4 out of 5 stars Overall a Good Purcahse.......2002-05-11

Wasn't as extensive as I would have hoped, I might have been expecting too much, and didn't contain alot of jars available on the market. But what it did contain was very good and I found very useful.

2 out of 5 stars Collector's Encyclopedia of Cookie Jars, Book III.......2001-10-03

This book was not helpful at all. I have many older McCoy cookie jars and none of them were listed. This book mainly has new cookie jars listed. So if you are looking for a price guide for older jars this is not the book.

5 out of 5 stars Roerig's Cookie Jar Book III Review.......2001-09-11

Found this extremely helpful, especially the photographs. I was thankful for pricing guidance that the author also included. Information of the backgrounds of the manufacturers was interesting but a found a few that were too brief to nothing at all. When selling these jars it is always good to be able to pass on that type of information to the buyer. History was not covered in this book as this was the 3rd book covering the subject. I found this to be a very valuable reference tool to have available.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Library Volume Picturing Cookie Jar Collectibles.......2000-04-09

This is the 3rd edition of the popular book, featuring more than 1,800 large, sharp full color photos in its 360 pages. No repeats from the prior editions. There is not much in the way of background information, but loads of beautiful pictures, descriptions and prices. A complete index makes it easy to find the jars you're interested in. If you like to look at cookie jars, you'll love this picture encyclopedia.

5 out of 5 stars Need to know information from cover to cover............1999-12-03

The Enyclopedia is well written in an easy to read and understand format.....Starting with the Intro and Hints to collectors, the authors relay their extensive knowledge to the reader...including their views on what to collect and how to collect in the world of cookie jars.....The full color photos of the jars are very helpful in identifying your next find when you go cookie jarrin' at the weekend flea market....In fact, I have all three books of the Collector's Encyclopedia of Cookie Jars.....I enjoy these books a great deal and they make great gifts for the collector in your family.

Book Description

A beautiful companion to Book I, this expanded format contains over 650 full-color photos of thousands of cookie jars. With informative descriptions, dates, sizes, and marks. 2000 values. REVIEW: This book was inspired by a visit to the Homer Laughlin Factory in Newell, West Virginia, by the author. For the casual collector of Homer Laughlin China, this book will show the evolution of the Homer Laughlin designs throughout the years. For the serious collector and dealer, this book is a great reference manual which can assist in the identification of different shapes and decorative patterns. It especially assists in differentiating between shapes which closely resemble one another.

3 out of 5 stars An Illustrated Value Guide to Cookie Jars by E. Westfall.......2001-03-01

This book is a nice size and weight to carry around. However, I am bothered by the way the cookie jars are valued. The author states that she lists "what I have paid for jars or seen on them" but never mentions the dates or places spotted or purchased! There are more accurate ways to measure the selling prices of such collectibles. Of course, an object is only really worth what one is willing to pay. It's a handy book and cheap, but I would just say beware that it is very inexpertly written. In my humble opinion!

    Book Description

With more than 2,000 cookie jars illustrated in full color, this is the most complete book on the subject ever published. That helps explain the popularity of this encyclopedia, now in its fifth edition. It also contains extensive research, written by America's foremost authority, making it the definitive reference. The book is organized by both subject and by artists and companies, including the popular McCoy, American Bisque, Hull, and many others. Additionally, there is information on distributors, importers, and retailers, along with guidelines to condition, counterfeits, and production techniques. Additionally, an extensive index and current market values make this edition a must-have for collectors and dealers.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Values Have Plummeted !.......2007-07-10

As of July 2007 cookie jar values have plummeted on Ebay. I would estimate people are willing to pay 50 % or less than in 1999 or 2000. The cookie jar collecting bubble burst. Examples-- A Hull Barefoot Boy did go for 200 easily. One recently started at 79 dollars and received no bids. A Shawnee Smily or Winnie dressed up in Shamrock or Chysanthemums (sic) etc was about 200-225 in 2000. I got each for about 100 DOLLARS this summer.
If you like cookie jars-- the time to buy is now. For folks that bought jars in the late 90s, your collection is worth 50-60% less.
Point-- this book's values are way out of date and using them will result in your paying way too much. Better to go on Ebay and watch for awhile or look at what jars you want went for recently via Searching History.
The pics are great-- but as i said in late 1999, the coverage is not comprehensive of all makers-- focusing mainly on McCoy and American Bisque

5 out of 5 stars Cookie Jar Guide.......2006-11-10

This book helps price cookie jars before you buy, plus it gives you ideas on what you would like in your collection. Well worth the price of the book.

