Michael Furman is perhaps the most in-demand photographer of automobiles today, and after one peek inside this large, fetishized monument to the great flowering of the auto industry after WW II, it's easy to see why. Huge fins, bright gleaming chrome, and colorfully glowing paint speak of incredible optimism and consumption of natural resources. A swell companion piece to his Motorcars of the Classic Era, Furman is capable of focusing on details that really make a particular car stand out while never losing sight of the importance of the overall design. There are things you totally expect to see here, like the fin from a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Seville or the deco/ Futurist "angel in flight" hood ornament for the 1947 Nash Ambassador Suburban as well as full side views of the 1951 Buick LeSabre and 1959 Firebird III (which still look like they came from the future for rides to the moon in total comfort). But even the biggest car aficionado will see these immaculately-restored museum quality rides in a different light through the clearly obsessed lens of Furman, whether it be the fin and light detail of the 1956 De Soto Adventurer or the oil cap on a 1959 Fiat Abarth Record Monza Bialbero Zagato! It's hard to think of a better gift for a fan of cars from this era, aside from one of the cars. --Mike McGonigal
Book Description
The postwar era marked the emergence of all things American, and in the 1950s, cars led the way. The brilliant colors-pinks, blues, yellows, and reds-soaring tailfins, and grinning, wide-mouthed grilles of the 1953 Buick Skylark, 1957 Ford Skyliner, 1953 Firebird III, and 1959 Cadillac tore up the country's pristine superhighways and dotted the parking lots of new suburban shopping malls. These and many other striking models, which expressed the national optimism and pride of 1950s America, are featured in this elegant volume of images by renowned automobile photographer Michael Furman.
The book contains more than 150 stunning photographs of these motoring icons, many never before published. An informative text and an illustrated index of technical information describe the unique qualities of these spectacular cars, each more imposing in design, size, and power than the preceding models. Furman's technical virtuosity and exacting eye for detail make this unparalleled collection of photographs an eye-popping delight, an invitation for car lovers of all kinds to rediscover an era when the American automobile was king. AUTHOR BIO: Michael Furman is a nationally recognized specialist in automobile photography. For more than 25 years he has photographed important launches of such vehicles as the Nissan Altima and Quest, the Mercedes CLK, and the BMW-7 series. He is also the author of Abrams' Motor Cars of the Classic Era.
Customer Reviews:
Five star pictures in a three star frame.......2006-04-28
Have autos looked any better than Michael Furman's stunning photos, I doubt it. These vehicles look just perfect with liquid looking bodywork and perfect chrome, in fact they probably look better than ones just off the assembly line. This is fine art photography and if you wonder how the 'Furman look' is achieved there is a clue on his website. Click on BIO and you'll see a shot of his studio with an amazing looking light panel hovering over what looks like a very small car. It seems to me that his controlled lighting source is the key and when digital images are printed on quality paper with a 200dpi screen you'll see the perfect picture as on these pages.
The choice of cars seems rather arbitrary, classics like the 56 Austin-Healy, the 58 Ferrari Testa Rosa or the 59 Cadillac Eldorado are a few page turns from possibly the ugliest chrome grill ever of the 51 Hudson Hornet or the bubblegum styling and color scheme of the 56 Ford Crown Skyliner. As well as whole cars there are plenty of lovely close-ups of logos and styling features, the fins of the 48 and 59 Cadillacs, a Buick 49 Dyna-Flow trunk handle or the hood ornament of a 57 Oldsmobile Super 88. Furman's photography can make any vehicle sparkle.
Awe-inspiring as all these photos are I was very disappointed with the book because it is the wrong shape. There are seventy-one side shots of cars and they clearly don't fit an upright page. They rightly have generous margins left and right which means they are even smaller still on the page. If the book had been turned sideways into a landscape format it would perfectly complement these profile photos so instead of being small and surrounded by too much white space the existing ones would be three or four times larger. Another advantage would be to avoid the middle of the book splitting those shots that do extend over a spread. Also, for a lavish photobook it has the usual conceit of placing all the captions on back pages but because of the wrong shape there is plenty of white space on each page for the captions to be set in some elegant typography.
Michael Furman takes beautiful auto photographs and it is unfortunate that this book does not give them the exposure they rightly deserve.

Mike Does It Again!!.......2004-11-29
This book is another loving tribute to those classic autos that can send shivers up your spine sometimes, they're so cool. I simply cannot see how Mike's photography can be improved upon in any way, shape or form. Buy this; you won't regreat it, promise.
beautiful!!!!.......2004-11-08
Micheal Furman created an amazing collection of car photography. You're taken by the beauty of the different design of the era. Excellent gift for any car enthusiast.

