Groucho was right!.......2005-03-02
Save your money and for sure don't buy this book! The only funny thing stated in this book was from Groucho Marx. He said, "From the moment I picked your book up until I laid it down I was convulsed with laughter. Someday I intend reading it." In respect for Groucho, I would have this to say to him, I read the book and there was nothing funny or laughable except for your quote.
There isn't ANYONE who won't benefit from this book!.......1999-11-09
Every single line in this marvelous book contains wisdom, good sense, and simple yet profoundly logical advice that we should apply to every day of our lives. You'll find yourself reading lines over several times to better remember what they say about the importance of laughter, how it can be misused, and how it can add immeasurably to our quality of life. Written with intelligence and humor in easy-to-read, conversational style, the author shows us that laughter should not be "laughed off" as unnecessary, unproductive or frivolous. I found myself repeatedly saying "what a great thought" or "what a fabulous idea." For those with problems, illnesses or aspects of their lives that are not really funny, this book offers rock-solid solutions for using laughter therapy to help you deal and cope in dramatically better ways. Few, if any, of us don't have stress or problems that drain our physical and emotional reservoirs -- and so, this book has inspiring, universal appeal. Light bulbs will go on for you when you read this unique book that will help you communicate more deeply, directly and enjoyably with others -- and with yourself. Life is often tragic and very real, and this book proves that it is also enormously funny. I would buy this book as a gift for everyone you know! There won't be anyone who won't thank you a thousand times over for it!

Parents will help children identify the beauty and hope in all cycles of life as they follow two insect friends, Lea and Nym, and the struggles one of them endures when her friend disappears. This is a tender story about loss and change, written to help parents express their views about life and death. The book may serve many purposes, such as comforting a grieving child who has lost someone close or providing facts about dragonflies to inquisitive minds. Lea's transformation into a dragonfly may even be used as a metaphor for life-after-death. The Dragonfly Door is beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson. The book is cherished by parents, grandparents and teachers. It was recently brought to life as a mini-play in Alabama to help children cope with the loss of their classmates. The following is an excerpt from the book: While Nym slept, she heard Lea's voice saying, "Follow me, Nym. I'm going to show you where I am." "Will I see you again?" Nym asked. "Only when it's time for you to die too," Lea replied. "You won't see me in the marsh ever again. But let me show you what I will look like the next time you see me. Here, close your eyes." Nym closed her eyes. "Now look at me," Lea said. Nym opened her eyes and saw ...

The warm, emotional colors of award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson.......2007-09-07
The debut children's picturebook of author John Adams, The Dragonfly Door dares to confront serious topics - of loss, death, grieving, and transition. Nym and Lea are two close insect friends, but one day after Nym yells at Lea, Lea disappears. Nym searches everywhere for her missing friend, and can't find her. At last Nym falls asleep, grief-stricken, and finally hears Lea's voice one more time. "'I died and went to this special place,' Lea said, her voice full of love. 'But I didn't want you to leave,' Nym pleaded. 'I'm sorry I yelled.' 'I know you're sorry,' Lea assured her. 'I left because my water nymph body died while I was picking flowers in the reeds, not because you yelled.'" The warm, emotional colors of award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson illustrate this highly recommended picturebook for sharing the bittersweet realities of life with young people.
Jewel's Reading Excellence Review: Helps children understand nature's life cycle.......2007-05-10
John Adams brilliantly invites the reader into the world of Nymphs and Dragonflies to explore the changes that take place when Nym's friend goes to a special place.
When I had lost a family member I had read a wonderful story called, "The Water Bug Story." John Adams adds a fresh approach to this story by focusing on friendship loss and giving a voice to his characters. With the help of Gibson's eye-catching nature illustrations, "The Dragon Fly Door" answers general questions surrounding loss, such as feelings about loss, what happens to the nymph's body when he dies, and how a nymph is transformed into a dragonfly.
Adams creatively normalizes typical friendship rivalry and takes the reader on a nature journey to discover that one chooses to resolve conflict, loss, and changes in different ways. Adams concludes the book with uncomplicated educational facts for the inquisitive science mind.
This is a great educational tool for parents, grandparents or professionals to use to help explain the uncontrollable life cycle changes and loss.

