Book Description

"This is the best book about music I've read in years, and a gripping piece of social history."-Brian Eno

When Muddy Waters came to London at the start of the 1960s, a kid from Boston called Joe Boyd was his tour manager; when Dylan went electric at the Newport Festival, Joe Boyd was plugging in his guitar; when the summer of love got going, Joe Boyd was running UFO, the coolest club in London; when a bunch of club regulars called Pink Floyd recorded their first single, Joe Boyd was the producer; when a young songwriter named Nick Drake wanted to give his demo tape to someone, he chose Joe Boyd.

More than any previous sixties music autobiography, Joe Boyd's White Bicycles offers the real story of what it was like to be there at the time. As well as the sixties heavy-hitters, this book also offers wonderfully vivid portraits of a whole host of other musicians: everyone from the great jazzman Coleman Hawkins to the folk diva Sandy Denny, Lonnie Johnson to Eric Clapton, Sister Rosetta Tharpe to Fairport Convention.

Record and film producer Joe Boyd was born in Boston in 1942 and graduated from Harvard in 1964. He went on to produce Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, R.E.M., and many others. He produced the documentary Jimi Hendrix and the film Scandal. In 1980 he started Hannibal Records and ran it for twenty years. He lives in London.

2 out of 5 stars Very slow and tiring read.......2007-08-31

This has got to be the most boring book about the music business I've ever read. I really tried to make myself believe it was going to be a true page turner, but it wasn't. The only reason I continued to turn the page is because, well... I'd paid for the book! I'm not the biggest fan of folk music, but I do like it and I love the blues, but this book made me dislike both genres (while I was reading, mind you). Mr. Boyd had such a long and fulfilling career in the music business, but the way he told the story was just plain boring. I've read many biographies on this business and have read some real bizarre stuff, but this book was quite tame. Don't get me wrong, I was GLAD that it was tame. I was quite impressed with Mr. Boyd's self-control and his professionalism. He sounds like a total "stand-up guy." But boy, does he tell a boring story. I usually pass my books on to friends so that they we can converse on the book, it's characters, the author, and so on. I must admit, when I FINALLY finished this book, I promptly threw it in the trash. I will give Mr. Boyd one other thing, I was so happy that he made mention of all the blues greats that have graced stages and auditoriums worldwide. That in itself was very much worth this book purchase, but that's about it.

3 out of 5 stars "Matter of Fact".......2007-08-20

Woody Allen made a film called "Zelig" about a little guy who found his way into all the significant events of the 20th Century.

Well, record producer Joe Boyd's life in the 60's was kind of like that. He was all over the place, at the Newport Festivals (both jazz and folk), touring with bluesmen through Europe, and finally at the epicenter of both the British psychedelic and English Folk Rock scenes.

With all that material to draw from, you would think that this book would be a regular psychedelic sundae, vibrating like a day-glo art poster. Nope. It's just a recounting of Joe's ups and downs in the music business. There are nice reminiscences about Sandy Denny and Nick Drake, and Joe drops some little known facts about his resume, such as his involvement in the Eric Clapton/Steve Winwood "Powerhouse" recordings, and his production of Pink Floyd's "Arnold Layne"--plus his notable failures, such as missing out on opportunities to sign Procol Harum, or to profit from the Abba catalogue.

But, Joe is primarily known for his involvement with Folk-Rock, and he doesn't really pour forth with details, here. What about "Liege and Lief", generally called the greatest British folk-rock album of all time? What about Vashti Bunyan, a cult artist in her own right? She gets about one paragraph. And what about Linda (Peters) Thompson? Joe lets it drop that he was in an intimate relationship with her, yet she merits only a sentence or two.

This book isn't badly written, but it doesn't really give you a great picture of the music. It could have been much better. People who are curious about the time would be better served checking out the music. I guess a CD sampler of Joe's productions, also called "White Bicycles", is available. Otherwise, there is the great "Nuggets II" box set, which I recommend without reservation.

5 out of 5 stars What a trip! And I wasn't even born yet when most of it happened!.......2007-08-10

As a musician and general music junkie, I'd rate this as a must have. Joe Boyd is just as important to learn from as those blues and jazz bands he resurrected in the last 50s and early 60s. I also sensed the sadness and reverence he had towards Nick Drake, the sad honesty about Sandy Denny, as well as rejoicing in the still flourishing career of Richard Thompson, all of which are influences of mine.

