Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-05-09
I had this book for a PhD class in finance and have very few good words to say. The derivations should have been omitted: rarely is anything followed from the beginning to the end; the excerpts that are provided do not give much additional insight. Abundant typos in the formulas. In addition, the context of the models is often poorly presented and I was often left wondering what the situation or some assumptions are. Overall, relatively poorly written.
The book does give an overview of a lot of papers and as long as it is viewed as a starting point to read the papers it is acceptable. Still, the presentation is very fragmented and frustrating, creating a strong desire to read the original papers.
A Good Update to a Classic Text.......2007-04-09
It took a while before this 4th edition came out. The 2nd and 3rd editions were pretty good, and the 4th ed still contains a lot of the old material. Clearly, this says something about finance theory - but it updates a lot of the empirical results and includes some new/relevant topics. I would have to agree that this book is probably a little shallow for the Ph.D. level, but most Ph.D. corporate finance courses probably would use papers rather than texts. Hence, that's where your actual derivations and the actual author's thought comes from. On the other hand, this book takes a very good approach and the authors are very respected in the field. In terms of a more advanced MBA text, I think that this is the best book available.
It is definitely not a book for PhD level.......2006-08-01
The book suggests it serves as a first course in finance for PhD students, and a second course in finance for master students. But as I see it, it is too shallow for PhD level reading, as it never explain some complicated derivation clear enough. You don't know how some statements or conclusions come from. There is just not enough explanation. I mean, the author could have said that "after some derivations" or "it can be shown that...", but they just give some results without mentioning whether it can be derived with some convoluted math but because it is out of the depth of the book, only the result is given, or it just comes easily from the assumptions or conditons. I have to figure their logic since usually I just like to thought about how to derive a result as I am supposed to read it as a first book in finance for a PhD student. Many times I have to give up figuring, as the steps the authors take from the conditions to the results are usually too big to guess. So I ended up with treat this book as an ElEMENTARY level book, giving up any derivation and analyzing, just taking the results as granted.
According to my roommate who is a master in finance student and who happened to look at my book for curiosity, this book looks too deep for a master level in some topics, e.g., real options. They try to talk about some complicated financial theories, not deep and clean enough for a PhD student and also not that intuitive to understand for a master student.
In sum, I would say, don't waste money and time on this book. If you are a PhD student, read some books or papers treating certain topics with clear derivations and depth. If you are a master student, though my opinion is sort of partial, the book does not provide good intution for some advanced topics.
It's a masterpiece!.......2005-03-31
"Financial theory and corporate policy" is THE theory-of-finance book. It is so well-written, concise, and most importantly, it gives you the framework of conceptual knowledge and intuition to understand what the literature on financial theory is trying to do and how it all fits together. It is appropriate for a second course in finance or a first PhD level course. The building blocks needed to get the most out of this text is matrix algebra, elementary calculus (integrals and differentials), intermediate microeconomics, basic statistics (regression analysis), some optimization (min and max of functions), and basic financial skills such as discounting, the use of cash flows, pro forma income statements and balance sheets. The book has excellent appendices if you lack or need to brush up on these topics. Also, after each chapter state-of-the-art references are listed, very useful if you want to delve a little deeper. To summarize, I just love this book, and I think you will too.

Book Description
Natsuo Kirino made a spectacular fiction debut on these shores with the publication of Edgar Award-nominated Out (“Daring and disturbing . . . Prepared to push the limits of this world . . . Remarkable”—Los Angeles Times). Unanimously lauded for her unique, psychologically complex, darkly compelling vision and voice, she garnered a multitude of enthusiastic fans eager for more.
In her riveting new novel Grotesque, Kirino once again depicts a barely known Japan. This is the story of three Japanese women and the interconnectedness of beauty and cruelty, sex and violence, ugliness and ambition in their lives.
