    Book Description

This massive biographical dictionary offers the most thorough study of a group of early American craftsmen published to date. It contains biographies of 296 silversmiths and jewelers who worked in Massachusetts prior to the American Revolution, records of more than 6000 examples of their work, and illustrations of 424 of their marks. It completes and amplifies research undertaken at Yale since the 1930s when John Marshall Phillips (1905 - 53), the leading scholar of American silver of his generation, acquired the research notes of Francis Hill Bigelow (1859 - 1933), a pioneer in the field.

There are brief biographical notes on 93 craftsmen in allied trades, including watchmakers, clockmakers, and engravers, and a section on individuals previously misidentified as Massachusetts silversmiths, as well as essays on silversmiths and their tools, Boston silversmithing and jewelrymaking trades, and other Massachusetts silversmiths. A glossary of terms relating to tools and craft techniques and 193 additional illustrations complete the book.

4 out of 5 stars Kovels New Dictionary of Marks.......2007-10-12

This is a good resource book. It has it's limitations, but I use it almost daily. I look up alot of ceramics marks, and I find the large majority of them in this Kovels book. It is great if you are looking for a specific makers mark, or decoratoras mark. The limitation is that there is no way to comprehensively view all marks from one particular maker. If you have a few treasures that you want to accurately identify, then it is very good. Don't get me wrong, I haven't found every mark I look for. But I haven't found a Marks reference that I do. This book provides a good clean and easy format to locate the mark I need, and quickly.

Also, if you are looking for back ground info on the company, this isn't the book for you. While the Kovel's do an excellent job of showing literal thousands of easy to find marks, thats all they show. All in all a highly recommended resource. Any serious ceramics collector, dealer, or dedicated flea market/yard saler should have a copy.

2 out of 5 stars Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks Pottery & Porcelain 1850 to the Present.......2007-02-11

I haven't been happy with this book since I purchased it. Haven't found one mark from any of the pottery or china I have from this book. Only one or maybe two examples of the companies which made the pottery but not the marks. For example I can't even find the simple "Anchor" from Anchor Hawking Co.(There are plenty of other anchors). I have a very nice Blue "Old Fashion"/juice glass fron A.H. but I have never seen one in blue. Looked it up and could not find MARK in this book. I was very surprised. I've been thinking about purchasing the Second Edition of Kovels' book, but been holding back... Can anyone tell me if it is better or if it's just me, I hope..Mary, techmom@usamedia.tv (No Solicitors Please! Only those wanting to talk about this book please reply. NO SPAMMERS!!)

4 out of 5 stars Good reference book.......2007-02-03

Marks on pottery have always been of interest to me. Some are obvious and well-known and others obscure. Couldn't find all the marks I was looking for. Still a good book to have.

    4 out of 5 stars Great reference............2007-01-10

This book has been a great reference for finding pottery marks. This volume does not hold a list of all markings ever used, but it comes closer than any others I have used. My only complaint of this book is that it does not group multiple marks that a particular potter may have used over the years. Instead it groups them by design not by maker.
Still this is the most comprehensive markins book I have found in an affordable price range. Well worth the investment.

      Book Description

Art flourished in France to an exciting and unprecedented degree in the 19th century. Sculpture was a part of this fantastic explosion of creative genius with such artistic giants as Rodin, Barye, d'Angers and Carpeaux. At the same time technological advances in the bronze industry transformed sculpture from an art form for public plazas and the rich to art for living rooms and vestibules of even the middle class. The result has been an abundant supply of nineteenth century French bronzes-some common reproductions, and some extremely valuable limited editions. In this important reference, you can discover a wealth of information. This extraordinary volume contains a complete encyclopedia of almost 750 French artists, with biographies, listings of works (along with size and foundry when known), museum pieces in France and elsewhere, and recent sales. It also includes an overview of 19th century bronze sculpture, the foundries that cast the bronzes, and methods used to cast works. 1000 photographs capture the beauty of the pieces and help identify these and similar works.