5 out of 5 stars For collectors and curiosity seekers.......2004-01-16

Now in its fourth edition, The Complete Cookie Jar Book by Mike Schneider is a 312-page catalogue and price guide of collectible and antique cookie jars. Filled from cover-to-cover with full color photographs illustrating each of the more than 2000 cookie jars featured, The Complete Cookie Jar Book is a superbly organized, expertly informative, and inherently fascinating resource for collectors and curiosity seekers with an interest in this traditional piece of kitchenware.

5 out of 5 stars Mike Schneider Educates Cookie Jar Collectors.......2000-08-29

Mike Schneider has provided an invaluable service to cookie jar collectors everywhere. Mike was the first author to include the dimensions of the cookie jars and to shoot the cookie jars from the top of the finial. With all of the reproductions out there today, it is hard for beginning collectors to know which cookie jars are original and which ones are reproduction.

Mike's innovative approach to photographing the cookie jars from the top of the finial gives collectors a whole new perspective on what the cookie jars look like and I think this is important.

Other authors of collectibles books owe Mike a debt of gratitude. His detailed descriptions of cookie jars, including their dimensions, make his cookie jar book the standard by which all collectibles books should be written. I find that many authors miss the small details when it comes to writing about their collectible of choice. Information pertaining to the year of production and the dimensions, along with the color variations it was produced in, are the key to educating collectors. Mike Schneider delivers all this and more in his book.

This is one book that no serious cookie jar collector should be without.

3 out of 5 stars Excellant but not Complete.......1999-11-23

The book is excellant on coverage of McCoy and American Bisque. However it is weak on several makers-- Sierra Vista, Metlox, Lefton etc. The pics are outstanding. I find the values assigned to be too high generally. It is a beautiful book, but there are more comprehensive books out there.

    Book Description

Collectors everywhere know that cookie jars, both old and new, are among the hottest items sought after today and are bringing top dollar at antique shops, flea markets, and on eBay. With this in mind and due to the tremendous success of their three-volume series, Collectors Encyclopedia of Cookie Jars, Fred and Joyce Roerig were prompted to produce The Ultimate Collectors Encyclopedia of Cookie Jars. This book is an overview of their first three volumes, now out of print, with exciting new finds and additions. As age does not determine collectibility, some current jars have been added. This information enhances that of the tried and true jars of old. More than 1,200 photographs are included in this deluxe volume. Companies featured include Brayton Laguna, Brush-McCoy, Disney, Metlox, Shawnee, Treasure Craft, McCoy, Twin Winton, and many more. Informative text, current values, color photographs, and a handy index make this a great buy for cookie jar collectors everywhere.

I only wanted the book to identify and price an old cookie jar I have, so I really can't give much of a review, but I was dissapointed that the book didn't have more info (only the price) on my cookie jar.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Cookie Jarrin'.......2007-01-06

