    Book Description

"In 1906 tribal sculpture was ""discovered"" by 20th century artists; these objects had suddenly become relevant because of changes in the nature of modern art itself. These two volumes comprise the first comprehensive scholarly treatment in half a century of the crucial influence of the tribal arts--particularly those of Africa and Oceania--on modern painters and sculptors. In this visually stunning and intellectually provocative work, 19 essays confront complex aesthetic, art-historical, and sociological problems posed by this dramatic chapter in the history of modern art. The main body of the book contains a series of essays on primitivism in the works of Gauguin, the Fauves, Picasso, Brancusi, the German Expressionists, Lipchitz, Modigliani, Klee, Giacometti, Moore, the Surrealists, and the Abstract Expressionists. It concludes with a discussion of primitivist contemporary artists, including those involved in earthworks, shamanism, and ritual-inspired performances."

5 out of 5 stars American Hardcore Is A Good Book.......2007-05-16

American Hardcore chronicals and/or documents the history of the early 80's Hardcore(Punk)scene. Started by angry, fustrated, violent kids in the suburban seaside coastal middle class towns of Los Angeles, this movement spread from city to city and coast to coast. With each location holding thier own individuality, from L.A. to New York, to Chicago to San Francisco, to D.C. to Boston, Hardcore was more than music it was a social movement. Hardcore was a brand new fresh form of punk rock that was all it's own. While it branched off of the 70's Punk scene, it was it's own genre, who's participants constituted a tribe onto themselves. These kids were angry fustrated violent and fed up Regan-Era misfit kids. Becoming intertwined with Surfing and Skateboarding and becoming very close with it(As most of the bands were surfers and skateboarders), Hardcore redifined the status quoe of what was possibele when you did things your own way and you did it yourself(D.I.Y.). Hardcore's music was fast, with songs usually clocking in at around 2 minutes or less, energetic, and contained lyrics dealing with everything form political and social unjustice, to projecting anti-racist anti-war anti-conservative anti-reagan(Ronald Reagan) content and/or rants, with the lead singer usually screaming his or her head off in an angry manner that scared the crap off of (many) new wave fans,Hardcore was one of the most important musical movements in american history. While the mainstream refused then and refused now to give Hardcore the credit that it deserves(Although Hardcore was not looking at all for mainstream acceptance, in fact it was also a rebellion against the mainstream)Hardcore influenced countless things in the mainstream. From the pop-punk movement, to the crappy emo scene currently riding the charts rite now. Hardcore was a new form of radicalism, music, social outrage, political and socail commentary, and altogether one of the most important (musical)movements to ever take place in American History, and this book tells that story.

4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable book.......2007-02-14

For someone as young as me, who wasn't alive during the hardcore scene, this book comes in handy with good information. Steven Blush and others explain the hardcore scene in their own perspective. The entire book is made of interviews from people that were participants in the hardcore scene in the 80's. It includes people like Henry Rollins, Ian Mackaye, Jello Biafra, etc. In the beginning of the book the author and others sum up the roots of hardcore. Later on when they get started on HC (hardcore) they talk about things like straight-edge, Washington D.C., and others, where it gets really interesting to read. You don't have to know anything about HC to read this either.
You can tell Steven Blush didn't want to be biased about the subjects so he tries to put everybody's opinion about everything which basically evens it out by being factual rather than biased. The many pictures including the cover I think are very necessary for the book and display the proper attitude and energy of the HC scene. This book was very easy to understand and even fun to read. I do not recommend this book for very young readers; there are images that can be inappropriate for some. For other mature readers I definitely recommend this book to you, and please...don't judge this book by its bloody cover, it's a great book.

4 out of 5 stars A vivid peek back into the scene.......2007-01-12

As one who was there in the L.A. scene, this was a fun, insightful look back in time. It was also interesting to hear points of view from many of the key people. As it has been a while, it helped solidify the memories and the evolution of how the scene came and went. I loved it. I enjoyed the photos, but would have loved to see more. It's like looking at an old yearbook or family album of sorts.

3 out of 5 stars a pretty good source of information.......2006-08-06

a pretty complete overview of the HC scene, with a lot of good ideas provided for bands to explore that I had either never heard of or really didn't know too much about.

My only complaint is that the Slickee Boys were not a bad joke and that Tru Fax wasn't stupid.

3 out of 5 stars Coffee table piece..........2006-07-16

I read this book from an "alternative" library here in town and I eventually bought it for myself.