      5 out of 5 stars an inquirer's book.......2007-01-30

This book was perfect for my parents who like to know all they can about the antiques they have. This book is well illustrated and thorough. Of all the bronze books they ahve recently aquired, this one is their favorite. They wanted the book for the Mene and Barye bronze information in particular and were pleased to find most of their pieces in the book. I would recommend this book for those wanting to know about thier bronzes and the people behind them. ( My parents love it.)

4 out of 5 stars Reference Work for Classical Bronzes.......2007-01-21

This publication will be of interest to 2 groups of people. Firstly collectors of Bronze figures of the classical period will be able to use this as a reference for studying artists which thewy may encounter in their antique hunting. The book is large and imrpessive and handsomely presented with colour and B & W photographs.
For the second group (lovers of quality books) this one is very impressive and is of the type that would make a great coffee table book.
I am in both categories and will use this publication for both avid collecting and just as a good read.

        Book Description

Completely different from any other book of marks ever published, this dictionary provides the quickest way to identify American, English, and European porcelain. Once a piece is identified, research and experience (the color, texture, weight, and general "feel") tell the rest of the story.

The unique index of 5,000 marks, listed by prominent features and with a complete cross-reference, shows at a glancegeographical location of mark, factory or family name of manufacturer, type of ware, method of producing the mark on the object,  color of the mark, and  date when the mark was used.

The authors have included a foreword, bibliography, index of manufacturers, and a reliable guide to the often misunderstood marks of Delft, Sevres, and England 1842-1883.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book........2007-03-09

Exactly what I was expecting. A bit difficult to understand at first, but once you understand the layout it really makes it easy to use for reference.

4 out of 5 stars Kovels' Dictionary of Marks -- Pottery And Porcelain : 1650 to 1850 (Kovel's Dictionary of Marks).......2006-03-10

Overall it is helpful. I am really just getting into this, so it is great to have something I can refer to to get an idea of where the item I have comes from.

4 out of 5 stars A very good resource for the collector.......2000-03-19

As with the Kovels other books, this reference is very exhaustive and complete. There are, perhaps, some mistakes, but given the volume of information here that is to be expected. I find I reach for this book first when I'm trying to identify a piece of this age group, and usually find what I'm looking for here. Easy to travel with, from antique shop to auction. A good buy.

2 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes.......1999-11-22

Rather coplete book but-alas-full of mistakes in entries concerning German and Austrian porcelain.Take for example the Meissen porcelain:the authors put together in one large pile Meissen proper,Thieme factory,Fr.Hirsch,Helena Wolfsohn and other factories, though these are absolutely different things. The authors should make a bit of research before starting the project:What amazes me is that this is the 46th edition of the book and nobody ever corrected those mistakes.

5 out of 5 stars An icon in this field. Excellent & portable quick reference........1998-10-16

Good research, accurate information, and voluminous (if not exhaustive) representation of marks. Brief yet succinct information identifying maker, circa date and geographical location are offered with marks. Don't expect a good read or scholarly discourse. Small and light; easy to take on the road.

        5 out of 5 stars Really Useful.......2007-05-20

I believe the book is very complete, not only because of the word definitions, but also because of the pictures which show how costumes were in each fashion trend and in which we can see diferences between time an place. I have just recieved the book and that is the impresion I have from a quick look.

1 out of 5 stars not worth it.......2007-05-14

This text was required for my costume history course. I found it lacking -- many definitions do not have images to illustrate them, making learning difficult. Definitions are not very descriptive: if you're looking for a comprehensive fashion dictionary, this isn't it.

        5 out of 5 stars a great reference item!.......2006-07-08

I just received my copy today, and I am thrilled with it. It is exactly what I was hoping for, a useful, easy to pick up (it's lightweight and not so large that it's a difficult reference), simple to use reference material for our costume shop. Includes broader headings (sportswear), as well as specifics, the pictures are great (although more would be helpful), and there are fabric descriptions as well. Highly recommended as a reference, do not purchase as a reading book. Perfect for a work setting.