I wonder if he has ever been to the Philadelphia Folk Festival.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat interesting, ultimately disappointing.......2007-07-22

As previous reviewers said, I "couldn't NOT read this book" and "devour" it with the special anticipation of having seen the words 'Produced by Joe Boyd' on so many of my cherished album covers. However, though it contains a few new facts about the artists and some insight regarding the music business only an insider would know, the book was a disappointment. As earlier reviewers here have stated, it's too short - with not enough information about the actual sessions and music-making itself. The text also seems to be missing something - perhaps over-edited? Perhaps shortened for some reason at the last minute? And some of the potentially fascinating little stories he relates are left dangling in space. The subtitle of the book is 'Making Music in the 1960s', but there's very little of that in the narrative. I wanted to find out what is was like to observe luminaries such as Nick Drake at work in the studio. I wanted to be a fly on the wall at a Fairport Convention session with Sandy Denny & Richard Thompson. What made the Incredible String Band tick? How did these artists get their signature SOUNDS? I was looking for a window on Joe Boyd's working world; What we get are mildly interesting and too-quick glances of the surface of '60s-'70s music.

4 out of 5 stars Sight Unseen, Sound Unheard.......2007-07-17

In the mid to late 60s, there were so many unheralded masterpieces, even the recording companies couldn't keep up with them. Most were relegated to
the old school, family-owned record store. Illinois Speed Press, The United States of America and Joe Boyd and the Field Hippies were a few of them. Some of their members went on to nominal fame in other groups, but they mostly languished in the bargain bins. If this is the same Joe Boyd,
and his way with prose is as adroit as his way with music, you are in
for an incredibly interesting ride. I haven't read the book yet, but I
haven't been moved to make a purchase of anything sight unseen or sound
unheard since I read an article in Hit Parader about CSN three months before their debut album was released in 1969.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous score.......2007-09-06

This is GREAT! So happy this was finally released. My husband and I are both musicians. Can't tell you how marvelous it is to watch this score while listening to the Beatles' performances.

3 out of 5 stars Complete Beatles Song Library.......2007-09-01

If you love the Beatles and love music - this is a must have. It is beautiful looking in hard cover and slides into a nice protective sleeve. The print is small and so tough to read. A way around this would be to provide a CD or download capabiltiy with a password so a purchaser could print out a particular song. I would have rated this a 5 with this included. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to own this -- plus I think its a pretty good value, but I would pay $10 more to be able to download the music or have a companion CD/DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing. Binding easy to fix........2007-08-23

As previous reviewers have said, the transcriptions aren't perfect, but the errors are minor enough that anyone with enough of an ear to notice them can fix them. For the amount that this collection is an absolutely awe-inspiring piece of work, I don't think that a few minor errors should count against it.

Many reviewers have had issues with the binding being too thick and the book too big and cumbersome to balance on a music stand. I fixed this problem by simply taking the book to a copy shop and having them rebind it for me into three volumes. It only cost me ten dollars and it has made my life infinitely easier.

5 out of 5 stars Small type no problem.......2007-07-30

An excellent resource for musicians. The small type mentioned in numerous reviews is not that small and anyone with access to a copier can enlarge the image of any song you happen to be working on. I was impressed that even "Revolution #9" was scored. A very good companion volume to "The Compleat Beatles" that I purchased back in 1982.

5 out of 5 stars Beginners to Cover Bands.......2007-07-18

I've been trying to teach myself guitar for over two years now. Being in my forties, I don't have the time (or talent)to sit with a CD/MP3 player and try to figure a song out. I've purchased other song books, chordbooks, easy play books, etc... Each one falls short in providing not only accurate information, but enough information for a relative beginner to play. This book provides, in my opinion, all the necessary information for a beginner, expert, or cover band to play. Notation, tab, chords, chord fingering and strumming patterns. To date, this is the only book I would recommend.

Book Description

In the early 1970s, when he was just 20 years old, David Cassidy achieved the sort of teen idol fame that is rarely seen. He was mobbed everywhere he went. His clothes were regularly ripped off by adoring fans. He sold records the world over. He was bigger than Elvis. And all thanks to a hit TV show called The Partridge Family. David Cassiday, in his own words, gives a brutally frank account of those mindblowing days of stardom in which being David Cassidy played second fiddle to being Keith Partridge. Including stories of sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll that explode the myth of Cassidy as squeaky clean, it is also the story of how to keep on living life and loving yourself when the fickle fans fall away. David Cassidy is also the author of C'mon, Get Happy: Fear and Loathing on the Partridge Family Bus.