I'm not going to bash the book because it doesn't mention "every band" or even many of the bands that I actually liked. It's written by one person... so it's obviously going to reflect the experiences and opinions of that one person. It's not meant to be an encylopedia as far as I know... and in the back of the book he even admits to having ignored any and all information about the things he's talking about that he could have found on the internet. It's his book............. whatever. haha

I think the film will be a lot better than the book because of the interviews with people, hearing things in their own voice but it's not a bad book at all.

It's def. one of those books that you have around and can look through from time to time because of the TONS of pictures and things of that nature. A great book for the coffee table, or bathroom... but no knock against the book.

I enjoyed this book but you have to understand, it's not a set of encylopedias, so don't feel dissed that your city isn't mentioned or your favorites bands aren't mentioned. Some people tend to hate on "American Hardcore" because they feel the author left a lot out.

1 out of 5 stars Pleasure equals happiness?.......2003-12-01

Honestly, has anyone acheived happiness through sensations? Granted, we experience some brief enjoyment, but inevitably, disappointment arrives... Those who seek happiness through sensations are always disappointed: that is why we have the symbol of the Satyr. The Satyr is focused on sensations but he is never content... Be sincere with yourself and realize the truth of this in your life: you can never find happiness through supposed "ecstasy" - you may find a brief moment of escape from the problems, but when it is over you are left with the same problems. This is not Tantra. Real Tantra provides the complete transformation of suffering. One cannot transform suffering so long as one has desire. Desire is the root of all suffering. We suffer because we do not have what we desire. When we get what we desire, we suffer because we are afraid of losing what we desire. There is no contentment. Contentment comes when the desire has been removed; then there is nothing missing, there is peace, joy, the true ecstasy of the Consciousness. This is the freedom of the soul: to be free of all selfish desire. This can be achieved through radical work on oneself. Real happiness comes when there is no anger, no pride, no lust, no fear... This is what real Tantra teaches, and this knowledge cannot be found in this book. This book will teach you to deepen your dependence on sensation, to deepen your lust, to adopt practices whose true purpose you cannot see, and to make you more of a slave of desire... To find the true teaching, read the works of Samael Aun Weor (The Perfect Matrimony, The Mystery of the Golden Blossom), the Tibetan Buddhists, the Buddha, Krishna, Jesus... they all agree: there is no happiness so long as the ego lives in us.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, helpful, and fascinating.......2000-12-07

I highly reccommend this book. It describes the background and philosophy of Tantra without losing the reader. It also provides a guide to Tantric practices, with pictures and instructions, which are easy to follow and positive. This book will show you how to achieve new heights of happiness and enligtenment with the help of a loving partner or alone, although most of the book is geared towards couples and how to work together. I think any couple that reads this book together will benefit their relationship and their individual psyches.

The art of decorating the body with tattoos dates back as early as the Ice Age. Although the use of tattoos among indigenous peoples is waning, the practice lives on, as more and more people around the world discover body art. Peoples from Central Asia and America, tribes and nomads from North Africa and the Middle East, and the Australian Aborigines and Maories have a long tradition of practicing this art. Each design in this pack is unique and carries its own special meaning, whether as religious symbol, talisman, charm, indicator of status or position, or simply an adornment. The Tribal Tattoo Pack includes instructions and materials to create spectacular tribal designs, including four paints in vibrant, earthy colors, transfer sheets, brush, and instructions. The meanings and myths behind the patterns are clearly explained in the history of this fascinating art.

        4 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2007-09-26

This is a very detailed, well researched and written book about the known history of tattoos in Hawaii. However, in trying to design my own meaningful tattoo, I was personally looking for a book that would explain the various meanings of the individual tattoo designs which are common today, which this book does not.

This is a very well written book that truly explains the origins of Hawaiian tattoos and tattooing and brings the practice into the modern time and context.
I would have given it a rating of 5 but felt that it could be greatly enhanced with a glossary of Hawaiian language and tattooing terms.
I learned so very much and I am grateful to Tricia Allen for publishing her research and getting interviews with wearers of Hawaiian tattoos and the tattooists.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Hawaiian Tattoo Resource.......2006-08-28

For those fascinated by Hawaiian and Polynesian tattoos, this is a fantastic resource. There is a great combination of history, mini bios of tattoo artists, as well as stories of current Hawaiian people and their tattoo stories. The book concludes with examples of different patterns and designs, which are common among Hawaiian tattoos.
This is a must for tattoo collectors as well as tattoo shops who stock quality reference material. Mahalo!

For all lovers of Polynesian culture, and traditional native tattoo, this is a book you don't want to miss. It is historical, cultural, and modern at the same time. Tricia Allen is a celebrated tattoo artist in Polynesian circles, and to those of us who know and love the cultural connections her designs evoke. If you are interested in any of these things, check out her website, as well as this book.

