Book Description

These days, whether you're designing a building or a toaster, a savvy knowledge of materials is increasingly critical. And keeping up with the constant flow of new materials, let alone their applications, properties, and sources, is an increasingly difficult and time-consuming task. Blaine Erickson Brownell, author of Transmaterial, known to thousands of web users for his "product of the week" email service alerting designers to new materials that are reshaping our world, has created this handy and affordable reference to the most interesting and most useful new materials now available.

Transmaterial is indexed in multiple ways for the sake of maximum convenience, and utilizes the new CSI Master-Format 2004 product categorization system. With more than 200 materials, organized by category, described, pictured, and annotated with technical and sourcing information, this catalog is an essential tool for any architect or designer interested in keeping up with the rapid developments in the field of materials, looking for a source of inspiration for their designs, or just eager to get their hands on real materials in an effort to understand the incredibly innovative palette now available to us.

4 out of 5 stars A good catalog.......2007-05-13

Overall, it is a very good catalog for material types and technologies. I wish they also had some pricing information.

1 out of 5 stars never received the book!!.......2007-05-07

its been 3 months and i'm still waitting for the book!

3 out of 5 stars it's like a well made catalogue .......2007-01-11

Not bad informations in it because it covers so wide range of architectural materials, but its depth of knowledge is rather shallow.

It might be good for a reference when you need something new but there's no special derection on it.

1 out of 5 stars Transmaterial Damage.......2007-01-10

Book was probably excellent as expected, but it arrived at my Post Office box in Darwin Australia badly damaged. I tried to contact Amazon to complain, and send photos of the damage, but the Amazon delivery site does not provide a 'complaint' option, and the Amazon home site does not appear to have a 'contact us' option.
I know there aren't many real live people out there in the commercial world, but if anyone from Amazon happens to read this, could you please contact me and advise how I can send you details of the damage?

4 out of 5 stars Artist's view.......2007-01-05

All the entries in the book were clear and well-presented. I particularly liked the format with different sections relating to types of materials. Colour photos of most products were useful in evaluating the materials and their possible uses. In fact, they were very inspirational in their potential for artwork. It was also good to have contact details for each product - the only disappointment being that some companies did not respond to our email enquiries (which is not the fault of the book).

Book Description

Electric vehicles have many advantages over their gas-powered counterparts. They're ecologically sound, much cheaper to operate, and require almost no routine maintenance. Drivers can enjoy the clean-running convenience and economy of an electric vehicle for as much as it costs to buy a new car. This illustrated guide explains step by step how to build an inexpensive EV from a kit or convert an existing internal combustion engine. Build Your Own Electric Car begins with an informative history of electric vehicles, current international advances in EV technology, and a look ahead at the future of EV development. Then, author Bob Brant gives a building-block description of each EV component-motor, drive train, controllers, power supplies, chargers, and chassis-and how to put them all together to make a working vehicle. He also gives valuable advice on where to find affordable EV components and systems, how to get the most out of EV driving and ownership, and how to make the best buy, build, and conversion tradeoffs.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad - a little dated, but better than most.......2007-07-30

Compared to my other review on the book: "Convert It.", this book is much better - at least it's a real "paperback"! The material is more up to date, however it is still somewhat dated. The newer controller chips available, tranformer technologies and battery technologies are described in a forward looking way... however these items are now easily available - so the book doesn't address them very well, they weren't reality at the time. Still a good read to get a comparison of different concepts. Your money might be better spent doing research on the pricey, but high tech Tesla Motors car. There is 2007 technology at work!

5 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to the subject........2007-05-30

If you're not already sold on why you should consider an electric car, this book should help. It covers the pros/cons of buying, building or converting. Before you consider converting a car to be electric, read this book. I suspect spending a little now for knowledge might save a lot later when it comes to buying stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Down to earth, well versed material. Very good reading........2007-03-07

