Jeff's review.......2007-04-03
Great tips throughout the 160 pages. More black and white than color
photos due to historical photo examples and workshop illustrations
more than drawings. Somewhat more stylish and art intensive than
everyday use cover suggests.
For Me - A Change of Pace.......2005-09-04
I've been doing regular woodworking and decoy carving for decades. Since I've gotten this book, I've made two rustic tables. I'm looking forward to trying some other projects soon.
Mack is passionate about this form, and I've also gotten his other book: The Art of Rustic Furniture. If you're at all interested in doing this type of work, each these books are a must-have.
Deceptive title..........2005-06-17
Misled by its title, I was expecting that this book was about making rustic furniture.
However only the last third of the book is about this.
Two thirds of the books (100 p.) consists in a gallery of pictures (with some comments), mostly chairs. Their style is not modern, but not traditional either. I find most to be weird or snob. Actually many look postmodern to me (they may not all be from the author, but from his friends -many being also from New York City like him). These may be a source of inspiration for some, but definitely not what I am looking for.
And that last third of the book, about making things is also quite a deception in itself. It is a collection of shallow articles by other authors, who show projects they make, with a very vague and general talk about the technique they use. One uses tenons and mortises (anyone knowing a bit about conventional woodworking will not learn anything here), and worse, others use nails and even bolts (the last one). I really learned nothing from this. In addition, this is all about dry wood.
I recommend instead Les Smith's Build your own Log Furniture (only a little bit of technique, for dry softwood, but at least something...), and much more a book where you really can learn many things: Drew Langsner's Green Woodworking.
YOU can do it.......2003-08-02
If by chance one of those strange looking pieces of "stick furniture" has ever caught your eye and the price seemed high for your budget than consider making your own. This book is full of useful information. Besides the more elborate high end pieces, that are closer to a work of art , there are many examples of simple pieces. The good news is that YOU can make a piece or even a set of rustic furniture. Although it looks complicated, the twisted wood all connected for a functional piece of furniture is relatively easy to make. I've had this book for years and have used it to make several projects for the backyard. You can begin easy with say, a bird house, trellis or a small stool or table. With more experience and confidence the book will provide you with suggestions and inspiration for more dificult projects to tackle. Essentially once you learn and practice some of the basic techniques you are ready to let your imagination go. If you can visualize it YOU can make it. One of the good things about this type of furniture is that if something goes "wrong" this can actually be "corrected" and may lead to an even more interesting effect. Also the piece does not have to have all one type of wood, you can use the burls and roots for interesting effects and even other non-wood objects can be incorporated . Apparently willow is one of the best woods to use but just about any wood will work to create a piece of furniture; it just may not have the intricate and flexibile weavings of willow. You can use whatever is readily avilable in your area. There are examples of various woods including hickory, driftwood, juniper, cedar and maple. While doing a major spring yard cleaning, in summer, I used California Pepper tree limbs and branches to make a large settee for the backyard. Most anyone can do this, even young people without woodworking experience; children can even participate. I incorporated the help of my 15 year old son to complete this project . He had many good ideas and once he got the hang of it was working on sections without me! It made for a good father and son project. The point here being anyone can make something, including YOU. This book will help you learn the basics and than you can move on with the suggested detailed techniques and projects. Besides the tecnical help the book provides, the outstanding varied examples of rustic furniture with different types of wood, the book also has a section on sources for books , rustic furniture dealers, places to buy old and new tools and many of the furniture makers featured in the book addresses and phone numbers for contacts. Once you get this book you will never look at the old wood pile or take a walk in the woods in the same manner. This is an excellent sourcebook with informative and creative inspiration just waiting to help you get started on your first project. Happy rustic furniture making!
An inspiring book!.......2000-03-28
If you love rustic funiture you need this book. I have several books on the subject and this is by far my favorite. It has lots of great photos of both contemporary and traditional rustic pieces, and many helpful tips and how-tos. I made a willow chair and found the instructions easy to follow, with good descriptions and step-by-step photos. It was a fun project. Daniel Mack makes beautiful furniture and does a great job of sharing his knowledge.

