Book Description

In 1980, a twenty-three-year-old student named Aaron Lansky set out to rescue the world’s abandoned Yiddish books before it was too late. Twenty-five years and one and a half million books later, he’s still in the midst of a great adventure. Filled with poignant and often laugh-out-loud tales from Lansky’s travels across the country as he collected books from older Jewish immigrants—books their own children had no use for— Outwitting History also explores brilliant Yiddish writers and enables us to see how an almost-lost culture is the bridge between the Old World and the future.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Important story, self-important author.......2007-09-24

This desire to hang on to history and heritage is noble and necessary. Bravo to the author and his colleagues. There are things that can be expressed in Yiddish, that when translated, need twice as many English words to convey their meaning. Unfortunately, this book is incorrectly marketed as an adventure---we expect to encounter Indiana Jones! With so much built up anticipation, the reader is left with a "hmmm" instead of a "WOW!" at the end.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Book About Good People.......2007-06-07

This book is the last present I bought my grandfather before he died. I walked into a small bookstore and the owner recommended it to me (you simply cannot get this kind of service from the major book chains). I must have read half the book in a day, before I sent it to him, and got to finish it only after he passed away.

I'm glad I bought this book, he loved it and so did I.

The book tells the story of a graduate student trying to rescue Yiddish books from elimination, and all the characters he meets along the way. The book is easy to read, funny, inspiring, well writing and a page turner. A story of how one man's passion triumph over the odds.

5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2007-02-19

Seller sent book in excellent shape and the story is a great read on preserving history.

3 out of 5 stars would have been a great 30-page essay.......2007-01-01

This is an interesting personal story about a guy doing something everyone else thought was stupid. It would have been a great 30-page essay for the Web, but in the world of commercial publishing a story needs to fit into a 5-page magazine article or be padded out to fill a 300-page book. This, then, is the padded version.

If you read between the lines of the padded version, what you learn is that this guy got books for free from people anxious to clear out their basements. Then he got Steven Spielberg to pay for the books to be digitized and got some other rich folks to give him $7 million so that he could build himself a nice office in central Massachusetts. Now he sells hardcopy reprints of these books, whose authors and publishers have all died, for $53 per copy from his Web site. It is an inspiring story of entrepreneurship perhaps, but given the digital copies and his non-profit organization's mission statement to distribute this material widely, one would rather have expected to see these books available for viewing/searching online.

5 out of 5 stars It's not about the books........2006-10-26

A well-written and amazing story, and it's not about the books.

Aaron Lansky saved Yiddish literature and everything a language and a literature tells us about a people, their culture, and their experiences. Rescuing a million and a half Yiddish books was a Herculean task, but it was a means to an end. Lansky sums it up with one Hebrew word, intentionally untranslated: heneini - here I am (Abraham's response when God called to him.). Yiddish literature was on the verge of extinction, and Lansky assumed responsibility for saving it - heneini.

Read the book and whet your appetite for Yiddish literature (in translation, if necessary).

Book Description

The book Why Didn't I Think of That! includes the passage "If a toy has magic, when people see it they say, 'Oooh! What is that?' . . . It appeals to the kid in everybody." That same kind of magic captures "the kid in everybody" when they pick up Timeless Toys: Classic Toys and the Playmakers Who Created Them.

Timeless Toys represents one of the finest documentaries and displays of modern toys ever written. Author Tim Walsh, a successful toy inventor himself, reveals a world of commerce, toys, and wonder that is equally fun, fascinating, and nostalgic. Readers of every age and background will find it impossible to pick up this book, turn a few pages, and not become spellbound by its insightful stories and the personal memories that the text and 420 brilliantly colored photographs bring forth.

Slinky, Lego, Tonka trucks, Monopoly, Big Wheel, Frisbee, Hula Hoop, Super Ball, Scrabble, Barbie, Radio Flyer Wagons: All of these and many, many more are featured in this fascinating tome, along with the toys' histories, insider profiles, and rare interviews with toy industry icons. It's simply magic!

