An American's delightful stay among the Shaolin monks.......2007-09-28
American Shaolin is an amusing and insightful memoir of a young American's experiences while training with Shaolin monks in the 1990s. It is the kind of book that you will read in a few hours. I especially like the author's mostly positive attitude toward his environment. I compare it favorably to Paul Shirley's memoir as a basketball player, in which Shirley mostly complains and puts down his fellow athletes. In this book, the author has respect and awe for the monks, and it is satisfying to watch him approach their level of expertise. While it is nonfiction, the book follows a narrative structure and is essentially a coming-of-age story. Frankly, I'm suspicious of his success as a kungfu kickboxer. It is hard to believe that someone with months of training can defeat someone with years of training. However I do not think that he fabricated any of the stories. Rather, he chose the anecdotes that fit his storyline of physical (as a martial artist) and personal (as a man) growth. Thus, he starts with a few missteps and then describes a few more successes. I have one slight quibble: at the end, he refers to his respect for China's devotion to its culture, which I thought he could have referenced earlier in the book, to show his progression to that respect.

As a travel narrative, the book is excellent. It's easy to learn a lot about the Chinese culture from this period of time, and the local characters are likable, well-written, and complex. If read as a memoir, however, it's difficult for me to get over the fact that the author just isn't very likable. He begins as a self-centered college student, and never really evolves all that much. Sure, he gets stronger and more skilled at his art, but I was never able to sympathize with him. No matter why this is the case, the book is mildly recommended if read for what it is--a light travelogue for those interested in China or martial arts. Those looking for an example to follow or a character for which to root ought look elsewhere.

On the surface, the book seemingly appeals more naturally to men, but it is great book for anyone who welcomes adventure, likes rooting for the underdog, and loves great writing ala PJ O'Rourke and Christopher Buckley. Matt Polly is a great new writer -- I'm hooked.

Everything you wanted to know about Prussia.......2007-08-27
This is the most indepth and thorough book on Prussia. Everything from wars to religion to the nobility to the common people. I read this book hoping to change my view of Prussia. I admitt I'm among those who have a negative view of Prussia and hoped this book would help me to understand Prussia more. It certainly did. I found the wars of religion very interesting and how Prussia was attempting to keep its balance itself between the powers while it was in the Holy Roman Empire. I liked reading about the common people. Its really an excellent book with only two problems one is how the author kept going back and forth. It would be on 1700s and then jump back to the 1600s or on Frderick the Great and it would jump back to another elector. It was a little annoying. It would have been easier if the author did everything on one subject and then moved on to the next. Or one elector to the next. Secondly the author takes such pains not to blame anything on anyone like if Prussia was in war with France or Austria the author spent so much of the time on why the war wasn't Prussia's fault or France's or Austria's instead of explaining how things started in the war and the reasons for Prussia being in the war (which was what I was hoping learn) that it was hard to understand exactly what the author was trying to say or even what the author's own thoughts were.
The Prussianization of Modern Germany?.......2007-08-23
From the beginning of the 17th century, and particularly from the end of the Thirty Years War (1648)until the end of the Weimar Republic (1933), Christopher Clarke has done a thorough rendering and analysis of how and why the Hohenzollerns succeeded in uniting Germany under Prussian auspices, reaching its apogee in 1871 under Otto von Bismarck, Prime Minister of Prussia and simultaneouly Chancellor of 2nd Reich Germany. However, in the aftermath of World War I, and especially with the onset of the Nazi period in 1933, the analysis seems to disintegrate or is incorrect. Certainly the Weimar Republic was in trouble from the beginning in that the Prussian bureaucracy, to include the justice system, was left in place, and the fact that Hindenburg was elected president twice are illustrative that Prussian-mindedness was still in control and anti-republic. However, while Hitler may have exploited the Prussian mindset and sympathies, he was definitely anti-Prussian. In a sense Hitler was the most genuine "German revolutionary" in the modern era. National socialism was not predicated on Prussianism. One must keep in mind that the NSDAP was a Munich-based and then a Bavarian movement, not a Prussian one. Hitler bludgeoned his way to power by-passing the Prussian military with the S.A. under Ernst Roehm. He only dispensed with the S.A. after the Nazis were already firmly in power and President Hindenburg was dying. By that time Hitler had the Wehrmacht where he wanted it, subodinate to the dictates of the Party. Unfortunately, Professor Clarke tends to gloss over this suggesting that there was a continuum of the Prussian thesis.