Don't Waste Your Money.......2007-03-23
This book spends very little print space dealing with "how to", and a large amount of space promoting Minwax products, the wide array of power tools required, and how to market your product once it is made. I am a very experienced woodworker. I have all of the recommended tools, and with all of those Minwax sealers, stains and oils. But I am at the same place as a novice as to the fundamentals of selecting wood, debarking, drying, making tenons, drilling accurate mortices, etc. This book was no help whatsoever.
rustic furniture.......2005-07-27
Inspiring ideas for tools and furniture for someone in the coppicing industry in United Kingdom.
Practical book, but too little text.......2005-06-17
This is a practical book for working with dry softwood logs. Among others, it has 15 pages on tools, 35 p. on some basics (joinery, finishes...) and 50 p. on various projects. However this includes some big pictures and a lot of white space, or wasted space (e.g. a check list covering 4 pages, with only 15 items /page, and looking useless and stupid to me, pp. 37-40), so that in the end there is not much text per page in average. Although some traditional tools are exposed, everything in the book is meant to be made with power tools (but one could also use traditional tools).
This book does contain some real, practical teaching to help you build things (unlike a book with a deceptive title, Daniel Mac's Making Rustic Furniture). However, as it has so much white space and so little text, I think that it is definitely not worth its price (maybe it should be sold for about 10 dollars?).
If you want to get something for your money, buy instead Drew Langsner's Green Woodworking.
A good starting place.......2004-11-09
There are few reference works available in this category. Fortunately, this one is a useful, helpful, and clear guide to the art of making log furniture. We have yet to faithfully follow any of the authors' detailed step-by-step plans. The text and pictures were clear enough to enable us to start right off making our own derivative designs. Thanks, guys!
bilding fernitur outta wuud.......2004-09-28
I just received the book and am reading it (and getting lots of good ideas) but the spelling is atrocious!! Haven't you guys heard of EDITORS? Using a Still chainsaw to build an Amour, or use a Skill saw on your dinning table top and letter rip....oy vey.

Customer Reviews:
The book is well worth owning, the title is a bit of a stretch.......2006-08-23
I've got two willow furniture books so far, this one and "Making Bent Willow Furniture" by Brenda & Brian Cameron (Amazon has both), and think this one may just be the better book for the beginner. You don't get as much in the way of furniture design (there are three pieces in the book, the two most likely to be valued are on the cover)but for what you do get there is a lot of detail shown here.
Not as much information on the Willow itself as the Cameron book, the method of construction for the chair is very similar but simplified in some ways which will make it easier for the first time chair builder. Fewer tools are listed, that will help (and give a more rustic appearance) you get started as will a very detailed set of photos covering just about anything you'll need to know.
I'd like a few more details given to such things as using nails and cutting/storing the willow you'll use but think this book is really worth owning. Anything you don't find here the Cameron's probably have in their book but this one will have enough to get a chair done for you. I think I even like Mr. Willow's chair design variation a little bit better.
Great book.......2002-05-06
How anyome can call this book garbage is beyond me. It is extremely helpful if you are serious about making a willow project. The step by step instructions are very helpful especially if you are a beginner. The pictures are clear and very helpful. I would recommend this book above all others and I have them all. Would really like to meet this author and thank him personaly. The only problem I had was finding the ardox nails recommended in the book.....
Great way to delve into making willow furniture.......1999-09-26
Bim Willows "how to" book on making willow furniture is a great place for beginners to look for basic information. Easy to follow, concise, with many clear and helpful photographs make this book worthwhile. It has been a lot of fun!