No matter if you just want to learn a little more about EV technology or consideting to build your own Electric Car, this book will give you a wealth of information on all sorts of EV related topics. The book starts with EV history, then goes into EV practicality, then onto currently (well in 80's) available off the shelf technology, vehicle design, physics and aero dynamic principles and finally you get a walk through an actual EV conversion process. I like this book for the way it's formed and the way it flows. The author writes in plain language with plenty of advise and tips. Everything is simple, just like an EV is such a simple machine at it's core. After reading this book, you will get a clear picture where technology stands with EVs, why Internal combustion engine dominated our means of transport and finally how to desing and construct your own EV. Overall great book. One drawback however, this book is written in 80' and has a lot of hopes in it, which is sad to read at times. Like when author talks about newly developed prototype of GM Impact (later renamed EV1) the author puts high hopes for this progect, yet we all know what happened to this effort. You will want to read "Convert it" by Michael Brown after reading this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great! But update!.......2007-01-18

I'm reading this book again and again before I build my own. The info is timeless, but I know the world of EV has changed in 15 years.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book if you plan to convert a car to electric.......2006-10-23

The title says it all really.

Look this book is somewhat dated, and half the book seems devoted more to theoretical graphs and charts, facts and figures and the like, plus arguing why we *need* to switch to electric vehicles for city use.

However, having said that, it's well produced and you get 300 plus pages for less than US $ 14. (almost "double the book for half the price" compared to some others) This book is worth every penny and then some.

The contacts pages, (pages and pages of them) pre-dates the internet boom so has NO useful urls or email addresses. However with the many names and snail-mail addresses you could probably track businesses down easily enough (plus I'm a guessin' they still have the same phone numbers ! ).

I would look forward, at some future date, to an updated revised edition of this book being published

Until that happens, (if ever) I'd have no hesitation recommending this as one of the several texts that any novice car converter should read before starting their first conversion project.

Catherine, Outback Western Australia.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2007-10-03

I have read many technical books and this is so far the best. I know my way around computers and the basics of programming and wanted to learn some more of ASP.NET. This book has been an excellent tutorial. Even the basics of object oriented programming and SQL are explained. Loved it.

There is one caveat. The book was written for Windows XP and IIS 6. If you are using Windows Vista and IIS 7 like me, be prepared to search for some stuff yourself. Do not worry though, some Googling will help you along the way.

    4 out of 5 stars good for beginner and semi-experienced asp.net developers.......2007-08-23

i got into dot net when it first came out, when sample codes on how do things you take for granted were scarce or non existent. I was converting an ASP app to dot net. was ahead of my time, ran into too many mundane issues, cancelled my project after 5 months. Now I want to try ASP.NET for real.

I've found this book to be very helpful in connecting the dots. The samples are good enough . Highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars I found the right book to learn asp.net.......2007-05-24

I am an asp programmer. And I would like to transform myself into asp.net. after trying one title after another by reading the PDF files that I found on the net, I thought I found the right book ASP.NET 2.0 Unleashed from Stephen Walther. I bought the book and learned from it. But I got stuck somewhere after the basic controls. The author assumes that the reader is either intermediate or advanced level with the .NET programming skill. I am not at that level yet. Again I went back to find other PDF files and I found this one and I knew this was the perfect fit for me. I bought the book and I am very happy with this book. it teaches asp.net 2.0 from beginning level. It explains in details all the basic knowleges that an asp.net programmer needs to know. Then it moves on to ado.net. But all these are just basics only. not going too far into advanced level. One thing that I like is that I build the project while learning. There are minor wording error. If you don't know programming, then this is the problem. If you already know programming (VB,C#), then you can see the wording error and correct yourself.
If you are looking for a book that set you up from start with .NET, this one is the right one. If you already have the basic of asp.net and would like to get to the advanced level, then you may be disappointed.

    3 out of 5 stars Its a good book.......2007-02-24

The Book overall is good, but there are some mis-types in the code that, if you follow along, will screw you up. Its also vague about some things, but if you have some basic knowledge of visual studio and/or asp, it is a good reinforcement.

5 out of 5 stars Here's all the information you need to get up and running with ASP.NET.......2007-02-03

Examples, insights, and even code samples pack a reference for programmers working in C# and VB in an updated second edition to a popular step-by-step guide. Here's all the information you need to get up and running with ASP.NET, from how to build a first web site to applying the free code samples within to more advanced projects. It's a top pick programmers - especially newcomers to ASP.NET - won't want to be without.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Useful and interesting - STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.......2005-02-08

Despite the intimidating name and size of this tome, I found it fascinating to read. It covers everything from light bulb selection to rooftop chiller maintenance. The depth and breath of coverage is amazing.