5 out of 5 stars Play is the Thing........2007-05-30

As someone interested in toys and collecting, I've read lots on the subject. But Tim Walsh still told me things I didn't know. The best part is that someone with no interest in the subject will still find this lavish, inviting coffee table book an enthralling read. The reason is the author, Tim Walsh. Most toy collecting books start with no criteria as to what goes in and what stays out of the book. Tim did. One criterion was that the toy had to be created or invented by an outsider. Thus, a lot of well- known toys already didn't make the cut.

The ones that did have stories a lot better than the title, Timeless Toys, makes them sound. By that I mean that this isn't one of those nostalgic "see how much better these simple toys were than all your overdone gadgetry?" books that abound in collecting circles. You might come to that conclusion, but Tim started somewhere else. When he made his own games, he started asking questions about others. Why is the box like that? Why is this that color? Where did they get that name?

Those are the same questions one asks playing with toys. The cynical answers are that marketing research showed that more people would pick up the package if it were blue, and a computer poll of all co-eds showed they liked the letter "Z". But Tim shows, thank heaven, that those cynical answers are wrong. Lots of great toys came from accidents, and many inventors began with a sense of wonder.

Tim doesn't stop there. Those outsiders need insiders to make a toy. Tim covers all that, including the most famous toy designer, Marvin Glass. As with Andy Warhol, the Glass name covered a design team, and Tim introduces some of the faces behind the scenes. Many toys were inspired by other toys, and Tim traces the roots back. His findings usually don't jibe with the urban legends surrounding their creations, and when there are multiple tales, Tim tells them all.

The most interesting parts to me are some that might be overlooked. They are small sidebars showing the origins of a toy and some of the companies that have made it. Often the company names change because the companies are bought by other firms. A decade ago Tyco was bringing back all the classic toys that ever existed, having bought those companies or their toy molds. Where's Tyco now? I wondered, until Tim revealed it was bought by Mattell.

Tim also tells the origin of many toy companies, including one started by two guys named Matson and Elliot. I've read about Wham-O before, and even interviewed an animator who made Superball commercials, but Tim reveals the secret of how Wham-O made so many great toys. Tim also breaks it all down with by decade timelines. He often shows the box art of toys that were revived in various decades. Toy art in the '50s and '60s, much of it done by comic book artists, is a wonder to behold, while the overdone, throwaway art of today really does look like the result of committees on market research.

The bad news is that this 300 page book is only about 75 toys. But that may be a good thing. Those interested might track down Bill Bruegman's Toys of the Sixties or related volumes to read on. Don't buy The Playmakers, though, because Timeless Toys is the new title of the same book. Tim Walsh convinced me that creative souls, even today, even if by accident, may still have a chance. If toys be the fruit of wonder, play on!

5 out of 5 stars A book on toys that will bring back many memories........2006-12-01

The author has created an excellent book covering the most popular toys of the 20th Century. As you go through this book, you are going to come across many toys you remember from your own lifetime. While some have faded with time, many are still popular and have entertained ever since they first appeared.
The book takes a rather wide view of what a toy is; and includes many games, puzzles, and other things that have entertained young as well as those who are young at heart,if not in years.
The first toy discussed was the Flexible Flyer sled.It brought back a memory to me ,since I had one as a kid.Mine had the straight-runner,and I ran into a gutter grate and punctured my thigh. It seems it happened enough that the runners were rounded. Then, there is the Big Wheel. The kid next door had one and he loved it so much ,he wore completely through the plastic wheels.
Here, you will not only see great pictures of the toy or game ;but also the story behind its being invented and marketed. You will also learn about the person who invented it,details about patents, how many were sold;and lots of other interesting details. It's highly likely that you will find your favorite toy or game covered.
At the back of the book you will find an extensive Bibliography. The book covers many games and puzzles.I have been a long time fan of puzzles and if you are interested in them ,I suggest a search under Jerry Slocum,[...]or The Slocum Puzzle Foundation,Beverly Hills,California.
Overall,a wonderful book that would be interesting to just about anyone who enjoys toys, games or puzzles.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Toys, Geat Design and Much More!.......2006-07-18

As a toy inventor I was surprised when I first saw the book by how beautifully designed it was as well as the extraordinary quality of the photography. On further examination, it greatly surpassed my first impression with its fascinating stories and (truly astonishing), that it got its facts right!

In addition to the fun of seeing all those cool looking toys and taking a nostalgic look back over the last century, it's an historical tribute to American and American immigrant's genius and hard work that has given us all so much pleasure.

treat yourself and your friends to this fine book.

