5 out of 5 stars Reviewing "Cigars".......2007-07-23

As a non-smoker I never thought that I would appreciate a book dedicated to such an odoriforous vice as I do with "The Art of Fine Cigars". It's actually a very informative little book that outlines this "smoking art" from the history of smoking cigars, the choosing of the tobacco leaves, the curing of the selected leaves, the storage of the selected ones, all the way to the proper ways of smoking the finished product. Again, I'm not a smoker but I did find what this book had to say interesting. It makes for great topics of conversation at parties and providing trivia knowledge around your friends so they can go on thinking "what a brain!". This book is very compact but very prestigious looking. It'll dress up your bookshelf.

4 out of 5 stars A decent beginners tome.......2001-01-30

The only reason I didnt give it a higher rating is because like anything else these days, this book being 4 or 5 years old, the info on cigar brands is already very dated. The rest of it is a fine read on how to select, light, smoke and care for your stogies.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......1997-04-20

This is a great book if you're looking to get acquainted with cigars. Its truly relaxed approach is best appreciated while smoking a cigar

We have witnessed a reemergence of cigar culture--everyone is doing it, in popular movies, TV, and in the many cigar-friendly clubs which have sprung up. The International Connoisseur's Guide to Cigars is an authoritative guide to fine cigars from around the world. If you don't know a Cuban from a Swisher Sweet, this book will end that confusion! Over 100 full color photographs, fascinating cigar facts, and amusing anecdotes make this a "smoking" book! --Naomi Gesinger

Book Description

Here is the most convenient, expert and well-priced guide you'll find to tell you what cigars are available, how and where you can get them, and what the qualities are of each brand and variety. Like fine wines, exquisite cheeses, or the best caviars, a good cigar is something to be savored and appreciated with unabashed self-indulgence. Learn everything you have to know about the size, texture, age, and taste of cigars produced in America, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. 200 cigar brands are itemized, described, analyzed, and assayed; 80 of them are photographed. The history of cigars is included, and a special section of profiles of famous cigar smokers--from Winston Churchill to Fidel Castro, from Groucho Marx to Lauren Hutton, from Jack Kennedy to Arnold Schwartzenegger--reveals their likes and dislikes.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-11

An excellent guide to choosing fine cigars. I would advise anyone interested in choosing the best cigars to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars It's Fidel-icious! It's Fidel-ectable!.......2002-12-03

A detailed and richly illustrated tome discussing the finer points of cigar selection and enjoyment. As the title suggests, this is a guide for the connoisseur, not the novice. The perfect gift for anyone urbane enough to let a trash fire burn three inches from the tip of his nose.

4 out of 5 stars A great little book........2001-12-07

This book is packed full of useful information.

Written in an easy-to-read formatt, Jane Resnick creates a lively atmosphere that honors the role of cigars throughout the world.

Buy "The International Connoisseur's Guide to Cigars" and enjoy the smeet smell of information.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Work, but is getting dated.......2000-06-27

This is a good reference work for cigar lovers, but it is becoming dated. An update would be appreciated.

3 out of 5 stars Connoisseur's Guide?.......2000-04-18

This is an interesting book with lots of pictures of cigars and how they are made. In fact the information on the process of manufacturing cigars is excellent.

There is one glitch in this publication though. The section on the cigar brands is really not very good. It is a fact that Cuban cigars are notoriously difficult to research but when the brands are listed, with what cigars are made by that brand, this book loses its title of the Connoisseur's Guide. For example, in the listing for Hoyo de Monterrey (Cuban) the list is uncomprehensive and does not list the Epicure No 2 which is one of the brand's signature pieces.

This is an interesting book but it is not a reference (not that it professes to be). The section on Cubans is wholely inadequate but on the other hand, if you live in the US, who cares?

4 out of 5 stars How to Carve Folk Figures and a Cigar-Store Indian.......2000-06-20

I would have to say that this book is a good tool for the beggining sculptor. The book is informative as well as easy to follow. Most of the questions and doubts that I had were answered as I read from project to project. The book is not too overwhelming but rather simple and to the point. The book starts with a good section on selecting and caring for tools. Then briskly moves on to the wood needed and follows through to the projects in the book. Overall, I was pleased with the information gained from this book.