The "Ultimate Collector's Encyclopedia of Cookie Jars" by the publishers of the old Cookie Jarrin' Newsletter, Fred & Joyce Roerig, I found a pure pleasure to peruse for weeks. It displays, in some of the finest photography of all the cookie jar books, many of the cookie jar classics. Along with smile fetching standbys (ABC Coffee Pot, McCoy Cookie Cabin, Twin Winton Sheriff Bear, etc.) are a feast of the best jars from the best producers.
From American Bisque are the "Flashers", Little Audrey, Herman & Katnip, Baby Heuy, along with Umbrella Kids, Davy Crockett ((both) and Mohawk Indian (Little Mo). Brayton's Goose Woman, Maid and Ring Master are there. There's a picture of the old Brush Pottery Building along with their rarest including: Hillbilly Frog, Little Red Riding Hood, Hobby Horse and Puppy Police. On to California Originals there's their fun standards (Scarecrow, Little Red Riding Hood, Rabbit on a Stump, etc.) to their greats such as Snow White, Pinocchio(s), Bambi and the full color Woody Woodpecker. The section on McCoy is always fun with the Roerigs and this one does not disappoint. It begins with a full page Tony Veller and goes on to charm us with Two Kittens in Low Basket, Multicolored Leprechaun, Frosted Christmas Tree, Hillbilly Bear, Cookie Tug, Drum Majorette, two varieties of the Train Engine with Smoke, and a smorgasbord of their most popular jars. Again with Metlox there's the best of their regulars and a good mix of their "hard to find" jars including Ferdinand Calf, Flamingo, Mammy Scrub Woman, and Little Red Riding Hood. The Twin Winton chapter displays the entire Collector's Series, Shaggy Dog, and a good selection of their standbys. Conspicuously absent is any description of the Twin Winton Company. There's actually more dialogue on Don Winton in the Hirsh section than there is under Twin Winton. Treasure Craft's section focuses on their U.S.A. made jars with the exception of three jars made in Mexico. Even so, most of my Treasure Craft favorites are included.
Among others there fun sections on Dorrane of California, Abingdon, L.A. Pottery, Cardinal, Maurice of California, Hull (including thier impossibly rare Little Boy Blue), Maddux, Roseville, Helen Hutula, RRP, Sierra Vista, NAC, Regal China and Shawnee. Among current producers/importers there's Clay Art, Vandor, Enesco, Fitz & Floyd (although their Table of Contents says Fritz & Floyd), and Lefton. Surprisingly missing here are Vandor and Warner Brothers. The "Unknown/Miscellaneous" section is only 2 pages long. Also absent are any of the studio producers (J.D. James, Corl's Kilns, The New Rose Collection, Happy Memories, Austin Curtis, Star Jars, McMe, etc.).
To cover what's missing in the book would require several more pages. But the selection of cookie jars is what it is; the Roerig's opinion of what are the ultimate cookie jars and I enjoyed every page. There are updated prices that are as good as I've seen. Overall the jars covered are done so well that it's truly agonizing that the great producers are gone (McCoy, ABC, Twin Winton, Metlox, and on and on).
I give the book my highest rating within the scope of what it strove to achieve. The jars included and the jars left out are a study in what the Roerigs are about. Always an interesting journey.

4 out of 5 stars Cookie Jar Collector Guide.......2006-11-15

Great book for the cookie jar collector. The book will help you place a value when getting ready to purchase a cookie jar for your collection.

    1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2006-01-22

This fourth book by the author is very disappointing. Is a re-hash of the older books with no new jars featured. The newer manufacturers are completely ignored. The jars featured in this book have already been featured in the other 3 books. Price values seem low and anemic.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Who Took the Cookies From the Cookie Jar?.......2004-12-12

I am a kindergarten teacher and LOVE this book. My students enjoy the repetition of the phrases, "Who me, couldn't be!" and "Mmm... Oh!... Now I know..." as on each page skunk thinks he has solved the mystery of the missing cookies. Clever clues on each page help students predict which friend of skunk will appear on the next page. The happy ending, with all the friends sharing the cookies, brings the story to a warm conclusion. The illustrations are colorful and large, with limited text on each page, perfect for younger children.

I use this book early in the school year to help the students learn each others names. I hide a small baggie of cookies in a child's lap. Students then have to guess who has the cookies by saying, "Mary took the cookies from the cookie jar." Mary responds, "Who me, couldn't be!" and guesses another child. When the cookies are discovered, we rehide them. Finally, we get to enjoy our cookie snack. I also adapt the activity for use throughout the year, with each child being an alphabet letter, an alphabet sound, a number or a site word. For example, "14 took the cookie from the cookie jar." "Who me, couldn't be!" "17 took the cookie from the cookie jar." and so on.

