Book Description

In the 1960s three incendiary ingredientsdeveloping V-8 engine technology, a culture consumed by the need for speed, and 75 million baby boomers entering the auto marketexploded in the form of the factory muscle car. The resulting vehicles, brutal machines unlike any the world had seen before or will ever see again, defined the sex-drugs-and-rock-and-roll generation. This was a generation of people with excessive appetites for hedonistic pleasures, and the cars they drove provided hedonistic pleasure in wretched excess.Muscle: Americas Legendary Performance Cars chronicles this tumultuous period of American history through the primary tool Americans use to define themselves: their automobiles. From the street-racing hot rod culture that emerged following World War II through the new breed of muscle cars emerging from Detroit today, this book brings to life the history of American muscle. Featuring exquisite photography of classic muscle cars by top photographer David Newhardt and a text that pulls no punches, Muscle: Americas Legendary Performance Cars is the definitive muscle car history.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cars of the 60's.......2007-09-10

Excellant pictures. Very good content. Brings back a lot of fond memories. Great edition to the coffee table and helpful with the restoration of my 1968 Firebird convertible

5 out of 5 stars Muscle Car Culture.......2007-08-25

It cannot be overemphasized that this book is different from all the Auto books that have come before. It doesn't only talk about the cars, but puts it in the context of the popular culture of the times. But you can't just flip the pages, you have to dig right in, and start reading to realize this. You can read the whole book, or upon seeing a muscle car you like, just start reading anywhere.

This book is FUN! This book will help you to relive memories. This book will take you back, in a good way. You remember the 60's and 70's, the heady joyful times they were in terms of cars. It tells the big stories of the GTO, Mustang, Charger, Camaro-Firebird , and `Cuda-Challenger. Less popular cars are covered, not in depth-i. e. Ford Falcon, Dodge Coronet, and Chevy Nova.

When reading, I remember what I knew about the cars at the time, but I am given new behind the scenes information. It is like going back to an old hobby, and finding out secrets you never knew. It takes me back to my youth, my teens and twenties, and it's not that easy to get there anymore.

One disagreement I have is the term 'wretched excess'. I don't think we thought of it as wretched excess at the time, we were just having fun. As far as free love, drugs, and of rock'n'roll partying without much limit-it was only later that we learned the consequences, through bitter experience. Yet in a way we knew, but didn't want to know. Isn't that's what late adolescence is all about?

So maybe now we can call it wretched excess, but it is like a married man looking back at his crazy college years. We didn't really know much about the environment, cocaine, marijuana, or STD's then. You have to remember, there weren't any pollution controls on cars in the 60's, and it wasn't really until the 80's they started to get controls that worked without draining the engine.

A guy commented that Ford is under-represented. Even if that is true, the Mustang is over-represented. Yet that is true to the time. Back in the day Ford WAS the rock and roll Mustang. Everything else was your parent's car. All other muscle cars have bit the dust-Mustang the sole survivor, is maybe even better today. My only disappointment, Mercury Cougar isn't covered.

This book is unlike any car book you have read before, it is breaking new ground. It is a good read. It isn't just specs and numbers, this book has heart. You will feel you are getting to know the movers and shakers of the automotive world of the time, as well as getting the popular view.

I thought `if there is one thing I don`t need it`s another muscle-car book`, now it is my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars the best muscle car book.......2007-07-22

the best muscle car book which focusses mostly on the background and the mood of this great car-area with lots of insights

2 out of 5 stars Great photography, but if you are a Ford fan, don't bother.......2007-02-07

The book is very much GM, and to a lesser degree, Mopar-oriented. With a couple exceptions, Ford muscle cars are generally dismissed. Even the 80's Fox body Mustang, generally regarded as the car most responsible for re-igniting the horsepower wars we see today, is given only begrudging recognition.

The photography is great, especially of stripper, dog-dish-hubcapped examples of classic muscle cars.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping Story.......2007-01-13

My father has this book. I'd looked at the beautiful photographs but had never read it. I visited my father over the holidays and forgot to bring a book, so I started reading it and I was hooked. I'm not a muscle-car afficianado, but found this a gripping, well-written, and humorous story about American society. I read the entire book cover to cover, enjoying every page.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Source for Researching American Automobile History!.......1998-12-08

The Author's of this book have done a fantastic job of researching and documenting the early history of the American automobile. I have found this book to be an invaluable reference in researching the history of the automobile stock and bond certificates which I collect.

