Book Description
The Knucklehead motor was faithfully replicated by Tedd Cycle, Inc. and released on January 9, 2002; along with the (Linkert carburetor-intake port) OEM-style Pan cylinder heads in three models: The 1948-'54 (plumber manifold); the 1955-'62 (O-Ring manifold); and the 1963-'65 (external oiler) style.
Our shop manual was written for existing "runners"; and for "builders" of Knuckle & Panhead motorcycles using new, replicated parts. Some topics covered in the step-by-step procedures are not in other OEM Harley manuals, or the excellent Clymer's Panhead manual. When another manual suggest, "replacing the clutch hub liner..." we show you how, and the tools and parts necessary.
Read on through the editorials section for more story on where the Replication adventure is headed. The "motorcycle buying and building public" is still asleep about Knuckleheads. They want to see some pioneers go before them and blaze a trail of standards first. However, there are people out there (like Chris Haynes) that are already building cross-modeled "bobbers" with Knucklehead frames and (early army) XA spring forks (or 1949-'59 Glide forks); fitting upswept shotgun exhaust and KH barrel mufflers. Utilizing the interchangeability of a (1936-1964) 28-year parts run, these mix-and-match possibilities allow a builder to create a unique design, while still using replicated Harley-Davidson components.

Best "Tool" in my tool chest.......2005-01-14
I'll keep this short and to the point. As the title says, this is the best "tool" I have in my tool chest. The information in this book has helped me more times then I can recollect. The book is written from a practical perspective and isn't full of theoretical "how to". It even includes descriptions of how to make some of the special tools you'll need from items you probably have laying around your shop. I can't wait for Vol. 2!
Be a man drive a Pan.......2001-11-23
This book is lacking in some important areas. No carburetors, no transmissions, no brakes. Need to know how to adjust your mousetrap, change springs on a springer, or fix a leak on your hydraulic front end? You won't find it in this book. The topics it does cover are great, easy to understand, and well detailed. The bottom line is I do use this book and it has become a permanent part of my shop library.
Buy this book first.......2001-07-31
I am looking into buying a Pan, and searching for more than anecdotal information. This book is the best source of Pan info I have read so far. It helped me realize that a Pan wasn't the best choice, and that I would need to spend a lot of time wrenching, instead of riding.
I wish they'd write one for Shovelheads!!
The PAN MAN`S BIBLE.......2001-03-07

A marvelous and beautiful pop-up historical work of of art.......1999-01-03
This book is sure to sit on may coffee tables of both those who own and ride Harley's, as well as those who appreciate the beauty of the machine, it's legacy and the creativity in which the book was put together. The Harley logo on the front of the book, when pressed, gives the sound of a Harley engine being started and then fades in the distance. I recommend this book for teenage through senior. By the way, I don't drive a Harley or am connected to the company!

They can't make seats either........2007-09-15
Perhaps Harley is going to publish an after-market book to correct all of the flaws in this book. Probably in chrome. I originally bought the book hoping to do some resarch on historic color schemes for a new bike, and in that quest I found the book to be quite valuable. Beyond that I found it to be curious that the book was a square format and all of Harley's bike are a horizontal format, so that every beauty shot of the bikes is printed across a gutter. You never get to see a bike in full. It's maddening. That being said, the history of the company and the culture is wonderful and inspiring. The shots from the archives are very well done and the tone of voice is very engaging. I just wanted to see the bikes. It's just like Harley's seats, good looking but kind of uncomfortable.
Nothing like a Harley.......2007-09-05
This book is very informative for the avid Harley lover!! This book would help you make an informative decision on which bike fits your lifestyle!! It is a great book to just pick up and flip thru the pages over and over again!!