Heads up, students and scholars: Dr. Clark's tome is a prime example of how historiography is properly done: well researched, well written, well documented, entertaining, informative--(although I do like a few more maps and illustrations).
This could go on any short reading list of European history.

Worth the time invested.......2007-06-19
Very well written, Clark keeps the pace going while touching on the many issues involved with the history of Prussia. I bought this book because I found that I had learned very little about Prussia or Germany for that matter in the course of my high school and college education. It seems there is a distaste for the subject that is left over from the association of Nazi fascism and militarism with Prussia. Clark sets out to show that this is an incorrect association and does so convincingly. Full of helpful illustrations, photos, and maps, Iron Kingdom comprehensively covers the political, economic, and social history of Prussia, focusing on the key institutions, people, and moments that influenced its success and then its fall.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

This book covers the basics and fundamentals of steel design in such a way that provides a great reference for the structural engineering student or professional. Possibly the best book you can find in the field.
I've been using it since graduate school and through the years as a consultant in structural engineering.
The Standard.......2006-11-20
This is simply the best book on steel design out there, and anyone interested in learning the subject needs to read it. It covers the crucial aspects of the AISC code in a unified manner and is quite readable. The authors begin each topic in the book with the detailed background mechanics behind the observed structural behavior and then proceed to verify these ideas with experimental evidence. Next the authors explain how the the code provisions result practically from these ideas. Finally, the authors offer a number of solved examples in design and analysis and explain the methods used to solve them.
This is exactly the way that a book on design should be put together. The code is not a black box, but sometimes it can be presented as such. In order to properly design or analyze a real building, you need a firm grasp of the basic and not so basic principles of structural mechanics and the empirical evidence that backs it up; you can't simply be a "Code Monkey" and expect to do a whole lot more than determining if a W10x16 or a W10x14 should be erected. Salmon and Johnson really explain steel structural engineering in this book, and if you make an effort to seriously learn the material, you will gain tremendous dividends in your understanding of these complex and interesting topics.

This book thoroughly describes design procedures with numerous examples using both LRFD and ASD design, exactly what I need as an intern engineer. Sometimes I find the examples difficult to follow when units are not carried through and commentary left out; however, details are plentiful enough to eventually catch on. The AISC Manual of Steel Construction is constantly referred to and thus necessary to follow examples fully (I broke down and purchased it). Lastly, readers should be on the lookout for typos as I have spotted several.
Still the Best General Steel Structural Design Book Available.......2006-01-15
Given the available books on the market for general steel structural design in the U.S., this is by far the best. The breadth of topics covered is abundant without any sacrifice in depth of full backround and commentary, which is sorely missing from other books of this kind. The layout and presentation of information is very clear and readable.
Although a new edition covering changes in the industry since the last publication would be greatly appreciated, the book taken for when it was published is still very applicable for use now (despite reviews to the contrary given below). Any competent engineer can adjust to changes in industry standards as the base material given in the book is very solid and sound.
The proof in the outstanding quality of this book is trying to use other similar books in the market today, which generally fall short in comparison.

Steel Design covers the fundamentals of structural steel design with an emphasis on the design of members and their connections, rather than the integrated design of buildings. Not only is Steel Design a revision of LRFD Steel Design, it also encompasses the 2005 unification of LRFD and ASD as is covered in the Steel Construction Manual. The book is designed so that instructors can easily teach either LRFD or ASD, or both, time-permitting, as the differences in the two approaches are mostly conceptual. The application of fundamental principles is encouraged for design procedures as well as for practical design, but so is a theoretical approach, enhancing the students development. While the book is intended for junior-and senior-level engineering students, some of the later chapters can be used in graduate courses. This is a very in depth book, Robert Bly goes into great detail drawing parallels between the Iron John story and mythology. I haven't finished it yet but so far it has made it quite clear why there is such a gap in the male psyche today.