Tokyo prostitutes Yuriko and Kazue have been brutally murdered, their deaths leaving a wake of unanswered questions about who they were, who their murderer is, and how their lives came to this end. As their stories unfurl in an ingeniously layered narrative, coolly mediated by Yuriko’s older sister, we are taken back to their time in a prestigious girls’ high school—where a strict social hierarchy decided their fates—and follow them through the years as they struggle against rigid societal conventions.
Shedding light on the most hidden precincts of Japanese society today, Grotesque is both a psychological investigation into the female psyche and a classic work of noir fiction. It is a stunning novel, a book that confirms Natsuo Kirino’s electrifying gifts.

Changes in translation?.......2007-10-09
I really enjoyed this book, but it can't be compared to Out. It has Kirino's dark outlook, but it's not a crime novel per se. However, when I read that changes had been made to the english version, I interviewed the editor of the book, and she explained the changes made. The interview appears on my blog, http://literatiny.blogspot.com I hope it answers many of the questions posed here.
A very ugly read.......2007-08-29
I really enjoyed Out and was was looking forward to this next book. What a disappointment. The writing style read like an amateuristic attempt at an interview. I felt no connection or interest in any of the characters, just an increasing sense of distaste as I got deeper into the book. At the end I felt relieved that it was over and dismayed that the author of such a great book (Out) followed up with something so terrible.
not as good as the first book but.......2007-08-25
still worth reading. wraps around itself but doesn't become strangled. it delves deeply into the characters psyche's and how they became what they are, how they died to themselves, and how they died to each other.
A must read!.......2007-08-20
Could not put this one down. A dense psycological thriller, filled with thought provoking social commentary.
I wish more of her books were translated.
Longwinded and boring.......2007-08-17
It can't be compared with Out, Kirino's masterpiece. It reads like a first draft, with long drawn out explanations, much too much about Japanese girls' schools, and completely uninspired descriptions. The chapters are narrated by different characters, all about equally dull.

Learning to pray the answer.......2007-09-21
Prayers That Avail Much - This book helps one to pray the answer, not the problem. After Amen! - to there it is, it helps you state your case, keeping God in remembrance with Thanksgiving until you see the circumstances change. Isa.43:23
Definetly a blessing.......2007-07-15
I actually bought another copy of this book for my family member, it has been a huge blessing to me and my husband.
Excellent Tool.......2007-06-25
Prayers That Avail Much books are excellent. You can find help with every kind of situation that arises. I used the book for Teens to teach a class and the group wanted to buy the book. They were excited.
Great book of everyday prayers.......2007-05-26
This is a fantastic book of everyday, every situational prayers. To make it even better, they have them nicely indexed in the front so you can locate the exact prayer you need. Add the soft leather binding and the book just feels right in your hand.
Absolutely a must have for you prayer warriors or anyone looking to expand their prayer library.
Not very availaing!.......2007-05-17
I had purchased this book as a reference for sacred space consultations, in particular with blessings and personal healing. I have since returned this book as I found it not very inspiring nor powerful in its wording. I do not feel that I am speaking to God but rather just reciting meaningless mantras.

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain: A Survival Manual (2nd Edition) .......2007-10-07
A good book to help me learn something more about managing pain of sick people...i am a sports medicine doctor.
Fibromyalgia/CMP review...great book!!!!.......2007-08-17
I was just diagnosed w/fibromyalgia and had borrowed this book from a relative. I liked it so much, I purchased one for my own reference guide to help with the pain. My new doctor prescribed Lyrica to help as well. Although this book has been out awhile, it's still VERY informative and useful. It is written in a way that non-medical folks can easily understand it. Kudos to Mrs. Devin Starlanyl...your dedication to this book has been a real blessing in the lives of both myself and my aunt. THANKS FOR YOUR SACRIFICE OF WRITING THIS SECOND EDITION!!!!
The best book on fibromyalgia.......2007-08-09
This is my 3rd copy as I have loaned it twice and not gotten it back. With the second edition there is even more great information that is so helpfuling living my life with this very difficult disease.
Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain.......2007-07-16
Few books actually change a person's life or way of thinking. Fibromyalgia & Chronic Myofascial Pain actually did that for me. Like many people with FM and/or CMP, I went through a long, painful (both physically and emotionally painful) period of diagnosis and an even longer period of denial. I felt that since everyone else seemed to question my invisible symptoms that it was in my best interests to try to ignore what was really going on in my body and in my mind. So I suffered in silence and isolation with only my family knowing the diagnosis and no one really knowing the extent of my situation.
Reading Fibromyalgia & Chronic Myofascial Pain was like having a truly meaningful conversation with someone in the same situation as me. Someone who had not only accepted that these conditions actually exist but also had developed real life strategies to deal with everyday life and unexpected flare ups. For the first time since this roller coaster ride started, I felt empowered.
Great, if you have fibro.......2007-06-15
If you only have CMP (chronic myofascial pain), and if that CMP is of relatively recent onset and you have the slightest clue as to what set it off, you probably don't need all the information in Starlanyl's book and would do better, presuming limited $$, with a good trigger point manual and a couple of tennis balls.
Starlanyl is full of useful information that can help people who have found their conditions overwhelming, as is evidenced by all the ravingly 5-star positive reviews. OTOH, if you have a pretty good grasp of pain management, and maybe dietary adjustments, and possibly even various forms of bodywork, you may find yourself turning pages pretty fast. Then again, it's not that expensive (about the same as a generic pain prescription).
I won't be returning it, but I'll be in Clair Davies' book (Trigger Point Therapy Workbook) a whole lot more and I coulda bought half a Theracane with the cost of Starlanyl.

Praying the scriptures.......2007-07-01
How do you know if you're praying for the right things? You can't go wrong when you're praying the scriptures! I've owned the books that go into this for many years and they are always close at hand for those times when I'm unsure in a situation, or my prayer time has become lukewarm. It is broken down into prayers for every situation so it's easy to find what you need and the scripture verses that are used. I've given them as gifts for years for friends and relatives and it makes a good gift for new believers. This edition is gorgeous, but what is inside is priceless.
Wonderful.......2007-03-27
A coworker was sending this book to his son in the military overseas and let me take a peak. I was so impressed that I purchased one for my family and my father. It has prayers for any situtation imaginable. I highly recommend.
An Excellent Guide to Help Your Prayer Life.......2007-03-10
Recently I signed up to participate in the Intercessory Prayer Ministry at our church and noticed this title the first time I went to the prayer room.
Before I intercede for others, I use this book to help me get in the right frame of mind by praying for myself first. The book contains prayers for every circumstance: God's guidance, wisdom, discernment, relationships, weariness, financial concerns, etc.
The prayers are written as Bible verses so in essence when you pray these, you are praying God's Word back to Him. I have found myself to be in a better frame of mind when I use the book to prepare me to pray for others.
I highly recommend the book for anyone who wants to strengthen their prayer life and to also help memorize verses from God' Word. Again, there are prayers for practically every situation in life.
Read, pray, and enjoy!
Prayers for My Needs.......2007-02-16

Customer Reviews:
Great book.. especially if your a computer geek or shy.........2007-08-16
I never had problems getting women.. However, This book is right on target. If you want a manual to getting laid.. this is definatly it..watch out though.. these traitors also have a book for women on how to watch out for guys like us that use this book..lol there getting it from both ends ;)
The only dating book you'll ever need!.......2007-08-09
I'm a college student with average looks. Not long ago I broke up with my first girlfriend and was having trouble getting back in the dating game. I was able win occasional dates, but rarely did these dud dates turn into something interesting. I needed extra help.
I gave this book a chance, and much to my surprise it had the answer key I was looking for. How to Succeed with Women is your own personal "Hitch" that will coach you all aspects in the art of seduction. Unlike other sources what merely present vague advice and tips, this book carefully lays out the do's/don't and tells you precisely how to handle females for success.