5 out of 5 stars Remembering past joys and toys.......2006-04-08

Just spend a few minutes with this book and you will jump back to the day. Your first quest will be to find the toys you played with. This is extremely easy to do as the book is laid out in chronological order. I enjoyed looking at the pictures and write ups of the toys of my youth. Some I looked for purposely and others became a surprise reminder of things I had forgotten. The simple pleasure of remembering these things was added to by the stories about how the toys came to be, their inventors, and manufacturers. I have enjoyed this book so far, having only had it for a week or so. I imagine it will give me hours of reminiscing. I also want to go through it with my family and friends and let them tell me about their toys. Overall review would be a top quality book that can be enjoyed by children of all ages.

4 out of 5 stars FUN FOR THE CHILD IN ALL OF US.......2006-01-01

A typical child between the ages of two and nine spends 28 minutes each day coloring --- and wears the nub 730 crayons by the time he or she turns 10. Frank Lloyd Wright's son John invented Lincoln Logs. In 1908, Dr. A.. C. Gilbert won a U.S. gold medal at the Olympics --- the same doctor who invented Erector sets. Think of this as timeless trivia that's part of the appeal of Tim Walsh's delightful book. Filled with hundreds of color photos of classic toys as well as archival photos and vintage ads, Timeless Toys demands playtime for the young-at-heart. Your move.

    Book Description

American Southwest Indian artists working in metal, clay, wood, textiles, and paint have proudly left their individual hallmarks on their work-and until now there has not been a comprehensive source for identifying the marks. Barton Wright, the pre-eminent historian, curator, and proponent of these native crafts-people, has filled that void by collecting and organizing these hallmarks into a useful book. Compiled over many years of work with the craftspeople, and with the cooperation of one of their main organizing bodies, the Indian Arts and Crafts Association, Mr. Wright has with this book both made a useful tool for identification and left an important record of the work of these talented people.

The information is alphabetically arranged with important personal data, tribal affiliation, working dates, materials used, and facsimiles of their marks.

This small volume, companion to an exhibit put on by the Mariners' Museum of Newport News, Virginia, brings readers a little closer to understanding the lives of the passengers and crew of Titanic. The numerous photographs include not only portraits of people on board the ship, but snapshots of several artifacts--including Titanic postcards and passenger lists, as well as John Jacob Astor's gold cuff links and the medal given to the crew of the Carpathia for their rescue efforts.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2007-01-20

This book is great for a quick read on the Titanic. The pictures are wonderful and filled with interesting captions. Also, there are brief anecdotes, such as the story behind Mr. Astor's watch. The book discreetly handles such a terrible human tragedy.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Newport News, VA; Mariners Museum!.......2004-10-04

This is one of the best White Star Line Titanic books I own. As a Titaniac I find the pages of this book to be seen many, many times. Having been to the touring exhibit in Norfolk, and the exhibit at The Mariners Museum I appreciated the effort. This would make one want to visit The Orlando, FL musuem instead of those other things like Universal, or Disney World. Any Titanic, Olympic, or Britannic enthusiast would love this book to add to his/her collection.

There isn't much to say about the amazing book exept that throught the words and photos of the passangers' letters, diaries, quotes, tickets, staterooms, clothing, ect.; you get an exellent feeling of who was on the Titanic, not just a group as a whole, but you begin to know them as individuals.
Believe me, this "Fortune" is one exellent investment!!![...]

This book must adorn your bookshelf if you are a serious Titanic fan. The book contains everything from a complete passenger list, tantilizing facts and amazing pictures of artifacts that will make any "Titanic-maniac" feel like they're owning the real thing!

As you read the book, you can't help but feel as though you've been transported back to 1912 and feel a part of history...

This book is definately a keeper, Good Work!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-12-24

If you're a Titanic buff, then this book is a must-have. The pictures of the artifacts and people, and the factoids that go with them make the stories come alive. What really got to me was the entire passenger list stating the names, ages, class, and if they survived.