Customer Reviews:
Breathtaking photography - good content.......2007-01-19
The cover of this book caught my eye. As much as I love the technologically advanced new era of Ferrari, I have a warm spot in my heart for the older cars, both race and road.
The photographs in this book are outstanding. Many are from angles that catch the beautiful handiwork wrought by the craftsmen of these early machines. There is no effort to hide the effects of age on these great machines. On the contrary, there are photographs of the fuel tanks, filler caps, camshaft covers and suspensions with spots of rust and the dings of use evident in most of them.
Rather than detracting from the cars, these photos add life to them. Most of the examples in this book are in lovely shape, but many have not been completely restored - actually a great thing.
Two things may keep this from being your favorite Ferrari book. First, it contains mostly race or race/GT cars. It is not an exhaustive catalog of all Ferrari models from inception to date. Secondly, certain cars only have 1 or 2 pictures and these may not be from the most encompassing angle. Other have 6-8 photos including the classic side shot. This may be a bit frustrating for some readers, especially those not fully familiar with all the models.
The models include 375 F1, 500 F2, 375 PLUS, 750 Monza, 250 GT Tour de France, 315S/335S, 250 GT California, 250 Testa Rossa/58, 250 Testa Rosse/59, 250 GT SWB, 196 SP/246 SP, 250 GTO, 250 LeMans, 275 GTB/GTC, Dino 206S, 330 P3/412 P, 512 S/512 M, 312 PB, 512 BB LM, F40/F40 LM, F333 SP, 212 E Montagna, 312 T5 Formula 1.
The text in each section describes the racing history of each model and gives a technical description. I found a few misspellings in the first two chapters (all I have read so far) but these may be a result of translation.
Overall a handsome book that I would not hesitate to put on the coffee table. It is sure to start a conversation.

The Corvette book of the year.......2007-02-16
I own a C4 Corvette and try to buy every Corvette book that comes out. I was given a truly bad Corvette book for a Christmas gift this year ("Corvette: America's Sports Car: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow" by Jerry Burton), a cheesy, vinyl-covered tossed-together collection of factoids and tired photography. I went out and bought this one myself. This is the book all Corvette owners should own. It is a well-written history of the Corvette that is so complete it serves as the ultimate Corvette resource book. Best of all, it's filled with 100s of never-before-seen photographs from GM Design's archives. That alone is worth the price of admission. If someone got you that low-rent red vinyl Corvette book as a gift, bring it back to the store and exchange it for this one.

Book Description
When Ford's attempt to buy Ferrari fell through, the US car giant embarked on a program to beat the famous Italian marque at the world's most prestigious race, the Le Mans 24 Hours. It was quite a battle. Ford's challenger was the GT40, which placed 1-2-3 at Le Mans in 1966 and won the next three consecutive years. This classic book about the GT40 - fastest sports racing car of its day - has been redesigned, expanded and updated to meet pent-up demand that has pushed the value of the original 1985 edition higher and higher.
Customer Reviews:
The Ford that Beat Ferrari: A Racing History of the GT40.......2007-08-23
This is a good book, but not a great book. I own several other books by the author, John Allen, on similar subjects and there is a definite bias towards a british view of the subject. I have read about every book available about the mid-sixties era of racing, especially the Ford contribuiton. Although I feel very knowledgeable on the subject, this book still filled in many empty areas I have on the subject and did it in a fairly enjoyable fashion. Having already stated I own many books on this subject I still am happy that I purchased this one. It is one of the better books on this subject. Enjoy
If you are going to buy a book on the GT40, this should be the one........2006-12-20
There are a couple of other great books on the GT40, but this one has some of the best period photographs along with its well written text. Other books also spend a lot of time covering the 1966 LeMans MK11s and the Gulf liveried LeMans winners of '68 and '69. This book does cover them as they are historically important cars, but the privateers like Comstock and Scuderia Bear are also covered.
Chapters cover construction and testing, races such as LeMans, Sebring, Daytona, and the many private GT40 teams and cars.
This book should be on every racing enthusiasts shelf.
Porscshephile GT40 fan.......2006-02-17
The book in question..."The Ford That Beat Ferrari: A Racing History" turns out to be exactly that...as well as all that was implied by by Amazon's outstanding website. I know that this sounds like a " so what " statement, but it's not. I find most things do not live up to thier hype. So, when something does, it IS note-worthy.
As a side-bar, I am not your usual Ford fan. I am a die-hard Porsche nut...six real cars, hundreds of models and a complete library of all books ever written on the subject. So, why the deviation? Easy! It seems that a great many of the best drivers of Porsche race cars came over from Ford...and this fact provides me with yet another perspective. I highly recommend other Porschiphiles do the same. As Paul Harvey says, It just might give you " the rest of the story ".