It covers every aspect of interacting with women: from how to meet them, to flirting, dating, the bedroom, and beyond. It will build your confidence, and get you understanding the universal psychology of how all females think. The best thing is how descriptive and straightforward it is. I particularly liked the imaginary scenarios presented with Bruce (an effective seducer) and Bob (the ineffective seducer). As you read through, you may even recognize Bob-like tendencies in yourself that can be easily corrected.
I have applied the material from this book and have met immediate success. As one chapter states, the system presented in this book works especially well on geeky/technical minded guys because it is simple as reading a manual! I agree - after putting this book to practice you will wish they had a chapter on handling too many babes. Better yet, fully applying it will help you reinvent your lifestyle to not only succeed with women, but to become a cool character capable of facing all challenges of life.
How to Succeed with Women...........2007-04-27
I read this book many years ago and came across it on Amazon. I read some of the reviews and thought I would offer my perspective. By way of context, I do professional and personal growth coaching and have a graduate education in both biochemistry and psychology. I also played in a band for 11 years and got to watch the dating world from a distance as well as the dynamics between men and women. As a young man, I wasn't shy and being in a band I had a good degree of success with women.
First of all, I do believe that the techniques in this book will really work with a lot of people. I think it plays into women's evolutionary biology and social conditioning. The problem I see with a lot of the contents, however, is that encourages you to be inauthentic and even manipulative. While I understand that to some extent flirting and playing the dating game is similar to sales, but at a certain point this can cross over to manipulation and I believe this book crosses that line.
Second, if you are not being yourself and a particularly attractive woman decides to date you, you will always have to hide who you are and you will never know if she would really love you for you. Also, most likely you will be found out and then your heart will be broken.
If your agenda is to have casual sex, then this book can most certainly help you to find what you are looking for. However, I have to wonder who would want to marry someone who doesn't see and treat women like fellow human beings. If they are doing the same thing in the dating market that seems to me to be their problem. In my case, I would rather invest in being a good person who really cares and finding someone who genuinely appreciates me for who I really am. While I might end up getting less sex, I would most likely have better quality sex with less risk and with a clear conscience.
Something I wondered about philosophically when I did read this book was if I am being phoney and I run across the right woman, she might not recognize me and I could miss the opportunity of a lifetime. In short, if you really believe you have something worthwhile to offer, then why resort to manipulation? If you don't believe you have something worthwhile to offer than why not change that? Resorting to manipulation to get women seems to me like a tacit acceptance that you are not OK as you are. In the long run, I don't see how that could be good for a person's self esteem.
On the other hand, there is a lot of worthwhile content in the book that is good advice, entertaining or at least food for thought. I wouldn't discourage any man from reading this book and deciding what is ethical for him.
Finally, while I do believe there is a tendency for women to want good looking, athletic, attractive and wealthy men, this evolutionary programming is not necessarily destiny. There seems to be many layers to the human psyche and while women and men may have some biological hardwiring, they are also wired to bond and form a family. In this context, intelligence, kindness, conversational ability, vulnerability, love, compassion and the ability to form authentic connections is also a BIG turn on. Personally, I think a man ought to decide what is his most important values and develop them to the fullest, then find a woman who finds these things sexy and valuable. That sounds like a recipe for long term success.
As someone who works with individuals and couples, I hear a lot of heart breaking stories about infidelity, lying, and incompatability. I see a lot of people who waste effort on things without lasting value. Why not become the type of person you want to find and that trust that like will attract like? I have found that this is the best and most fulfilling approach to dating.
Some books you might enjoy that are in a similar vein, but stress long-term happiness are: The Way Of The Superior Man: A Spiritual Guide to Mastering the Challenges of Woman, Work, and Sexual Desire, Finding God Through Sex: Awakening The One Of Spirit Through The Two Of Flesh, Are You the One for Me?: Knowing Who's Right and Avoiding Who's Wrong and Be the Person You Want to Find: Relationship and Self-Discovery.