      4 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2007-04-29

This book can give you a glimpse into the American antique trade. Focusing on three different pieces of furniture, he tells of the story of how it was created, where it's been and why it was up for sale. I enjoyed learning about how people browse and buy things and of the passion some have for a certain style or maker. It's an introspective book with a unique insight. The only criticism is that there were no pictures of the objects mentioned. This was frustrating as it made me curious about them.

5 out of 5 stars Great read, great writer.......2006-11-02

Even if you're not already interested in American antiques, if you enjoy excellent nonfiction writing, try this book. Unlike so many contemporary writers of nonfiction, Freund does not focus this book on himself but on a subject--the world of American antiques. By telling the stories of three different objects, the craftsmen who made them, and the collectors who owned them, Freund brings his readers into a quirky, fascinating world, where the desire for objects shapes people's lives. And if you have any interest in nonfiction writing, this book will give you lessons in the craft from a master writer.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but who no photo of the Willing.......2003-11-07

This is a very good read, which I enjoyed as a woodworker/furniture maker rather than an antique collector/dealer. What befuddles in the extreme is why there was no photo of the Willing card table, I'd have loved to see the carving, as well as the rest of it. So I have to go to the library and dig up a couple of magazine articles (from the New York Times Magazine 1/16/94, for example) just to see it.

      Pam

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful, Entertaining and Informative Book.......2003-06-02

This book is delightful--I've bought 7 copies over the years for friends and family. With its readable style, brilliant characterizations of the eccentric people involved and its nonfiction "plot," it SHOULD have been the next MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL. I suppose its relative lack of success is due to factors in the industry, but it's certainly through no fault of the book's. I heartily recommend it to anyone and everyone, even persons uninterested in antiques--for, while it IS about antiques, it's mostly (as the subtitle suggests) about PEOPLE.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading for ebayers & amazonian sellers!.......2001-06-27

It doesn't matter what you're selling, if you deal with any "objects of desire", this book is worth the read! Although it deals with the world of antique furniture, the principles apply equally as well to art, memorabilia, rare books, and you-name-it! The writer takes what at first appears to be a dry subject, and imbues it with the life and personality and drama that is normally lost in the translation to the printed page. Reads like a Steinbeck novel where the base motives, practiced deceptions, and blatant materialism are showcased side-by-side with the aesthetic beauty and artistic appreciation of a cultured society, to form a microcosm of the world of "objects of desire"!

        Book Description

This book is a comprehensive guide to regional differences in early American furniture. It will assist the collector, dealer, and auctioneer in determining where and when antique furniture was made. The book is unique in that it covers all the major furniture producing regions from the time of the first settlements until American furniture begins to lose its regional character in the first decades of the nineteenth century. The almost 700 illustrations focus on furniture most likely to be seen in the home and marketplace. In addition to many hundreds of illustrations of New England, Middle Atlantic, and Southern pieces, there is a chapter on the regional use of cabinet woods, essays on the furniture of the different regions, and detailed illustrations of regional carving, turning, and construction practices. There is no other book half as useful in determining the who, when, and where of early American furniture. No values.

        4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-03-20

All of Bruce Hershenon's books are worth a dozen times what he sells them for; flawless, stunning reproductions of great movie posters. Buy them ALL!

The one star setback is the tininess of the lobby cards; they deserved better treatment.

        4 out of 5 stars alternate use?.......2003-07-20

I used this book for a slightly different use: I cut out the pictures to use for decoupaging a table. It served its purpose excellently as the pictures were just the right size. My one complaint is that there were too many instances in which the same movie had quite a few posters, each one looking just barely different.

4 out of 5 stars Nicely done book.......2003-02-07

I guess the other reviewer has no concept of art, or probably has no idea these posters are worth thousands of dollars each, at least. If you don't believe me, check out the author's background, as he used to run Christies auctions, as well as his own eBay auctions, to the tune of a lot of money since 1989. So, if you're a movie buff, have an appreciation for this art, and can afford it, then great! If not, go whine somewhere else!

2 out of 5 stars Maybe not a good idea!.......2001-09-04

A collection of movie posters for the well-remembered science
fiction films of 1950 - 1964? And sets of lobby cards to
sweeten the pot? Well, the problem is that most of the
science fiction films from this period were ultra-low budget,
which translates as to "no money for art for posters," and
"no colorizing of stills used as lobby cards." And that
translates further to, "of very little visual interest."