Even the most obscure and low-key manufacturer is covered. This book is well worth it's price and my only criticism would be...if all other readers used it as much as I do...please publish the next edition in hardcover!!

Book Description

Penske, Shelby, Hall, Gurney, Hill, Ginther, Reventlow, Miles, Cunningham, Krause-these are the men who dominated sports car racing in North America at the start of the 1958 racing season. For the next 16 years, the cars became progressively faster, the competition hotter, and the stakes higher. But what was it really like to thread a factory-sponsored Porsche 917 or Ferrari 512 through the corkscrew at Riverside or to tromp the brake on a factory McLaren at the last possible deep spot of the Canadian Corner at Road America? Few are fortunate to know first-hand, but for the rest, Dave Friedman's photography straps you in the driver's seat. More than 300 photos, many in color, relive the fastest, hottest, most intense racing in American history.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good...but not great.......2007-09-18

As others have mentioned, the photos are great. They do a great job of showing the state and conditions of sports car racing at the time. So if the photos are great, why only three stars?

Because the content beyond that is really light. I'm too young to have seen these cars the first time(36 now) but have seen many of them at vintage events. While pictures of a field full of three different types of Lotus are enjoyable to look at, there's no explanation as to what makes them different. The same is true for all the marques. Also missing is much detail from or about the drivers and teams.

Finally, the book has a decided West Coast bias. I've been to Road Atlanta several times and live a short drive from Road America but found few photos from either of these tracks.

It's not bad, but you'll need some other reference material to fill in the dead air around the great images.

5 out of 5 stars Pro Sports Car Racing in America 1958-1974.......2005-11-29

If you like pictures that show everything about the racing scene in the early 60's Dave has captured the scene. Great photography.

2 out of 5 stars Pro Sports Car Racing in America, 1958/1974.......2002-07-05

Some really good photographs and, at times a good account of the object of same. ABSOLUTELY lacking of what races where run at what time and all of the accompaning data that you would, and have come to expect from a book such as as this.

As such, if you try to correlate the data from other books with the non-existant data from this book.............

Really nothing more than a 'magazine article' which had been given limited pages......

A limited volume, which only leads us to wait, and hope for someone else to do a complete job on this subject.

    Book Description

Over the years, cars have helped to define the experiences and self-perceptions of women in complex and sometimes unexpected ways. When women take the wheel, family structure and public space are reconfigured and re-gendered, creating a context for a literary tradition in which the car has served as a substitute for, an escape from, and an extension of the home, as well as a surrogate mother, a financial safeguard, and a means of self-expression.

Driving Women examines the intersection of American fiction -- primarily but not exclusively by women -- and automobile culture. Deborah Clarke argues that issues critical to twentieth-century American society -- technology, mobility, domesticity, and agency -- are repeatedly articulated through women's relationships with cars. Women writers took surprisingly intense interest in car culture and its import for modern life, as the car, replete with material and symbolic meaning, recast literal and literary female power in the automotive age.

Clarke draws on a wide range of literary works, both canonical and popular, to document women's fascination with cars from many perspectives: historical, psychological, economic, ethnic. Authors discussed include Wharton, Stein, Faulkner, O'Connor, Morrison, Erdrich, Mason, Kingsolver, Lopez, Kadohata, Smiley, Senna, Viramontes, Allison, and Silko. By investigating how cars can function as female space, reflect female identity, and reshape female agency, this engaging study opens up new angles from which to approach fiction by and about women and traces new directions in the intersection of literature, technology, and gender.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2004-05-19

Having been into old Corvettes since the mid 70's, I was excited to see such a large and cohesive collection of actual FACTS which are missing from some of todays Corvette publications. It also makes for good reading, as the stories unfold you are taken to "way back when". Of special note is the feature on #003, the oldest surviving Corvette.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Way to Increase Your Corvette Pleasure!.......2003-10-16

The Corvette turned 50 this year. Yet it seems like this American icon has always been with us.

I belong to that huge majority, people who have always wanted to own a Corvette . . . but never have. I was delighted to see that this book even includes us. The first essay, "Ever Want to Buy a Corvette?," talks about all the "good" reasons why we never did buy one. I found myself there. That whetted my appetite to read about those who took the big step, and learn more about how it affected their lives.

