5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2003-11-02

This book has shown me that average everyday people and people with amazing abilities can live their dreams. This is something i wish to achieve within myself. By reading this book and hearing how their passion bursting out within, I see the possiblities of a different life unfolding. Cheri Lutton lives what she preaches, thus making the book genuine and true.
I encourage anyone who fear living their dreams to read this book. You will find that living your truth is not so scary after all, and that many people around are doing jumping off that cliff with joy and inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Mirrors of Love in Acts of Courage.......2003-10-18

WOW! I had such an incredable experience reading this book! There are times when I am feeling a little down or I am in some need of inspiration, and re-reading some of this book helps me to get back what I am lacking at times...courage and inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Feel the Enthusiasm.......2003-03-01

You cannot help but feel Cheri's constant enthusiasm. She seemlessly weaves together countless inspirational stories from all walks of life. Cheri has demonstrated a true gift to touch each and every one of her readers in a variety of ways by sharing with us the lives of relatively few.

5 out of 5 stars Honoring people! What a concept!.......2003-02-08

For anyone that feels they are not as blessed as others then this book will change their mind. We are all courageous in our own way and Cheri helps us understand this by writing about famous people alongside unfamous people. Placing them side by side and admiring all of them for their perserverance, faith and courage. We tend to honor heroes for great big things like scoring the winning touchdown or winning the presidency, but we can also honor the single mother who struggles to feed her family or the person who pursues a dream through tough adversity. Put down that negative newspaper and pick up this book! It will help spread some goodness in this current climate of fear we have in the world today.

5 out of 5 stars Should be Required Reading!.......2003-01-30

This book should be required reading for everyone! I loved the book so much I just ordered a copy for my mother. There are not enough words to properly explain the way this book leaves you feeling!!

Book Description

The time is 1943, a time of war. The place is the hill-perched town of Nemi, in the Alban Hills south of Rome, overlooking the crater lake where, 2000 years before, the Roman emperor Caligula sailed his gigantic ships to the Temple of Diana. Just a few years before the war, the ancient ships, sunk after Caligula's death, were miraculously recovered from the lake and placed in a lakeside museum. Paolo, the museum curator, now struggles to protect these treasures from Allied bombs and the depredations of the Germans in a world where the struggle for simple survival makes such efforts seem irrelevant. He watches with disquiet as the German occupation brings together Rosanna, his daughter, whose innocence is brutalized by the horrors of the war, and Klaus, a German officer, whose high ideals and love for Rosanna cause him soul-wrenching conflicts of loyalty. Love? Or duty?

The Mirror of Diana tells the poignant story of Klaus and Rosanna's secret love against the backdrop of war-torn Italy and one of the war's great unsolved mysteries: why were the fabulous ships of Caligula reduced to ashes in the midst of war? The answer may have been foretold in the legend sculpted on The Mirror of Diana.

5 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction that Soars.......2005-08-09

Here, embedded in a well-researched historical mystery, is a story of love and war that really soars.

Among the tragic casualties of World War II were two 2000-year-old ships lavishly built for the emperor Caligula, sunk in Lake Nemi, then raised during Mussolini's prewar reign. The irony of the ships' surviving for two millennia immersed in the lake, only to suffer complete destruction just a few years after they had been raised up, is a fascinating but little-known bit of history woven into this enthralling tale of love between a German officer and an Italian woman in wartime Italy.

Klaus Schmidt, a historian before the war and now a German officer who detests the Nazis, rescues Rosanna Giraldi from rape by German soldiers. Rosanna's father, Paolo, the curator of the museum housing the recently-raised ships, finds he shares a love of antiquities with the German officer and, learning that Klaus has rescued his daughter, forges an uneasy friendship with him, even as he watches with concern as Rosanna and Klaus fall in love. But with Italy in the midst of abandoning its alliance with the Reich, with Mussolini falling from power, with the villagers and Paolo's own wife loathing the Germans, and with Klaus falling afoul of his Nazi commander, Klaus's friendship with Paolo and his love for Rosanna bring down on all their heads a violence that rivals the legendary horrors of Caligula.

This eloquently-written novel is both a poignant love story and a pulse-pounding war tale that transports us to an evocatively-depicted wartime Italy. Even the secondary characters are vibrantly alive: Gianni, the street-smart urchin; Gunther, Klaus's can-do sidekick, and Maria, Rosanna's tough but tender mother. And Dressler, the Nazi commander whose party loyalty and sadistic tendencies are indistinguishable, is horrifying.

