Customer Reviews:
Could have been a free pamphlet.......2006-04-14
I bought this book at Home Depot and returned it after a few hours upon finishing it. I could have got the same information from a free pamphlet. They ought to be ashamed. However, there were some nice pictures and I did learn a little bit, but it was just a super easy primer for the real thing. I didn't buy another book before tiling 900sf in my house. I wish I had bought a better book, as I learned all kinds of tricks "the hard way." Hint: Swimming after tiling all day can return your back to normal when it doesn't seem like anything else will help. I am now going to buy John Bridge's book before my next tiling job.
good.......2005-10-22
This is a good book for people who want to start tiling or for people who have stated but would like to get more ideas, help or tricks.
Ooooo... Pictures..........2005-03-17
This book is more or less useless on it's own. It tries to make tiling look really simple and straightforward. Tiling is actually not rocket science at all, but you really do need to spend time up front deciding what you are going to do. It isn't a weekend project. Get a real book written by someone who actually lays tile professionally and not just by people who sell the latest half-baked do it yourself supplies. I recommend "Tile Your Word" or "Setting Tile". Both top notch books. In fact, get both - given how expensive tile is it'll be worth the money.
This book does have some nice pictures of some steps though. That's about all I can recommend it for.
Book Description
Three of the most collectible lines of vintage dinnerware are throughly explored in this major work written by expert collectors. Colorful Fiesta, Harlequin, and Kitchen Kraft sets made since 1936 by The Homer Laughlin China Company are shown in 592 color photographs and detailed measured drawings along with extensive analysis of the shapes, marks, production methods, and decorations. Their enormous popularity, originally and now, has made these dinnerware lines familiar to four generations of Americans, and this reference will link them with collectors, dealers, and users long into the future.
Customer Reviews:
The definitive Fiestaware® and Harlequin® text........2002-05-16
This is the definitive text on Fiestaware®, Harlequin® and Kitchen Kraft. It was written for collectors by collectors (the combined efforts of the Homer Laughlin China Collectors Association.)
The book has insightful, smart and readable text that was reviewed by experts for accuracy. Each piece is illustrated with gorgeous, professional full-color photos, scale line drawings and details on its manufacture.
Homer Laughlin gave the authors unprecedented access to the original journals of Franklin Rhead, the original designer behind Fiestaware® and Harlequin®, and it shows.
This is more of a textbook than a guide. I find myself using it constantly. For Fiesta and Harlequin® collectors there is no equal.
The *Definitive* Fiesta Reference Book.......2002-02-06
This book, by far and away, is THE BEST for the collector of Homer Laughlin colourware. It has an amazing amount of detail and answers almost every question a person could ask about the dishes named in the title. Measured line drawings are an invaluable help for both the novice and seasoned collector. And it is quite a treat to see photos of nearly every piece in all glaze colours. I found the price guide to be a major improvement over most, as each piece is priced individually by colour.
Readers are treated to a wonderfully accurate history of the dishes. Several rumours that have circulated among the collecting community over the years are laid to rest. The fact that the authors had access to both Frederick Rhead's journals and the HLC modeling logs resulted in a book that is sure to become "The Fiesta Bible".
It is quite refreshing to be able to consult a reference for information, and know that it is factual and free of some author's prejudice and innuendo. This particular book sets a new standard for what collectors' books should be. A MUST BUY!!!
Get the Huxford One First.......2001-10-20
This is a fine quality coffee table type book, with heavy paper and nice color reproduction. If you are an advanced collector who owns every book about Fiesta as well as every piece of Fiesta, you will want this book.
If you are a new collector who has absolutely no idea what any thing is, have no assortment of Fiesta to look at as you read and have no spatial visualization skills, you will want this book because it very pedantically gives every measurement every which way so that you can figure out that your plate that measures 9 5/8 inches is ... surprise commonly called the 9" luncheon plate, and not some "rare, unknown, experimental" due to that extra 5/8". In fact, if you are given to such flights of imagination, especially when pricing your items for sale, please buy this book.
If you are the average collector who falls in the middle, who has seen a set or two of Fiesta, or owns some already, who knows the difference between a bowl and a cup, the tried and true Huxford book, also out at this time in a new edition at about ... and in stock at ..., is the more standardly used alternative, and the one that all but the most novice collector would probably find the better value.
Given the hype-.......2001-05-05
Given all the hype that has been sounded off about this book, I guess my expectations were far too high. I expected something that would make me throw away my Snyder book for the pictures, stop constantly using my Huxford for the information and become enraptured with this one... sorry folks. I found the "one item to a page" thing a little too overdone and self important. Really, MORE information on LESS pages at a LOWER cost would have been much preferred. At 39.95, it is unlikely that I will buy the next (inevitible) edition...- I mean, just how many photos of a single item, followed by a line drawing of the same item, do you need to see?... Huxfords have always kept prices at around $20 per each edition update.... at $40 I would rather buy a piece of Fiesta than (a second edition of) this book. If you can, buy it used or borrow it.
The definitive guide fro collecting Fiesta & harlequin.......2000-12-09
If you are a beginning collector of Fiesta, Harlequin or Kitchen Kraft, this book will be an excellent source of information, particularly with regard to colors, dimensions and marks, the most commomly asked questions. If you are a more advaned collector, there is still a wealth of information to be found in this reference. The inclusion of dimensions for each piece is a subtantial improvement over most collectors guides to dinnerware. An absolute must own for the Fiesta or Harlequin collector!