A Message of Hope for Children Who Are Grieving.......2007-02-26
As President of a nonprofit organization that reaches out to those who are grieving, I was very pleased to read a book such as The Dragonfly Door. This book provides a much needed way to offer children (and adults) a message of hope following the death of a loved one.
Children can relate to the playful nature of Nym and Lea who are the two young nymph friends, the sorrow of Nym when Lea dies, and the comforting feeling when when Nym realizes that he will one day see Lea again as a dragonfly, when he too has made his transformation into a dragonfly.
Our nonprofit organization recommends this book so highly that we have decided to make it available for purchase at all of our events.

Beautiful and excellent for all who grieve.......2007-02-18
I received this wonderfully beautiful book on the 8th anniversary of my son's graduation to Heaven ... that evening, I was able to read it with his daughter, who is now 9... I believe she gained another understanding of her Very Own Daddy in a beautiful place that we have not seen just yet ... and though she already knew he is waiting for her, this was another good reminder of that ... I was unaware of the dragonfly's life cycle and was so blessed to see how it seemingly parallels this life and the next. Thank you, John, for a wonderful way to help us all in our continuing journey with grief and the Hope we can have.

helpful for the non-experienced.......2007-03-10
I had no idea what to do with my kids' hair and had never cut hair before. I was afraid to give it a try. This book gave me basic enough information that I could understand it and follow it. What do you know, the hair cuts turned out ok. I know some other reviewers have said this is not for professionals, but I would have been overwhelmed by a professional book. This was simple, to the point, and basic enough for me to follow. Just what I was looking for.
Reprint.......2005-01-09
I have read "How to Simply Cut Hair", and from the Table of Contents and Excerpt viewable on Amazon.com, "How to Simply Cut Hair Even Better" looks like an exact reprint of the first book. If you have one you don't need the other.

This book is not "advanced", and the techniques are not those that professionals use! A disappointment!

Ms. Punches has distilled haircutting to its essentials. Intelligently and logically organized information, quick and easy to digest. The book is aimed at the home haircutter, but can also be a good guide for the barber (like me) who wants to get into women's haircutting, or even the hairdresser who went to a lousy beauty school.

Hair Cutting Book.......2002-06-28
This is a fairly good book, with some very good instruction, but I felt that the person who provided the illustrations could have done a way better job, or could have at least found someone to do better drawings than this. Other than that, a good text.
Book Description
Sometimes the most important things in life are the hardest to talk about. Whether it's the keys to the car or the keys to life, parents and teens need to find ways to talk to each other about tough issues, such as: safe driving; alcohol and drugs; sex; study habits and grades; honesty; schedules and curfews; family chores; self-discipline.
These issues often tear families apart. But talking about them doesn't have to be destructive---or boring. After interviewing hundreds of teens and parents, the father-and-son team of Terry and Sean Paulson have written a reassuring and practical book that helps teens and parents talk together and laugh together about life's tough issues.

