Few inspirational authors can put together a romance like Lori Wick, whose Bamboo and Lace is peopled with intriguing characters set against the two exotic backdrops. Shy, lovely Lily Walsh leaves her rural homeland, the tiny Asian country of Kashien, to visit her brother Jeff in Hawaii. Everything is new and exciting to Lily: grocery stores that overflow with food, chewing gum, coffee makers, and the luxury of hot showers. Most thrilling of all is Jeff's best friend, the handsome Hawaiian Gabriel Kapaia, who teaches her how to play tennis and golf, and encourages her to become more assertive. Despite her conservative father's disapproval, Lily falls in love with Gabe and must choose between pleasing a parent and following the tug of her heart. Although the book loses a little steam toward the end, Bamboo and Lace is a solid contribution to the Christian romance genre, and should win Wick some new readers and as well as satisfy her legion of fans. --Cindy Crosby
Book Description
Bestselling author Lori Wick sails readers to an exotic island¼and an intriguing romance.
Lily Walsh has spent all of her 24 years as a missionary’s daughter on the Asian island of Kashien. Isolated from the western world, she devours the letters she receives from her brother in Hawaii. When her father reluctantly allows Lily to visit Jeff, she is thrilled–until he is called away.
Left with the Kapaia family, Lily awakens to a new understanding of God’s love and of who she was created to be. Returning home, her deepening friendship with Gabe Kapaia and her faith are tested by her father’s increasingly stern ways. Will her obedience cost her the desire of her heart?
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorites.......2007-03-02
I have just recently read this book by Lori Wick, and was delighted to find a similar heart-warming story, as i have found in her previous works. Lori Wick did a wonderful job integrating two unique cultures into one in this book. Not only was the book interesting, but also informative, as i was not very well educated on all Asian customs. This book is a great read for anyone looking to be transported into another world. Excellent book!!
mediocre, in hindsight.......2006-09-09
when i first picked up this book, i devoured it and liked it despite small quibbles--this was right after it was published. but picking it up again and looking through it, the book struck me as good storytelling, but second-rate. it's true--the characters are far too perfect. the situations far too contrived. and the part that bugged me the most was her invention of a whole culture just for a book, where she arbitrarily throws in ideas (some chinese, some from thin air, etc) so she can have a plot vehicle. the problem is that kashien, from an anthropological view, would not fit in anywhere in asia. this seems like a minor issue--"it's fiction", after all, but also a sign of a weak writer.
i loved the princess when i read it--and that was when i was in 6th grade. there, the concept seemed kind of cute, because it had a distinct twist on fairy tale quality that almost made the imaginary country ok. but here, maybe because i'm of asian descent, it just seemed silly and almost offensive.
anyway, it's a fun read, in the end. it's just not something i would recommend as a "definitely read this" to anyone--but if you're a lori wick fan, go for it.
A True Fairy Tale with Christian Values.......2005-11-02
I absolutely LOVE this book. It was the first book I owned by Lori Wick and I have purchased many since then. I believe any one who reads this book and has just a slight amount of romance in them will melt after they read this book. It shows what true love is really about in a world that alters the meaning of the word. I can not say enough good things about this book but if you are looking for light reading that will bring a smile to your face this is definitely the book to read. Happy reading.
GREAT READ.......2005-10-24
I just finished this book a few days ago. It was wonderful!! Lori is so good at making the people fun and intersting. I wanted to be more like Lily. A must read for anyone who is already a fan of Lori Wick.
Beautiful book.......2005-07-24
I am 24 years old and Im not a real religous person, but I did read Bamboo and Lace. I have to say I fell in love with this book the first time I read it. The characters are beauifuly written. This book made me laugh and cry and I think anyone who read it would enjoy it. It may be a long book but every page is worth it. I have read it 4 times now and I fall in love with it every time I read it. Bravo and I look forward to reading more of her books.

Young and beautiful Clarissa Longleigh is visiting London for the first time. She is eager to meet Lord Marldon, the man to whom she is promised.
Customer Reviews:
deep erotic historical romantic suspense .......2006-12-29
In 1875, young and naive Clarissa Longleigh is coming to London to meet her fiancé Lord Alexander Marldon for the first time. She has dreamed of him ever since she learned of the arranged marriage. She pictures him as dark because her father Charles said so and handsome as her personal Prince Charming should be as he loves and honors her. However, she is a bit concerned that her country ways may embarrass a city sophisticate like her Alexander.