This is not a hippie guide to backwoods eco-conservation. It is a practical manual, firmly grounded in science and economics that explains different strategies for maximizing comfort while minimizing energy use. In every case, the author examines both the pros and cons of the measure, and calculates the expected payback term. It is so helpful to have a book that is realistic in its treatment of energy conservation. Lots of books outline promising energy saving techniques, none I've read before talk so frankly about the problems you will encounter when you implement them.

Quite technical in many places, the text excels at explaining important concepts that are often ignored in other texts. I have a background in physics, but not until reading this book did I have a good grasp of the operation of absorption coolers or how the spectrum of a light bulb affects the visual comfort of the scene it illuminates. The concise overview of heat transfer mechanisms is more thorough than any thermodynamics textbook I've ever read.

Most important of all is the practical advice that is clearly based on a huge body of real experience. As the book so frequently points out, energy saving measures are useless if they break or are defeated by building occupants. Hundreds of (non-obvious) examples of these failures are given, with pictures.

This book would be great for anyone with responsibility for designing or maintaining buildings of any size. If you are hesitant to pay the high price, find it at a local library. I don't write many Amazon reviews, but after reading this book I felt compelled to strongly recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Superlative! A must have!.......2003-12-08

Superlative!  The ENERGY EFFICIENCY MANUAL by Donald Wulfinghoff is a "must have" for professionals, libraries, facility managers, policy makers, homeowners, and anyone else who is serious about saving energy and cashing in on lower energy bills. It is the ultimate energy saving resource for businesses, industry, and government. PLUS, it will save money and reduce pollution, satisfying corporate bottom lines, policy makers, and environmentalists all at the same time. This book is unique. Highly informative, illustration-rich, and user-friendly, it is treasure trove of everything you need to know about energy efficiency from A to Z. Don't bother looking elsewhere -- the ENERGY EFFICIENCY MANUAL simply has it all. This book will pay for itself almost as fast as you can spot a hot air leak or install an energy-efficient light bulb!

    -- Amy Vickers

5 out of 5 stars A secret weapon for the energy auditor.......2003-07-01

As an energy auditor I'd almost call the Energy Efficiency Manual a secret weapon, except it has so many good ideas that I can't help but show it to many of the customers and prospective customers I meet. The diagrams are very useful, as is the self contained but well cross-referenced way in which each improvement measure has been written. For example, talking to the maintenance manager of a hospital, we looked at the diagrams of hot/cold deck multi-zone systems while discussing the pros and cons of upgrading a constant volume air conditioning system to a variable volume system. It is by far the most useful book on energy management that I have ever read (well, in the case of the Energy Efficiency Manual, that I have partially read - its an enormously large book!), and the ratings of each of the measures are particularly useful, along with the practical, no-nonsense approach. The book is extremely well cross referenced and Wulfinghoff has covered an enormous body of knowledge in writing the book. As someone fairly new to the field I'm grateful that he went to the effort of documenting and making available his knowledge and 30 odd years experience in the Energy Efficiency Manual.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you always wanted to know, in plain English.......2001-04-25

I nodded my head in agreement while reading Wulfinghoff's philosophy about energy savings in commercial and light industrial facilities. He distills 20+ years of experience in this field with practical, no-nonsense how-tos to gain energy and dollar savings in a wide variety of facilities and end-uses: lighting, water use, steam systems, space heating, water heating, air conditioning, scheduling, pumps, energy management controls: its all here in a well-written, well-illustrated book.

Perhaps best of all, the author goes beyond theoretical considerations of high-tech efficiency products, with precautions of what works and what might fall short. He also reminds facility managers to be mindful of the human factors that can foil our best efforts. He offers suggestions on how to plan and manage efficiency upgrades complete with information for building operators and occupants, so that the savings persist.

Highly recommended for anyone managing energy use in facilities, ranging from individual buildings to college campuses to government facilities. [I am a local government energy manager myself.]