My son loved this book !.......2007-06-08
My son has been a "biking enthusiast" and rider for years. He is currently rebuilding an old Harley w/restored parts. I'm scared of cycles and just stay away from them, but I even have to admit that this bike is beautiful !! He had a heart atack a few months ago and I ordered the 100 Years of Harley Davidson because I knew he would enjoy it while recouperating. He DEFINITELY did !! He's back at work -- but says he is still picking it up and re-reading or just flipping through it. It is such a nice book !! If you have a "biker" in your life or you are one yourself, either give it for a gift or enjoy it yourself !!
A Must-Read for Bikers!.......2007-01-09
this is a great coffee table book - not too big, not too small. i actually bought this book as a gift for my boss, as he is a huge harley davidson fan and has a fatboy harley himself. he really liked it! the pics. and the history in this book is awesome.
The history of Harley-Davidson, from one of the family.......2005-12-30
William G. Davidson, or as he is affectionatly known, Willie G., gives an insiders view of the history and near demise of an American institution. I drank the Harley Kool-Aide years ago, but it was interesting to get another viewpoint on the Motor Company. The historical pictures are fantastic, especially the old hill climb photos. This is a must have for any Harley owner, and a gotta have for bikers in general. Be forwarned, you will also drink the Kool-Aide if you haven't already!
Ride Free, Willie G.!
Book Description
Allan Girdler, with Photography by David Dewhurst. In 1957 Harley-Davidson bowed to customer pressure and grafted an overhead-valve top end unto the four-cam bottom end of its floundering KL series of middleweight motorcycles. The resulting motorcycle, the Sportster, earned the distinction of being the most iconoclastic motorcycle model ever produced. In continuous production for 44 years and counting, the Sportster long-ago abdicated its original title as the king of high performance motorcycles, yet it remains one of the world's most popular motorcycles, despite using antiquated technology. The elegant simplicity of the Sportster embodies what Robert Persig calls "the a priori motorcycle." That is, when most people close their eyes and conjure up the image of a motorcycle, it is something very similar to a Sportster that immediately springs to mind. It is this raw, essential nature that propels the Sportster to mythic status.'

Gotta love this little book.......2007-08-28
If you love Sportsters, like I do, you will love this book. It is well written, well illustrated, and fun to read. Not the most modern book, the most recent Sportsters are 4 years old now and not in this book by the time it was published, but nonetheless a good history.
Great book on a legend..........2006-10-08
When I was thinking about buying my first HD I did some research both on technical stuff and the history of its models. The model that attracted me the most was the Sportster, which is completing 50 years in 2007. This is a great book to tell us a little about its history and evolution. Since part of the fun in riding a Harley is enjoying its tradition (mechanicallywise you'd be better off riding a Honda), I highly recommend this book.
Not the book I was looking for.......2006-05-09
When I bought the book I was hoping that it would contain some useful information for me as a first time owner of a Harley-Davidson Sportster. I guess I should have done my homework better because this book did not contain anything useful for me apart from some nice pictures of Sportster models thru the years. So it is a nice coffee table book for people to browse through. I guess I should buy the service manual instead so that I can get some useful info if I want to get my hands dirty working on the Sportster :-)
A great chronicle of a model running 50 years.......2005-11-27
This is a nice piece of work, as it chronicles the years leading up to the Sportster, starting with the pre-Sportster years of Model K, then on to the Sportsters themselves, from their inception in 1957 to today's rubber mounted models.
The book has a friendly writing style, written by someone who knows and loves Sportsters like one of the legions of devoted Sportster riders around the world. He includes personal anecdotes, describing his experiences with the various models in an inviting style, as if he were in your living room just talking bikes with you and your friends.
Descriptions of all the major developments and models include candid and unbiased observations from today's perspective, but what really makes this book a ride down memory lane are the quotes from motorcycle magazine reviews from back in the day, so we see the early Ironheads from today's eyes, as well as from the eyes of the riders of its time (funny how back then, no one complained of the excessive vibrations that we hear today of the older bikes, because most bikes were bone rattlers back then).
Dewhurst devotes just about as much attention to the Ironhead era as he does the Evolution, or Blockhead era of today, and augments his writing with a healthy helping of David Dewhursts's photography. Surely people who had Sportsters up through the 80s will wax nostalgic when seeing photos of the old XLR, XLH (the gentleman's tourer), XLCR, and XLX Ironheads, among others. Newer riders will be able to trace how the Sportster evolved into what it is today, and notice how many similarities today's Sportsters still share with the old war horses, while still remaining a potent bike today.
This is a great book for the Sportster enthusiast from any period, and anyone who is interested in motorcycle history. This bike fought back the British bikes up through the 60s until it was overtaken by the new, hot Japanese bikes. The Sportster is no super Sportbike today, but it is still a hot piece of machinery with the elegance and power of a simple muscle bike, and all the presence of a Harley Davidson. It is still a classic looking machine, whose aesthetics are still eagerly sought after today.
If you love sportsters!.......1999-12-15
This is a great book for anyone who loves Sportsters! All the important models are illustrated with multiple photographs in full color from the KH to the modern XL. The book is written with insight and perspective, as well as an unequalled passion for the Harley Davidson Sportster. The author isn't afraid to tell it like it is when it comes to comparing Sporties to their bloated brethren. Fatboys are for fat boys - I'll take my Sporty any day.