5 out of 5 stars New DC Bio Proves Talent Will Survive Forever!.......2007-10-10

Could It Be Forever?: My Story
Despite much adversity in his life and being a labeled a "teen idol" David Cassidy tells his readers of his amazing journey and how true talent survives.

If you're already a fan that got the 1st autobiography, "C'mon Get Happy," let me tell you that I enjoyed this one MUCH MORE than that one! In the first book, I felt almost like all the sexual stuff came off like "bragging." I didn't feel that this time around as even though a lot of it was the same, it just seemed more "balanced."

I really enjoyed the comments put in by family members, friends, and other artists. It helped add a new detention to the book. Being able to see David through others eyes. Of course, being a HUGE fan of DC's RCA records, I was very happy to be able to read more about the making of those and getting to read comments by Gerry Beckley, Bruce Johnson, etc. I was pleased that DC acknowledged that had he toured the US these albums probably would have done at least fairly well here. So to me, it's rather sad he didn't. I think it would've given him more credibility if he'd been able to have at least one hit record that was his own right after the P.F. went off the air. It's cool that he mentioned many of his long time fans (like me) have commented on how much they enjoyed them. Also that they were the "real David" as he had real control over those LP's. Opposed to having to sing pop for a TV show that was very well-crafted but just wasn't what he was into at that time of his life.

It was also interesting reading about all the other POST-PF things that happened since the 1st book was written. I actually enjoyed the "environmental" and "anti-war" messages in "Time," even though I never got to see the whole play. I've heard it on cassette tapes and some of the songs were lovely too. So it's a shame DC didn't enjoy it very much. Although I agree with DC that "Blood Brothers" was by far the best vehicle in his career. It was just joyful to read about his becoming so close to Shaun & Petula, etc.

I never realized DC was in such pain with his foot while doing EFX. He hid it very well. I knew he's hurt it and his back but just never knew the extent of the damage. He really IS a real trouper! Of course, I knew that when I 1st met him in SD back in 1981 and he was carrying an ice pack for his broken foot so that he could still perform doing heavy tap dancing in "Little Johnny Jones."

Also fascinating was how David mentioned being separated from Sue for a while when in Vegas. It gave me a new perspective about some things from that time.

The trip DC took with his brothers was really fun to read. It's so nice they're all so close. Also the comments about Katie and how proud he is of her now.

I loved the ending message by Beau. It saw simply lovely - and DC's right that THAT is what life is really all about! As the Beatles sang, "In the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make."

Anyway, if you're a DC fan or even if you're not that big a fan, I think his latest autobiography is just a really fascinating and enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars Must read for all fans.......2007-10-10

I have been a David Cassidy fan for over 30 years and this is a must read book. He opens his heart and his life for the world to see. The image we all saw on TV was truly just an image. He was truly acting in front of those cameras. His struggles were hidden from the public very well. It is amazing he is the man he is today after everything he went through. I am re-energized in my fandom for him. Fans of all ages will find this book fascinating. Get it today!!!!

5 out of 5 stars David Cassidy is truly a legend.......2007-09-16

When this book came out I just had to have it! Like all young girls in the early 70's I was crazy about this guy! My sister and I would be glued to the tv to watch the Partridge Family and fight over which one of us would marry David when we grew up. While in my early teens I discovered David Bowie and have followed his career for over 30 years. In August of 2006 I re-discovered David Cassidy. His music makes you feel happy and your troubles seem to disappear. Since August of 2006 I have had the pleasure of meeting him backstage 3 times. What a thrill! I have so much respect for this man and the life that he has led. The second time I met him I told him he is my hero. He couldn't thank me enough and I could tell he meant it. I highly recommend this book. It is very well written and David's honesty shines thru. His story is truly amazing. He even mentions David Bowie in it!! lol When I started reading this book I honestly couldn't put it down and will re-read it again soon. For those of you who have never seen him live I highly recommend you catch one of shows. He is an incredible performer and sounds awesome. I was very pleasantly surprised the first time I saw him in 2006. You will walk away happy and very entertained. Now I just need to get back stage again so he can autograph my book! Read and enjoy! and yes...I still want to marry him! hehehe