2 out of 5 stars Where are the cigar labels?.......2005-01-16

As usual Ms. Grafton provides color and variety in the graphics; this book on cigar labels, however, only has a handful of graphics which are actually labelled as 'cigar labels.' Some of the graphics only indicate they are related to cigars by the men smoking in the pictures. The graphics appear to be poor copies with no indication as to what they are. They could be pictures taken out of an old magazine with no cigar seals or maker.

    4 out of 5 stars Cigar book.......2007-09-11

A fine book on cigars. I completely enjoyed this book and refer to it often.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Cigar History.......2007-07-22

I just picked this book up recently (2007) and though the book is getting on in age, it really holds up today. The first half of the book discussed history of tobacco, cigars, and smoke shops. The authors can really tell a good story and their historylessons were highly entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful read for the cigar enthusiast.......2002-03-21

The Good Cigar is to your brain what your tobacconist's walk-in humidor is to your nose. It's a cornucopia of history, anecdotes, and general cigar lore that makes you want to relax and stay a while.

Jeffers and Gordon start their history with the original tobacco lovers, the indigenous people of the Americas. Then they discuss the introduction and development of tobacco in Europe and the New World. Jeffers and Gordon acquaint us with many of the people who have influenced our image of cigars (Mark Twain, Groucho Marx, Ernest Hemingway, etc.) and give quotation buffs a nice supply of material. From the "Wooden Indian" to cigar boxes and bands, they explore the history and artistry of cigar paraphernalia.

The authors include a cigar index complete with their personal ratings of each cigar. The book shows its age here, as some of the cigars are no longer sold. This doesn't necessarily detract from the book. You just might run into somebody who's had a box aging for several years and is willing to trade a few sticks. In a situation like this, an older index of cigars would be helpful.

Jeffers and Gordon also cover humidors, cutters, and lighters. They even include a resource guide. These sections might lead the cigar neophyte to believe that cigar smoking is a costly pursuit, but this doesn't have to be the case. Less expensive and perfectly functional accessories are readily available; but as Winston Churchill warned, "Shoddiness can be found easily, in quantity" (I got that from this book). Choose carefully. There are several Internet message boards devoted to cigars that would be more helpful than this book in finding accessories that fit your taste and budget.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fine Reference Work - Bravo!.......2000-06-27

This is a useful and well-written cigar guide. It is getting a bit dated, but it is still very good for all cigar lovers.

From the end of the Civil War until the explosive popularity of the cigarette in the early twentieth century. the cigar was king. For the pleasure and convience of cigar smokers a wide variety of smoking accessories were manufactured, including cigar cutters and lighters. The cutters range from simple vest pocket models to ingenious mechanical contraptions that would occupy a prominent place on the counter of the local tobacconist. In between are beautifully sculpted Vienna bronze and wooden desk models. In many cases these are combined with lighters, to offer the smoker full-service convenience. The lighters range from alcohol dips to electric devices. They are sometimes cast as stunning figures or are elegantly formed lamps, using blown glass or pierced tin. Beautiful color photographs document these wonderful objects, accompanied by concise, informative descriptions. The text places the cutters in their historical context and contains helpful information. A value guide is included.

How interesting can old American cigar labels be? Enough to fill up a full color 250 page coffee table book, at least.

The book is more than just a compendium of old labels from deceased brands, but a history lesson, a seminar in the materials and processes used in generating the labels, and a discussion of the various themes explored in the artwork, i.e. patriotism, women, theater, sports and gambling, cowboys & indians, you name it. Finally, there is some very informative stuff on collecting cigar art, searching for historic labels and estimating value. The book is the most complete work on the subject of this type of collectable Americana, and as such is recommended to all interested in the field.