He fits are description perfectly as he is dark, handsome and sophisticated. However, she soon learns she may have wished for the wrong thing, as her Alex is also a sexual predator who is a sadist. Alex has plans for his beautiful fiancé to turn her into his sexual slave as he believes that the body is what binds people not some concept called love. Married, he begins his assault on her soul claiming that and her body belongs to him. When he learns she has befriended Gabriel the artist without his permission, he locks her away in the dungeon of his estate where he will educate her on forces much stronger and DARKER THAN LOVE starting with imprisoning the Italian painter who failed at his rescue attempt.
This is a deep erotic historical romantic suspense that stars a debauched aristocrat, his naive spouse, and the painter who loves her. The triangle is cleverly played so the audience can compare the different ways Alexander and Gabriel treat Clarissa; thus the heated XXX moments from bondage to straight sex and more are key elements to the story line. Readers who appreciate a well written torrid tale in which love battles sexual deviation will want to read this superior sub-genre Victorian.

Certainly is a great story ............2003-01-28
however I couldn't give it the full five stars since I felt it was somewhat lacking on the eroticism scale since I think the author tried to hard to push the envelope ...
The story evolves with a stock beautifull virgin, Clarissa, who has been betrothed to the dark and sinister (whatelse) Lord Maldon. Clarissa's recently married father takes off on his honeymoon with his young new wife, Alice, leaving poor, and let me tell you, frustrated but smouldering virgin, Clarissa behind, waiting to meet her, arranged marriage, husband ....
The worldly Lord Maldon, who, by the way, owns several houses of ill-repute arrives in London early to do a tatse test of his upcoming nuptials .... the fact that Clarissa has fallen in love with a young Italian artist forces Maldon to kidnapp our happless virgin and put her through the paces ....
Those readers that enjoy 'willing rapist' and some mild B&D will certainly rate the book at the 5 star maximum....
Lush, graphic sex in Victorian England ignites the reader........1999-04-18
This historical romance-type setting for erotica, provides many lush and graphic sexual scenes. The woman-dominated-by-man theme may initially be uncomfortable to modern, sexually liberated women but the intense sensuality of the encounters soon surpasses one's reservations. It offers a total diversion from real life with the plot resolving in a satisfying, sensual manner that is ultimately respectful of Clarissa, the woman controlled by her lusty appetite.

Couldn't Put It Down!.......2006-08-09
I read this book when it was first published in 1982, and am currently re-reading it. It is as enjoyable now as it was the first time around. While this is not great literature, it is great story-telling, and the details, backdrop, characters, etc., show Ms. Conran's first-hand knowledge of the upper crust lifestyle. They made a perfectly decent miniseries of this book (although Phoebe Cates, as Lili, did affect a strange Eastern European accent), but subsequent sequels fell flat. While a tad dated (some of the more shocking events seem almost commonplace now), reading this book is still a wonderful way to pass an afternoon.
out of this world book.......2006-04-16
this book is everything a young lady in her teens to 100s would love to dream over i was hooked from the first page i have also seen the film and screen play and would love to know were i can buy it from right now i want the film so bad if u can help let me know thanks
A 4 for Conran's Novel, and a 5 for the Movie........2006-02-01
Shirley Conran knows how to weave an exciting, glamorous story of the kind of life most women dream of but never get to experience. If she didn't, there wouldn't be the wonderful miniseries that it inspired, minus Kate, whose character was honestly not all that impressive. Yes, the novel goes into more detail, but the movie itself was a real gem, and I will admit that it's what turned me into an Arielle Dombasle fan 20 years ago when I was 19. It is impossible, after seeing the 5 1/2 hour miniseries not to see Pagan, Judy, Maxine, and Lily being portrayed by the actresses in the film once you read the book. I also liked the movie slightly better because it was a gorgeously lavish production, trashy, glamorous, tragic, and touching. Conran's classic novel beguiles like a loaded treasure chest, but the film adaptation sparkles and dazzles as if the lid was strewn wide open. I recommend both the book and the movie for full effect, but I really wish Ammy would supply us with the option of procuring the miniseries on DVD. I already know one definite buyer!
You can't stop reading it once you start!.......2005-11-17
This book is really good. If you have seen the TV series and you liked it, this book is a must. It contains more details than the TV series and even there are four friends instead of three, which makes this book more interesting. The author describes every episode in such a lively way that you can't help yourself feeling inside the story, and it is a mixture of mystery and romance. The ending is great and this book is far much better than the TV series. You must read it to fully understand what I mean.