5 out of 5 stars A great insight.......2007-08-25

Most of the early part of the hard-cover was a repeat of the first book, so I skipped ahead, starting with coverage of the Rolling Stone issue. From then, until the last pages, it was all new material. He covers the RCA recording sessions, why he chose the songs, & includes interviews with Kim & Dave, Bruce Johnson, & songwriters Bill House & Gerry Beckley. Even Shaun gives his opinions. This was the sort of subject matter I wish had been in the first book. The new material also covers Katie & her career, the Vegas years, the new recordings, & the "Brothers' Tour" of Florida. It touches briefly on Evelyn's declining health, & Meryl Tanz. It dismays me that he seems to be using prescription medicine more frequently, with the advent of hurting his legs during the Blood Brothers tour, until his foot surgery after "EFX", but I appreciate his honesty in showing how he is dealing with his mental health problems (I never want to see him ending up like Jack). Shaun, Patrick, Ryan, & Sue all give their sensitive opinions of their relationship with David through the years and Beau writes his own chapter of what it's like to be David's son. One of the most interesting passages I could relate to was on page 344, where his friend, Jerry Bilinski, writes of his dedication to his horses, especially Myan King. He says that even though the horse didn't do well in a race in Kentucky, David was able to perform on stage in Connecticut. I was at that concert- it was my first time at Mohegan Sun! I would recommend this new book to any David Cassidy fan, just for the new additions (but if you're an American who is financially impaired, I would wait until June, when it is released n Canadathe exchange rate is a bit more reasonable).

4 out of 5 stars Nicely co-written and edited .......2007-07-03

This new updated version of a 1994 publication, was co-written and edited by music author Ken Sharp. He also arranged and conducted the interviews with family members and friends. These updates gave this 2007 edition a better feel. Some parts of the orig. 1994 edition, which was co-written at that time by music author Chip Deffae, were also left intact.

Book Description

Told in the words of his musical accomplices, fellow–travelers, friends, and lovers, "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" is an intimate and unusual biography of fabled singer–songwriter Warren Zevon, the musical force behind such dark, witty rock–and–roll classics as "Werewolves of London" and "Roland, the Headless Thompson Gunner."

Narrated by Crystal Zevon, Zevon's former (and only) wife, it draws on interviews with Jackson Browne, Tom Petty, Emmylou Harris, Linda Rondstadt, Stevie Nicks, Lindsay Buckingham, the Everly Brothers, and a host of other denizens of Southern California's influential rock scene to tell the story of the original "Excitable Boy": literary hoodlum, OCD sufferer, brilliant songwriter, and rock–and–roll icon.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Warren Zevon fan's perspective.......2007-10-09

I've been a Warren Zevon fan since the '70s when I first heard "Werewolves of London." I first heard "Lawyers, Guns and Money" in '79 or '80 when I snuck into my first 21 bar as an underaged teen. I saw him in concert twice. I watched the VH1 documentary. So I had to buy the book. It's a fascinating look at an extremely talented, tortured man.

When I first saw the format, I was a little disappointed. I'd expected a narrative, but saw that the entire book was written in interview excerpts. But I thought it worked. Lots of pictures.

My only complaint: It was hard to keep track of the dates when events transpired--I would have liked to see more chronological references. And where were David Lindley's anecdotes?

I highly recommend this book. It's haunting.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks Crystal for Painting a Complete Portrait of Warren.......2007-09-21

I read this book in 4 days, and I can't remember the last book I read. Crystal Zevon does a wonderful job of conveying Warren's life and times. As well as personal insights, there are points of view from many others, including Warren. I really feel like I got the full picture by reading several versions of the same event. I cursed, I laughed, I cried and at one point I declared "Warren's a God". Of course Warren was a human like the rest of us. He just happened to be a human who was a great song writer and entertainer. Enjoy Crystal's book and Enjoy Every Sandwich.

4 out of 5 stars Sex, Drugs & Rock and Roll.......2007-09-12

with heavy emphasis on the sex and drugs. If you're looking for some insight as to what went on in the studio, how Warren's songs were constructed, details behind each album....forget it. If you want to learn all about Zevon's personal life, the drug addiction (and his subsequent withdrawal), his rabid sex addiction, the women (verbally, mentally and sometimes physically abused by Zevon) who seemed to never go away...what IS it with groupies, anyway?...this is the book for you. It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion. And just when you think he's straightened his life out by kicking drugs and alcohol, the seemingly uncontrollable sex addiction takes over. Fascinating stuff, though I probably won't play a Zevon album for awhile. Sometimes the distant image of a favorite rock star is best left that way.