The plot that carries these characters is breathtakingly original, full of surprising twists, and with a denouement that will pluck at your heart. I enthusiastically recommend this novel.

5 out of 5 stars Stirring Evocative Story.......2004-08-27

This is a magnificent tale told in stunning passion, and I agree with the reviewers who believe this could be turned into a beautiful movie. Set against a backdrop of Roman History in World War II, the ships of Caligula and the myths of Diana as well as the haunting characters take center stage, grab your heart and never let go. And the end of the story is handled with a masterful touch of literary suspense, even up to the last line. A.R. Homer is an author whose star is rising and I dearly look forward to his next book.

Other reviewers have explained about the book so eloquently that I cannot add more to their descriptions except to say that I too loved this book and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW.......2004-08-19

TO ALL THE TREASURE LOST IN WAR reads the dedication of The Mirror of Diana, a novel that has as its centerpiece a major, yet little-remembered, archaeological disaster of World War II: the mysterious burning of the monumental ships of the Emperor Caligula as the German army retreated from Rome. But I found in this book much more than fascinating archaeological background. I discovered a novel as touching as it is exciting.

Klaus Schmidt, a crack artillery officer but also a lover of antiquities, visits the ancient ships of Caligula, housed in a museum south of Rome. Paolo, the ship museum's curator, overcomes his dread of his German visitor and discovers a kindred spirit in Klaus, who is bewitched by the ships. The two develop a warm friendship, although Paolo's dread returns as his daughter, Rosanna, and Klaus are inexorably drawn to each other. Klaus and Rosanna's deepening love leads to complications that worsen exponentially as the pages fly by.

Writing in clean and elegant prose, A.R. Homer evokes a vivid image of wartime Italy and draws the reader into the thoughts and feelings of the characters, breathing life into them all. The idealistic Klaus often vacillates and broods while Rosanna, although brave and determined, displays the immaturity of youth. There are also Paolo, with his head-in-the-clouds obsession for the safety of the ships, Maria, his unsentimental and survival-focused wife, Gianni, the street-smart and ever-hungry urchin, wise beyond his years, and Gunther, Klaus's savvy sergeant, who longs to be back on the farm in Bavaria. But Dressler, the SS commander with whom Klaus locks horns, made my stomach lurch every time he appeared on the scene.

This fascinating and well-researched book will appeal to a wide audience. In addition to those interested in World War II and ancient history and legends, The Mirror of Diana is a novel for all who love pulsating historical fiction. The breathtaking plot twists and the relentless suspense will hold the reader in thrall, and the poignant story of the star-crossed lovers will touch the heart of everyone. I give The Mirror of Diana my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars The Mirror of Diana.......2004-08-18

What a wonderful story -- I fell in love with Klaus and Paolo and Rosanna from the minute I "met" them. The story kept me mesmerized and I couldn't wait to begin reading again every evening, which is the highest compliment I could ever pay an author. The compelling prose causes the reader to become involved and care deeply about the characters. The story line is magnificant -- especially the way mythology is weaved into the plot -- along with the drama of the main characters, we are swept up into the world of gods and goddesses. As I reached the end, I reluctantly closed the book, and found myself longing for more!! I eagerly await Tony Homer's next novel!! Much congratulations to Tony Homer for his spectacular first novel.

5 out of 5 stars An intriguing, well-constructed novel.......2004-07-19

I'll skip the plot synopsis of `The Mirror of Diana', as it has already been covered by other reviewers. But I just finished this book and found the plot of this novel refreshingly straightforward. Not that it's lacking in suspense - there's a lot of surprise in this book; in fact, most of the novel's chapters end with a cliffhanger that makes you keep breaking your resolution to "read only one more chapter before going to bed." The difference is that `The Mirror of Diana' has no gerrymandered plot configurations used by some authors who didn't quite know where they were headed but who felt the need to add some pizzazz, but leave loose ends dangling at the end of the book - you know, the ones that always leave you with a sort of literary indigestion.

But this book is a feast - a fascinating and beautiful tale told with the eloquent simplicity of a competent and confident author. I enjoyed this book immensely. You should read it.

Book Description

The fascinating tale of one of the most remarkable inventions in human history and its effects on science, myth, religion, manners, and the arts.

