Love the book. And also loved the fact that it came in 3 days. Didn't have to wait long. thanks
Felt Wee Folk.......2007-08-23
This is just the sweetest and most informative book ever. I just can't believe that Salley Mavor shared this information with all of us. There are so many wonderful pictures of all different types of Wee Folk, with patterns to follow. And the directions to make the delightful little people are very easy to follow. If you need to make anything that involves little characters, please try this book. You won't be disappointed.
It's a keeper!.......2007-06-22
I have to admit that my usual MO involves perusing craft books in the store and NOT buying. I did that at first with this book too - and I was very happy with the results. BUT the book has so much in it, and so many different eye-popping designs, that it really is worth buying. I think it's worth it just to show you what you can accomplish with felt and embroidery floss - I haven't even tried the dolls yet!
There are so many cute projects to do with felt - little purses, pins, etc. I am inspired - now I want to try sewing felt designs onto shirts for my young daughters. I have so many ideas after reading this book!
Best Craft Book!.......2007-06-09
These little dolls are SO FUN!! I bought it to make them for my daugther and she just loves them. The instructions are easy and the pictures make you want to make little felt people all the time.
Adorable Craft Book.......2006-10-08
I just received this book as a gift after wanting it for quite a while. The wee little folk are not difficult to make and the directions are clear. The pages are inspirational and have simple little details that add to their charm. Wait until you see the pirate with the skull embroidered on his pirate hat... and the darling flower fairies.. It is all so wonderful!
Book Description
Doll-making inspired by cultural icons
Finding meaning in your art is one thing; doing it for the fun of the creation is another. How do they go together? Making dolls inspired by cultural icons brings new meaning to your work and helps you connect with larger universal truths. Doll makers are very conscious of and interested in the history of the human/female figure and cultural icons, and often use them as starting points for their designs. Spirit dolls, African icons, goddess figures, and Hopi katichinas are all popular forms.
Using history as a starting point, Lisa-Li Hertzi has created five exciting doll projects, inspired by five very different cultural and historical icons/figures. Through the projects, she explores the creative process, the meaning and significance of each figure, and teaches techniques that doll makers are currently experimenting with: journaling, collage, mixed media, and found objects. Each doll is presented as a step-by-step project with complete instructions, and is followed by a gallery featuring interpretations by leading doll artists of the same cultural figure. Fantastic full color illustrations and patterns by the author are included.

Inspirational Book.......2007-09-04
If you are a doll maker who is Here and want to go Over There, get this book!
Turn one page and Li's creativity and energy jump out at you. Patterns, color illustrations, Li's delightful musings, illustrations only Li can do make this book unique.
It is aptly subtitled "Exploring Projects and Processes through Cultural Traditions." Li buries deep into the souls and archetypes of societies to create her goddesses, talismen - and all with a delightful sense of humor not to be found anywhere else.
Lisa Hertzi is an artist on so many levels and I hope this is just the first of many books with which she will bless us. Below my name is an example of one of her musings, which we must urge her to increase in the next book.
Watch for more books by this unique artist!
Go from wherever you are in the doll art world and move Over to There with this book.
can't wait. . ........2007-08-29
I can't wait to start making the art dolls in this wonderful book. I've already gotten ideas for creating my own art dolls.
Not what I hoped for.......2007-08-26
I was excited to get this book, but to be honest,if I saw it in a store, I would have placed it back on the shelf, instead of purchasing it.
It really is about one person's style in dollmaking, and to be frank, there seems to be a trendiness in this particular style of doll crafting that is really so common these days.Weird and wild is wonderful, but gets repititious and dull after a while. There are so many magazines out there that emulate the patterns and techniques used, maybe I have just seen to much of this. There are patterns included, so if you are a novice dollmaker, you might be very pleased with this book.I am giving it to a freind of mine, she liked it better than I did.
Art Doll Adventures by Lisa Li Hertzi.......2007-07-21
I truly love this book. I make cloth art dolls, and like unusual dolls made from interesting shapes that can be tailored to my own designs. The patterns in the book are fun as is - and certainly can be adjusted and reworked endlessly.
I like the ideas for embellishments and design - the photos are well worth looking at and spurred much creative thinking and planning. The author is obviously a fun, spontaneous person who gives lots of permission to play and go your own way - while providing ideas and directions at the same time.
I have recommended this book to everyone I know who likes and makes cloth art dolls. Everyone I've shown it to has wanted a copy for herself.
I would caution those who like more traditional, Raggedy Ann dolls or baby dolls, that they may not find this to their taste. However, if you are interested in pushing your limits and opening up to new and unique ideas, you will certainly have fun with the book.
Refreshingly creative book.......2007-06-20
A refreshingly creative book that makes you immediately
want to go out and make something new and different. This
is not just a book about dolls and sewing; it's an artistic
exploration of culture, color, materials, and processes.
Lovely color photos, drawings, and step-by-step instructions.