        Book Description

A photographic exploration of the modern revival of piercing, tattooing, scarification, and body painting that reveals its origins in tribal culture and practices.

Since earliest times, tribal cultures around the world have used body marks and modifications to indicate membership and rank within the group, identify with spiritual totems, express sacrifice and loss, and enhance physical attraction and sexual enjoyment. Today we are witnessing a renaissance of interest in body adornment that many interpret as a return to our tribal beginnings--a way to identify who we are in an urban world that has lost its sense of community. Return of the Tribal takes a non-judgmental look at a great variety of practices of body adornment and modification--from prehistoric and aboriginal to those of modern urban tribals in cities such as London, New York, Tokyo, and Amsterdam. From the beautiful to the bizarre, the author shows the many beautiful and bizarre ways people choose to alter their appearance.

        1 out of 5 stars Basic.......2007-09-07

While this book contains some great photos (which is what i was really after)the content is fairly basic and perhaps aimed at people who have not yet entered the world of body mod.
It would be a great book to present to young high school kids when attempting to teach them that people are different but that it's all good :)
Like i said, some of the pictures were great but i am otherwise disappointed with this purchase

4 out of 5 stars Not the best, but definitely worth owning!.......2004-05-07

"Return Of The Tribal" is a book that delves into body adornment cross-culturally and throughout history. The book is relatively short, but is packed with great photos and content.

If you don't already own Modern Primitives, you might want to start there first. This book doesn't have as good of written content, though I personally found it to have better and more varied photography.

Overall, the book is a must-have for the library of anyone interested in body modification (either on a tribal level or in Western culture). "Return Of the Tribal" could work as a (small) coffee table book or a reference text. Short, but very sweet.

        4 out of 5 stars a wonderful book.......2001-10-24

if you want to research body modification I would suggest this and Modern Primitives. This book is rich with color photographs and indepth discriptions. A must buy for fans of the modification of flesh

5 out of 5 stars Great photography and very informative.......2001-07-23

I've got many books on tattooing and body piercing and I consider this one of my favourite. It looks at the possible reasons why people in the west get body decorations and compares them to the ritualistic purposes there are in tribal cultures. I like it a lot because it focuses on the ancient and traditional aspect of body piercing, tattooing and scarification. It contains excepional photographs(all colour) and goes into great depth and detail. It doesn't talk about body art in a superficial stand point but considers it as an art with a very ancient history. I feels its a very worthwhile read which i constantly reread and refer to and it never is boring.

2 out of 5 stars Content not as good as pictures.......2000-02-26

This book offers little more to the reader than a collection of full color photos of various forms of body art. It is nice to look at, but the content is very biased and non-scholarly. The author oftens voices his opinion about what is 'acceptable' or 'attractive', and questions people who use body modification to "take things too far". There IS a wide variety of body modification discussed and shown in the book, however, the author often repeats things he had previously stated in the book, making for very little content of value. Overall, not one of the better books on the subject. Check out Bodies of Subversion by Margot Mifflin, or The Art of the Tattoo by Ferguson & Procter for better histories of tattooing, as well as any Modern Primatives issues.

        5 out of 5 stars Tribal Rugs.......2005-05-27

        4 and a half stars
A very informative book liberally illustrated with color plates of some of the most exceptional types of oriental rugs. An excellent commentary written by one of the real gentlemen of the rug business. The author offers some of his own unique theories and insights. Jim does tend to put emphasis on his own particular favorite types of rugs such as Persian tribal rug weaving so know that it is not a comprehensive guide. This in no way lessens the importance of this book. Good as a coffee table book for anyone who appreciates beauty as well as must have for the rug aficionado.

The Native American shaman is a spiritual guide and healer, a man with traditional knowledge, visionary power, and enormous tribal respect. Associated with the rituals of the shaman are objects invested with everyday magic. This lavishly illustrated record of the accoutrements of shamanism among Northwest coastal Indians is the product of 15 years of research by Allen Wardwell, former curator of primitive art at the Art Institute of Chicago. The items shown include amulets and robes, each a tangible echo of shamanistic power.

5 out of 5 stars Tangible Visions: Northwest Coast Indian Shamanism and Its A.......2000-03-29

This work includes a scholarly (but very readable) description of the role of the shaman in Northwest Coast cultures as well as a series of photographs depicting field portraits of shamans and gorgeous color images of artifacts associated with the practice of shamanism: masks, rattles, amulets, staffs, soulcatchers, etc. The writing is elegant and descriptive, and the layout and design of the book is of high quality. Very highly recommended for readers with an interest in shamanism, Northwest Coast Indian art, and anthropology.