The long and the short is that this book makes me want to own a Corvette more than ever. I hope I decide to act on that long delayed desire soon!

The book features wonderful photographs and artwork of the most gorgeous Corvettes, even showing some that have been over customized. I found my appreciation for the styling growing after I saw how little the design could be improved visually.

The essays come at the subject from every direction -- speed, buying, fixing up, sharing, and the effects on one's marriage. Less you think this is only a man's book, "Lifestyle of a Corvette Widower" will amuse you with the woman's version of the life of a man whose wife owns a 'Vette.

The book is also good on history, including a timeline of key events, tracking down one of the original cars and sharing the letter that saved the Corvette project from being scrapped in the early days.

My favorite essay was Martin Milner's about his days as an actor on "Route 66" when George Maharis and he drove their beautiful new Corvettes off to new adventures every week.

Although I cannot speak as a Corvette owner, I suspect that this book would make a great gift to someone who does indulge in that wonderful status.

    Enjoy!

After you finish this wonderful book, be sure to go out for a drive (even if it's only a test drive) or a Corvette.

4 out of 5 stars This Old Corvette.......2003-06-04

A timely book for the the 50th anniversary of the Corvette. The stories were entertaining and well done. The authors are some of the best known people in the Corvette world and ordinary Corvette owners as well. I have two copies of this book, one for my office and one for my home. I have recomended it to all my Corvette buddies around the country. You will not be disapointed.

4 out of 5 stars New Life for the Done to Death.......2002-02-18

My good review of "Mustang-- America's Favorite Pony Car" may come as a surprise to people how know me. Even for people like me who love old American cars, Mustangs are one of those subjects that's been done to death, along with '55-'57 Chevys, Thunderbirds, and streetrods. I really didn't want to see yet another book on Mustangs, but I found myself unable to put this one down. This is not just another Mustang pep rally. For the first time in years, I found myself learing something about Mustangs. I've seen many California Specials, but I never knew the details of Mustang's High Country Special for 1968 or the evolution of Steve Saleen's amazing post-muscle-era custom performers. Like many, I had passed off the 1970's Pinto-based Mustang IIs as laughable relics of the bad old days, but more than any other chapter, the Mustang II story fascinated me with new and interesting material. For any Mustang enthusiast who's tired of the same old "aren't they wonderful" thing, this book will be a real joy with some subtle humor along the way. Apparently, terrified children were a Mustang option for 1967.

Nestled in the affluent Boston suburb of Brookline, Larz Anderson Park was once the lavish estate of Isabel and Larz Anderson. The Andersons employed Boston's finest architects and builders to design their manor house and French chateau-style carriage house and drew on their world travels to create Japanese, Chinese, and Italianate gardens that were featured in countless newspapers and magazines. Upon Isabel's death in 1948, the estate was bequeathed to the town of Brookline. Larz Anderson Park celebrates the splendor of the Anderson estate and the history of this beloved community park.

As the owner of three Corvettes, I know a bit about Corvettes and their history. This book taught me a great deal more about America's sports car. It is exceptionally well-written, and will be interesting to both the Corvette enthusiast and those who only know that Corvettes mean fun. Randy obviously did a great deal of research for this book, and it shows.

What really sets this book apart from the myriad of others written on this subject is David Newhardt's brilliant photography. A contributing editor to several automotive magazines, David's talent for placing Corvettes in front of unusual backgrounds that complement the Corvettes' lines is unequalled.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever had his or her head turned by a Corvette.

      5 out of 5 stars terrific.......1998-11-11

This was the best book I have ever read in my entire life of 87 years. I am a female and usually I am not taken seriously when showing my curiosity of the best American sports car ever created- The Chevrolet Corvette. I am a diehard fan of this extrodinary automibile, and, I, myself, have a collection of 30. This book satisfied my hunger for Corvette information without all the unneccesary sh*t. I would like to congratulate the author on the creation of an exemplory book on an extrodinary automobile.

      Book Description

In Style hailed Lucinda Lewis's Roadside America as "a ride through the history of the automobile-for those who lust for the open road." Time magazine said that her "elegant images of classic cars magically transport the reader to the intersection of Nostalgia Road and Dream Drive." Now, building on the success of that evocative celebration of America's love affair with the automobile, comes Roadside America: 365 Days-a year's worth of fabulous automobiles from all eras.