Book Description
In the late 1980s, Harley-Davidson beat back an assault by Japanese competitors and engineered a remarkable financial turnaround. But it subsequently faced an even more formidable challenge: maintaining and improving on its success in the absence of an external crisis. To answer this challenge, then-CEO Rich Teerlink, partnering with organizational consultant Lee Ozley, threw out the top-down strategies that had just saved the company and began building a different Harley-one that would be driven not by top management, but by employees at every level. What happened next is the stuff of turnaround legend.
More Than a Motorcycle is the story behind the story of the purposeful transformation of an American icon, as told by the two individuals most deeply involved in that decade-long process. The book chronicles the victories and setbacks along Harley's difficult journey from a traditional "command-and-control" culture to an open, participative learning environment.
Teerlink and Ozley deliver three fundamental messages: people are a company's only sustainable competitive advantage; there is no "quick fix" to effect lasting, beneficial organizational change; and leadership is not a person, but a process to which everyone must contribute. They provide practical, reality-tested prescriptions for critical tasks like developing employee alignment, building structures that support participation, and implementing effective reward programs. Finally, they draw lessons from the Harley experience-lessons about values, trust, and community-that apply broadly to any business.
An against-the-odds story of a business road less traveled, this book encourages today's leaders to look around the next bend-and to give every employee a view of the road from the driver's seat.
Rich Teerlink is the retired Chairman and CEO of Harley-Davidson, Inc., and speaks internationally to corporate and educational institutions. Lee Ozley is an organizational consultant and coach. Both are Corporate Fellows at Auburn University's Graduate School of Business.

More Than a Motorcycle is the story of the purposeful transformation of an American icon. While the business press was celebrating Harley-Davidson's remarkable financial turnaround in the late 1980s, the company's leader, Rich Teerlink, was deeply concerned. He knew that the storied motorcycle maker faced a new and even more formidable challenge: maintaining and improving upon its success in the absence of an external crisis. Partnering with longtime organizational consultant Lee Ozley, Teerlink did something extraordinary: he began building a different Harley. The new Harley would be driven not by its top executives, but by its employees at every level. What happened over the next twelve years is the stuff of turnaround legend. While the media has long celebrated Harley, this candid inside account goes behind the headlines to reveal the highlights and lowlights, the victories and setbacks, and the breakthroughs and dead ends experienced by Teerlink, Ozley, and others as the company engaged in this change effort. Part corporate biography and part memoir of a rare CEO/consultant partnership, the book chronicles Harley's difficult journey from a traditional "command-and-control" culture to an open organization in which employees no longer went along for the ride, but took new levels of responsibility for charting their course.

Innovative thinking.......2002-07-15
Rich Teerlink, retired CEO of Harley Davidson, and Lee Ozley, organizational consultant, have teamed up and written about Harley Davidson's transformation from a hierarchical command and control organization to what they call a "Circle Organization". The book primarily focuses on Harley's organizational change from 1987 to present. Many aspects of the organization are covered in good to great detail. In order to survive and meet growing demand and increasing global competition, Harley Davidson had to transform itself and undergo a radical process of organizational change. Attributing the traditional command and control structure to the American railroad empires of the nineteenth century, Harley sought to make change and break from this traditional form of an organization. As the authors' state, "This is a book about planting seeds and encouraging other people to nurture the seedlings". This book reads like it was written about a start up company that was an unexpected overnight success. Harley really had to toss out all of their old ideas on organizational operations and start from scratch. What is amazing is how this was done without creating animosity from within the organization.
The authors take you through the proposed and enacted plans that helped transform Harley. The Joint Vision Process was formed so that employees on all levels could share the same goals for where they and Harley wanted to be. Both Rich and Lee believe that the people within an organization have the biggest impact on an organization. They shaped their plans with this as the number one factor and this book gives excellent insight on how they implemented their ideas.

A great how-to book for OD practitioners.......2002-02-04
I'm not sure most execs would have the patience to stay with this book, but for change agents, team facilitators, and other large-system OD practitioners, this book contains valuable, comprehensive how-to information.
In true STS style, Ozley (the obvious primary author) does a wonderful job integrating Harley's new systems and methods with the real-folks' feelings and reactions as they go through an extensive organisation and culture change.
More Than a Motorcycle could easily be a companion volume to Marvin Weisbord's classic Productive Workplaces, maybe even its sequel.