An easy-to-understand course on how to build a willow chair.......1999-09-24
This book is a simple mini-course that provides explicit directions, through clear photos, for building two willow furniture projects. I can't think of any other treatment that would so clearly teach the contruction techniques involved in making this style of chair. Any reader can be assured that she will be able to create a perfect copy of Bim Willow's chair design through the use of this book. Further exploration of rustic chair building is dependent on the motivation and imagination of the reader, as general concepts of rustic furniture design are not covered. Other titles, (Mack) cover history and design. This book beautifully serves its purpose as a beginners guide to building that first rustic willow chair.
overstuffed garbage.......1999-09-08
this booked is filled with pictures and worthless info. There are much better books, by much better furniture makers. If you want to indulge in someones ego trip read thos book

Book Description
Urban Country Style mixes modern and vintage furnishings with a crisp, clean approach and a touch of the unexpected. Hickman and Gent go beyond the generic idea of an "eclectic mix" and define this popular emerging style by providing a six-element guideline to the style. F.U.S.I.O.N is an acronym around which the chapters are organized: Function, Unexpected, Simple, Integrated, Old and New.

Something cool for everyone.......2007-06-01
This book has a little something for everyone, whether you rent, own or are planning to build. You can be inspired by the creative uses of old and second hand objects for something unexpected and functional. The spaces are all very unique but in a simple and useful sort of way.
good overview for 'urban country ' lovers.......2007-05-22
This is a physically beautiful book with many illustrative pictures. I have been simplifying for about two years and have been moving from the 'country' look toward more of the 'loft' or modern style. This book came at the right time with it's simplified style which complements some of the older furniture. The book has some good ideas but you have to be adventurous to try many of them. I wish they had included more older homes, the majority seemed to be pretty modern. I'm keeping the book and plan to refer to it as I renovate and remodel.
Really love this book.......2007-04-30
I saw this book in a Wash Post review and thoroughly enjoy flipping through it - the photograpy/styling is so crisp and clear and makes it look like you could actually DO this with stuff you alreay have. All the furnishings are really attractive - manage to combine modernity and nostalgia. Simple but not simplistic layout and clear, easy to follow philosophy (or so it seems - we'll see). It encourages you to be bold and I do think confidence is the key to dressing yourself or your house. A bit of moxie goes a long way! Really an attractive book and looks great on your coffee table even if you never get aroudn to styling it!
This book is for EVERYONE!.......2007-04-29
You dont have to be a design expert to read this book. Gent and Hickman have managed to write a book that appeals to the novice as well as the expert. They use language and terminology that the average person will have no problem understanding. The photographs are very descriptive and help the reader to understand the concepts. There are tons of pictures and they're BEAUTIFUL! I have never read a design book that speaks to all ages and tastes. This concept is for today what Shabby Chic was years ago. The book is amazing and I highly recommend it. You may want to pick up two - one for the coffee table and one to dog-ear and get dirty while you're taking it with you while you shop. Trust me, you wont be sorry you did!
Finally, a unique and sleek decorating book with practical advice.......2007-04-28
A wonderful and unique book unlike anything I have seen before. Urban Country Style combines country and urban style but it's more sleek, urban, modern and cool. Beautiful pictures and practical easy to follow advice especially for the "decorating challenged" like myself. I will refer to this book over and over again.