MORE LIKE COTTON.......2005-01-10
Here's an example of a novel less impressive than its adaptation to the small screen. We still get Lili, the sexy superstar in search of her mother. We get the three school chums who stay united through thick and thin (or through "sick and sin" according to French Maxine), the men in their lives, the Valentine dance ball, and the birth of an illegitimate child. But what's added to this already rich cast of characters is a brochette of less than colorful ones, like Guy, the struggling designer who's storyline about stolen creations doesn't really go anywhere, and the introduction of a fourth friend named Kate who's presence only ends up being lukewarm. How many times can the reader endures her failed relationships with men without being ill at ease. Just a much too long distraction that lacks punch. Yet author Conran knows how to create effective moments. Lili's trapped-in-a-spiderweb-like lifestyle is a page-turning experience that adds depth to her thinly veiled character, and Abdullah's political marginality is a riveting take from the already established views of the Frenches and the Americans. But moments like those aren't a dime a dozen in this novel. What could have been a fun, unique experience of getting into the psyche of all the main characters already introduced on TV turned out to be an overlong, under-edited unimpressiveness that shouldn't have been. A shame.-----Martin Boucher

Book Description
Best-selling author Peggy J. Herring brings two of her most popular characters back to life in this sexy romance.
Dr. Maxine Weston and her lover Betina Abbott have been together for a very long time. The couple has kept their relationship fresh and new by enjoying sexual romps in the most unusual places. Their desire for each other is evident in everything they do.
When Betina begins experiencing bouts of depression, their world starts to crumble as antidepressants play havoc with Betina's libido. What will the couple do now that sex is no longer a part of their every day existence? Is their love strong enough to overcome the one missing thing that has bound them together all these years?
White Lace and Promises is a story of discovery and awakening as Maxine and Betina realize that the most important thing in their lives may not be sex after all
Customer Reviews:
A Hot, Intriguing and Thought Provoking Read!.......2006-09-15
Peggy J Herring Does 'It' Again--I could not put it down! Their neighbors 'Love' to watch and So Did I!) I was physically and emotionally drawn into every sexual adventure and display of love and caring from beginning to the very end. OB-Gyn, Dr. Maxine Weston and her lover Hair Salon Owner, Betina Abbott have a long term, caring and loving relationship which is filled with hot sexual adventures in some very interesting places.
Dr. Weston, a much sought after OB-Gyn has a thriving business partnership, but she always has time to fulfill Betina's and her own wild private and public sexual desires. Betina pampers Maxine whenever needed and is always ready for hot, steamy sex at a moments notice.
When an ugly reminder from Betina's past sends her into a bout with depression, the medication affects her sexual arousal and makes her begin to question her whole life and future. Maxine steps up and shows Betina and all of us how a loving and caring partner will stand by you in your time of need.
If I ever have a similar challenge, I hope to have a partner who will go through the fire with me and be this supportive.
A Wonderful Romance that shows you happily ever after.......2006-07-14
This is a unique romance. It starts with Maxine and Betina five years into their relationship. Their romance is as passionate as it was in the beginning and they are so comfortable in their life together that they both feel the happiest they have ever been. The author writes wonderfully romantic, passionate, erotic love scenes that always either move the story forward or are used to highlight the relationship of the characters. I readily enjoyed the playful locations Maxine takes Betina to have fun. Their caring for each other is readily apparent.
They are very unique individuals and they both bring different things to the relationship and yet they almost universally agree with the direction each one wants to take their life. I loved the story and the writing is terrific.
The humor is delicious and Betina's dialogue with her anatomy make Maxine and the reader shake their head and laugh out loud.
I especially liked reading about Maxine's career, she is a surgeon and OB-GYN.
This is the first romance I have read that deals with emotional depression. I liked that the author took the time (half the book) to show the couple before the onset of the depression so that you can see they have a solid base to recover to. Because it is a romance, the author does an admirable job in making everyone sympathetic and not allowing the story to turn morbidly dark. No one is a bad guy but neither are they perfect. The plot and the characters are so life like that I could perfectly imagine this story happening to people I know (well, maybe not the Ferris Wheel or the ambulance!).
As an added bonus the author has brought back the women from her novel 'Those Who Wait'. We get to revisit Elaine & Cheryl and Blanche & Phoebe.
I finally fell prey to the lesbian romance novel. .......2005-06-10
I've been toying with the notion of reading a lesbian romance for a couple years, but none of the book descriptions sounded interesting enough to hold my attention. I ran across this one and was intrigued since I too suffer from depression and understand the 'sexual dysfunction' effect of medications.