If you want to understand evolutionary psychology around mating, then I strongly recommend The Evolution of Desire: Strategies of Human Mating. Another good book that looks at the psychological dimensions of the erotic is The Erotic Mind: Unlocking the Inner Sources of Passion and Fulfillment. These last two books are "must haves" in my book. You may also enjoy the The Female Brain to get a better understanding of women. The more you understand about people (including yourself), sexuality and life at all levels, the better you will be as a sex partner, mate and human being. That has been my formula to meet interesting people and you may want to temper some of what you learn in HOW TO SUCCEED WITH WOMEN in a larger embrace. If you are in a place were casual sex is the only thing on the agenda, then the first two books in this paragraph would also be interesting and educational about the mating dynamics that this book is largely based upon.
I read it carefully and used it.......2007-02-10
I bought this book quite a while ago. At the time I was completely lonely. I had never been on a date, I was so shy I couldn't talk to women, and I had no idea how socializing worked. This book helped me understand how women think and how I should be thinking.
First of all, you should be aware that in the beginning of the book they give you advice that is in line with what a real therapist would tell you. The problem with that is you have to spend a potentially long time to get your life get to the point they advise. Basically they tell you to get your life in order, clean up, be passionate about your life, be proud of yourself and who you are, etc., you know the deal. So NO, this book is NOT a quick-fix. But it does tell you in rational/logical man-speak WHY you should follow this time-honored advice (that everyone tells you, and they give suggestions how to get on that path) and what exactly that attitude will do for you when it comes to women. However, if you can't do everything (let's say you're a natural born ugly or you're overweight), they offer some work-arounds and examples to help you out and how you can overcome some things by strengthening other aspects of you.
So now that you got that out of the way, finish reading the book and you will see they give you straight up advice about how to make things go your way. They don't tell you it's going to be easy. In fact, they tell you it's going to be hard, it's going to be a numbers game, but you have to keep at it because that is what winners do. It all makes logical sense. It makes you realize you probably give up way too easily when even the best players probably lose more times than you ever have.
I took the advice from the book and applied it to my thinking. When I started changing my reasoning and outlook to what they advised, talking to women and understanding why they acted the way they do made so much more sense. I had the knowledge to react to females accordingly. It took practice, and they say it will, but I got to the point where I was really getting positive responses from women and eventually getting touched, kissed, dating, and eventually landed one for real after a year or so of practice.
I don't totally owe my success to this book. I changed my life and this book just was one of the many things that helped. But I do owe it a lot of credit for teaching me how I should change my thinking to make it more female-friendly.
Very complete, but that's also it's biggest flaw.......2007-02-05
I'll make it short because many reviewers have already explained most of the stuff in this book.
If you've never dealt with the opposite sex, the information in this big book will help you to actually start having success. Although it is heavy focused on thinking rommantically, and full of pages with obvious-dressing-and-behaving tips for clueless guys, it will make you think about starting to improve your love life and put you in the right direction to flirt everywhere and become more social.
However, if you have already had women in your life, you know what you want (maybe just casual sex for example), dress well, already are a very social person, psychological-healthy, then you will find more than the half of the book with concepts you already know.
For the 'player' kind of guys, you will still find some useful information, but it is up to you if having 5 or 10% of new tips for you is worth the price of the paperback.
I can understand how six years ago this book was a hit, but nowadays, there's lot of info out there about dating, seduction and socializing, simpler and easier to read and start applying it instantly. However, it is still a recommended classic for guys who've never had a woman in their lives.

Good intro but that is it.......2007-08-03
This is a good intro to give the basics of valuation for "old economy" businesses. It determines the valuation of companies based almost exclusively on their cash flow over the previous few years to the analysis. Unfortunately it ignores too many issues that play an extremely important role in valuation. For example, the quality, background, knowledge of management, the products the company manufactures, the markets for these products, macroeconomic conditions, intellectual property, market position (i.e., oligopolistic? Is entry/exit difficult in the industry?). Not one of these issues is even touched upon!!! The authors seem to be implying that these issues are irrelevant!! Only the cash flow over the previous few years applied forward (i.e., discounted for present value) matters according to the book!!! Perhaps this type of mentality explains why the overwhelming majority of mergers and acquistions fail!!!!
