The immense popularity of Neil Gaiman's Sandman series is due in large part to the development of his characters. In The Doll's House, the second book of the Sandman magnum opus, Gaiman continues to build the foundation for the larger story, introducing us to more of the Dream King's family of the Endless.

The Sandman returns to his kingdom of the Dreaming after nearly a century of imprisonment, finding several things out of place; most importantly, an anomaly called a dream vortex has manifested itself in the form of a young girl who unknowingly threatens to rip apart the Dreaming. And there's the smaller matter of a few nightmares having escaped. Among them is Gaiman's creepiest creation: the Corinthian, a serial killer with a miniature set of teeth in each eye socket. Because later volumes concentrate so much on human relationships with Gaiman's signature fair for fantasy and mythology, it is sometimes easy to forget that the Sandman series started out as a horror comic. This book grabs you and doesn't let you forget that so easily. --Jim Pascoe

What will continue in third trade paperback, started here.

After we saw capturing of Morpheus in first volume, it was about time to show us something else. And here Gaiman kicks in. He veawes a tale of dreams and mysteries, he tells a story of growing up and nightmares that lurk beyond. We find modern epic in these pages, filled with interesting characters, dark villany (whichi is somewhat lighter here than in the first paperback) and old fashiond heroes. We are learning of Dreams past, friendship gained and loves lost.

In this volume you'll find one of the best stories that Gaiman ever written, story that spans centuries of lifetime but loses its sense for humanity, for ups and downs of human intelligence, and essential loneliness that rest in the hearts of every sentient being out there.

Maybe somewhat rough on the edges, and even too mundane (grand epics, clashes of entities will follow later up) in its finishing touch, Doll's house still remains one of the best Sandmans ever written.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-09-04

If you're new to Gaiman, you might not be used to his style but this volume is a great accompaniment to Vol I - Preludes & Nocturnes. It follows Rose, who was first introduced in Vol I through uncovering secrets to the whereabouts of her missing brother & meeting long, lost relatives. A truly great graphic novel.

5 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

There are several threads in the Doll's House. Morpheus must clean house as he realises several of his more important servants are missing. He must deal with two of them who have set about creating their own Sandman using a dead man, and his live wife and child. Another is keynote speaker at a serial killers convention.

On a lighter note, Dream and Death are amused by Hob when they find him declaiming he will not die, so Dream offers to meet him for a drink every 100 years to see if he has changed his mind, and realises that they have become friends.

I can't say enough good things about Neil Gaiman. His imagination is unparalelled. Wonderfully written and illustrated.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-03-31

Neil Gaiman has an amazing imagination. I love all of his books that I have read so far. American Gods, Anansi Boys, Neverwhere, and now the Sandman series. Fabulous! The creativity and beautiful visuals never cease to amaze me.

My son used his sister's copy of this book and loved it. He asked for it for Christmas and I bought it and received it so quickly, I was impressed. I can't wait to give it to him. It looks very impressive to me, also.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2004-03-02

The variety of projects in this book and the step-by-step explanations, make it a great resource for beginners and experienced miniature makers.
I would recommend this book to anyone who's interested in making their own dollhouse miniatures!

5 out of 5 stars This is the most wonderful book.......2003-10-07

I made myself a miniature drugstore since I am a pharmacist and I had trouble finding things like mortars and cylinders. Thanks to this book I managed to make the most beautiful look-alike mortars with pestles and all, also a little turn-of-the-century (last century, of course) telephone. The directions are precise and you can really get what you are looking for (and I had never touched polymer clay in my life!)

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!.......2002-11-30

This book is so full of good ideas for creating items in perfect scale for a dollhouse that I don't know where to start.

How to make your own tools and formers, making dishes and pots that are more realistically thin-walled than the commercially-available items, mimicking china, a ladies' vanity set, a desk set, baskets, metal, wood, flatware, foods, fireplace tools - even the kitchen sink! Way too many different items to name them all. If I was to be forced to give up all my dollhouse books but one, this would be the one I'd keep.

Excellent intro to using the clays - basic information. Trouble-shooting tips along the way.

And her videos are fabulous, too. :-)

5 out of 5 stars Making Doll Furniture in Wood.......2007-06-11

Great book! I bought it for my son-in-law--he loved it.

4 out of 5 stars Doll furniture.......2007-01-04

An excellent book with good projects. So far I've only built the armoire, but have others in mind. I did discover minor discrepancies in the directions. Cuts did not agree with what pictures showed in the construction. Trying to find all the different thicknesses of woods specified was difficult if you do not have access to a thickness planer or sander. There is no problem that can't be overcome with a little ingenuity.