Of all human inventions, the mirror is perhaps the one most closely connected to our own consciousness. As our first technology for contemplation of the self, the mirror is arguably as important an invention as the wheel. Mirror Mirror is the fascinating story of the mirror's invention, refinement, and use in an astonishing range of human activities--from the fantastic mirrored rooms that wealthy Romans created for their orgies to the mirror's key role in the use and understanding of light.

Pendergrast spins tales of the 2,500-year mystery of whether Archimedes and his "burning mirror" really set faraway Roman ships on fire; the medieval Venetian glassmakers, who perfected the technique of making large, flat mirrors from clear glass and for whom any attempt to leave their cloistered island was punishable by death; Isaac Newton, whose experiments with sunlight on mirrors once left him blinded for three days; the artist David Hockney, who holds controversial ideas about Renaissance artists and their use of optical devices; and George Ellery Hale, the manic-depressive astronomer and telescope enthusiast who inspired (and gave his name to) the twentieth century's largest ground-based telescope. Like mirrors themselves, Mirror Mirror is a book of endless wonder and fascination.

5 out of 5 stars Just Pendergrast.......2004-07-28

As he did with his history of coffee, Pendergrast once again grasps the influence of one item in human history and, thus, modern society. His grasp of the scientific phenomennon involvig mirrors, and the importance of the study of light in modern science, the relativisti theory, etc. makes this book a more than complete insight into human history, "Through the Looking Glass".

I value Pendergrast's books for the perspective they provide to history, and the way he manages to make the whole subject entertaining. This book is not only educative in history and science, but also an easy read.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating book.......2003-11-20

Mark Pendergrast has a talent for writing about a complex subject and making it both understandable and entertaining. Having read his most recent book, Mirror Mirror, I am impressed with the author's versatility and research capability. In writing about the mirror, Pendergrast has explored its history and use in religion, magic, science, art, space exploration, as well as an item of vanity and self indulgence. He has presented his findings in a way that is both enjoyable and educational. The people written about range from early scientists such as Archimedes and Galileo to the modern researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

The New York Times Book Review, which led me to purchase Mirror Mirror, states that it is the equivalent of a liberal arts education. I'm inclined to agree with that assessment. Give Mirror Mirror a 5-star rating.

5 out of 5 stars Reflections on Mirror Mirror.......2003-11-18

Mirror, Mirror is a fascinating read not only for those lovers of the technical but also for those more interested in human history--as I am. Pendergrast explains scientific and technical concepts clearly. What I particularly loved about the book--besides learning a great deal about the history of science--was the way he wove in the human story. Pendergrast makes names like Herschel and Newton come alive as real people with distinct personalities. Reading a book of such quality and scope is my favorite way of learning about history and science.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Reflection on a Fascinating Subject.......2003-11-18

As an artist and a psychotherapist-in-training, this book appealed to me on many levels. It's a well-researched investigation of the history of mirroring and mirror-making, the mystical and the everyday practical use of mirrors, the psychological dimensions, etc. The story of the importance of mirrors in the history of the telescope, and mankind's resultant ability to investigate the cosmos is comprehensively presented. Dense and technical in places, but fun and insightful in others. Worth the read just to get to the last chapter titled, "Final Reflections: Illusions and Realities".

5 out of 5 stars A nice addition to a sparse literature!!!.......2003-11-17

As a person somewhat 'expert' in mirror research (see Keenan et al., The Face in the Mirror: The Search for the Origins of Consciousness), I am always on the lookout for solid research on the topic of mirrors. Mark Pendergrast has put together a great book on the topic. This is the most comprehensive title that one can buy if interested in the history of mirrors.

His reserach is pretty amazing. Even though I have researched the topic for years, I still learned a tremendous amount reading this book. It is noted that Mark Pendergrast makes the reading entertaining. A nice surprise.

Thumbs up all the way...

5 out of 5 stars A definate read!.......2007-05-29

This is an autobiography of a very strong young woman learning the lessons of life and love. Cindy goes through many trials and tribulations in her life. The loss of her mother makes her family drift apart but it is Cindy and John who ultimately bring them back together. She finally finds her true love only to have been seperated by the war. When Jimmy comes home things are just not the same and both eventually move on in their lives. Cindy marries the man she does not really love and has a baby boy. The marriage is always on the rocks and ends in divorce. Cindy has loved and lost and has found many friends along the way in her life. This autobiography is very well written the author pours her heart and soul into her story. You feel as though you are living life along with her. I laughed as well as cried along with Cindy in this story, it truly is heart felt and is a must read for anyone feeling lonely in thier life.