My students truly enjoy experiencing this story all year long. I highly recommend it for your students or your child.

5 out of 5 stars Each time you read this book, it's fresh and exciting........2004-05-12

I bought "Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar" for my two-and-a-half-year-old niece. I was visiting during bath time the other day, when my sister said: "Come here little mouse. Let me wipe your face." My nieces response was: "Please don't tease. I eat cheese."

I had no idea what my neice was talking about until my sister explained that that is what the mouse says from the book. Infact, my niece has the entire book memorized. She loves it!

When we read "Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar" later that same night, my niece proudly explained how if you look at the page you can tell who's coming next, how Mommy taught her that. She reads this book over and over. And each time she reads it, it's like discovering this secret of who is coming next for the first time, fresh and exciting.

I would recommend this book to anyone with a todler or young child. It's full of a love for animlals, as well as the sense of wonder and curiosity that makes this book and young children so magical.

5 out of 5 stars My kids loved this book.......2003-10-25

My husband read this book to my kids and it was an instant success with all three of my children. They started repeating the rhyme and giggling so loudly. They had a great time with it.

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Hit!.......2000-11-05

This book was an instant hit in our house. My daughter enjoys having it read to her as well as participating in the rhymes herself. We also like going through each page to solve the mystery behind who's on the next page. Beautifully illustrated and lots of fun for both parent and child.

    5 out of 5 stars An interactive reading/playing/learning experience.......2000-11-02

Fresh new life infuses this familiar children's playground song/chant/rhyme. As Skunk puzzles out the mystery of the missing cookies with help from his animal friends, children are introduced to the landscape of the southwestern desert, as well as many of its animal inhabitants. This presents a fun opportunity for gentle lessons in science. And for teachers/parents looking for patterned books to nudge reading skills along, this fits the bill with its rhyme and repetition. The large, colorful pictures portray animals that are endearing but not cutesy. Bright and bouncy, this is just the kind of book that works well with lap sharing for very young children but just as easily lends itself to sharing with a group. Kids will be developing their sleuthing skills as they use clues in the pictures to predict which animal did steal the cookies. They'll be having so much FUN that you'll have to steal the book back from them to do anything else!

    Book Description

With their origins dating back to 18th Century British biscuit

jars, American-made cookie jars are fun, frivolous and

fabulously collectible. Cookie jars as we know them today were

only popularized in the U.S. around the time of the Great

Depression. Today, stoneware cookie jars made by Brush, Hull,

McCoy and others are highly prized by collectors.

Featuring thousands of cookie jars by all the major

manufacturers, valued and captured in full color, Warman?s

Vintage Cookie Jars is the most complete volume available for

collectors. The book includes history, current values,

information on fakes and reproductions, marks and much

more. Presenting a visual and textual history of this unique

kitchen art form, this book will prove to be as wonderful as

the treats pulled from the cookie jars themselves.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing and limited.......2007-10-04

I am a collector with most of the relevant guides. As this was a new one, which I felt was long overdue, I was very excited. However, this book falls far short. First, the author obviously accessed a few collections, and focused on those without seeking out many other jars, some more widely available, to include. Second, it seems to have taken the word of the owners of those collections as to current cookie jar values. You can take a look at Ebay to know the prices in this book aren't at all realistic. Third, there is no index, so if you don't already have an idea as to what a jar is, then you are out of luck. The best thing about this book is good photos.

I'd still go with the Schneider book or the Roerig trilogy.