Book Description
Interspersed with charts, graphs, and various crossword puzzles, A Book of Noisy Outlaws, Evil Marauders, and Some Other Things . . . features some of today's best authors spinning new tales ranging from the spooky to the strange. George Saunders tells the story of a father who takes caution to dangerous extremes in "Lars Farf, Excessively Fearful Father and Husband." In "ACES by Phone," a small boy finds a cell phone that lets him listen in on the thoughts of dogs, and in "Small Country," Nick Hornby introduces a country too small for a postal system but, unfortunately for one bookish boy, just big enough for a football team. Each story features full-color illustrations by artists including Barry Blitt, Lane Smith, David Heatley, and Marcel Dzama.
The collection includes previously unpublished children's stories from Jonathan Safran Foer (Everything is Illuminated), Nick Hornby (High Fidelity), Neil Gaiman (Sandman), George Saunders (CivilWarLand in Bad Decline), Kelly Link (Stranger Than Fiction), and Jon Scieskza (Stinky Cheese Man). The dust jacket folds into a unique aerogram, which factors into a special contest involving a story written partly by Lemony Snicket, partly by thousands of children.
Customer Reviews:
A great collection of short stories for young readers.......2007-01-15
After hearing Nick Hornby read his short story "Small Country" on NPR, I had to pick up this book. I was not disappointed. The stories are odd, humorous, and a bit-off center, but they are also immensely enjoyable. The themes are geared primarily towards younger readers (stories about parents leaving for Peru, monsters at summer camp, over protective fathers - you get the idea), with a tongue-in-cheek parody about them that is reminiscent of Lemony Snicket (who, in fact, wrote the introduction.)
Most stories are sure to be a hit with the grade 3 - 6 crowd; the final story by Jonathan Safran Foer ("The Sixth Borough") is a bit less kid-friendly, but the collection as a whole is a fun read. Highly recommended for young readers.
great book.......2007-01-08
My 10 year old daughter absolutely loved this book. She was a bit intimidated by the title initially , so I started off reading her the stories. We both were intrigued and read the whole book together. I thought is was so good , when we finished, I gave the book to our school library for other kids to read - my daghter nearly killed me for giving it away!
The scary, the funny, and the just plain weird.......2006-01-11
Take some excellent, renowmed writers, have them write a collection of stories for kids, and this is what you get. An eclectic, fun, sometimes creepy mix of tales that those of all ages are likely to enjoy.
While writers like Nick Hornby and Neil Gaiman contribute, the best effort comes from Kelly Link, in his tale titled, "Monster." Although written for children, this is one of the funniest short stories I've read in quite some time - funny, scary, straightforward in its telling - and it's the highlight of an outstanding collection.
The only thing that keeps me from giving this 5 stars is the fact that there are a couple of weak stories that hurt the overall collection. Still, I'd highly recommend this for readers of any age. You might not like every story, but I guarantee that there will be several that catch your fancy.
sweet.......2005-12-06
The general impression is that it's a collection of stories that the authors would have like to read when they were kids. Some of them may be scary to the announced age group (4-7) but most are just sweet. For the adult many of them will remind the reader how it was to be a kid. And for the kid, this will make them feel vindicated for many injustices they suffer, like the loud mean boy that everybody likes, over-controlling parents, and having to play sports when they really don't want to.
The funniest part was the introduction by Lemony Snicket. I'd like to know how Paul Revere did wrong by him.
Enertaining.......2005-11-04
The collection of stories is a must read for fans of intelligent young adult stories. Even the introduction, by Lemony Snicket, poking fun of books that are more mundane (with a terrific nod to Harry Potter) is a great read. I liked Gaiman's and Hornby's stories.

In this first biography on Mel Allen, perhaps the most famous sports broadcaster in American history, author Borell helps readers relive baseball's glorious radio days.
Customer Reviews:
Mel Allen led a charmed life.......2007-02-26
I judge biographies on whether or not I feel I really know this person by the end of the book. Mr. Borelli's comprehensive tome makes me feel like I spent time with Mel Allen as well as his family members, friends, peers and others from his era. I almost feel like I was there as the author describes Melvin Israel's rise from Alabama to "Gotham" and a Hall of Fame career as the voice of the Yankees. I think it was important to include the people, culture and events which were part of his surroundings and help paint a picture for those too young to remember.
The author's extensive list of sources, the numerous interviews and materials cited, give credibility to a somewhat daunting task. How do you sum up a person's life, especially after he is gone? Mr. Borelli has succeeded in this goal, which appears to have the secondary accomplishment of giving a lifetime Yankee fan the opportunity to delve into one of his hero's lives and meet, share with and learn from those who were close to Mel Allen.
I was not a Yankee fan before reading this book. That has not changed. I am a baseball fan, and I love reading great books about baseball and other sports. I am also a fan of those who work hard to achieve greatness in their field. I am now a fan of Mel Allen.
Insightful Sports fan.......2007-02-10
Borelli's book is to be recommended for the sports fans who want to read more than the ordinary book about a well-known sports personality. He writes well and tells a compelling story of Mel Allen's life from an insider's viewpoint. One would have wished to have had Borelli's book years before, to really appreciate the personality behind the Voice.
He does particularly well when relating the details of Mel's firing by the NY Yankees in 1964. One need go no further than this book to understand what happened to the Voice of the Yankees during this difficult period in Allen's life a well as the lives of his fans who no longer had his golden voice to impart the real feel for the games.
In short, a great book by a really good writer. Let's hope Mr. Borelli writes more books of this kind!
What do you think of these?.......2007-02-02
Borelli's account of Mel Allen's life is a great read. If you are a Yankee fan, Allen is one of those mythical names associated with the franchise. Borelli has a flair for keeping the reader on the edge of the seat waiting for more and he delivers each time. Allen's life reminded me of a true Greek drama; he started meekly, earned success and then went through a period of soul searching and redemption. A true journey that Borelli captures with passion and zeal. Bravo!
Riveting, Comprehensive, and Brilliant!.......2007-02-01
Most of us merely knew Mel Allen by his distinct voice. In this powerful biography, Borelli captures the "man behind the man" that only few knew, but many yearned to meet.
Just as Allen turned the task of announcing a ball game into a work of fine art, Borelli's comprehensive and exhaustive depictions of Allen serve as the perfect tribute to a great man. Indeed, this was the perfect tribute to Allen's life.
The intricacies examined in this book are most impressive -- so much so that I read it a second time. Borelli has successfully taken a very public figure and unveiled facts that were previously unknown, which is ultimately what makes this book a fascinating (and quick) read.
Top-notch work... highest marks!
Fabulous story about a fabulous life.......2007-01-01
Mel Allen was not only the voice of the Yankees: he was the voice of all baseball for three decades, as important a sports icon in his time as John Madden is to younger generations, and as respected a commentator as Marv Albert or Vin Scully. When you thought of baseball (and, as Stephen Borelli assiduously notes, any big-time sporting events), you could hear the soothing calm of Mel's clear, crisp Southern drawl as he effortlessly described at-bat after at-bat. Knowledgeable, charming and precise, Allen was simultaneously the most spontaneous and the most polished of all broadcasters. Nowadays we think little of these qualities in our high-definition, internet world, but at the time, most citizens were radio-bound, and they trusted and loved one man before all his peers, Melvin Allen.
Borelli's research is first-rate and wonderful entertainment, and will appeal both to diehard sports fans and those who love tantalizing narratives. I sat down one July evening after having bought my copy and read the whole thing, cover-to-cover, in four hours (missing dinner, I noticed only later). My wife, who is not overly interested in sports, also read it and greatly enjoyed it. It is a treasure trove of anecdotes, facts, figures, and, most of all, the story of the fantastic voyage of an impoverished Jewish boy from rural Alabama who fought prejudice and ignorance to become the most respected and highly paid sports broadcaster in the world. I loved Mel Allen before I read the book, and already considered him the epitome of announcers and someone whose kind we will never see again. After reading this superb account of his life, his times, and the lasting impact he made on both fans and players, I am even more settled in my opinion. As you will discover, there are hundreds of reasons why, in the words of George Steinbrenner himself, "no man in the history of the Yankees has ever meant more to the Yankees than Mel Allen."