4 out of 5 stars Not your typical autobiography.......2007-04-30

Rear View Mirror is an autobiography by Cindy Callinsky and is a moving and great inspirational account of her life. The story is told in the first person and the author has a way of drawing you into the accounts of her life. The story tells one of love lost, the loss of her mother, and of heartbreak. You will travel cross country and abroad with Cindy. She describes the story contained within the pages as her perception and her reality. In the very beginning she states the following: "This is based on a true story; however, "my" perception is "my" reality. How I have portrayed my story is how I perceived it after having absorbed things with my senses and then processed them through my way of thinking. Other parties involved may have perceived things differently due to a different thought process".

I will have to commend and applaud Cindy on not only her ability to tell her story but in being able to share her life experiences and emotional roller coaster type life. Of course we all experience a roller coaster type life full of ups and downs, loss of love, loss of family and friends, but Cindy has chose to share hers with us. I found myself teary eyed in one moment and smiling the next. Thank you Cindy for sharing your story with me it was a pleasure to read and provide a review.

The book contains some off colored language that may not be suitable for all readers.

5 out of 5 stars It will draw you in.......2007-04-22

I was a skeptic when I started reading this book written by Cindy Callinsky, a Tacoma native, in her first novel,an autobiography of her entrance into young adulthood.
Cindy is someone with whom you can instantly relate. You are happy and hopeful when she finds her true love. Your heart sinks when things don't pan out the way it should. You travel across the country and abroad as she follows her military husband and the new friends she meets.
Many references to the Northwest Rock and Roll music, and the area club scene. Many characters who will find a place in your heart.
This is definitely a great summer beach read. I would recommend that you buy and read this book and tell your friends about it too!

5 out of 5 stars Rear View Mirror - Love lost at such a cost........2007-04-05

Rear View Mirror is a true vision of lives left behind, a true love lost and of haunting memories. It reads like you are the one telling the story. You become the story teller and become the emotions that are so honestly laid before us. Cindy Callinsky does not hide behind veils or regrets and she lets her true soul shine throughout the book. Do not make the mistake of thinking that Rear View Mirror is "chick lit". Every page shows honesty and emotions that any soul can understand and appreciate.

2 out of 5 stars Bland.......2006-12-07

All of the "glowing" reviews I have read for this book have been written either here or on other web pages by folks directly involved with the book or are close friends of the author. I've read enough of it on the author's MySpace page for the book to know that it is bland and rather uninspired. I'm no connoisseur of "chick lit" books, but I am an avid reader and raconteur, and this is nothing exceptional. Don't waste your money.

Book Description

The illusion of the perfect marriage is always just out of reach. Now there's help to escape this addiction to romance and turn women to God's vision for their lives. A subtle conflicting message has been ingrained in American women that their primary goal in life is to find the Prince who will whisk them off to a Magic Kingdom and save them from the drudgery of an ordinary life. The Prince will make them feel beautiful and loved, and will meet all their emotional needs, if he truly loves them. When unmet, these unrealistic expectations lead to a constant craving for "something more." Unable to make their wives happy, husbands often react by emotionally distancing themsevles. Lonely and disillusioned, wives turn to romance novels, movies, food and shopping to fill the emptiness. Those comforts turn into addictions, and that is when women become trapped. Only by finding the "Christ within" and developing a strong sense of their own value and God's vision for their life, can women rise to their potential and overcome narcissism, emotional neediness and the addiction to romance. This comes by focusing on God instead to their husbands to meet their needs and by retraining their thinking about romance. Only then can they have the courage to become the kind of women they admire who are not dependent on romance and constant attention from husbands in order to feel good about themselves or to be happy.

5 out of 5 stars Trapped in the Magic Mirror - Shattering Illusions.......2006-09-21

I found this book to be very helpful both for myself and my clients (mostly women) in getting a grasp on the reality that we are not going to be living the fairy tale life and having a knight in shining armor rescue us is not essential to happiness. Women have been sold a bill of goods that we shoulda, otta, hafta, gotta, musta have a man or our lives are shattered. Well, This book shatters that myth and gives us helpful insight into living a full life as women; not as a princess in a fantasy world. This book is very grounded and practical. An excellent read that captures your attention and leaves you satisfied. This is not fluff - it makes us take a real look at the fairy tales we have allowed to direct our thinking as women. This should be on a top seller list.