1 out of 5 stars NOT scaled for 18" dolls.......2006-07-08

How disappointing! I bought this book for my daughter's 9th Birthday. Her dad is going to make her American Girl dolls some furniture & I thought this would be the perfect guide. WRONG! The armoire is only 6" deep. The American Girl clothes hangers are 6 1/4" wide. Tell me, how is that going to work? The doors won't even be able to close! Thankfully my hubby is a skilled woodworker & can expand the dimensions, but if he is going to have to come up with his own pattern this book would have best been left on the shelf. We are very disappointed. My brother-in-law is making the picnic table & my niece told me that they were surprised & how small it is looking. Seems like more than one project is not quite up to the 18" par. Think twice before buying this one or at least find one to look at in person before hand.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-02-25

I really loved this book. My girls wanted furniture for their dolls, but Pleasant Company Products were out of my budget. Using this book, my daughters and I were able to create the simple pieces.

My older daughter designed a bedroom suite. We painted it blue with a cascade of morning glories. Flower painting is not one of my talents, so we used rub ons from the craft store. The bed was easy to build, the armoire was challenging. We turned the chest over to Grandpa to finish. I was beyond my skills.

My younger daughter wanted a dining room suite for her tea parties. The table and chairs were fine, but once again we requested Grandpa's assistance to turn an armoire into a china hutch. We painted the furniture a lovely yellow with sunflower transfers. Both of my girls love it.

In closing, the beds, tables, and chairs were fine for a beginner. If you are attempting any of the case-goods, you might need a grandpa too.

I don't have a lot of tools. My local store (the orange one) cut the wood to size for me, so we just needed to assemble it, sand it, etc. The first cut was free, and there was a nominal charge for the other cuts. The sweet gentleman who helped us liked the book. He is a grandpa, and is going to buy the book too.

I wish the case-good projects were a little easier. I also wish there were simple patterns for bed coverings and chair pillows. I am an experienced seamstress, but others may benefit from this in the next edition.

4 out of 5 stars good book but----.......2006-02-08

This is not a book for beginning wood workers.
Need a lot of different tools.

I read this book to my son on his first night in a big boy bed. He likes the book and it seemed to help the transition.

5 out of 5 stars Big Bed.......2006-11-10

This book helped my daughter with her switch to a toddler bed (she sometimes takes the book to bed with her, as well as her stuffed Elmo doll). I especially like the page that shows both the crib and the bed in the same room, which is the case in her room.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-04-25

This is a great book, my daughter loves Elmo and could easily relate to the short story. I purchased this book because she is now 2 and we plan to transition her to a big bed soon. I think this book will help and she enjoys the story. Book allows for a lot of room to add to the story to explain to your child what they are going to feel and that it is OK.

5 out of 5 stars The World of Pooh Review.......2007-06-04

I think that "The World of Pooh" was a wonderful book. I especially liked it because I love Winne the Pooh. He is so funny, and with his friends by his side they can do anything. One of my favorite parts is the part where Pooh gets stuck in Rabbit's Rabbit Hole. And when everyone throws a party for Pooh and Eeyore thinks the party is for him. The World of Pooh is a great book and it is funny as well. I could not put the book down. It is just simply amazing. Piglet and Winnie the Pooh are best of friends.

5 out of 5 stars Winnie the Pooh.......2007-03-29

I love this book. Written well, the drawings are great, I takes me back to a wonderful place to be.

For the Gopher fans, Gopher is not in this, he came later in the tv shows.

If you have a kid, a grandkid, a neighbor kid, or are considering getting any of those, you should buy this book.

Get a copy to keep in the car in case you are away from the main copy at home. It is a truly great book, and you will never regret purchasing it for a single second.

5 out of 5 stars An Escape From the Real World -- (written by my sister)........2004-08-25

This book is good for kids and adults. It is a great way to escape from the daily depressions in our world news. Unlike other books, it provides a fun, innocent adventure that still has the appeal to people of all ages. After a hard day, this book allows you to forget all bad - there is no evil, there is no wrong. highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Illustrated in color and black & white by E.H. Shepard.......2000-10-07

The World of Pooh is better read aloud. Milne's characters are charming and lovable. Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends are alive in this book every time I read it, and Shepard's illustrations are so pleasing. I've read these stories so many times and still each time I can hardly wait to find out what adventures Pooh and his friends will have.

5 out of 5 stars Great little Book.......2006-02-14

I really like this book, the pictures are lovely and the patterns are very clear and easy to follow. I'm fairly new to quilting and found this book very inspiring . The thought of trying a small quilt for your first attempt at quilting is not as daunting as a full size one,and this book has some great ideas.

5 out of 5 stars It one of my favorites.......2005-11-04

I love this book and have made the quilts time after time. I do think the seams in the star points get bulkey so I trim away the excess fabric even though it's not described in the book. Its a must have if you like or love little quilts.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book ! Wonderful folkart designs........2003-01-31

I think all quilters should own this book. The directions are easy and include both rotary and template patterns. The pictures of the finished designs are vibrant and beautiful. I taught a beginning quilting class and we used this as our "textbook". Many of the quilts featured can be completed in just a few hours. Also, my favorite part of the book is how the quilts are shown on display. These pictures offer great decorating ideas.