- celebrate God’s plan for women to be godly and sexual
- seek forgiveness for past sexual impurities and move on
- get creative, spice up lovemaking, and increase desire
Marla debunks myths, calls women on their own issues, exposes the joy of sex, and presents hopeful advice that new or veteran brides will gratefully refer to again and again.

What is a godly marriage? According to the Hebrew alphabet word-pictures, it is the union of man and woman with God embedded in its center. This marriage under God, then, joins three personalities and all three function in the couple's sex life. Many people find this shocking at first, but it is a fact that can free a Christian couple to love one another more fully.
Sex can be frustrating to Christian wives in reconciling spiritual and physical needs. However, clergymen such as Rev. Frederick K.C. Price have stated that there is nothing better than married sex, because God is involved. Such professionals feel that godly sex is a miracle that must not deteriorate into an annoying chore or ugly duty over time.
"Is That All He Thinks About?" is a good reference for maintaining excitement and joy in married sex. For a healthy Christian couple, sex should parallel prayer in its regular occurrence. This book helps women see their sexual relationship as nothing trivial, unwanted, or repulsive, but one to cherish. However, while some wives feel that they should satisfy their husband's needs and not their own, this is not optimal. Alternatively, a wife may demand all her needs met first before satisfying her husband's desires. This is also not going to work.
Husband and wife can be mutually satisfied, as well as drawn deeper into the godly marriage bond. A Christian wife can also improve her own skills and attitudes to bring refreshing, joy-filled perspectives to the marriage bed. This, in turn, can bring about pleasant changes in her husband. There is nothing wrong with the wife taking the first step, at least some of the time, if wife and husband are truly partners.
Ms. Taviano shows how to discard the "meet my needs first" attitude, as well as to express female desire assertively. She also teaches that in the presence of past sexual improprieties, wife and husband must forgive each other and themselves and then drop the subject. She gives creative lovemaking suggestions with full instructions that can help newlyweds and those at their 50th Anniversary alike. Couples can then discuss and choose the activities that fit their personalities. In agreement with the author, I would discard the notion of using pornography as a tool for excitement, because it replaces reality with addictive fantasies and inanimate objects.
Ms. Taviano targets the excuse of "no time for sex" head-on. "Too busy" is often an excuse for avoidance and it is better to face the topic of sex for a final resolution. The author describes this cure as a kind of parallel to tithing. Folks often find that after beginning to tithe, they become more organized and actually have more money available for paying bills and recreation. The author believes, further, that when she and her mate began to have sex more regularly, she began to have more time for other tasks and became more productive. It was a double blessing.
God gave humans sex as a gift. As Rev. Price has alluded, it is a communication and ecstasy powerful beyond words. Who would not want that?
Some women have the fear of losing oneself in marriage and becoming only "his wife." However, if God is truly central in marriage, then mates are partners. "Helpmeet" in Hebrew original texts means defender of the husband, not slave to him. English itself changed later to mean "servant," but the Hebrew stayed the same. Discarding the English "update" frees a couple to become Christian partners in marriage and a joyous sex life! Above all, Christian couples should pray together for the health of their sexual relationship, just as they do for prosperity in all other areas.
"Is That All He Thinks About?," by Marla Taviano, is a wonderful manual that can help married women of all ages, while engaged women can study it in preparation for added joy with their new husbands.
Newlyweds, READ.......2007-04-28
As a newlywed, this book allowed me to realize how important sex is to my husband before I developed many of my own misconceptions or annoyances. One of the most promiment things that I learned is that sex in a way, fulfills a man's "emotion needs". If I want my husband to fulfill my emotional needs, being loved on, cuddled etc, then I must first fulfill his needs unselfishly.
I couldn't put this book down. It is a great and Biblical resource to ignite sex within marriage.
Beautiful!.......2007-02-22
This is a beautifully written book that all married women will enjoy! What a refreshing look at relationships!