5 out of 5 stars A truely original fairy tale... in the old style of the Brothers Grimm..........2007-01-12

Do you remember the magic mirror in the fairy tale, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"? Where you ever curious about where the magic mirror came from, or who was in it? Well, in this truely original fairy tale, you find out how a young witch named Mira was put into the magic mirror, and how she has been trapped there for over a hundred years. This story begins around the time of Snow White, but most of the story takes place a hundred years later, when Mira tries to find a way to escape the mirror and return to human form. This story is not a sanitized "Disney" version of a fairy tale, but a true "dark" adventure like the original fairy tales written by Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm. This fairy tale is not for the very young, or faint of heart ... but for those who yearn for unique adventure about a girl who was never shown love in her human life, but learns how to love and be loved while imprisoned in a magic mirror. The recommended age for this book is for grades 7-9, but I really wouldn't recommend this book to anyone under the age of 14, unless they where emotionally mature, because of the "dark" overtone of the story. This story is truely a "work of art" for all fans of the classic fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm.

3 out of 5 stars Fresh and unique idea, but not much else..........2006-06-11

I wasn't that into this book. The first page or so really grabbed me--I really like the way the author began it: "The bargain was quickly made between my mother and the witch..." But that was the peak of my interest. I am an obsessive fan of fantasy fiction and fairy tales, and the reason why I read this book was because the story topic intrigued me. I have never read or even heard of another book that is written from the point of view of a magic mirror, specifically the one that belonged to Snow White's stepmother. But half way through the book, I was no longer anxious to turn the pages. And I found that the end did not move me very much--or surprise me--but don't get me wrong, it had a good message about love between sisters. Perhaps the reason I was disappointed was that I was expecting a young adult novel (that's the section in which I found it in the library). I think Harrison's writing style is simple and juvenile--good for younger kids (I am 18). And a lot of the ideas in it have been done before, over and over, like the idea of swapping appearances, being victim to an arranged marriage, etc, and was there a hint of Beauty and the Beast in there too, or was that just me? Anyway, this was a rather less satisfying read for me; I probably would have enjoyed it more five years ago. I really do think it would be great for preteens and younger teens. A creative idea for a novel.

4 out of 5 stars Magic Mirror with a twist.......2006-03-11

This is the story of the Wicked Queen's magic mirror, from the story of Snow White-from the point of view of the mirror. A young girl, unattractive, unwanted by her father, stepmother, and half-siblings, she's apprenticed to the local witch, and becomes completely enchanted by the witch's other apprentice, and will do anything for her-anything at all.

The other, more talented and more ruthless, apprentice is, of course, the future Wicked Queen, and she enchants Mira into a mirror and gives her just enough magic to be useful in making and keeping her Queen, but not enough ever to escape the trap of the mirror. But Snow White is just one adventure in the long life of the mirror, who has a lot to learn not just about gaining enough magic to free herself from the mirror, but also about the moral lessons her "sister" the Wicked Queen taught her.

Enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars A GREAT story!!!.......2005-06-16

This was a really great story that almost anyone can learn a good lesson from. I read it in about two days! It puts a new face on the witch queen in Snow White and of course, the magic mirror. It'll make you laugh AND cry!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for both young adult and adult readers of fantasy.......2005-04-18

Mira is a witch and so is her adopted sister, an ambitious young woman who steals life from other creatures and uses the magic to make herself more beautiful. Her thirst for more beauty is never quenched, even when she transforms Mira into the magic mirror. Using the mirror to keep herself beautiful and young, the sister becomes the witch queen. But when the queen falls, Mira is stranded in mirror form until a runaway peasant girl saves her. The peasant girl is taken in by a merchant and his daughter. Using her magic, Mira transforms the peasant girl into the merchant's daughter-and vice versa. Each girl assumes the other's role, seeing their lives from a different point of view. In a series of events, the girls and the mirror learn the meaning of trust and friendship. (M/H) Perfect for both young adult and adult readers of fantasy, MIRA, MIRROR is a gripping read with strong characters, the story of a woman who can show everyone a reflection but struggles to see herself for the person she truly is.