Not that there are not some good posters, but the good ones
are all familiar. THE THING (7) features giant letters carved
apparently out of gobbets of raw flesh! INVASION OF THE BODY
SNATCHERS (38) features tiny images of running pairs of
        people on a half-red, half-yellow background with a
superimposed hand print. The beautifully painted poster for
ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN is not only a fine portrait of the
sultry Allison Hayes, but depicts the largest "squirrel shot"
in the history of urban civilization! But you've seen 'em.

There is so little of real interest here that you'll find
yourself killing time by counting the number of posters that
feature monsters or robots carrying girls in a scandalous state
of undress. Having done that you may find yourself reduced
to looking for posters in which the monsters or robots carry
(or sort of brandish!) boys and adult males (all fully clothed,
        I am happy to say).

If none of this sounds appealing, I suggest you save your money,
and I wish that I had.

        5 out of 5 stars The Yellow Kid-Hully Gee!.......2005-11-24

I have had a long fascination for Richard F.Outcault's seriously strange creation "Mickey Dugan",alias the "Yellow Kid",but only with the publication of this book did I finally see the entire original run of Outcault's cartoons from the New York newspapers.Cited as the first real "comic strip" character, the Kid's initial appearances were in full page color drawings-huge single panels featuring Mickey and his urchin set, denizens of the New York tenements, always engaged in some kind of lively(sometimes illegal)activity-a parody of political meetings, sports, the theater, the doings of freemasons etc.Later Outcault also drew the Kid in the now familiar "strip cartoon" format. The Yellow Kid originally appeared in the sunday comic supplement to Joseph Pulitzer's "New York World" in panels titled "Hogan's Alley".The character soon became a major player in the circulation war between Pulitzer and his brash rival (fresh from California),W.R.Hearst,owner/editor of the "New York Journal",who nabbed Outcault from the "World" just as the Kid was becoming a seriously major craze in 1896(the "World" continued the character by another artist,George Luks). The "Journal" drawings were themselves accompanied by a text story expanding on the cartoon, but often only marginally related to it,and usually rather flatly written-not by Outcault, but most frequently by Edward W.Townsend, creator of the popular tales about Bowery boy man-servant "Chimmie Fadden".
This book under review, was issued originally in 1995,to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Kid's first appearance. It is an invaluable collection,reproducing-for the first time since the 1890s-not only all of Oucault's Kid pages and strips from the "World" and the "Journal",but also a wide selection of his appearances in other parts of the papers in black and white drawings with texts accompanying them(the Kid's diary, adventures abroad, his involvement in the 1898 war with Spain etc).Bill Blackbeard provides an exhaustive detailed commentary on the background to the character, examining his various newspaper appearances and providing a lot of information about the Yellow Kid as an 1890s "celebrity",an advertizing bonanza(Mickey sold everything-he even had his own brand of cigarettes!),stage star, and general all round popular culture phenomenon. The Kid's huge popularity becomes more remarkable when one considers that he only survived as a newspaper cartoon character for about 3 years! My only gripes about Blackbeard's commentaries are that he can sometimes be a little sniffily "pc" in looking back on a very different era,and I would have liked to know more about Outcault the man(but is much known anyway?)-that aside they are excellent, and the book includes a superb bibliography too.The material reproduced so well here is fascinating, especially to anyone who loves the 1890s.In the teeming, chaotic full page cartoons,we dive back into a distant, violent anarchic world-that of the tenement Irish in New York during the "mauve" decade-a place Jacob Riis chronicled in photographs, but here the grimness of that existence is given its own wild, disreputable, but undeniably appealing humor-the slums leering out at us and saying(in their own unique way)-"Say!Life is real-and ain't we somethin'!".
The quality of Outcault's drawing is very high, especially in the "classic" period of 1896/7.Comments from the characters appear everywhere, surrealistically placed on hoardings,on walls and fences and most famously on Mickey Dugan's ochre nightshirt-mostly written in the archaic "hully gee-dis is de main guy" slanguage of 1890's New York icons like Chuck Connors,Steve Brodie and Chimmie Fadden-but Outcault's words transcend their origins-he is a master of clever phrasing when creating the nose thumbing patois of the Yellow Kid's Hogan's Alley and McFadden's Flats.
When he started out,Mickey really was a baby, just a toddler, lurking in some part of the picture-one among many in a recurring cast of tenement dwellers. But gradually he turned into the star, and in the process transformed into a bald, jug eared adolescent, strangely still wearing a baby's nightshirt-grinning knowingly out at the world-the wiseguy who was not only lord in his own slum,at one with its anarchic values and sensibilities, but a sharpee who could transpose them into whichever arena he and his accompanying tenement crowd moved-even when mixing with all manner of foreigners while touring the globe(in the series from 1897 "Round the World with the Yellow Kid").
Richard Outcault soon turned to other comic creations-perhaps the Kid and his pals were basically too disreputable and nihilistic for a man coming to want greater "respectability".Even the Kid's adventures in the "Journal" became tamer, the humor gradually abandoning that savage edge found in cartoons like the violent 1896 "World" panel "What they did to the dog-catcher in Hogan's Alley"-the Kid and his pals became cuter, less dangerous.Outcault's later strip character, the thoroughly middle class "Buster Brown" even eclipsed Mickey Dugan in popularity, and the cartoon lasted far longer than the one about the kid in the yellow nightshirt.Buster's world, his mischief accompanied by little homilies to set everything right, was a far cry from the madcap slum tenements Mickey Dugan and his cohorts sprang from-though the Kid himself did wander inexplicably into "Buster Brown" a few times(reproduced here)-a half remembered phantom from the seemy side of "Boss" Croker's New York.