A "Must Have" Reference for Mental Health Clinicians.......2002-01-25
Dr. Woody has created a remarkable resource for those of us who work with children. Inevitably, important questions arise that can be difficult for the most seasoned clinician to manage. When the subject is sexuality, even the most coordinated tongues get tied. Dr. Woody provides scientifically-based information and guidance, along with case examples, to enliven and support discussions between parents and their children. Dr. Woody's writing style is clear and easy to read. She engages the reader from the outset, inviting them to develop those skills certain to promote strong relationships between parents and children. In this increasingly dangerous world, it is comforting to know there is a resource like How Can We Talk About That? to help. Mental health clinicians now have a reliable resource, both to expand their skill-base, as well as to share with the parents and children in their care. On a cautionary note, if you lend this book out you may not get it back! This book will be a parent's best friend, one we can turn to time and again for assistance.

Everyone should read this.......2005-10-25
If you want to explore the art of conversation - if you want to learn how to have a *real* conversation, this is the book for you. Most "conversations" are simply just one person engaging in a monologue while the other person waits for their turn to do their monologue. I think much of lonliness and misunderstandings in the world today could be eliminated if people actually practiced what is taught in this little book.
What it Is, What it's About.......2001-06-17
I'm reading this book on my way to a conference, a conference where I will give the keynote address and conduct a panel and a workshop. While a lot of what Michael Kahn says seems like plain common sense, it's the putting it into practice that counts. I'll be trying to do just that.
If common sense were always put into practice, we'd call it "common action" instead of common sense. Kahn's examples and propositions are not things to be documented in APA style, but clues to how to act, if you want to have really good, useful conversations that affirm and support you and the person you're talking with. The book is not written for academics, but for people who talk with other people--and would like the results to be more interesting and useful, and less combative.
I'd like to note also, that though it was written before e-mail became a dominant mode of communication for many of us, this book's insights will work well in that environment, and especially on e-lists, where the flow of messages is much like a group conversation.
We've all had conversations that at least might have proceeded in the helpful, healthy ways Kahn suggests. This book is helping me to sort out why my better conversations were better, and learn to make the better ones happen more often. More than that, in less than 200 pages, who can ask?
A new idea to me.......2000-04-01
I came accross this book by accident. I'm not a scholar on conversation, so this book not only opened up a new idea to me, but has inspired me investigate more about the topic of conversation. I feel that because it opened my eyes to how I converse and has helped me at my business, it deserves four stars.
Doesn't get to the point........1998-05-15
My opinion: Reused contemporary ideas about one aspect of good conversation. The author fills his book with far too many examples, and the examples that are given are summarized in points that are almost common-sensical. Supposedly a psychological book focusing on the author's years of research on the subject, but its apparent lack of APA citations downplay that notion. Wishy-washy.