This book is a must read for any man living in the world today. And for any mother who wants to know what to do with her son, most especially if she is raising him as a single mother. This strikes a real cord with me because I grew up with a single mother - and I lacked a strong male role model for most of my teenager years. And the result? A lot of confusion, a lot of self-doubt and this with a combination of other factors led directly to a nervous breakdown when I hit 25. You could say that I was never prepared to deal with the harsh reality of the adult world or you could say that I was to immature and the pace of my life was so fast I could not acclimatise quickly enough.
Yes, I have a father and we have not been close for most of my of my life especially after he remarried. Now his 2nd wide has passed away 8 years ago and my half-brother is almost 21. There is a divide that is deep and sometimes painful. And since I grew up with my mother I have a much closer relationship to her and my 19 year old half-sister. How have I dealt with this in the past? With anger, with frustration for being deprived from growing up in a "normal" family unit. This led to more self-loathing then anything else so I turned outward to find my own role models, especially masculine, in the great books of history. I studied the classics from the West and the East. And I eventually reached a point where the simplest advice turned out to best for me: accept everything as it is. Thank God I never spent years of therapy trying to figure this out, which in retrospect seems like the kind of common sense my mother always claimed I didn't have when I was a teenager.
Anyway Iron John is a mythical story of a boy's journey with the Wild Man and his separation from his mother and his father. The basic element that we find missing in the modern world is that of male initiation. Now living in South Africa I know all about male initiation, especially among the Xhosa people. There has been growing resistance from the government to close down these initiation schools because of the lack of medical expertise where the boys end up suffering injuries. Could it be that more and more of the ancient knowledge or know-how of how to best conduct these rituals have been lost? I think we have reached a critical point, post the feminism revolution, the decline of fatherhood, and the rise of single parent (mother) families, which causes a severe imbalance in the male/female polarity that is needed. When the Yin/Yang balance is distorted to this extent we find that weak men are all that's left.
There is so many analogies from this book, which has been brought to my attention via other sources, most notably the seduction community, because is an attempt to restore the balance. How many times have you observed in a Hollywood film, a sitcom, or a cartoon the idiot man with his intelligent wife/girlfriend who point him in the right direction. How many times have you met men, who are unable to articulate themselves, who do not live with a passion or a purpose. They become like zombies living lives of quit desperation. How can the modern man meet the wild man inside him? He can push himself to do something of extraordinary courage and learn from it. Maybe climb Kilimanjaro or run the Comrades or stop denying your father, your masculine, because you need to draw from there the energy that can sustain you through your life. This book is an excellent big picture of the current problem men are facing and for specific help on how to overcome these problems I highly recommend The Way Of The Superior Man: A Spiritual Guide to Mastering the Challenges of Woman, Work, and Sexual Desire