5 out of 5 stars The Life and Times of an 'Excitable Boy'..........2007-09-11

Sometimes its' hard to find out the truth about your heroes. You'll read some un-authorized biography of a celebrity and half way through you'll put the book down and realize it's nothing more than a tell-all, hatchet job. You tell yourself, "I liked this person's public persona, enjoyed what they contributed to our culture and I really don't want to know these kind of facts about their personal life. In other words you really didn't want know that your heroes could be such as*h*les. It sort of ruins it for you.

Crytal Zevon's biography of her ex-husband, rocker/singer/songwriter, Warren Zevon, "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead: The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon" is an aptly titled book, which is the exception to this notion. It is an oral history using the voices of the late (Warren died of cancer in 2003) rocker's friends, family, lovers, collegues and musical peers to chronicle both his life and career.

Make no mistake about it, this book dishes the dirt and describes in detail, some of the more horrible aspects of Zevon's life, which included harrowing battles with alcoholism and the disease, OCD. It shows a man who had an almost Jekyll & Hyde personality. One moment he could be loving, kind...your best friend. The next moment he could be cold, callus and dismissive, ready to cut you out of his life over the smallest things. But despite these apects of his personality, It dosn't come across as a bitter tell-all. You can tell, that the people who contributed to this book really loved and cared about this guy, despite his many faults. In the end the book paints an intimate, moving portrait of a complex man, who was literally a musical genuis in his artistic, professional life, yet, led a very messy, dysfunctional, personal life. The vibe I get from reading this book is that he will be dearly missed by a lot of people, who were important to him.

There are a lot of great quotes in this book, but my favorite comes from Warren himself. His ex-wife, Crystal quotes a conversation she had with him towards the end of his life about the writing of this book in which Warren said the following, "You are my witness. The story is yours. But you gotta promise, you'll tell 'em the whole truth, even the awful, ugly parts. Cuz, that is the guy who wrote them excitable songs". That just about says it all...

5 out of 5 stars If you're interested in a behind the scenes look- get it!.......2007-09-04

I read this is 24 hours. I thought the writing style was very enjoyable and the nitty gritty details were out there for all to see (as it seems Warren wanted it). I think my favorite biography is Belushi by Judy Belushi Pisano but this is a close second.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!.......2007-09-12

So many great songs from so many eras. If you're looking to bolster your collection this is a WONDERFUL book to buy! Definitely worth every penny. Written in the original keys on many songs, and most are easy to read and play along with. FANTASTIC! I can't put it away.

4 out of 5 stars QUESTION please.......2007-03-11

I bought this book to play some songs on my flute, which I understood to be a "C" instrument. When I received it, it's great but the octaves seem too low for a flute. Were these books designed for piano only? I would appreciate knowing. I also bought a B flat one for my tenor sax and it also has very low notes for songs on a sax. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Pop/Rock Fake Book is the Ultimate.......2007-01-10

As fake books go it's the collection of songs and the sophistication of the chord underpinning that makes all the difference. The Ultimate Pop/Rock Fake Book scores 5 on both. The songs included covers a wide range of styles and the chords presented are faithful to the original sound of the music.

4 out of 5 stars Fake Book.......2006-08-09

If it's not here, you probably don't need it, but I was personally hoping for more from the Beatles. Good value for the money. I will use this a lot more than the Hal Leonard Ultimate Fake book. The Ultimate Fake Book has a smattering of patriotic, religious, and show tunes, and a wealth of polkas that even polka fans have probably never heard of in addition to SOME pop and rock.

Book Description

The most influential, enduring, and iconic metal band of the 1980's reveals everything a tell–all of epic proportions.

This unbelievable autobiography explores the rebellious lives of four of the most influential icons in American rock history.

Motley Crue was the voice of a barely pubescent Generation X, the anointed high priests of backward–masking pentagram rock, pioneers of Hollywood glam, and the creators of MTV's first ⯯wer ballad.⟔heir sex lives claimed celebrities from Heather Locklear to Pamela Anderson to Donna D rico. Their scuffles involved everyone from Axl Rose to 2LiveCrew. Their hobbies have included collecting automatic weapons, cultivating long arrest records, pushing the envelope of conceivable drug abuse, and dreaming up backstage antics that would make Ozzy Osbourne blanch with modesty.