5 out of 5 stars The Knucklehead History.......2001-05-12

A historical tale (from the factory workmans' point of view) explaining the deco-design of the first 61 cu.in. Knucklehead motor. If you own an original, or you're building a V-Twin (Tedd Cycle,Inc.) Replica Knuckle, you appreciate this book for stoke. A chronicle of club-life in Wisconsin, before the 2nd World War, there are family names repeated in this text (i.e; Kokesh; Knuth; Deckert; Ulicki; Beguhl; and Matheus) connected with Harley-Davidson, that you still hear about today. An insight as to the working conditions at the factory (in the best of times) can be read in this excerpt: "The founders had divided their responsibilities early and stuck with them. They demanded top quality work and usually got it. They desired to build things correctly - they only accepted what they knew was right. For that reason, there weren't many surprises around Harley-Davidson. The atmosphere was predictable, calm, and relaxed. So many guys had worked there all of their lives, that some referred to the company as the "Old Soldiers' Home". It was the last place you'd expect a crisis... -
If you were known around the factory, like Frank Matheus was, they didn't care much where you went or what you saw. That's how Frank saw the prototype Sixty-one Overhead two years before the rest of the world".
As this book illustrates, Wisconsin had their own scene. They didn't need California. This is a darn-good read and once you start building a machine, a re-reader.

        5 out of 5 stars A review of H-D 1930-1941.......2001-01-10

The book gives a refreshing view of incredible machines and what they were truly designed for. The author describes, in depth, how the machines were used for everything from the sublime to the rediculous on a daily basis. He walks the reader into a time that is long gone, dwells there with him (or her) in the legendary Visitors' Room, then races the reader onward to the swamps and backlands that earned the cycles' reputation. He illudes to a peaceful, contented feeling that can only be shared, alone, on a quiet hidden roadway that only the rider knows exists. He shows just how a cycle was meant to be ridden by the men who refined the machine, not the men who designed it. I can't say enough about this book. NOTE: If you believe that a motorcycle is a work of art and should be kept spotless and under glass, don't purchase this book. You'll be sorely disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Olden ways in olden days.......1999-12-17

Historical account of the men and machines of yesteryear. This book is not layed out as a technical or motorcycle repair manual. It's straight forward and addresses the evolution of the Harley Davidson flathead design from it's inception to the end of production. Chronologically laid out it glides you through the changes in attitude and design. A must read for the true enthisiust. A fine job by the author of keeping the subject readable and understandable.

5 out of 5 stars great human perspective........1999-10-13

This books first hand accounts of this pivotal era of harley davidson history make it a must read for any harley nostagia buff. The photos alone are worth the purchase price. Mr Wagner has done a fine job of bringing a bygone era to life.I have enjoyed this volume many times.