Owners necessity.......2007-09-17
This book is a necessity for a Sportster owner. Well written for the owner/mechanic to diagnose and repair the motorcycle.
Brilliant!!.......2007-05-12
This manual is undoubtedly the best service/repair manual available for the XL Sportster 2004-2006.The instructions are clear & concise & the accompanying photographs make the job easy. You don't need to be a mechanic to use this book or to service or repair your Sportster - if you can follow instructions & use a few simple tools (with a few exceptions for the really big jobs!!)you can save a load of money (example: a Harley dealer will charge you £70 - £80 for an oil change, using the book you can do it for the cost of the oil & a new filter & it will take you 45mins!) & derive a lot of satisfaction from doing your own servicing. Buy the book, give the servicing a try, you'll be surprised how easy it is.
Buy the HD service manual insteed.......2007-03-27
This is a fairly good book until you see the HD Service Manual. The official manual is more expensive (about $58), but is much better than the Clymer. Skip the Clymer and save your pennies and buy the HD one.

The Ultimate Book, on The Ultimate Machine.......2002-08-29
Being a Harley enthusiast myself, I appreciate the ancestry of my ride. This book is like a family album...proving the good stock my Duoglide comes from (and helped carry on).
If you do, or ever want to, own a Harley...check out their parentage here.
Pretty as a Picture Book.......2002-05-01
This 100th anniversary edition book is the perfect gift and is pretty as a picture. But if your Harley Davidson rider can read as well as ride check out the Harley Davidson novel THE SECOND COMING OF AGE and the book GROWING UP HD.
Great coffee table book; good for new Harley fans........1998-05-11
Good "starter" book for historical overview of Harley-Davidson motorcycles and the pictures are excellent. Anecdotal inserts are interesting. It explains the Sturgis for the uninitiated. As a new "Harley chick", I have given several as gifts to the Harley buddies who are introducing me to this new world and they have all enjoyed it.
Not definitive, but a good coffee table book.......1997-12-29
The text covers the early years fairly well, and minces no words when it comes to the bad years of the late sixties-early seventies. Contains some interesting comments by noted figures not only in H-D history, but the general motorcycle community as well. All illustrated, of course, with plenty of photos, some very good indeed. Goes on a bit much about the Sturgis gathering, though, and unfortunately cuts off in late 1993, so no coverage of recent developments such as the H-D partnership with Buell, the onslaught of Japanese imitations and American-built copies, etc. All in all, not a bad addition to the enthusiast's shelf and reasonable value for the money.

Harley Davidson Data Book.......2004-05-08
This book has so much miss infomation you don't know what to believe.ie 1966 FLH first year info says fuel shut off is on the lower left tank. It's on the right tank. (the only year it was). There are many omissions like no production totals for 1965 FLH. These are just a few of many mistakes.

No Encyclopedia, This........2007-08-26
I glean from the other 2 reviews that this book lacks veracity; as a Harley neophyte, I would hardly know if the information presented is inaccurate.
My own complaint is that I was hoping for something a little meatier although I found some of the information interesting. I, too, wish there was more about individual models, perhaps more "color" about the idiocyncracies or character of the various bikes. Nor is it comprehensively encyclopedic. I would have expected information on every aspect of these motorcycles, including specs for all the models, etc.
I didn't think this was a "bad" book. It's merely just not exactly a "good" book and could probably be characterized as mediocre. And yes, disappointing.
hardly an encyclopedia.......2003-01-24
You expect an encyclopedia to be accurate and this book is not. Many facts are wrong, motorcycles are misidentified, the yearly model lists have numerous errors.... Here's just a few examples.
Page 185; no FXRS in the 92 model list (I own a 92 FXRS LowRider which I bought new), same page had a pic of a 92 Dyna Daytona, misidentified in the caption as a 91. Page 191; pic of a Softail Standard misidentified as a Springer. Page 92; Evolution engine stated as being produced from 83 throught 98, actually it was 84 through 2000 (a custom FXR was the only model to have the Evo in 2000). If you don't know the facts you can't depend on this book to have them. Don't buy it.
Not so nice to know info?.......2002-08-14
This book is not what I expected from an encyclopedia. What did I expect? Data and pictures of all the different modelyears, changes of the models from one year to the other.
This is not what you get from this book.
It describes some history of HD (nice chapter)and then comes up with a lot of nonsense pages about the "Harley A-Z".
The listing of models through the years is limited to production-numbers and colours for the productionyears.
No nice photo's from the models either, except for the same pictures you get from HD-magazines.
Than a lot of more nonsense information is added to make this a thick, heavy book with not much value.
Think twice before buying. I gave my copy away...