I am relatively new to collecting cookie jars and felt like I have all the books I can find about the topics. Many of them were published in the 1980's or the 1990's and so the price guides are off by quite a bit. This guide is Awesome! It has wonderful clear pictures, the current price, when to look for reproductions on a certain one, as well as all sorts of other helpful details. It is alphabetically organized and well written. By far the best book I have. I highly recommend to all. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Sure to be one of your favorite cookie recipe books.......2003-11-18

"Cookie Jar Magic" is actually a compilation of two of Lia Roessner Wilson's cookie cookbooks and an additional section with cookie cutter recipes. Now you can get two of her best cookie related books in one volume. The first section contains the book "Cookie Dough Secrets: 1 Basic Dough for 70 Scrumptious Cookie Recipes", the second is "The Cookie Cutter Cookbook", and the third is "Gifts for the Cookie Jar: Cookie Recipes for Ingredients in a Jar". The first and third sections are books that have been reviewed before and those reviews are included below. This cookie cookbook is a recommended read and a good source of just about anything you might want to do with cookie recipes from creating gift jars to creating a wide variety of tasty treats.

Part I - Cookie Dough Secrets: 1 Basic Dough for 70 Scrumptious Cookie Recipes.
"Cookie Dough Secrets" is exactly what the title promises. First is a recipe for basic cookie dough. Master this dough and you can appear to be a cooking baking genius. Just add a few ingredients to the already prepared dough and you have pfeffernuesse (one of my favorites), add a couple of different ingredients and you have crispy pecan thins, different ingredients and you get spicy cinnamon sugar twists, orange slices, nutty lemon rounds, pineapple pinwheels, or even chocolate peanut butter sandwich cookies. Totally different flavors, totally different cookies, same basic recipe; it's amazing the variety of cookies a good baker can create with simple additions from a single recipe. Now with Lia Wilson's book you too can create almost any kind of cookie from this same basic recipe.

Part II - The Cookie Cutter Cookbook.
This section contains fifteen pages of recipes that are designed to work well with traditional cookie cutters. There are various recipes and decoration suggestions. The recipes include some unusual chocolate cookie recipes as well as traditional sugar cookies, gingerbread man, and other recipes.

Part III - Gifts for the Cookie Jar: Cookie Recipes for Ingredients in a Jar.
When you have an urge for cookies the easiest way to satisfy it is to grab a pack at the store. Of course, they taste better if you get a roll of cookie dough and bake them. Then again they taste even better if you get all the ingredients and actually make them from scratch, but who has time for that? Wouldn't it be great if you could just grab a box or jar with all the dry ingredients already measured so all you had to do is pour it into a bowl, add the egg and butter, mix and bake? "Gifts for the Cookie Jar" is a collection of cookie recipes that are appropriate for just this sort of gift. Each recipe has complete instructions for the correct measurement of the ingredients, the size of the jar needed and an appropriate layering order so you end up with an attractive and unique gift. After layering the ingredients into the jar, you add a decorative lid, and a small tag with the baking instructions (tags with the instructions are included in the book). Decorative and yet practical, all the gift recipient has to do is take the lid off, pour the ingredients into a mixing bowl, add the appropriate egg, butter, vanilla, or other perishable ingredient, mix and bake. Quick, easy, no searching for the recipe, no searching for ingredients, no quick trip to the store for a forgotten ingredient, and delicious homemade cookies; it's the perfect gift to give or keep available for yourself for that day when you want fresh cookies without the hassle.

Recipes include oatmeal-raisin cookies, orange sugar cookies, date and walnut cookies, malted milk crunchies, butterscotch snaps, toffee chocolate chippers, and butter pecan delights. These are really good recipes and an absolutely delightful idea.

With both of her best cookie books in a single volume plus the added section on cookie cutter recipes this volume is very convenient to use. Each of the two books reviewed before had received a "highly recommended" rating on their own. Now together in one book the only rating I can possibly give it is very highly recommended for anyone who enjoys cookies as a treat or as a gift.

4 out of 5 stars My opinion only!!.......2005-04-20

Am well pleased with this book but I would like to see a 2005 updated version. Some prices are a little too high in regards to value but it helps a collector to keep a proper perspective of what to pay and what not to pay for a jar. I also appreciate the "mark" to look for on the jar to help in making sure the jar is a "fake" or the real thing!