Good Instructions, But Poor Photographs. Basic Projects, Fun For Most Miniature Crafters. A Good Book........2007-04-21
If you're looking for something to guide you through the basic steps of sewing a bedspread, mini quilt, 1:12 scale pillows, etc., this book will be a great help. If you are one who is very much into seeing color photos of the finished projects, you may be disappointed. This book definitely lacked in the picture department. There were so few pictures and I think instructional books ought to illustrate the steps of each project, not just the overall finished piece. Anyway, I would rate this one as good, but I can't say great. Also, it's a bit dated for my taste. You can sort of tell it's an older book just by looking at the cover. It would be nice if this book was re-published in a revised edition.
VERY Basic info.......2006-11-05
This book would be good for someone just starting out in the miniature "world." Most experienced collectors figured these things out as a child. Great book for a child! Or, if you're just starting out, you need this to get very basic information.
Dollhouse Furnishing for the Bedroom and Bath.......2005-02-09
This is one of the best books I have purchased as a beginning miniaturist ever. It covers the "nuts to bolts" on how to create just about everything in the bedroom and bath...my only regret...I haven't found a book for the other rooms! I would recommend this book to anyone from the beginner to the pro's.
Disappointing.......2005-01-12
Most of the content of this book is common sense. If you care enough to search out a book about building miniatures, you've probably already given it enough thought to figure out that you can cut a robe shape out of terrycloth and sew it together for the bathroom, or use sandwich bags for shower curtains. I was very excited waiting for this book to arrive, but wound up returning it.
The ideas aren't BAD, but they're not worth paying for. Vaunted as being written by an individual famed for museum displays in miniature, I expected more details than the rather crude interpretations in the book. Certainly one loses detail in working with 1/12 scale, but even the photos of the samples in the book show poorly chosen, out of scale trim. (The eyelet on the edge of the towels is a prime example.)
Surprisingly, the old children's book "Boxed-In Doll Houses" [...] is a better source for innovative ideas. Certainly you would not want to actually USE a stryrofoam cup for a chair, but given the idea, you could use said cup as a base for forming a polymer clay or woven reed one. All the projects made with cardboard boxes could easily be converted into wooden ones with minimal woodworking skill. See if your library has it, or consider picking up a used copy.
Definitely Worth Buying!!.......2003-02-11
I recently purchased this book and it gave excellent instructions for Curtains, towels, Bed Covers and pillows and some furniture as well. Its definitely worth the money!!:)

Buyer Beware!!.......2003-11-05
Patterns and projects? Give me a break! I think next year I'll write a book on how to build a rocking horse. If I use the format presented here, all I need to do is suggest that you buy some wood. I'll provide the measures and of you go. Good luck.
Don't buy this book. Frankly these toys simply don't work as well as suggested. Perhaps the author was so caught up in getting the measurements right, that he forgot to give any instructions that would have made cutting all those articulating pieces worth the effort. Your money would be better spent on "Fun to Make Wooden Toys and Games" by Jeff and Jennie Loader. This book is filled with useful and excellent illustrations. What a gem.
Great Book.......2002-03-26
This is a great book for creating toys with your scroll saw. There are easy and hard projects and a few in between. This book is well written and laid out well. I would like more photos of completed projects though, this book only gives you diagrams and instructions. Without completed project photos I only gave this book 4 stars. It is the best book I have seen for scroll saw toys. I've already made several toys out of this book and I've really enjoyed having something to create with my scroll saw. I highly recommend this book for anyone with a scroll saw.

In the spirit of Rube Goldberg, pinball, and bubble-gum machines, Alan and Gill Bridgewater present ten wildly complex marble-action woodworking projects that are as entertaining to make as they are to play with. Contraptions such as the Marble Deceleration Honeycomb Maze, Perpetual Random Number Shuffler, and Marble Rotator Finger-Touch Tumbler Labyrinth can each be constructed easily in a weekend, but in finished form will baffle those who dare to dally with them. Step-by-step instructions with accompanying photos and detailed plans make construction easy. Metric conversions included.