Nothing spectacular.......2006-04-03
Unfortunately, for all the name brand that this book conveys, I think the cover seems to be the most intriguing part. There are much better ways for book peddling and the fact that a firm such as McKinsey allowed their name on the title of a book for the sake of a few sales, boggles this readers mind. The subject matter seems to be along the lines of the bull session with all bull and no session. No actual quantitative analysis is used throughout the book, and if anything more than an encyclopedic definition is learned from this book, I would be astounded. Save some money and go search online for some basic books on beginning valuation. By the way, those giving 5 stars either can't read English very well or are shills for McKinsey.
Waste of Time.......2005-04-12
Any book by Damodaran is far better for business managers and portfolio managers.
For portfolio managers, estimating the cash-flows is a small part of the valuation process, the easiest. As the financial field and practice is becoming more and more quantitative, the cutting edge of asset pricing is to estimate time-varying risk premiums. Actually, almost 90% of variation in stock prices come from risk shifts, not from news on company cash-flows.
If you are interested in asset pricing i would suggest a mix of damodaran (20%) and "Asset Pricing" by John Cochrane (80%).
Good but bad Excel support.......2004-01-29
I liked this book. In Russia it is one of the most popular books on valuatuion. But when I can get the perfect excel support for Investment Valuation by Aswath Damodaran or good web support for Valuation Methods and Shareholder Value Creation by Pablo Fernandez, I ask the authors, why don't they put supporting material in disk? I think that the price of their sowtware ($94.50) is too high compairing with the book ($56 with discount), because there is no supporting materials - only 1 spreadsheet (from my point of view does not conform to McKinsey, as the leader of consulting business). I hope, for the 4-th edition we will have a good excel support.
User-unfriendliness at its best.......2003-01-11
Hmm I wonder if those giving this book five stars actually work for McKinsey. As a practioner, I don't know anyone in the industry who has actually read this book. It looks impressive on the bookshelf, but the content is anything but impressive. A lot of topics are covered, but each one only superficially and the writing is extremely dry and boring. I actually found reading this volume *painful*, and I'm supposed to like this stuff since I do it for a living! My advice for any potential buyer is read a few chapters first before you shell out for it.

The dilivery time was great however, I didnt recall the specifics of the book stating that there was tons of writing in the book, to the point of not being able to read certain sections.

excellent guide to the Canadian Rockies.......2007-08-26
I purchased this book to research where the best above-timberline scenery and scrambles would be in Banff and Jasper, and was not disappointed. I can't remember ever seeing a better guidebook -- some in the same league, like J. Gordon Edwards' book, but not a better one. Usually, the lack of good color photos is the major drawback to guidebooks, but the number and quality of the photos in this book is amazing, and the text is really helpful in getting a feel for what the place is like, above and beyond the simple mileages. Even if you're not hiking there soon, this is a great armchair book.
I might have rated this book only as 4 stars, due only to lack of topographic maps... but on reflection, if you're going to be out hiking, you'll be carrying topographic maps with you anyway, not an entire hiking book, so that's not really a drawback.
I noticed that one review compared this book unfavorably with Brian Patton's "Canadian Rockies Trail Guide." The latter is also an excellent book (I have both the 8th and a previous edition), but is more "factual" and less opinionated in tone, has black and white rather than color photos, and doesn't attempt to compare quality of trails with each other. Both that book and this one are very good (I have both and they complement each other), but the color photos and willingness to venture opinions (and just plain enthusiasm) are among the strong points of the Copelands' book. Highly recommended.