I have to say that Herring did a decent, maybe even good, job of describing the confusion of suffering from depression. Granted, we only see and hear Betina's suffering from her partner's point-of-view, Maxine. I believe a much better piece of general fiction could be written by focusing on Betina's point-of-view through the progression of this disease. The only other complaint I have is the excessive amount of surgical procedures Maxine performed, mostly hystorectomies.
These two, minor, complaints aside, I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed reading White Lace. There was a good balance between storyline and not-quite-gratuitous sex scenes. I'm willing to give lesbian romances a second shot. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a romance with a REAL storyline and real characters.
White lace and promises.......2005-06-10
White Lace and Promises, by Peggy J. Herring, is an excellent book. Not only does it talk about hot lesbian romance, Its a love story. I don't know about you but I grow tired of reading fantasy stories of a perfect world, where everything just falls in place. Peggy deals with real life and working through lifes problems together and working through what ever life throws at ya. my life I have spent dealing with depression and I loved the way her characters evolve and grow and stay together. In all of Peggy's book her characters end up being friends and I am living it with them. So if you want to read an excellent book full of tingling romance and one which deals with and works through problems with love......read White and promises. It was a must read for me. One in which I will read over and over.
Good Book With Issues.......2005-01-13
I usually like books written by Peggy Herring. This one was no exception. However, I felt a little let down by this story. The premise is that Maxine and Betina have been together for 5 years. They are exhibitionists and have mind-blowing sex in all kinds of strange places. One day Maxine comes home to realize her house is uncharacteristically messy (dirty dishes from the night before, extra laundry lying about, etc.), her power has been shut off, and her lover can't stop crying. Suddenly realizing her lover is clinically depressed, Maxine spends the majority of the book trying to get Betina to see a doctor, while she maintains her own ob-gyn practice and demanding patients. (I think Maxine performed more hysterectomies in the book than are performed annually in the US!)
I liked the characters and the idea of the story, but the delivery was choppy. The author took many liberties with the medical profession in general, but especially with regard to the treatment of Betina's depression (like a switch she was depressed, then she wasn't). Additionally, the end was abrupt and distracting. This wasn't a terrible book, but it was disappointing.
Book Description
Nobles bankrupted themselves in pursuit of it. Young convent girls spent 60 hours just to make a square inch of it. The Victorians revived it, and today it still hasn't lost its romance and allure.
The Love of Lace celebrates this enchanting fabric from its beginnings as crude open cutwork in the 14th century to the height of lace mania-when over a quarter of Europe's workers were employed as lace makers-to laces today and how to use and care for them. Gracing Catherine Calvert's richly informative text are Cynthia Hart's exquisite compositions mixing antique laces with fresh flowers, silver heirlooms, bibelots, a faded photograph.
Fine enough to be drawn through a wedding band or heavily worked for a dining table, lace is the highest expression of the needleworker's art, a poem in thread-and The Love of Lace is universal.

This book is a Keeper!
From the back of the book - With the excitement of new love and the remembrances of past lovers, Afterglow offers more well-crafted, imaginative, sexy stories of lesbian desire in the best-selling tradition of Karen Barber's Bushfire.
Not very interesting.......2002-01-15
While there are some arousing parts to some of these stories, most of them just aren't very interesting. Some of the stories don't make much sense and the characters are silly. If you're looking for some erotica, it's sprinkled here and there, but, if you're looking for good writing and engaging stories, forget this book.
Oops! Wrong book :(.......2000-08-02
I read the A+ review of Cris Newport's new erotica collection in The Brilliant Review. It said the name of the collection was Afterglow: Exotica. I quickly snapped up this book only to find it wasn't the right one -- I was looking for "1001 Nights: Exotica." I read Afterglow, though, and found it did not stand up to my expectations. Many of the stories seemed cliched. I wanted something "crackling with energy" (a quote from TBR) but Afterglow fell a little short of crackle.
A good start.......2000-03-26
For those new to the wonderful world of Lesbian Erotica (i capitalize this because it is so important), this is a good beginning. From the first breathless pages to the last, it covers a lot of the wonderful territory that is lesbian love and sex. I just hope the rest of the world can accept this sort of sexuality as just as marvelous, hot, wild, amazing, and lovely as socially accepted heterosexuality. I think this book would certainly help the world to move in that direction. PS: keep this on your nightstand for sure! it's great for getting last-minute ideas before you climb into bed with your sweetie. :)
An insult to the gender of women.......1999-03-30
I found this book to be crude with the use of very vulgar terms. I did not find it to be erotic with the use of these terms. The writers need to discuss feelings and emotions rather than vulgar terminology of the female body. A woman's body is beautiful and should be cherished.