Is okay if you want to do everything by hand........2007-02-01
In today's world not many woodworkers make things by hand. The book is hard to work with, difficult to find basic stock requirements and measurements. I would not buy again.
Not very clear!.......2006-02-21
This book contains 10 ideas for games which seem to be what every child would enjoy. The problem is that most of the figures used in the book to give construction details leave a lot to be desired. Most of the photos are black and white and difficult to see any detail. The drawings are also in black and white and are also very difficault to follow.
OK for ideas, but not for projects.......2000-08-05
I was disappointed as well. I expected projects I could build, but nothing struck me as worth the time. The basic ideas are OK, marble rollers, and so on. But I would only use this stuff as a departure point for my own designs.
Making Marble-Action Games, Gadgets, Mazes & Contraptions.......2000-02-17
This book was a terrible disappointment. I wanted to give it no stars but that didn't seem to be an option. For most of these gadgets he begins the chapter by explaining that they don't actually work very well, they tend to jam and clog up requiring a certain amount of tilting and tapping to clear the device. Many of the mazes and such are non-functional - they are there to make the contraption look complicated. It's clear to me from looking at it that the dice substitute will never generate a 1, 2, or 6, and the thing is definitely not uniform like dice would be. The spirit of Rube Goldberg is represented by contraptions that do a lot but accomplish very little. The mechanisms in this book just don't do anything. I didn't find a single satisfying project in here and felt like it was a waste of twenty bucks. And what are metric conversion tables doing in here? An embarrassment if you ask me. If you like this kind of stuff get Making Wooden Mechanical Models by Alan and Gill Bridgewater. It is far superior.
Few dimensions are given........1999-11-16
I am used to making projects for which dimensions for the various pieces are provided. Not only does the author fail to provide dimensions but he also fails to even talk about some of the pieces that are part of a given project.

New uses for old toys.......2002-06-07
My kids got tired of their toys. i got tired of buying them new ones. So I found this book and discovered through it....new uses for the toys they already had. It was like buying all new toys. I cannot recommend this book enough if you don't want to go out and buy new toys. And, it teaches kids the science behind the toys, which is an added benefit.
This is Fun +++++.......2001-03-29
I bought this book at a bookstore and liked the content. It is a very easy to use book to use with children. I have used it with my kindergarten kids and my kids who are older at home. There are so many good ideas and concepts to learn that even we teachers can learn from it! I like the book very much...in fact so much that I am going toget this author's other books through Amazon!
Science in Seconds with Toys.......2001-03-24
My kids got tired of their toys. We do not have the money to buy new ones, so my eye caught this book. I LOVE IT!!!. The book gives a whole new adventure to our kids toys. They not only learned some important science concepts with them...they now look at all of their toys and try to think of other ways to use them. This book saved me money and taught my children some important academics! I highly recommend!
Customer Reviews:
Almost a very good book.......1999-09-14
I have found, like the other reviewer, the plans are often incomplete with measurements which are either missing or require effort to calculate. The plans, although very interesting, are done to a scale that makes measuring the sizes of pieces difficult.
I like the concepts of the plans but felt the author's true goal was to get me to order the full size plans offered in the back of the book.
On the other hand the book has wonderful ideas and if you are the type of person who is able to transform good ideas into your own plans this is a very good book for you.
Excellent toy designs, however some plans are incomplete........1999-04-10
This book features some excellent designs for construction vehicles that will both satisfy the woodworker and the lucky child that receives the toys. With some disappointment, however, the plans are incomplete, missing various critical views and dimensions, making the toys that much more difficult to reproduce. The alternative is to be creative and "guess" at the dimensions or, purchase full size plans advertised in the back of the book.
Excellent variety of plan selection and skill levels ..........1996-09-28
As a freelance draftsperson this book is one of four by Sun Designs that I had the
pleasure of assisting with. 'Classic Toys in Wood' was a true
delight as was the follow up book 'Making Timeless Toys in Wood'.
Classic Toys in Wood contains 40 toy plans including; construction toys,
a host of fun toys in the 'boat marina' theme, rocking horses, and more.
The book itself contains 12 mini plans as well as an illustrated story
for children.
My niece was just a small child while I was working with the
protypes of these toys. She visited often and of course loved to
play test them. She especially liked the ferris wheel and all
the little people she could put on the ride.
Unlike some mass made toys, these stood up to the rigors of play.
Along with the mini-plans included in the book you will find
excellent step-by-step instructions and materials lists.
Full size plans for all the toys shown in the book can be ordered directly from Sun Designs.