4 out of 5 stars A Dictionary of Costume and Fashion.......2006-02-28

I found this book to be rather comprehensive in terminology and volume of terms. I would have liked to have seen some dates for items, at least approximately. Eg: It is important to know when the zipper was invented in order to make a historically correct dress. But all in all the book has been helpful with definitions and illustrations.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference.......2003-07-11

The previous reviewer, Michelle Willingham, does not seem familiar with the use of a dictionary. It is not intended to be read, but consulted when information is needed.

This is an excellent reference work, a classic in its field.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a useable book on Orientals.......2003-02-06

Stone does not make the assumption, as so many writers about Oriental rugs do, that he knows what the reader wants. Instead, he provides an exhaustive, impartial spectrum of places, conditions, qualities, methods, and types affiliated with Oriental rugs, from earliest known times to the present. Stone manages to keep his work from being dull by interlarding it with astringent observations and keeping his entries brutally essential. Whoever did the layout of this work deserves kudos, too-- it is easy to access, each entry is set off from the others so as to be memorable to those of us who are visual, and there is generous, attractive use of clearly-labeled graphics. I genuinely appreciate this matrix-like, non-linear expert treatment of Oriental rugs, and find myself reading it up like a novel. The only thing I have found lacking so far is an entry on arbash.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK!.......1998-06-13

In the rug world there is almost a constant competition of scholarship. Very rarely does one person so dominate his field as to be the indisputable authority. One of those rare exceptions is Peter Stone. One rug restoration expert told me that there will never be another major book on rug repair in my life time because "Oriental Carpet Repair" by Peter Stone says it all. Stone's new book the "Oriental Rug Lexicon" may well exceed "Oriental Carpet Repair" as a scholarly triumph. If you are at all serious about collecting or if your rugs are anything more than floor coverings to you, you need this book.

The Definative Guide To Rugs, Carpets, and Trappings What Stone has done is to make one large dictionary of rug terms. He has identified and defined them in an interesting and informative manner. As soon as I received the Lexicon I decided to put it to use. The first job was to decipher a page of notes I had made on dyes and dye sources used in oriental carpets that someone had given me. To have a source where I can double check the difference between a flavenol and a luteolin is invaluable. Other questions are solved just as easily such as what is a Medici Mamaluk versus a regular Mamaluk. Rug books have so many alternate spellings that it is nice to have a source that confirms that a Khorjin, Kharjin, Khordjin, and a Khurdzhin, are all the same thing. The book is designed like a dictionary and it is easy to look up individual words. It is not designed to be read cover to cover but as I spot-checked the definitions I found some thing interesting and fun on virtually every page. As long as I am mentioning spot-checking let me say that I spotted no errors. If, indeed, there are no errors, inaccuracies or mistakes, I will be astounded. There is to be found a wealth of rug terms with all the common alternative spellings including some that I have not encountered until now. All in all, it is an amazing resource.

The layout of the book is superb. It is packed with informati! on without being crowded. There are many more color pictures than I would have expected with a book of this type and there is an abundance of helpful sketches and line art to illustrate and illuminate Stone's points. Just this week a good friend who has a world class rug collection told me I "have" to buy three books if I want to keep up with things. The total for all three is over $1000 US. I mention this only to make the point that at a list price of $29.95 (US currency for softcover edition, $60 for hardcover edition) Stone's book is about as close to free we are likely to see for a serious rug book. Let me sum up my opinion in just three words: BUY THIS BOOK!

Furniture, when you really stop to think about it, has a surprisingly small number of uses: for sitting or lying on, for storing things in, and to provide flat surfaces on which to dine, write, or perform other tasks. Nonetheless, furniture designers throughout history have drawn on a seemingly endless supply of creativity to give expression to contemporary sensibilities through the design of these ubiquitous objects. This second edition of Charles Boyce's exhaustive Dictionary of Furniture chronicles artistic and cultural currents of past and present, using changing furniture as a looking glass through which to learn about the time in which it was made.