Book Description
First published in 1969, this classic manual of automotive repair equips VW owners with the knowledge to handle every situation they will come across with any air-cooled Volkswagen built through 1978, including Bugs, Karmann Ghias, vans, and campers. With easy-to-understand, fun-to-read information — for novice and veteran mechanics alike — anecdotal descriptions, and clear language, this book takes the mystery out of diagnostic, maintenance, and repair procedures, and offers some chuckles along the way. This edition features new information on troubleshooting, new photos, and an updated resource list.
Customer Reviews:
VW Convertible Maintenance Help.......2007-09-13
Prefer this manual to Chilton's for our VW Convertible. Drawings are concise. Tips are geared to what isn't working and then gives suggestions on what to try first. Also contains list of parts (used, re-manufactured and new) dealers and their websites which is very helpful since no one carries parts for our 1970 Convertible here.
My first car, my first repair manual.......2007-09-11
This book, with its tongue-in-cheek humor and fun attitude towards one of the most personable cars ever, literally put me on the road in my first car. A VW Beetle with no floor, a barely-serviceable engine, and a million and one problems was no match for the The Guide, as my dad and I called it. It was by our sides as we rebuilt my first car, then my second... entertaining and informative -- a MUST for anyone who owns an air-cooled VW and wants to perform their own maintenance or repairs.
Time to update this book.......2007-09-09
I've had this book for over a year now and feel compelled to write a review to offset the rave reviews this book continues to get. While I'd be the first to agree that it's very easy reading I have yet to find it truly helpful when I get into a difficult problem with my '69 bug. Lots of good, folksy philosophy, but don't look to this book to help you through a complex problem. In their attempt to make it a book to satisfy all VW owners, many sections are simply way too high level and generic to be of specific value.
Most of the R Crumb inspired drawings are great to look at from an artistic point of view but isn't it time to include some real photos? There are a lot of subtle differences in VW components over the years and a one-picture-fits-all approach doesn't cut it. After all, it's supposed to be a 'how-to' book, not a coffee table book.
Hard to believe that in 19 editions, little has been changed or updated to make it more user friendly - certainly there are better how-to-do-it guides out there - it's time for John Muir's successor's to either update this thing or put it to rest.
I caution any purchaser to not rely on this book to get you out of a jam if you aren't a seasoned VW mechanic.
Useful Item.......2007-08-01
I've recieved the item in very good condition. It's very useful that I can make money out of it. Not many people knows on how to repair that kind of car here in my place.
vw nuts.......2007-07-20
For those of you who are VW nuts but are not the most adept at mechanics this is a great book. It breaks everything down to simple step-by-step processes and has useful photos and instructiosn within. I have been able to address some complicated problems by using this book that is written for the layman. A good choice if you have an old VW. I have a 1964 and it's been a great reference source. Now if I could find a genie who would do the work ...

My father and I just got back from visiting The Nethercutt Museum. The book does a great job of bringing the museum home with you. If you can get to the museum you can pick up a copy of the book at the reception desk for [money]-a bargain.
Great Book for Great Cars.......2000-06-14
For the first time, all of the automobiles in the Jack Nethercutt Collection are pictured in one book! This book exhibits all the characteristics a book on automobiles should have. Using it's horizontal format to great advantage, photographer Dennis Adler displays all of the cars in all their glory. Mr. Adler understands his subjects and each photograph shows exactly what the viewer would wish to see. The text is short, concise, and highly accurate. Due to space limitations, there is little technical data. This is not missed. Also touched upon, are the Nethercutts' collection of mechanical musical instruments-- pianos and automotive mascots. This book has my highest recommendation and exhibits better photography and more taste than some books costing many times over.

Book Description
It's the fantasy of every car enthusiast: Pull a tarp off a pile in a barn, or hear a farmer say ""there's an old car out back"" and discover a classic collectible such as a Hemi 'Cuda, a rare Porsche, or a Jaguar E-Type racer. Many such tales told during enthusiasts' bench racing sessions are urban myths. But this book is full of true tales of rare gems pulled out of haystacks or junkyards-and there are before and after photos to prove it! Author Tom Cotter uses his engaging writing style in telling the tales of found Cobras, a rare Delehaye found disassembled in Czechoslovakia that eventually won Best in Show at Pebble Beach, a Ferrari racer found in a California woodchip pile, and several more. Cotter traces the early histories of the cars, how they were discovered, and where they are today.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Book If You Love Old Cars!.......2007-09-13
This is a really interesting book if you're into hunting old cars like I am. It has some great stories, and if you're a car guy it will make you want to go out and hunt for cars that people have hidden away and forgotten about. Don't think that all of the good cars have been found yet. As this book proves, there are plenty left if you are willing to do a little searching and aren't afraid to get your hands dirty. I found an old '68 Corvette convertible that was wasting away in a guy's backyard shortly after buying this book. He wouldn't sell it to me because he said he's saving it for his grandson to restore. Oh well, the search continues, and really isn't that half the fun?