Book Description
In the field of art and antiques, few books survive the test of time to become regarded as "classics." Monroe Fabian's 1978 edition of The Pennsylvania-German Decorated Chest is such a work. With more than two hundred fifty illustrations, this book is a visual feast of decorated chests. Now, more than twenty-five years later, this book still stands as the only significant work to be published on the subject of the Pennsylvania German decorated chest. It is the preeminent encyclopedia of Pennsylvania German blanket chests. Collectors, scholars and curators rely upon its images to identify the accepted standard of decorated chests. Fabian's thoroughness in identifying so many different chests means that readers have a suitable beginning point for comparing examples that they own or may come to view. With this edition, new color photography has been obtained or as many of the original chests as could be identified. Also where recent scholarship has produced new information, attributions and other information has been corrected. With a new foreword and updated photography, including an expanded color section and several new examples, this volume will be of interest to collectors, scholars, and all those who have a love of the richly decorated chests made by the Pennsylvania Germans. 8 1/2" x 11" 250 color and b&w photos
Book Description
A new kind of antique Chinese furniture swept onto the market in the early 1990s. It appealed to people who were sure they did not like Chinese furniture, people who were ready for new ideas about Orientalia, and people who couldn't afford the five- and six-figure prices routinely attached to classical Chinese pieces. This new variety has struck a surprisingly sympathetic chord with Western tastes, and the prices are still surprisingly low. It comes from 18th and 19th century China, the last days of the emperors, and expresses a sense of creative freedom, vigor, and visual elegance. Here are cabinets, tables, chairs, and accessories in various woods and finishes to enhance each room of your home. This book offers the first comprehensive and compelling look at Chinese country furniture from the consumer's point of view. 380 color images, some in room settings, others with great detail, bring the beautiful designs to life. A guide to pricing makes this a useful tool for collectors and dealers alike. Because of a changing political and economic landscape in China, this late-Ching furniture has flooded Western markets, giving retail customers equal footing with collectors and keeping prices reasonable, for now. Because the quality covers a wide range, it takes an informed buyer to navigate between the real and the not-quite-so-real. The information in this beautiful book will give the reader the bearings they need to make the right decisions.

Outstanding Reference.......2007-10-01
With regard to furniture, the McCormick's state: "China gets under your skin." How true that is. Their book provides a wonderful coffee table reference for the collector or designer. The selection of pieces photographed is a fantastic representation of the vernacular furniture and accessories China has to offer. Their book also provides interesting information about the amazing background of these pieces since the Qing period.
Building Appreciation For An Underappreciated Genre.......2007-06-12
This book creates appreciation for the type of Chinese furniture and accessories that are both within financial reach and that work with today's lifestyles. The author has revealed a well kept secret. It's beautiful. It's informative. It's a must read for anyone interested in history and/or the decorative arts. One of the best books of its kind.
disappointing.......2002-05-09
The images are very nice and well photographed, however as a work of scholarship it is flawed. There are a large number of datelines that are so clearly wrong as to question the authors expertise. I won't bore you with a image by image critique but suffice to say that there are better books on the market such as Friends of the House or Kai Yin Lo's book on Vernacular furniture all of which are real works of quality. As for the price guides included in the book, how helpful is it to give a ...[broad] price range... for a piece of furniture without explaining why one will be the lower price the other the more expensive.
Highly recommended and beautifully presented.......2001-01-23
In Chinese Country Antiques: Vernacular Furniture And Accessories, c. 1780-1920, Andrea and Lynde McCormick successfully collaborate to offer a comprehensive, authoritative, reader friendly survey of antiquarian Chinese furniture. Profusely illustrated with hundreds of full color photographs, there are chapters devoted to provenance, finishes, fakes, cabinets, chairs and stools, tables, and accessories. Of special note are the chapters on fakes, and accessories. A highly recommended and beautifully presented introduction to Chinese antiques for the novice collector or student, Chinese Country Antiques is further enhanced with an informative appendix on "Woods" and a brief bibliography for further, more specialized or detailed study.
Good Pictures, Insufficient Content.......2000-11-07
With all the fuss about Ming and early Ching Dynasty antiques, I am glad that someone has finally written a book about furniture from the late Ching Dynasty. At face value, it is a very attractive book indeed, with colourful pictures of antique Chinese furniture and accessories. However, those hoping to learn more about antiques from this book will be sorely disappointed. Not much was written about the history behind the antiques, such as the difference in styles during different times in China's history or even differences in styles between regional furniture. This book was written by people who own an antique business, so what you read is rather like what you would hear should you walk into an antique shop and speak to the shopkeepers. The literature covers only the first 29 pages of the book, and save for the last 2 pages where there is a short discussion on the various kinds of wood, the rest of the 176 page book contains page after page of photographs of furniture and accessories, with no further explainatory notes.