Boyce shares amusing and fascinating anecdotes illustrating the links between furniture design and the larger world. Louis XIV of France, for instance, required French aristocrats to imitate the extravagantly luxurious architecture and furnishings of Versailles in order to control their wealth. In China, chairs with names like "chair of the old man who has been drinking" or "chair like a hanging lantern shaped like a chair" enjoyed popularity throughout the Song and Ming dynasties.

In a comprehensive listing of entries from "Aalto, Hugo Alvar Henrik" to "Zui Weng Yi," Boyce illuminates readers about furniture styles, construction details, terminology, furniture designers, and design movements throughout history and throughout the world. He includes information on European-inspired classical, baroque, rococo, pop, and modernist styles, among many others. A helpful guide to buying furniture is included, and offers advice on how to settle on a budget, how to determine what you need for your space, how to ensure against fraud, and what to do if you are unhappy with a purchase. This helpful reference will surely prove handy for both furniture enthusiasts and those looking to redecorate or refresh their homes. --Robin Donovan

I bought this book for a History of Furniture class and found I didn't use it at all. While there are discriptions of the pieces, there are only black and white sketches of select styles, not a good visual. You can find better info on the internet.

This book is an excellent reference book, a requirement for a class I took entitled "History of Furniture and Architecture." If you are looking for a picture book, this isn't for you. Its black and white drawings are serviceable, but it is the text that makes it so valuable. There are informative synopses of different periods of furniture design and clear definitions. Overall it is a must-have addition for a design student's reference library.

3 out of 5 stars An Historically Improtant Book.......2004-07-20

Over the many years I have used Stone's Glossary as a reference, I have seldom been disappointed, but then I don't ask too much of it either. Keeping in mind the era in which it was compiled and the biases thereof, I have little difficulty extracting useful information from it when needed. There are many modern references which are more accurate, and certainly the study of arms and armour has produced more informative works. There are few that rival this work in detail of scope, however. Those which cast as broad a cultural net have fewer examples and entries, while those that are more detailed seldom have nearly as many examples from so wide an area.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone researching the era for any kind of period fiction or screenplay, especially anything dealing with the height and decline of the British Colonial Empire.

4 out of 5 stars Ecclectic but broad collection of arms and armour descriptio.......2002-04-26

This eccentric collection of arms and armour descriptions began as Stone's personal glossary and progressed into the seminal work of his time. Despite its random and too often erroneous misconceptions (the man couldn't figure out how double mail was made or what it was even though he had seen it on several occasions) it offers an ecclectic smattering of the arms and armour Stone encountered during his lifetime. Read with caution, this Glossary proves to be a valuable resource to the arms and armour scholar.

        4 out of 5 stars Stones Glossary.......2002-02-13

A very well illustrated and concise pictionary if you will of arms and armor around the world. A good basic reference work for the arms enthusiast or re-enactor.

2 out of 5 stars Of all places at all times?.......2002-02-10

For the author's supposed fixation on 'Oriental' weaponry, he covers absolutely nothing in regards to Chinese weapons. One picture caption talks about a Japanese chain weapon "Above an unnamed Chinese weapon." The weapon that is 'unnamed' is a wind and fire wheel, much like the indian chakram, but a very popular wepaon nontheless.

His coverage of Indian, Indonesean and Japanese weapons is acceptable, but his coverage of Chinese wepaons, a very significant field as far as warfare is concerned, is lousey at best. "Of all places places at all times" isn't an accurate description by a long shot, but it's an easy reference for people looking into european weapons for certain. The fact that it was written originally in the 20s makes for a lack of up-to-date info, but again, it's an easy to use reference

4 out of 5 stars still, the only one........2001-07-25

Despite past "killer" reviews, it is a vital work: easy to use and comprehensive. It is advised however not for the novice because of scattered errors and imagionary information. One must use it along with other, refined works and judge carefully the details.