Book Description
This ninth edition of the Huxford's Collector's Encyclopedia of Fiesta has been heavily revised and updated with new finds. This book has long been considered the best reference for collectors and dealers. Introduced in 1936 by the Homer Laughlin China Company, the colorful Fiesta dinnerware was redesigned in 1969, withdrawn in 1973, and reissued in 1986. This encyclopedia showcases this vibrant dinnerware line, featuring over 1,000 colorful pieces, including coverage of the increasingly popular new lilac color as well as other colors in the new line. There are many new photos that will aid in identification, including several never before seen pieces. In addition to the regular line of Fiesta, this all in one resource includes the other popular lines of Harlequin, Riviera, and Kitchen Kraft. Also featured are experimental items from the Homer Laughlin morgue, as well as the historical information so many collectors crave. In addition, there is a pricing breakdown on the original Fiesta price list. Gorgeous color photos, accurate information, and current values - what more does a collector need? 2001 values. AUTHORBIO: After writing their first book, The Story of Fiesta, published in 1974, the Huxfords became pottery editors for Collector Books and in that capacity wrote several other books on various Ohio potteries: Roseville Pottery, McCoy Pottery, Brush-McCoy Pottery, Weller Pottery, and Roseville Pottery, Volume II. Since 1982 they have been editors of Schroeder's Antiques Price Guide; Schroeder's Collectible Toys; Antique to Modern; Garage Sale Flea Market Annual; and Wanted to Buy. REVIEW: Full-color plates and suggested values in a range format are a great trading tool in the secondary market while informational pages provide an armchair education in Fiesta. The book includes identification of trademarks, design and color, as well as dating codes and English measurements. The story of Fiesta takes collectors back to the beginning and the value guide reviews all Fiesta-related dinnerware such as Kitchen Kraft, OvenServe, and new (post 1986) Fiesta. -Brimfield Antique Guide
Customer Reviews:
I am a newbie to Fiesta.......2007-09-27
I am brand new at collecting Fiesta Ware. I really enjoyed this book. Great pics. It has been a wealth of info for someone new like me.
FIESTA.......2006-07-27
This is the third book in this series I have purchased by these authors. I like the book a lot.
A jumbled up mess.......2006-01-24
One of worst of the newer "collector" books out there. There isn't even a color chart with the names, you need to deduce them by flipping through all the pages and guessing at collections of variuos colors and doing a process of elimination. Fakes are mentioned, and the author says "you'll know them when you see them". Thanks alot! All the marks aren't even listed. What about newer peices versus old?
Some Encyclopedia, more like ramblings of a collector. The medium green issue is already covered by others, the book mentions it everywhere but gives very little evidence of it (maybe the author has medium green envy?).
Not worth the bargain price spent on it. Certainly not a reference book.
p.s. I give other collector books 5 stars, so I'm not just a grump.
Huxford's Fiesta 10th Edition.......2005-08-06
I just received the 10th edition copy of Collector's Encyclopedia of Fiesta, and other related items. The new layout and design are exactly what this edition needed to set it out above the previous ones. It seems the forward is a bit lengthy. Each page is framed in the turquoise color. The new pictures are numerous!! And for those who collect New Fiesta (produced since 1986, the pages for this are expanded to include up thru Scarlet and quite a few of the pieces produced thus far in color pictures. I rate this book at 4 stars for one reason. I feel the prices are inflated and out of line. Yes, there will always be some "rare" items at high prices. There are a fair share of pictures that are the same as previous books as well.
A Good Beginning.......2005-07-10
The title of this book "Fiesta" can be a little misleading to the novice or seasoned collector. Beyond actual Fiesta and Fiestaware by Homer Laughlin the author's detail company history by delving into Harhequin, Riviera, Mexican lines, Kitchen Kraft, even promotional items and advertising.
For Fiesta identification pieces the pictures and Plate descriptions are very good. Pictures, specifically are very clear and concise while the page quality is excellent. In particular, this book will provide a very wide range of history and the wide variety of products offered by Homer Laughlin Co. over many years. Although the title suggests a book on Fiesta, this portion is limited.
If your looking for price comparisons or rule of thumb the book is weak in this department, it does not effectively handle all colors preferring to provide information strictly on the "hot" collector pieces such as 'medium green.' Of course, prices quoted in books are strictly "guides" as the internet, antique malls and live auctions mix up values on a weekly basis. Current research and personal perspective will be the true guides for market value at any given time.
Fiesta is covered in the first 73 pages of this book (pre/post 1986) and then moves on other topics or products produced. This book would be a fine starter for the novice but additional resources will need to be added for a complete library on Fiesta and Fiestaware.

