major areas that inspire both the thrill of the chase and the thrill of discovery: furniture, photographs, posters and illustration art, costume jewelry and wristwatches, dolls, toys, advertising memorabilia, sports, glass and pottery, and more. A guide to value rather than price, it is packed with a wealth of information that will help turn any interested flea market fiend into a first-class collector. From the innovative design of Bertoia chairs to the high-quality crafting of costume jewely to the surprising variety of PEZ dispensers, here are 416 pages brimming with information. Bound into the book is a 32-page full-color section, while hundreds of black-and-white photographs illustrate every chapter. There are Antiques Roadshow discoveries, tips from experts and appraisers, the steps to becoming a focused collector--even how to use pieces without compromising their value. After all, isn't it more fun to eat off the Fiestaware?

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read ~ Great for collectors.......2007-03-15

If you are into collecting this is the book for you. It has lots of interesting facts and discussions about why people collect things and how to get started if you're thinking about a collection.

It doesn't talk about EVERYTHING though, so if you are really into a specific collectible you would be better off with a book that addresses that collectible.

2 out of 5 stars Not much help for a serious collector or dealer.......2005-10-30

The scope of the book is too broad and the depth of the topics considered is too shallow. Complex collectibles such as costume jewelry or art glass are given a few pages of attention, but the book tries to cover too many areas at the expense of giving adequate attention to any area. If you want a very, very basic overview, history, and details about popular collectibles, you may find this book of some use. However, your money would probably be more wisely spent on books that deal with your specific topics of interest. It's fun reading, but definitely not a "complete guide to collecting...".

5 out of 5 stars Antiques Roadshow Collectibles by Prisant.......2004-01-03

This work covers practically every important aspect of
antique collection and evaluation. For instance, the authors
point toward important evaluative criteria for antiques
including overall appearance, condition, finish, color,
functionality, attribution, history of ownership and many
other important aspects which indicate value. In addition,
the author quantifies value in terms of sentiment,
historical significance, aesthetic value, intrinsic value,
celebrity status value and market value. The author
provides examples of collectible items; such as,
- Advertising (cigar bands, liquor bottles, ale, bottle caps...)
- Sports (signed baseballs, autographs, bats, gloves, cards...)
- Toys (Tonka, cast iron, trains, boats, robots i.e. Mr.Machine)
- Dolls (mix of saw dust and glue and composite dolls
- Watches (movement, jewels, incabloc shields, caliber,
hands, crystal and grades from factory new to average
- Movie memorabilia
This book is excellent for a potential collector getting into
the antiques business for the first time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book!.......2004-01-27

At first, I only wanted to see the new figures. But then I looked at the 60s figures and wanted the 40th Anniversary sets. I agree, the "prototypes" were fake but the book was still good. It is the only book I read. A great edition to your collection. Buy and Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Fun photos, some fakes.......2002-10-11

This book for some reason includes re-creations of proto-types. How do you recreate a prototype? Sounds like a dumb idea to me. ...I don't know, but I liked the book mostly because of the interesting photos of GI Joes, and the information that it added to what I already know. The parts of the book (like the value guide) which I thought were garbage I just skipped over. There are lots of entertaining photos in the book, and interesting information too. Is it some kind of Collector's Bible for GI Joe? No, I don't think so.

2 out of 5 stars Be Very, Very Careful!.......2002-08-28

While Santelmo's book is valuable for all the interviews with early GI Joe creators, collectors who have not had experience handling rare items can be easily misled by the many photos of so-called "prototypes" which were "re-created" for the book. Because the "re-creations" are not clearly marked there is significant concern that when these surface in collecting circles they will be thought authentic because of their association with the book. The price guide is also virtually useless as it undervalues some very rare pieces and wildly overvalues some more common ones. Buyer Beware!

5 out of 5 stars Joemazing.......2002-03-23

This book rocks! I can't say enough good things about it. Very well put together and great pics. It makes me want to get my joes out of the attic.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Good Standard Reference Guide.......2001-12-22

While some hardcore collectors and professional critics have found some small points to pick at in this book, most reasonable collectors will find it to be just what it purports to be: A very good standard reference guide to one of our all time favorite toys G.I. Joe. So find a comfortable chair, turn off the TV, flip open the book and get reacquainted with a old childhood friend G.I. Joe.