5 out of 5 stars Provides practical advice for avoiding pitfalls.......2001-02-04

Donald Wulfinghoff's Energy Efficiency Manual is a massive, 1,536-page reference work that is organized to guide the reader quickly to the right information for their particular energy project, problem, or inquiry. The first part of this "user friend" manual has 400 logically grouped activities for improving energy efficiency. each activity begins with Ratings and a Selection Scorecard to help the reader judge the merits and difficulties of that particular activity. "Economics" sidebars estimates the savings, cost, and payback period. The "Traps & Tricks" sidebars provides practical advice for avoiding pitfalls plaguing energy conservation efforts. Energy Efficiency Manual will earn back its cover price over and over again and is an essential, core reference for personal, professional, and community library energy conservation and energy efficiency reference book collections.

      Book Description

"Raymond Chen is the original raconteur of Windows."

      --Scott Hanselman, ComputerZen.com

"Raymond has been at Microsoft for many years and has seen many nuances of Windows that others could only ever hope to get a glimpse of. With this book, Raymond shares his knowledge, experience, and anecdotal stories, allowing all of us to get a better understanding of the operating system that affects millions of people every day. This book has something for everyone, is a casual read, and I highly recommend it!"

--Jeffrey Richter, Author/Consultant, Cofounder of Wintellect

"Very interesting read. Raymond tells the inside story of why Windows is the way it is."

--Eric Gunnerson, Program Manager, Microsoft Corporation

"Absolutely essential reading for understanding the history of Windows, its intricacies and quirks, and why they came about."

--Matt Pietrek, MSDN Magazine's Under the Hood Columnist

"Raymond Chen has become something of a legend in the software industry, and in this book you'll discover why. From his high-level reminiscences on the design of the Windows Start button to his low-level discussions of GlobalAlloc that only your inner-geek could love, The Old New Thing is a captivating collection of anecdotes that will help you to truly appreciate the difficulty inherent in designing and writing quality software."

--Stephen Toub, Technical Editor, MSDN Magazine

Why does Windows work the way it does? Why is Shut Down on the Start menu? (And why is there a Start button, anyway?) How can I tap into the dialog loop? Why does the GetWindowText function behave so strangely? Why are registry files called "hives"?

Many of Windows' quirks have perfectly logical explanations, rooted in history. Understand them, and you'll be more productive and a lot less frustrated. Raymond Chen--who's spent more than a decade on Microsoft's Windows development team--reveals the "hidden Windows" you need to know.

Chen's engaging style, deep insight, and thoughtful humor have made him one of the world's premier technology bloggers. Here he brings together behind-the-scenes explanations, invaluable technical advice, and illuminating anecdotes that bring Windows to life--and help you make the most of it.

A few of the things you'll find inside:

      2 out of 5 stars "casual read".......2007-08-21

Let me quote some the reviews: "casual read", definitely; "interesting reading", somewhat; "essential reading", not much for programmers until Chapter 7.

      5 out of 5 stars Perfect insight.......2007-07-25

I absolutely recommend this book to every geek interested in Windows history. It sheds perfect light on some "Why is it?" aspects of Windows and also has some nice low-level-stuff related reading.

You will love Raymond's writing style!

      4 out of 5 stars Definitely enjoyable.......2007-04-03

As an old C++ programmer, I can appreciate some of the pearls of wisdom in this book. If helps you to understand why some things work they way they do in Windows and other Microsoft software. It has some code in it, but you needn't be fluent in C or C++ to understand it. Chen has excellent storytelling ability, and it's a very enjoyable read. For "long time" developers - this is a "must read". For newer developers, this should be required reading to help understand the guts of Windows and how things operate. I highly recommend this book for all Microsoft developers. Use this as your "fun reading material", for it's not a programming book.

5 out of 5 stars The true insiders guide to Windows.......2007-03-06

Raymond Chen's book is a technically deep, thoughtful, and delightful view of writing great programs for Windows. He brings the history of the world's most widely used APIs to life and offers first-hand insights as to the why and how APIs do what they do. It is a great book for current programmers using Vista or old-hands just wanting to remember some of the fun of original Windows programming. Read this book and put it to use to make your Windows programs even better!

4 out of 5 stars Filled with great articles on useful Windows bits.......2007-02-25

This book is full of highly-entertaining articles on everything from why you can't install Windows via XCOPY to the evolution of Win32 dialog templates. OK, maybe I don't find the bits about dialog templates so interesting, but the rest of the book is full of very interesting topics on how Windows has come to be what it is.