Fans of vintage cars will surely find their favorites among the Packards and Cadillacs, woodies and pickups, Edsels and Bel-Airs, Corvettes and Thunderbirds, hot rods and muscle cars-all shown in glorious full color by one of the world's premier automobile photographers. Peppered with quotes from those who traveled the country's fabled roads in the days before interstates and chain restaurants, when the journey took longer but was richer for the experience, this irresistible volume-in the enormously popular format of Abrams' Earth from Above: 365 Days and The Universe: 365 Days-is the ideal gift book for every classic-car enthusiast and anyone interested in America's fabulous and fast-fading roadside culture.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting Mix Of Automobile History & Premium Photography.......2000-12-18

When it comes to the love of automobiles, my hub is somewhat of a road warrior. So, when he purchased this book, I must admit I feigned polite interest. After thumbing through pages of classy, glossy dream vehicles--- I was hooked. This was no ordinary book on cars. This was eye candy with all pedals to the metal.

Photographer Lewis relates that ad agencies would urge her to shoot cars in studio setups. But she always preferred to go on location to wait until the dawn sky "radiated a glow that rolls like warm caramel across a car's sheet metal."

That glow rolls through the pages of this sumptuous photographic history of the American motor car. The book starts with the Model T (costing $850 in 1908) and Henry Ford's vow to "build a car for the great multitude." It picks up speed in the '20s with the birth of the U.S. highway and cruises to our current national love affair with SUVs, "two-ton behemoths that swill fuel like hogs at the trough."

The automobiles themselves will be treat enough for car nuts. For the rest of us there is Lewis's affection for Americana. She shoots a '35 Ford pickup, black with red-rimmed wheels, against the bleakness of Two Guns, Ariz.; a ruby red '59 Cadillac Eldorado convertible in the glitter gulch of Fremont Street in Vegas; and a muscle-car legend, the '64 Pontiac GTO, beneath a towering doughnut sign in L.A.

A great gift for car loving guys & gals on Valentine's Day or any day. Warning: The rumble of the road will be calling you!

5 out of 5 stars The Open Road Comes Alive.......2000-11-20

Lewis captures the epic wonder, strange beauty, and raucous vitality of the American road. Her eye is attracted to the things we often notice, but seldom observe. The text is excellent, offering actual experiences of those who journeyed along these fabled highways in the past. The color photography is mouth-watering and extremely vivid (the neon practically jumps from the page), but the black and white photos are especially haunting. They explore some of the same terrain immortalized by photographers such as Robert Frank and Dorothea Lange. All in all, a splendid book.

5 out of 5 stars Worthwhile time-travel guide; review exerpt from lacar.com.......2000-11-18

...Arranged in chronological order, the seven chapters take us from 1895 through 1999. The pictorial focus is on American iron, largely from the '50s and '60s. Lewis' narration accompanies in a casual tone with dry humor and interesting historical anecdotes, allowing the reader to mentally complete the cross-country journey with ease. I found myself reliving the multiple coast to coast excursions I took in the 1970s and felt the seeds of yet another trip being planted.

...Roadside America is a long-term book. Lucinda Lewis has lovingly recorded historic cars in historic settings with such visual detail that it is impossible to take them all in at one viewing. You will come back time and again. This book evokes all the romance and sense of adventure that early automotive culture has come to mean. Whether you are a fan of beautiful old cars, traveling Americana, automotive culture, or dramatic professional photography of all of the above, Roadside America, The Automobile and the American Dream is for you.

      5 out of 5 stars Roadside A Winner.......2000-10-04

I was wowed by this book. I've seen vintage car books before, but this one is different. First, the photography is a notch above the best I've seen. Lucinda Lewis is a true artist with the camera. Second, this is no ordinary chronicle of automotive history. Instead, the author takes the reader on an imaginary journey across America, much of it on historic Route 66, where each car is photographed (beautifully) in a period setting appropriate for the vehicle. The author loves cars and loves photography, and her passion comes through in the book. Much of the text of the book is about the "roadside experience" and the development of auto travel in America rather than detailed technical descriptions of the vintage cars. Because of that, this is a book you can enjoy as a good read while being dazzled by some astounding photography.