3 out of 5 stars Nice quilt book.......2002-11-14

This is a nice quilt book with good instructions and lots of pictures. I did find however that after the first few pages you were looking at the same quilts over and over, only done in different colour schemes. There are still some excellent patterns and instructions. This book is very inspiring as well. Any room filled up with that many quilts is bound to feel at home.

5 out of 5 stars A great first quilting book.......2000-04-15

This was the first quilt book I ever bought and dozens of books later, I still think it is one of the best I own. The authors make quilting fun, not intimidating, and provide instructions so clear and simple that a child could follow them. Better yet, their style is very distinctive--elegantly simple, with beautiful color choices, and lots of pictures showing how to use the quilts to decorate your home. If you long to see what quilting is about, but don't quite trust your skills or taste, try "Little Quilts." You will learn confidence as well as skills...and everyone will love your quilt.

Its conceit involves a botanist, Christine Newkirk, who has discovered five tiny houses on a magical island, all made from natural materials on a perfect fairy scale—the houses are no more than 18 inches high, beds are 2 x 3 inches, shoes are 1 inch long. She documents her finds in a field diary she is keeping for her granddaughter.

The woodland cottage is filled with bent twig furniture. The Japanese house displays bamboo slippers outside the door, and the beach house has a minute bath tiled with seashells. Each spread is filled with photos and drawings of these tiny objects, all identified with their botanical names.

To leaf through these pages is to enter another world and dwell in it—the world of fantasy that has fascinated people through the ages.

grab your hot cocoa and snuggle up with this book and your favorite blankie. i'm not a faerie fanatic but could not resist this book. the level of creativity shown here is overwhelming and you will find yourself 'ooooing' and 'aaaahing' and giggling at the turn of every page. lovely, lovely book.

oh, and if you're a faerie, these two ladies are the ones you want if you're doing any redecorating.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent primer for learning to 'SEE'.......2007-02-17

I bought this book for my four year old daughter, and while perspective is not a skill she's yet mastered enough to fully appreciate what she's looking at, she already adores it. This is a book that will keep on giving. It's as whimsical as you would expect, but it also teaches something to the reader, very subtly, about having the eye of an artist. It's a primer for creativity, a lesson in appreciating beauty in the world around you, and it does all this ever so charmingly.

A must-have for the creative type's library.

Excellent book for the fairy lovers and craft people like me

5 out of 5 stars For All Who Love Tiny Things.......2005-09-29

Remember The Borrowers or Miss Bianca or A Cricket in Times Square? Anyone who loved those childhood classics will fall in love with this book. The concept of little folk creating a home with found objects is so intriguing.
The authors feature as observers in this book which combines color photos, hand lettered text and sketchbook-like notes. It reminds me a bit of Gnomes which was such a hit 20 years ago or even the artwork in the Edwardian Lady's Sketchbook.
I read in our local paper about a family that recreated some of the scenes from this book in their own garden. The children loved gardening in miniature and finding small things to put in the fairy house. What a fun idea.

5 out of 5 stars For fans of the wee folk.......2005-09-14

This is a very charming book for fairy fans as well as gardeners. The story is told from the point of view of the writer's grandmother and is a lovely story to read to a child or grandchild. I enjoyed it very much.

4 out of 5 stars We liked it!.......2007-01-10

I bought this for my 7 year-old daughter for Christmas. She really liked the dolls, and we thought the backgrounds and the pockets for the dolls were great. The only problem is that even though the dolls are punch-outs, the clothes have to be cut out very precisely with scissors, so she needed a lot of help with that.

2 out of 5 stars Need to cut out.......2006-09-04

I'm not sure why the description says "easy to remove" clothes, because I had to cut everything except the dolls out. Maybe they meant easy to remove from the dolls, or maybe I just got a bad lot! But I had no idea I was going to have to cut everything out in order to use it! My hand is hurting! It's a cute set but also a little flimsy (while punching out the dolls a couple of them tore on the tabs).

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun.......2006-01-06

I gave this to my granddaughter on her 5th birthday. Her mother had already been reading her the primary Little House books. She was a big fan of them so she was thrilled to get the paper dolls so she could act out some of the stories she had been hearing.

This probably wouldn't be much fun for a kid who had not heard the Little House stories or a kid who has no imagination. But for my granddaughter, it was the perfect gift!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Little Girl Play Day.......2000-02-19

The Big Woods Collection of My Book of Little House Paper Dolls is a charming and endearing set of paper dolls and props. You can either be inside the log cabin or outdoors in view of it. Either way, it will provide an afternoon of delight for any little girl

This pop-up dollhouse book is unique in so many ways. It's a history book, it's a pop-up book, it's a "find Waldo-like" book, and it's a book you'll want to keep forever. No matter your age, if you love dollhouses you'll love this book.

5 out of 5 stars A bit of magic..........2007-03-15

The Enchanted Doll's House book was exactly that, enchanting. Each page held a little bit of magic that I relished with childish wonder and I'm 30. I bought it as a gift, but liked it so much after looking through it that I kept it. The book is very detailed and brilliantly colored. The dollhouses in the book are fascinating and everyone who has seen the book so far thinks it is wonderful.