Provocatively written and brilliantly designed, this book includes over 100 photos, many never before published, for the most exciting and insightful look ever into the Crue.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read lately..........2007-10-11

If you are a Motley Crue fan or just a rock n roll fan in general, this book is a definite read for you. I read it in 2 days, I just couldn't put it down it was that good. I thought the most interesting person in the book was Nikki Sixx (wow, the things he went through in his life will amaze you that he IS still alive). Read the book, I don't think you will be disappointed. Great read!!

4 out of 5 stars A great read.......2007-10-09

I just finished reading the book The Dirt, a semi-autobiography of the 80's band Motley Crue. It's a great read that is pretty mesmorizing. All four band members write about their childhood, the crazy period where they become the most famous band in America and then the post-fame period where they turn to drugs and amazingly hot chicks.

The middle section of the book is how the Crue got from a great live act to becoming a hit. They were constantly selling out shows on the LA Strip but none of the record labels wanted to sign them to a record deal. This was the early 80's and the entire industry thought that New Wave was the thing to be and Rock was dead. A 20-year old intern at Electra convinced the head of A&R to let him sign them. They then rel-released their first album and went on the next year to sell 5 million records. Even with that success, the label wanted to drop them because they didn't like their image. After the next year when they were the top selling artist of the year did Electra decide to stick with them.

Throughout the book Nikki Sixx emerges as the only one who understood what the band's direction was. He wrote most of the songs and consciously decided they should be a crossover from hard rock to mainstream. He also seems to be the glue that held the band together. He also was dating Lita Ford for most of their early days but eventually broke up when they went on tour for 18 months. They toured with Ozzy, who was even crazier than they were. He eventually married Baywatch star Donna D'Errico.

You also read how much drugs they took in both their early days. They were constantly doing coke, heroin, and anything else they could get their hands on. As a result they destroyed almost everything in the path and they hooked up with anything that moved. Both Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee overdosed and almost died, Vince Neil got into 3 drunk driving accidents, and Mick is a full-blown alcoholic even today.

You also read about Tommy Lee's marraige to Heather Locklear and Pamela Anderson (who he dated for only 4 days before they were married). Also about Vince's solo band and all the tragedies they've encountered along the way.

The beginning is pure rock and roll and the end is just sad. You would never think that their lives would be so hard but they all really struggle just to make it day to day. I guess a bunch of ego and booze and drugs will do that to you.

Note: i just saw here they're making a movie from the book with Val Kilmer and Christopher Walker rumored to play Ozzy and David Lee Roth.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I've ever read!!!.......2007-09-30

Art is a piece of work that moves you & this book did. I laughed, I was disgusted, I even cried. This is twenty years of a band strugling though fights, overdoses, suicide attempts, mariages, deaths, prison (it's all here!). I love how the story is told by different people so you can hearing everybody's version of what happened (crazy how everybody remebers things differently). You get to hear what happened behind closed doors & what wasn't in the tabloids. It truly was an awesome read - very hard to put down!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-09-18

From page one your are on a journey, as told by each memeber of the band, from the worst part of L.A. and Motley Crue's beginnings, to their rise to super stardom in the world of rock and roll. I was never much of a Crue fan when they were in their prime, but as I got older, I started to like their music and enjoyed reading about their beginning and the typical crazy road that most rock stars take.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for Elvis fans.......2007-10-01

GRACELAND: AN INTERACTIVE POP-UP TOUR is a must-have for any Elvis fan. I bought one for a friend, and it was such a hit that several of her friends have purchased them also. The pop-ups are well done, and the book gives a lot of information about Elvis and Graceland. It makes a great birthday present and will be the hit of the party.

5 out of 5 stars Well-done pop-up, awesome tribute, kitschtastic.......2007-09-21

I bought this for my mother, a huge Elvis fan, and she loves it. The pop-ups are very well done - lots of detail, and lots of little extra flaps and such to open. Each page features a different room - kitchen, jungle room, etc., and the book discusses the significance of each room in Elvis' life. In a slightly morbid twist, the last page is the grave of Elvis and his parents. Also included are a cardboard pair of Elvis' famous gold sunglasses that you can wear! This book far surpassed my expectations.