Any true collector will appreciate Davidson's initial edition, and followup version, "Smoker's Art". For those of us who pore over piles of stuff seaching for a winner, be it cigar labels or anything else, this book is a treasure trove of high quality art.

As a graphic designer this book has served me well on many projects. It is detailed with a large display of labels that are well reproduced for the viewer. The catagories add a variety subjects to the art of labels which is why many of us feel this book is like a bible. It is the most complete book so far on this subject.

    Book Description

Among the most popular and ubiquitous sculptures in nineteenth-century America were the ship's figurehead and the cigar-store Indian. The vast majority of these engaging human figures were created by shipcarvers-highly skilled artists celebrated for their masterful figureheads but who collectively made tens of thousands of shop figures as well, from fanciful representations of American Indians to firemen, baseball players, and fashionable women.

Shaped by nineteenth-century Anglo-American values, this artwork reflects the tenor of the times, including racial and gender stereotyping, America's emerging popular culture, and the birth of modern advertising techniques.

The Shipcarvers' Art is the first book to assess the artistry and history of these two closely related genres in a single volume. Richly illustrated and elegantly written, it reveals the intertwining of art, commerce, and shipcarving in nineteenth-century America. On March 22, 1856, for example, only four months after Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem Hiawatha was first published, the clipper Minehaha was launched at an East Boston shipyard. Its figurehead depicted a renowned English actress in her role as Hiawatha's wife, Minehaha. Central to the festivities surrounding the event were poet, actress, and shipbuilder--and a fictional image of the Native American.

Ralph Sessions not only highlights the work of shipcarvers throughout the eastern United States and Canada but also presents new information on carving workshops in New York City, America's key shipbuilding center from around 1820 until after the Civil War.

Just as they were vanishing from the bows of ships and city streets around the turn of the twentieth century, figureheads and shop figures began to experience renewed interest as museum pieces and collector's items. Representing a milestone in scholarship on the subject, The Shipcarvers' Art magnificently brings them alive once more for art lovers of the twenty-first century.

I collect figures. I have read the books that are used for reference. I have seen the exhibit that was chaperoned by Mr. Sessions (Sandwich,MA., NYC,NY & Baltimore,MD). I am a student of the art he describes! I was impressed by his scholarship, his easy east coast art scene style of writing, his photography/graphics, his hommage to Ms. Sanburn, Mr. Pendergast & Mr. Fried (I knew him). This is not a picture atlas. This is not a coffee table book. I would have liked to seen/read more especially regarding the social relevance of color race &c.(the folly of the time theirs & ours) but this is another matter! I RECOMMEND this book to all who treasure american sculpture. The vulgar artist is finally getting his place(WELL DONE Mr Sessions! What is next?).

5 out of 5 stars ZIPPO COLLECTORS GUIDE.......2007-03-08

Excellent book but not good to have alone. This is more of a supplemental.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Best!.......2005-01-13

Nice pictures, but author knows nothing about Zippo! Captions don't fit the pictures, prices are way off, but its nice to look at. Would not use as a reference book.

1 out of 5 stars Zippo Lighters Book-The Facts PLEASE.......2004-09-03

While the book has some interesting information on the subject of Zippo lighters, I feel too much space is used to show old magazine ads for Zippo lighters. This space could have been used for more pictures of actual Zippo lighters and updated pictures from inside the Zippo factory. The pictures of the plant itself show workers putting Zippos in the old flame boxes which were only used until 1976. The other main issue of my dissapointment was the apparent lack of research that went in to the writing of the book. There are many errors in the style names of lighters shown in the pictures as well as the values. The biggest error that stuck in my head was where they said Zippo manufacturing cleans the lighters before they return them to the customers after they go through the repair clinic.
It is unfortunate that Mr. Pope didn't have the opportunity to finish the book he started, perhaps more research of facts would have been done before publishing.
While the book that David Poore wrote years ago is a bit outdated on the values, it is a very valuable piece of reference material for the novice and seasoned Zippo collector. I would strongly encourage anyone thinking of buying a book on Zippos that they consider Mr. Poores book instead.