More fluff than substance - Green glass "unknown mfg".......2006-01-31
After absolutely loving Mauzy's Depression Glass book this one was such a huge disappointment. The pictures are huge, many 1/2 a page, which seems was done to make the book appear more meaty.
Many of the green pieces are labeled as "unknown manfacturers", almost comical is a row of tumblers and sherbets (another row of vases) listed as "various manufacturers". That section of the book seems like they went to someone's house and just pictured each piece.
The coverage of salt and pepper shakers is quite good, almost as if that is what the book really was before adding "fluff" items. Very little information (such as dates) is given, though.
With the little information given, I just don't trust the prices as being any guideline whatsoever. Disappointed.
Update: I found the prices listed are 5 to 10 times realistic pricing, even for the fanciest shops. Even more disappointed now, it has cost me money.

Potter's Reference.......2005-04-18
I found this book at the library and studied the ceramic forms in it so many times(and paid enough late fees on it) that I decided I probably needed a copy.
It's a good reference book for a potter even if it's different from what you produce. It's loaded with visual information.
I love the intro pictures of the 19th century English potteries.
Beautiful Color Photographs.......1999-07-29
As a novice collector of yellowware bowls I found this book to contain much general information from the history of kitchen ceramics to specific styles. The detailed color photographys are simply outstanding, showing numerous styles within each category of ceramic, and even goes so far as to point out the individual characteristics of pieces made my specific potters. This quickly became my favorite reference book and one I will never part with.
Visually appealing but not very informative!.......1999-03-18
This was a beautifully done book with wonderful pictures! The major problem I found with it is that it only covered four or five of the major brands of collectible kitchen ceramics. I ordered it under the impression that it covered a vast range of kitchen ceramics. What proved to be even more disappointing was that there was no price guide! I guess if you're an experienced collector of yellowware, redware, ironstone, etc. this would be a great book. For a novice such as myself, it proved to be relatively useless.

My first time tiling and this book definately takes you through step by step. Talks about tiling floors as well as walls and countertops. Mostly illustrations but done well enough to understand what each procedure entails. Packed with tips and experts' insights. I high recommend this book and "Setting Tile (Fine Homebuilding)" by Michael Byrne.

Worth it for the story alone, of course the rest helps........2005-02-28
So what sets this book up to be any different than any other collectible book? "The Laughlin story" We came real close to calling this Shakespeare pottery. Just the history and the changing technology is worth reading about.
After that is my favorite. "That Radioactive Red"
As the title implies there are sections with stories on Harlequin, Riviera, and Kitchen Kraft
In the back there are suggested values and a list of Collector Books for further reading.
One major item, the pictures are in color.
The Bible of Fiestaware.......1997-12-03
Whether you have 2 pieces or 200 pieces of Fiestaware, this is the best handbook around. The Huxfords explain Fiestaware's history thoroughly. The collector will also be grateful for the many beautiful pix and credible pricing guidelines. As my dog-eared copy can attest, the guidebook will become your best friend when Fiesta shopping!
I give this book a 10, but I hope the next edition - which is rumored to be out in 1998 - will address the new Fiesta line as some colors are now very collectible.