I gave this book as a gift and boy was it a huge hit. Great fun for everyone. If you have an Elvis fan in your circle you can not go wrong. Great detail and package. Highly recommended

Since I live in Memphis, I am of course an Elvis authority (not.) My father-in-law created the Christmas scene to Elvis' specifications years ago. I hoped that Christmas would be included. Eveyone I have shared this book with has bought one. I plan to use it for gifts. You don't have to be a fan to appreciate the accuracy and "fun" of visiting the King's house.

Book Description

Ever heard a song and thought "Hey, they ripped that off!"

Sounds Like Teen Spirit: Stolen Melodies, Ripped-off Riffs and the Secret History of Rock 'n' Roll is the first book ever to examine the phenomenon of songs that appear to have "borrowed" their melodies from earlier songs.

While many are familiar with the similarities between George Harrison's My Sweet Lord and the Chiffon's oldie He's So Fine, did you also know that:

· The first rock 'n' roll hit, Bill Haley's Rock Around the Clock took part of its melody from Hank William's Move it on Over?
· The guitar riff that powered Nirvana's classic Smells Like Teen Spirit had its origins in Boston's More Than a Feeling?
· Bob Marley's Buffalo Soldier shares its melody with The Theme from the Banana Splits, a kids show from the 1960s?

Come along for an exiting and informative journey through The Secret History of Rock 'n' Roll. You'll find out how ultra-hipsters the Strokes borrowed a melody from ultra-dork Barry Manilow; why Huey Lewis sued Ray Parker Jr. over Ghostbusters, how a novelty record cut by his dad may have influenced John Lennon's Imagine, and how an obscure song by the band Spirit was a likely inspiration in the creation of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven.

Sounds Like Teen Spirit will delight any music fan, and is sure to send you running to your stereo or I-Pod to hear the songs for yourself!

"A fun and fact-filled book that you can either read from cover to cover, or skip around and open up at any page and dig in. Most of the songs you can hear in your head (or dig out the cds!) and you'll find yourself going again and again 'Oh yeah, this song really does sound like that song!' An enjoyable read."- Bob Brainen, WFMU, Jersey City, NJ

"The book is a winner, one of those why didn't-I-think-of-that projects.guaranteed to elicit laughter and/or fistfights among your friendly neighborhood music geeks." -Kirkus Discoveries

5 out of 5 stars Sounds Like is a Behind The Hits winner.......2007-06-29

As a music author (Behind The Hits) and a radio dj/musicologist, I was very excited to learn of Timothy's book. Smells Like Teen Spirit has put together many of the songs I have chronicled over the years that sound suspiciously like others.

On my radio shows I have played them in a feature named "Call The Lawyers!" -- and, indeed, some of these song pairings went to court. Others didn't but perhaps should have. All in all, they represent a fascinating side of rock music history. Rip offs or inspirations? Homages or stolen riffs? No matter -- it's what was in the grooves that counts. Some are obvious, but one is often surprised by the musical connection Tim's ears have made. There are some songs here that even I never put together (or didn't know about), like Jorge Ben's "Taj Mahal" as the basis for Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy". And the song by John Lennon's father? Imagine that!

This is a very well-researched, well-documented and well-written reference as well as being a fun read. I commend and recommend Timothy's book to all who love and enjoy the various decades of rock and roll and the artists who made (or should we say, "re-made"?) the music.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of fun despite errors.......2007-06-29

This book was a lot of fun. It included the sound-alikes everyone knows - "My Sweet Lord" and "He's So Fine," "Sweet Little Sixteen" and "Surfin' U.S.A." - and some surprises. Did you know, for example, that Radiohead's "Creep" borrows from the Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe," and that Bon Jovi's "You Give Love A Bad Name" was re-worked from a Bonnie Tyler song? I didn't, and it made me listen to those songs to hear the resemblances.

I wish the book had been twice as long, as there certainly are more such examples. I also wish the author had included a CD with examples, but I'm sure that would have been a copyright nightmare.

The book, as fun as it is, is full of printer's errors. Who are "Nirvina" and "Holwin' Wolf?" I hope the sequel is more carefully edited.