5 out of 5 stars THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF COOKIE JARS.......2004-10-04

I FOUND THIS COOKIE JAR BOOK TO BE THE BEST BOOK OUT THERE ON JARS. THE VALUES ARE A BIT HIGH BUT THEN AGAIN I AM WAITING FOR THEM TO UPDATE THE BOOK WITH TODAYS VALUES. WHEN THE BOOK WAS WRTTEN COOKIE JARS WERE AT A HIGH DOLLAR VALUE. THE CROSS REFERENCING AND THE PICTURES ARE EXCELLENT AND THE BOOK DESERVES A AAA+++ FROM ME!

4 out of 5 stars Could be better, but still one of the best.......2003-05-10

Pros: comprehensive, excellent cross-referenced organization (easy to find jar when you don't know maker), notes what mark should say on jar
Cons: values are too high, photography is good on some but on average it's not great -- too much contrast so difficult to see detail (looks like flash photography rather than lighted) and color is biased towards yellow, would be nice to have a measurements on all pieces

5 out of 5 stars Best Cross Reference.......2003-04-18

Best Cross reference book out there..... We have been collectors for years and have all the books there are concerning Cookie Jars. And every edtion... Supnicks book is chalk full of pictures.... And the cross reference is wonderful....... I noticed when reading the other reviews some people don't have my same thoughts... I can't help but wonder if these are other authors who wish they had taken the time to do the cross ref. .. As far as the prices being higher in there book,,, I do notice that,, but I also notice that in other cookie jar books that are SO CALLED Revised prices,,,,,, Are not well researched.. Just putting out the same book and raising the prices of a few jars...
Supnicks Book is the beat one out there............... More photos then any other..
I felt I needed to write this as I notice some reviews were WRONG,, stating items not identified correctly... Well, anyone who is a Cookie Jar collector KNOWS some jars have questions as to who made them,, and everyone has their own thoughts.. Again leading me to believe there might be a few jealous authors out there.. GET THIS BOOK.. It will be your Bible...........

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful World of Cookie Jars.......1999-12-19

Excellent Reference Book with one of the largest picture listings that I have found. It has helped me MANY times in my search for information on cookie jars that I have purchased. Every collector of Cookie Jars ABSOLUTELY must have one of these books! You will not regret it!

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2007-04-10

A friend of mine had this book, and it looked so darling, I just had to hunt down a copy! It's a cute story, and even one that you don't mind reading repeatedly, and my 10 month old daughter even loves to turn to pages and feel the little cookies! This is one book I am looking forward to reading with her for a long time, as she learns to understand the story and count the cookies!

5 out of 5 stars great counting, rhyming, sturdy book.......2007-03-09

This is not the mini version of the book, the reviewer before me has their review on the wrong book. This is the full version of the book.
great rhyming, counting, sturdy book for young children and children up to the age of 5 or 6. My 5 year old is learning to read and likes to point out words he knows in this book. The raised up rubbery cookies go form 10 down to 1, and the great surprise is dad took all the cookies and at the end shares a great big cookie with the whole family and some animals that also get involved in the mystery.

1 out of 5 stars mini? this is the mini of the mini.......2007-02-12

This is so mini edition, that they should have written the word 'mini' in smaller print. I can't even read the print. I'm very disappointed.
I thought this would only have fewer pages but not mini in size.
I wish the description explained that it was mini in dimensions length x width, and not leaving for one to possibly assume that it was only with less pages, but in the regular dimenstions a book would be.
Too much money for what I received.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-09-20

My daughter, 20 months, picked this book out herself at the bookstore. She loves counting the cookies (well, she loves when I count the cookies). She also loves saying the names of the different animals who "stole the cookie". The illustrations are easy for her to follow and on the last page, when everyone has to share the cookie, she loves pointing at each of the animals and saying who they are. We read this book first thing in the morning, last thing at night and sometimes multiple times in the middle. It's been 3 weeks of this and I'm not even tired of it yet.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for the whole family.......2006-05-22

This book is loved by our whole family. The illustrations are clever and delightful, while the repeating rhyme is catchy, yet not annoying. My six year old enjoys reading the book to us and my 18 month old loves looking at the pictures and pressing the "cookies" as though they are buttons. Most importantly, the book ends on a high note about sharing.