      Book Description

Shelley's Mirrors of Love confronts the myths and realities of Shelleyan narcissism and discovers an artist fiercely engaged with problems of (gender) identity, self-idolatry, and the nature of love itself. Rather than capitulating to what he called "the principle of Self," Shelley obsessively explored its temptations, its dangers, and its antidotes. The book is largely psychobiographical in approach, working with the theories of Heinz Kohut and Jessica Benjamin, among others, as it closely analyzes Shelley's fiction, poetry, and letters.

The book offers the most comprehensive analysis to date of the poet's fluid gender identity, finding strong evidence of an "imaginative transsexualism" that allowed him to identify with real and imagined "sister-spirits" who exemplified the powers of love and sympathy, the greatest of Shelleyan ideals. The latter force receives particular attention as the study turns to scientific theories of Shelley's day, theories that helped the poet envision how the energy of electricity, sympathy, and sexuality converge to create the kind of erotically interpenetrating universe we see at the close of Prometheus Unbound.

5 out of 5 stars The Loves of Samurai and Kabuki Actors.......2002-12-01

I am writing two papers on the novels of Ihara Saikaku this semester and my Japanese history and Japanese literature profs both recommended that I read this book. I found it quite interesting.

Schalow's introduction is very well done, and without it the reader would be at a lost to understand many of the occurences that happen withing the 40 short stories. Also the endnotes are also quite necessary because they enlighten the reader on the locations, bits of poems and literature, and the names of actors that Saikaku alludes to several times in this book. This book should not be looked upon as just being a work of gay literature, Saikaku himself wrote on many other subjects including the lives of merchants, samurai, and womanizers, but one that is important to understanding this period of japanese history, and the personal relationships of samurai and kabuki actors. however, it also should not be used as a stereotypical model.

4 out of 5 stars Unique & exotic short stories.......1997-06-15

Interesting short stories, however there are too many reference/historical notes for each short story. I had to keep flipping pages back and forth constantly - quite a distraction.
This book also contains a 50 page introduction - ten times longer than any of the individual stories contained in the book. However, despite these nuisances, I still enjoyed this book. Only for the serious reader.

      4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2007-01-06

I purchased this item for personal use as I had previously read other books writen by Sidney Sheldon. On reading 'A Stranger in the Mirror' I noticed that I was picturing the events surrounding the characters story line... because of this I found that it captured my imagination

3 out of 5 stars An average Novel by SS.......2005-10-02

I have read SS books before. Most of them are gripping thrillers - this one is not like them . its more r like a biography of a star - his failure, pain, agony, success and finally his death. Still it makes to sit & read .. after sometime u feel for him & adore him. Thats the success of SS narration.
The behind the scene of Hollywood is told in detail.Looks like most of them r inspired from real life incidents. The book starts with good suspense speaking abt the incidents in the ship. Then somehow it drags in the middle and goes for a perfect climax.

1 out of 5 stars For beginners only.......2005-08-21

If you are fourteen and read your first bestseller, you might finish it...
But if you have read more than 10 books in your life..this is soooo boring.

      5 out of 5 stars Sidney Success.......2005-03-16

It's one of the most entertaining book Sheldon has written. I absolutely adore Sheldon, and hope you enjoy this book. In this book, life is not a precious thing, characters die when they need to die. It has a very fast-pace and yet the ending was not what I have expected--it is unpredictable to me at least.

-Is there another cover for the book The Sky is Falling? I dont want to buy the one with the girl laying on the floor.

5 out of 5 stars The dark side of Hollywood.......2004-12-24

This is the behind-the-scenes story of megastar Toby Temple. He rose from poverty to become the biggest entertainer on TV and in the movies, as well as a first-class heel who used and discarded everyone in his path. It is also the story of Jill Temple who ran off to Hollywood with stars in her eyes, but never got her big break, despite experiencing every casting couch in town. She and Toby marry, and then she uses her new power to destroy those who hurt her. Little did she know it would all end in murder.

This novel is a departure for Sidney Sheldon, who usually writes thrillers with beautiful, young heroines facing disaster every few pages. He does know show biz, however, being a prolific Oscar and Emmy-winning writer. Here he creates two characters who manage to be sympathetic despite being completely without scruples, and you'll find the book hard to put down. He carefully weaves characters and details, slowly building to a surprising and very satisfying conclusion. This is a well-written, exciting story about the world of actors, agents, and directors (it's fun to try to guess which characters may have been based on real people). I happily recommend "A Stranger in the Mirror."