This book had some decent passages, but I found most if it rather dull. The endless mythology made this one of the longest reads that I've ever had. If you're looking for good books on men I suggest The way of The Superior Man and Fire in the belly.
Reaching the wild and hairy animal king within all men........2007-06-16
Robert Bly explores the wild man, the king of the animals, the hairy man, in this expanded exploration of the Grimm's fairy tale of Iron John. Bly makes careful and thoughtful connections between the hairy underwater Iron John and the images of John the Baptist, the wild hairy man of Christiantiy.
One especially helpful aspect of Bly's analysis is that it is through a wound that the male is reborn. Connecting this concept to the birth of Dionysus from the thigh of Zeus, he indicates that all men carry a wound from their boyhood and it is by the passing through this wound on to the other side that the man is initiated and becomes whole in his own masculinity and adulthood. Men are often wounded by their fathers during childhood and thus have deep buried feelings of not being good enough to meet the father's expectations or memories of acting foolishly in front of the father. Bly would say that the story of Iron John is that men must find the hidden wild man within them that guides them through the wound into adulthood. The wild man, the hairy man, Iron John, thus becomes a second father and initiates the young man into the world of adult masculinity. In Bly's conception, men must move beyond the wounded state and must explore the wound and move beyond it to be able to experience the full power of masculinity and adulthood. We have all known men who are the sons of smart, wealthy, talented men and the very brilliance, success, and abilities of the father wounds the son. The son is wounded because he will never be as honest, or as giving, or as respected, or as accomplished, or as wealthy, or as famous as their father. Being the son of a successful man is in itself a wounding process. However Bly would say that to be a boy or male adolscent is to experience the wound, all men become wounded, and those that move beyond it experience a new renewed masculine power.
Bly would say that in our post-industrial society, men remain wounded into their 40's because there is no initiation that gives them the new wild father and allows them to move beyond the wound. I am not sure I agree with this. In fact, I think that the US military often is the initiator of many young men in our society, that they are attracted to the life of the warrior so that they may heal the wound inside by entering a world of wild warriors, some of whom are senior fighting men who act as the second father.
Through the poetic works of Blake and Yeats, Bly connects the reader to the archetypical wild hairy man that is the internal second father and potential adult power. Bly points out the many connections to the wild man, including Hermes, Ulysses, and others.
Why is Iron John under water? He is underwater as a clear symbol that he exists in the unconscious of the male mind. We must dive to reach him, we must go into the dark nourishing waters below to find this wild and frightening giant with his power that he can bestoy on any man who is wiling to move beyond childhood and adolscent shame and feelings of inadequacy and to move toward power, energy, and action. When man talks with the wild man, it is about power and strength.
In exploring the myth of Iron John, the young man must be able to steal the key to Iron John's cage of underneath his mother's pillow. This task is essential and means that the boy must betray his mother to become a fully powerful masculine man. Like Hermes, the trickster, he must use his wits to steal the key and unlock the cage of Iron John. He must also have the courage to confront face to face the giant hairy powerful inner masculine force of Iron John. In primitive societies the men put on animal skins and kidnap the boys to initiate them. In our society, no such rescuing of young males by older males occurs and so boys become rude and hostile and obnoxious to their mothers in anger that the older male or males have not initiated them into the world of men. Our society has produced remote distant fathers and their sons resent it.
This is a thoughtful book for men, integrating the thoughts of Jung and others, so as to present a picture of the male reclaiming his whole masculine power.

If you have some basic knowledge of LRFD design and connection. This would be an OK book. It contains so many example in many load cases and connection type. All of them are hot rolled steel or high force connection. In example it dose not tell how to retrive this equation, reference to variables, and how to use this equation.. you only have to guess. If you guess right, then it can be applicable to real construction.

Tamboli's connection handbook complements the AISC Connections Manual beautifully. In a clear, easy-to-follow way, it addresses all of the major procedures for connecting structural elements and the philosophy behind them. The handbook uses thoughtful examples and good photos to explain how connections work and are built. The tips it gives, especially for connections to composite members and space trusses, are particularly helpful in practical design. I have never seen a more complete, quality connections manual, and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their knowledge of the latest connection techniques.

I am a civil engineer. I have been studying and designing steel structures for years. In Vietnam, this type of structure is not popular, and nobody knows how to make it good, make it beautiful.
The only thing I really want right now is to be the one of the best in area of designing steel structure.
So, this book may bring me some good knowledge, some new idea. That's all. I do want more information, like a sample of pages, picture, drawings, what can be included in this book

This book is written by various experience P.E. or Professors. It is not emphasis on practical calculation. There are very few example and definitions for formulars and related equation. If reader has no experience before, it would be very difficult to understand. Half of the book is devoted to bridge design, and it dose not provide enough information to design a bridge..
