5 out of 5 stars Incredible source book.......2004-09-03

If you can't find a design you can use for inspiration, you're just not looking hard enough. Not for beginners since the designs are incredibly intricate, but your creativity will wake up and take notice.

4 out of 5 stars Super source book.......2004-06-05

Originally, this was a pair of portfolios of designs in the Art Nouveau period. Art Nouveau was not just twisty flowers, though some people like to stereotype it into those narrow parameters. This is not a how-to book with cutting patterns. It has only the paintings with suggested scale. On a few pages, motifs overlap each other, so you can't just scan and go: you have to build up your idea of the covered areas. One pictorial arched piece is missing the right third, again a challenge to finish it yourself.

The designs range from splendidly romantic conceptions of floral forms to windows a-scamper with squirrels or lizards to some that are distinctly eerie. Bats fly across the moon amidst dead trees. A woman combs her hair before a volcano flowing lava. An octopus and a sea-weed maiden struggle underwater--in combat? in love? Several have fishes and there are even cat designs.

You don't have to see these only as windows. I've converted two to rug designs by taking out the excess black lines of supports or piecing necessary to glass work. You may want to take only one area out of an entire design to render in wood, or do a mosaic version of the whole thing. This is a starting point for the competent craftsman who loves the Art Nouveau energy, not an end product.

3 out of 5 stars Not really Art Nouveau.......2003-02-18

Though some of the designs are nice, most are way too busy for my taste, and I wouldn't really call them Art Nouveau. Quite a few of them look more like Renaissance style stained glass, and some of them look modern (like the sailboat patterns?). It is in color, though, which is nice. Very complicated - definately not for beginning stained glass crafters.

5 out of 5 stars Art Noveau Stained glass-Lyongruen.......1999-12-29

Nice plates with dimensions. Good for projects and for idea's. I highly reccomend it.

Book Description

The designs of Clarice Cliff are among the most striking and collectable ceramics produced in the20th century. Angular and uncompromising, embellished in strident primary colors, they were a sensation when they first appeared in the1920s, capturing the very spirit of the Art Deco movement. Today her teaware is as sought after as it was then, her most collected designs, such as her Bizarre ware, commanding top prices. Now,100 years from her birth in1899, Clarice Cliff: The Art of Bizarre explores the life and work of this fascinating artist. Leonard Griffin, an authority on Cliff, considers her achievements and artistic significance, highlighting these with220 photos of all her major forms and designs. All facets of her life are explored--her motivations, ambitions, and inspiration; her phenomenal success in the1920s and1930s; and her challenge to the art establishment, which she ultimately rejected in favor of a simpler life. Complete with a comprehensive reference section, this is a splendid portrait of one of the finest, most vibrant ceramic artists of this century. Leonard Griffin is the author of Taking Tea with Clarice Cliff and Fantastic Flowers of Clarice Cliff.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite Clarice Cliff book.......2006-03-21

Although this book is 6 years old it remains my favourite of all the Clarice Cliff books and there are now MANY available on her now. It tells Clarice's story thoroughly, with far more archive images than any other book, and great colour pictures of pieces from collectors from all over the world. The author interviewed nearly all the surviving paintresses who worked for her between 1927 and 1964 and this shows in the attention to detail about them, life in the 1930s and individual patterns they painted. There are many quotations from Clarice in the book and these give a "flavour" of her as a person. I'm prompted to write this review for newer collectors or Clarice fans who might be confused over the best book to start with, but in my opinion THIS is it, and at a very good price too. Barry

Sixteen boldly outlined stained glass window designs, derived from motifs originally created by master artisans of the Art Nouveau tradition: florals, vines and leaves, birds, mythical creatures, and more

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars nice ideas and designs, but...........2007-04-04

There are lovely stained glass ideas in this book, but... to use as a coloring exercise, you need to know that you really have to have felt tip pens to make the colours show up. There is a lot of black surrounding the designs and the "transparent" colouring areas are a light gray which cuts down on the brilliancy of any colouring.

4 out of 5 stars Great idea book.......2000-12-29

As a stained glass artist, this book got my creative juices flowing. The pictures are fairly complex, just like the stained glass of the 1920's era, and made me wish I had crayons or markers that could duplicate the textured, swirled, multicolored glass that was used during this time! It's a great starting point for people who'd like to take on more complex glass projects and who want to experiment with color combinations befhorehand.

5 out of 5 stars Receiving kudos for Clarice.......2007-03-28

As a collector of Clarice Cliff, I read almost anything relating to her. Clarice was way ahead of her time. She was an uneducated British girl in the 1920's who through hard work and brilliant ideas became a pioneer in art deco ceramics. Leonard Griffin is a master scholar of Clarice and this book was another one of his carefully reviewed study of her work.
Identifying her teaware as a celebration is absolutely true. Almost 80 years later, her work is more collectible than ever and it is fascinating to read how she evolved her designs and manufacturing ideas into the most beautiful teaware.

      Book Description

The inter-war period was a time of remarkable creativity for the British pottery industry; introducing some of the brightest and most daring designs ever commercially produced. From striking modernist shapes to vibrant floral tea-ware, British ceramics of the 1920s and 1930s embody enthusiasm for `the bright new age'. Art Deco Ceramics tells the story of an era, from the flamboyant excesses of the `Roaring Twenties' to the optimistic `sunshine pottery' of the Depression.

This guide is an introduction to all the major designers and factories, covering famous names such as Clarice Cliff, Susie Cooper, Charlotte Rhead and Keith Murray as well as lesser-known yet equally innovative designers. Providing information on decorative techniques and means to identify and date pieces at a glance, this book will prove an invaluable introductory guide to the interested amateur and collector alike. Being more than a reference work this book looks at inter-war ceramics in context and how they reflect the hopes and aspirations of a bygone age.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT INTRODUCTORY GUIDE!.......2000-05-22

This book is small but sweet!

In Just 40 pages there must be about 100 photos, and all you need to know about the major designers, and also a few of the ones that are less well known. I was impressed. No flouncy language - no hyping Clarice Cliff - but the facts as you want them, and all set in the context of the social change of the period. Obvious that this author comes from a design history background rather than being a collector - stuff is put into context.

Information provided on dating, and also a helpful list of collector club addresses.

If you want to know about Clarice Cliff, Susie Cooper, Charlotte Rhead, Shelley, Keith Murray andmore then this is the colour guide for you.