Best hiking guide for the Canadain Rockies.......2007-08-07
I purchased 5 or 6 books on the subject and this is far and away the best guide. Very detailed, reliable and practical info, basic maps in the back with references to Gem Trek topo maps for each hike. Definitely worth the price. Don't waste your time or money on other references. The book is a bit dense and heavy to carry, but (as the authors point out), just make copies of what you need and leave the rest at home!
Not a waste of time at all........2007-06-04
This was almost the only guide we consulted when my sister and I hiked trails in eastern BC and Alberta in 2005. I say "almost" because we also looked up schedules for the Canadian railways. You see, one of our cranky specifications on the trip was that we would not drive anywhere, nor would we fly into or within Canada. Our goal was to see only those trails and towns within reach of the railroad tracks. We succeeded marvelously and could probably have done just as well had we used only the Copelands' books. Apparently they too are train-and-hike aficionados.
Excellent Guide, and Service!.......2007-03-05
Review of FIFTH EDITION (published July 2006)... I originally ordered this book through Amazon, but after not shipping for more than a month I decided to order it directly from the Authors. I was pleasantly surprised to have my email answered within a few hours, and to receive a phone call from Kathy Copeland shortly afterwards. As I was awaiting for the book to arrive, I had several email exchanges with Kathy, in which she freely gave hiking suggestions for Glacier NP, and answered specific questions. Before even seeing the book, it became obvious to me that the authors have great satisfaction in experiencing great hikes, and perhaps greater satisfaction in helping others have the same experience (something I can really relate to, and the very qualities you want in the author of a hiking book). With that quality of service, I had great anticipated the arrival of their book. I was not disappointed.
While the writing style is unique (interesting, humorous, whatever), make no mistake about it-- the book is "COMMON SENSE" to the core, both in content and in it's organization. And it follows the "golden rule"-- the authors provide exactly the kind of information that they (and most hikers) would want if they were to purchase a hiking book. The emphasis in rating hikes is primarily placed upon the WOW-factor of the hike (i.e. how much does this hike STIMULATE me scenically, be it through sweeping vistas, lush meadows, iridescent lakes,... whatever). Distances and elevations are specified in both English (miles/ft) and metric (km/m)... for those of you in the US who have never spent hours converting figures in a hiking book published in Canada, believe me, this is something to be VERY thankful for!
The beginning of the book includes a "Trip Locations" section-- overview maps of the various national parks, dotted with trail numbers, and on the same/opposite page they list names of the hikes and their rating (Premier, Outstanding, Worthwhile, Don't do). So the hikes are arranged visually by park location.
Shortly afterward, a "Dayhikes at a Glance" section arranges the hikes by rating (Premier's listed first, then Outstanding,...etc.), first for the dayhikes, then the backpacking trips. These tables also show distance and elevation gains. This is precisely the kind of information you need to plan a trip. An index of the very best "Wildflower Hikes" is a nice touch.
The introduction section(s) also cover all the standards you typically would expect (i.e. preparation, weather, bears, trail ethics,...etc.).
The back of the book includes a "Trip Maps" section-- these are not topo maps (which are generally useless tiny black/white photocopies in hiking books anyway), but appear to take the form of sketches, though apparently done using computer software. The maps do not illustrate 3-dimensional relief (i.e. valleys, ridges, mountains), but everything is clearly named: the path of the trail(s) shown in red, the lakes/rivers in blue, mountain peaks as black triangles, and parking/trailheads as black circles. The scale is also shown. The inclusion of distances and elevations (which is included in the individual hike overviews) would have made the maps perfect for a hiking book, but they fall short in this area (improvement project for the next edition?)
The individual hikes are very logically arranged. First, all of the day-hikes are listed in one section, followed by another section listing the backpacking (extended) hikes. VERY helpful if you mostly day-hike (as e do), or mostly backpacks. Within each of these sections, the authors list the Premier hikes first (ordered geographically as you move northwest through the Canadian Rockies), followed by all the Outstanding hikes,....etc. VERY helpful in identifying what hikes should be at the top of the itinerary. The description of each hike first includes the authors "Opinion", followed by all of the "Facts". Again, VERY helpful, because when facts/opinions are combined (as with most hiking books), you have to wade through all the factual info to get the opinions (i.e. determine if the hike is worth doing). Likewise, when you want to get the facts, you sometimes have to wade through opinions. Keeping them separate was a smart decision.