Chen has been in the Win32 world at Microsoft for a very long and really, really knows his stuff. He's very skilled at what he does and is very forthright about what he doesn't know. His show on DotNetRocks was much along the same lines as this book: lots of very deep dives into areas of his expertise with clear disclaimers "That's out of my realm."

So what use will this book be for folks who are outside the Win32 arena? First, it's a nice background on some basic Windows behaviors like why the Shutdown option is under the Start menu, what overlay icons do, why registry files are called hives, and odds and ends about internationalization. There's also a lot of content which is applicable to folks in any domain: taking appropriate care with world-writable files, the impacts of server paging, or general bits about developing sort routines.

Secondly, the book is just plain entertaining. Chen writes in a light, humorous fashion and manages to make most of his articles very interesting. (It's impossible to make a couple pages of example machine code immensely exciting, but Chen comes close.)

Overall the book's a good skim for folks like myself. I'd say it's extremely important if you're involved with Win32 development -- and that means .NET folks who are doing a large bit of Interop programming.

it is very helpful, and explains in details and in a simple way, what we need to know.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book crammed with information.......2006-11-11

Mr Bradshaw does an excellent job in presenting an enormous amount of information in a very clear manner. It is an overview, yet it gives very detailed information. It is aimed at architectural students, which I am not, but I needed information and this has helped me enormously.

      Book Description

What "really constitutes an architectural atmosphere,” Peter Zumthor says, is "this singular density and mood, this feeling of presence, well-being, harmony, beauty ... under whose spell I experience what I otherwise would not experience in precisely this way.” Zumthor’s passion is the creation of buildings that produce this kind of effect, but how can one actually set out to achieve it?

In nine short, illustrated chapters framed as a process of self-observation, Peter Zumthor describes what he has on his mind as he sets about creating the atmosphere of his houses. Images of spaces and buildings that affect him are every bit as important as particular pieces of music or books that inspire him. From the composition and "presence” of the materials to the handling of proportions and the effect of light, this poetics of architecture enables the reader to recapitulate what really matters in the process of house design.

4 out of 5 stars Its 'NOT' Thinking Architecture.......2007-05-14

The book is written as a dialogue taken from a lecture, which has had minimal editing. This gives a good insight into Zumthors thinking and inspirations from the cuff,so to speak.

The disappointment is that there is not a lot of grounding theory or thoughts as well defined like those in his essays in 'thinking archtecture'. My feelings are that some ideas are repeatative but presented from a different perspective.

However if you are a true Zumthor fan, you would know that there is not a lot of published material so when its there! Get it!

Very happy with the book i bought! Great quality book either in contents and manufacture. I recommend!! Zumthor is the master!

      3 out of 5 stars avdaycare.......2007-09-28

great book for centers & pre-schools, but for my small family childcare (infant/nursery) I found it did not have NEAR enough focus or information directed towards newborns and crawlers, specifically nap, changing & eating areas or indoor floor play.
if you have an older crowd (30 months +) then yes, this would be a good idea resource for you, however I like my baby-babies...

I DID get a couple outside-play ideas for my 18-24 month olds, but for me personally--simply not enough to justify the cost.

      5 out of 5 stars GREAT Book!.......2007-05-21

For those who work with children or want to some day- students, teachers, Child Care providers, etc.----- This book is wonderful!! It gives you full color photos of interesting and innovative designs for environments for children to live, learn and grow in! They also share basics about details and main elements of designing spaces for children! I LOVE this book!

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-04-10

Zillions of wonderful photos and great, easy-to-read text makes this book a must-have when setting up your classroom or playroom. Very child-centered, fun and inspiring. I couldn't recommend this book too strongly.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for any pre-K, preschool, or kindergarten teacher!.......2007-04-05

This book is perfect if you are looking for a way to transform even small spaces in your room...it asks you to look inside your classroom and look at all of the "dead" spaces, or where children aren't learning as best as they could in that space. It's easy to transform based on small suggestions. I know I will keep this book and use it for years to come...I was truly amazed! (WOW!) The pictures are also amazing, and the authors of the book are fantastic...they truly know early childhood education.