3 out of 5 stars Fun and quick, but could be so much more.......2007-06-08

If you're into the history of rock music and love dissecting songs to see where they came from, you'll enjoy this book. It has many interesting examples of songs that were either directly ripped off from something else, or just sound suspiciously similar. The author gets into the history of the songs, the lawsuits and the stories behind the scenes. You'll be surprised and amused when you realize how many classic songs were ripped off from others, and that's the real joy of the book.
On the down side, the writing isn't dynamic and the book is a very quick read. You can probably get through it in half an hour. Also, it's tough to enjoy without hearing the music you're reading about. But if you can flip through it and listen to the songs at the same time, it's a lot of fun.

I'd already read Freeman's "Midnight Riders" and there is nothing new here.
Add a star if your a Guitar Gearhead - the history of Duane's axes is well done.

4 out of 5 stars Greatest guitar player,good book!.......2007-05-13

I enjoyed the history of Duane and the Brothers and how he impacted the music and musicians he came in contact with.It was well written and showed both the genius of Duane and also some of his human flaws which all of us can relate to,all this at a very young age!The only real problem I have with the book(and it is more a question why or why not)is the lack of peers such as Clapton,Winter,Vaughn,King etc, paying homage or at least being asked by the author to give Duane a pat on the back to Skydog, in my opinion the Greatest!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book On A Great Artist.......2007-05-12

This book is very enjoyable to read and gives a lot of information about Duane Allman. One thing that satands out as you read this book is that Duane was a visionary musician and the true leader of the Allman Brothers Band. The band has struggled to survive ever since his death on October 29, 1971. If Duane had not died and was still with us today, I believe there would have been more concentration on making great music, and less energy spent on fighting each other in the band and abusing drugs. Though Duane indulged in drugs himself, I'm sure he would have put that into perspective before too long, and he definately would not have allowed his band to be torn apart by in-fighting among the band members. The book shows how he really was the inspiration and glue that held them together. It's no wonder the others had to struggle so much after his demise.

5 out of 5 stars Powerfully Written.......2007-04-12

I was reading this on the bus the other day and found myself getting a little choked up during the part covering Duane's and Berry's deaths. Powerful writing; thanks Randy. Skydog lives.

4 out of 5 stars Where the music comes from.......2007-03-30

Based on some of the other reviews here, I expected to enjoy "Skydog" more than I did.

For those who can't remember where they were when they learned that Duane Allman had died, for those who didn't read the bio that accompanied the release of the first Anthology album, and for others who are new to the stories, Randy Poe's book is both informative and insightful. I was happy to find that I still wanted to listen to "Live at the Filmore," after reading it. (Freeman's book on the ABB a decade ago made it hard to listen to the band's work for a while.)

The sections of Poe's book on Allman's brief tenure in Alabama was the best part of the book.

But the book I want to read about Duane Allman and the Allman Brothers Band has yet to be written. I want to know where the music came from. Not the psychological sources, in the hard times that each band member suffered (which can be said to have been covered at this point), but in the recordings and live musicians they listened to, the experiments they tried.

One door that Poe opened, but didn't go through deeply enough, is the possibility (rather, the strong likelihood), that drugs altered the way that Allman heard what he was playing, and that he may have processed changes in style and technique to amplify tune he was hearing -- and what he wanted to hear.

That said, I would like to know a lot more about all of the sources that Allman brought to the sound and the individual compositions (and I'd like the same for Dickey's tunes, too). I want to know how solos changed over time, and what each musician was "quoting." I don't need to hear once more about the band's late night "sessions" at Rose Hill. I want to know what songs they played for each other at Rose Hill.

The stories about the Allman Brothers Band are interesting, sad, even tragic at times. But they aren't what makes the band worth writing about. What matters is the music.

You could build a library with all that's been written about The Doors over the past 40 years. This makes it hard to find anything new, but Ben Fong-Torres has done that here. Several never before published photos (including Jim dressed as an Indian for Halloween at age 7!) and interviews with Jim's father, brother & sister (his mother was unfortunately too ill to participate) make this a must for any Doors fan. Also has lots of commentary from Ray, Robby & John and others who were closely involved with the band.

Rock writer nonpareil Ben Fong-Torres has done an excellent job in this very fine work about the Doors. Lots of never seen before pictures and what a great treat that we finally heard something from Morrisons relatives, especially the rear-admiral. Im pretty sure those fat royalty cheques that started pouring in from 1974 has mellowed the old warriors heart over the years, but still you believe that somewhere deep inside, he was proud of his son achievements. It's a book that you can't put away, so if you start reading it early, you most likely will finish it the same day.