Each hike begins with a table which lists: Location, Round Trip Distance(s), Elevation Gain(s), Key Elevations, Hiking Time, Difficulty, and Maps (pg on which map is found, and specific topo map which can be purchased).
Nearly all hikes include a sizable color picture(s) of the most scenic portion(s) of the hike-- exactly what you would want to see. The opinionated descriptions describe exactly what makes this hike appealing, the degree to which it has appeal, and if unappealing, then suggested alternatives in the vicinity. VERY well done.
Suggested improvements? I think the authors place a heavy emphasis upon solitude, but for a significant number of people, this is not nearly as important as the scenic splendor. Yet, some hikes may have slipped a notch in the rating scale because of their heavy use. It would be helpful if hikes of this nature were denoted with a special symbol of some sort, both in the overview tables and in the table which introduces the individual hikes. To their credit, the authors frequently mention (in the Opinion section) which hikes see heavy usage, but a prominent visual cue indicating that the hike was demoted a rating level (for lack of solitude) would make an excellently arranged book even better.
I also own Grame Pole's book "Classic Hikes in the Canadian Rockies" (1999 edition). While this is one of my better hiking books (I own about a dozen), the Copeland's book is better in a variety of ways. If you want multiple opinions, buy both. If you want just one, then "Don't waste your..." money on anything other than Copeland's book: "Don't waste your time in the Canadian Rockies".
Great idea, great book.......2006-10-03
I hike a few times a year, and need to make each trip work well for me. This book was very well executed, and it let me pick exactly which hikes to do(for me, one backpack and two day-hikes), once I decided on the Canadian Rockies. I avoided what would have been a poorer alternative hike.
The concept for the book is refreshing and welcome. Many hiking books seem to have a sort of Lake Wobegone perspective, with all the trails average or above. I would use their other books if I ever go to one of those locations.

Perfect Loss Prevention Book!.......2003-12-05
All I needed to read in this excellent book was Chapter One. The author is right, ideal loss prevention is all in the Mindset. The tone is set from the first page on that loss in a business just isn't acceptable. That's a winning attitude if ever there was one. If you have Mr. Copeland's mindset, you can accomplish all the great profit-protecting ideas he presents in all the remaining chapters.
This is a sensible book, with common sense throughout its sixteen chapters. We're not taught business common sense anymore it seems, so this book is indeed refreshing.
After the Mindset, I was especially impressed with the cash protection chapter, and then all the remaining information that I'm using to protect my assets today. It works!
We're practicing absolutely zero loss in my business every day now, and we're all the better for it. This book is mandatory reading for my employees. Fine book.
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!.......2003-11-28
My first reaction was,"how can I possibly achieve that goal?" One chapter into this book and I understood that not only could I get there, but I had to get there. There is no other choice in today's business climate. Zero Loss is it!
I always look for a book that is positive, downright informative, and totally worth my precious time. This is that book. I learned important lessons on every page. Every sentence seemed perfectly relevent to my business, my employees, and my future.
We entrepreneurs and business managers want results; that's all that keeps us on top. Reading Mr. Copeland's book brings in the results, in a format that is easy to apply to about any business, if not every business. It is obvious that this author is an expert who has "been there and done that."
For knowledge delivered in an intelligent manner that just makes perfect sense, I absolutely recommend Absolutely Zero Loss.
Essential Tools and Attitudes for Small Businesses.......2001-03-22
An excellent source of ideas and facts about the illegal ways that a small business (or a large one really) can lose money through theft and other unanticipated mechanisms (loss) and how to prevent them.
Funny to, keeps your interest.