I enjoyed the book and was very pleased with the fast shipping and condotion. Thank you!
The Cobra in the Barn: Great Stories of Automotive Archaeology.......2007-01-20
The book contains many interesting stories of long lost or forgotten classic and antique autos. These stories are fascinating for those interesting in the history and preservation of the automobile.
Fun, inspirational.......2007-01-12
This is a pretty inspiring book; it makes you want to go on a treasure hunt! Well written and a fun, quick read.
Cobra in the Barn a hit!.......2006-11-05
The Cobra in the barn is an excellent book. The stories are interesting, fact filled, and entertaining. The short length of each story makes you eager to get to the next one to see what new, exotic car will be discovered. Some of the stories are heartwarming, some are sad. The rescue of the car and it's eventual return to glory is the satisfying conclusion in most cases. However, not all stories have a happy conclusion.
Overall, an excellent read for those of us who enjoy the automotive hobby, and it should appeal to those who enjoy a good, historical story as well.

Book Description
Is it time to rebuild the axles or install a locking differential on your vintage Jeep vehicle? Does your CJ model need a frame-off restoration? Between these covers you will find the unit repair and overhaul steps for completely rebuilding a 1946-1971 Jeep CJ! If engine, transmission, transfer case, axle, steering, electrical or metal restoration seem difficult or beyond your skills, here is the fix! Jeep vehicle expert, automotive instructor and author of the Jeep® Owner's Bible, Moses Ludel demystifies the most complex service procedures.
Talking with hundreds of enthusiasts at his Camp Jeep® workshops, Moses discovered that hobbyists and professional Jeep vehicle mechanics alike want heavily illustrated, step-by-step `how-to' manuals. For the Jeep vehicle owner who finds the typical workshop manual impossible to decipher, Moses Ludel breaks ground with this book. No longer will you struggle with pages of text steps and an occasional photograph. The author and photographer/illustrator of more than 2,500 magazine tech articles and five popular Owner's Bible books, Moses undertook the Jeep® CJ Rebuilder's Manual to meet the needs of Jeep vehicle owners and restorers. With this ambitious effort, Moses launches a series of `how-to' rebuild manuals with a photograph marking each technical step.
At the onset, Moses stripped a vintage CJ model to the bare frame, photographing every step in the process. He then disassembled and rebuilt each subassembly of the vehicle---again under the detailed scrutiny of his camera. All procedures are thoroughly explained, and even the most complex mechanical concepts can be readily understood.
For an authentic restoration to original equipment standards or sensible upgrades that will enhance the performance of your vintage Jeep CJ, this is the book. Moses Ludel brings his mastery of Jeep technology into your shop!

Not a good source of info - look elsewhere. .......2007-09-10
This book covers modified vehicles. There is little info on stock CJs. Although it covers a V6 model, it is NOT a factory V6, which was a big disappointment for me. There is much info on how to modify and update old CJs, which isn't a bad thing. Just make sure you know exactly what you want before buying this book, and your old CJ for that matter!

Jeep Cj Rebuilder's Manual - Moses Ludel.......2007-01-04
Mr. Ludel continues his tradition of awesome Jeep reference books. The book follows Mr. Ludel as he resores a 55 CJ-5, mechanically similar to earlier models. Lots of great information. Highly recommended.
Helpful and Detailed.......2007-01-03
This has been a really helpful tool for me in my rebuild of a CJ5. I was satisfied with the amount of information provided which seems to be better then most other books i've purchased.

The 1932 Ford, the Deuce, is among the most important automobiles ever produced. A landmark car for Ford, the '32 introduced Henry Ford's groundbreaking V-8 engine, bringing the iconic engine configuration to the masses for the first time. Now 75 years after its introduction, the Deuce continues to be the foundation for many a hot rod. Deuce: 75 Years of the 1932 Ford is a complete history of the car as it was built, and as a hot rod and race car. The 1932 Ford Deuce was a landmark achievement for Ford, featuring an eight-cylinder flathead engine over the usual V-8 designs. While many books focus on this groundbreaking model, few take the time to place it in perspective: for that you need Deuce: 75 Years of the '32 Ford. Chapters offer up a complete history of the car's design, changes, influences, and racers. Vintage factory photos and details about each model provide a wide-ranging survey of the changes incorporated into the Deuce over the decades.

Mustang 2005 : A New Breed of Pony Car (Launch Book)
ASIN: 0789462443 |
Book Description
A celebration of America's beloved Pony Car, from its splash debut to the sophisticated seventh generation. No sports car has ever captured the heart of the American consumer in quite the same way as the Ford Mustang. Here is the saga of the Pony Car throughout seven generations of design and technological innovation. Beautiful full-color photographs and comprehensive text illustrate the Mustang's complete history, year by year, including interior and exterior evolution, racing advances, and the people behind the development and success of this American icon. Development and Evolution: Ford Mustang is revealed to the public on April 17, 1964, and the love affair begins! Patrick Covert traces every aspect of one of the automobile industry's most fascinating stories, from its concept car beginning to the debut of America's first affordable sports car and beyond. The Muscle Car Era: The Mustang grew bigger and faster as the musclecar era began to take root. The envy of all the other automakers, this little sports car is credited with spurring a whole new generation of American fun machines known as "pony" cars. Ultimate Mustang has all the details from technical specifications to beauty shots of the most powerful beasts. The Shelby Mustang: Carroll Shelby, a race car driver who specialized in turning stock cars into fire-breathing dragons, packaged specially tuned versions of the Mustang. The first four generations of Mustangs were beneficiaries of this Shelby treatment, out of which game legendary names, such as the GT350 and the GT500. Whether you have a pony car in your own stable or have always wanted one, Ultimate Mustang is the only comprehensive guide to this phenomenon of the American automotive industry.

Great "My First Mustang" Book.......2007-07-09
If I was just beamed down to this planet and needed to learn about 1964.5 to 2001 Mustangs in a day then this would be the book. Nice, concise and lots of pretty pictures. I did expect a lot more cut-away drawings from DK however since I do love their travel guides for that feature.
For those who are only interested in the first generation Mustangs (1964.5-1973), this book is not for you since half of the book is devoted to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation Mustangs.
For twenty bucks, a nice addition to any automobile enthusist library however.
Great Book on a GREAT car.......2002-12-28
The book has a lot of info.I may be 12 and a girl but I LOVE Mustangs.I can refer to my book to get info on a 69 429 Boss. But I wish it had the original list price! The pictures are great! Not only does it have old Mustangs but they also have newer mustangs as well.I enjoy seeing the evalution of the Mustang
Awesome book-- for any Mustang Lover.......2001-09-12
This was a gift for my boyfriend--a Mustang owner and lover! He loves it! It's very informative, has great pictures, and information on the history of the Mustang. This book includes the number of models reproduced and he loved that aspect! Not only does it include info on the cars itself but Mustang Memorabilia!! Too Cool of a Book!
For The Mustang Lover.......2001-07-15
The Ford Mustang has had a love affair with Americans since its inception. This book, with polished photos, easy to read format, and brilliant content is a must purchase for any car enthusist.
The book traces each generation of Mustangs as well as the difefrent varations in each "family." It shows the car in all its glory as well as its failures. We get to view the Shelby's, Saleens, Cobras, Mach's, and GTs as well as the pathic Mustang II Coupe. The reader will also get a glance at Mustangs production models and designs.
If you like the American pony cars, then you'll love this book. Long live the Mustang!
Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About The Ford Mustang!!.......2001-06-26
This is one great book. The cover for starters grabs your attention and when you open the book, Wow. Great photos, information, and the history of the Mustang all rolled up in one excellent book. I have always loved the Ford Mustang, as I am sure many of you who are considering this book are. And I promise, you will not be disappointed with this book. From development to its muscle car era, even great info on the Shelby Mustangs, and the late models, including the new Bullitt for 2001, this book has it all. The price is a bit high, but when you see this book, you will know the money spent is well worth the price of the book. This is a DK book, who makes some of the best books that explain things in laymens terms, for me what a lifesaver! I have the Star Wars books they produced, and this Mustang book carries on in that tradition of explaining to the reader what things mean, why one car had this option, and this car did not, how many cars were produced in a model year, what motors were offered, when the motors were first offered, why Carroll Shelby stopped making the Shelby Mustangs in 1970, why the Mustang has the following it does, and so much more. I would type more, but I am limited to so many words, but take my word, this is the Ultimate Mustang book. For the beginner just discovering Mustangs, this book is a great starting point, and for those of us who have known what it is about a Mustang, this book just adds to the mystique and does not disappoint. I say buy it. If you love the Mustang as much as I do, [your] money will be well spent. Just a great book all around!!
