Absolutely fabulous!.......2007-09-10
NOTE: The "patterns" referred to in the title are stitch patterns, not patterns for garments or other projects. If you want a how-to-knit-a-sweater-following-other-people's-instructions books, you are looking at the wrong review. If you want to learn creative knitting at it's finest, you are looking at the right book:).
My mother taught me the basics of knitting when I was a girl, but I never thought I would actually get interested in knitting until I found this book. It opened my eyes to a whole new way of thinking about knitting. Before I found this book in in the library, I had never thought of knitting as a creative means of designing fabric, but that's exactly what it can be, and the tools and methods are utterly elegant and simple. Knitting can create fabrics that rival the finest woven cloth, but all the tools you need can fit in a small bag or basket. If you are a creative person who is interested in fiber arts, and doesn't have a large work space, or money for looms or other equipment, knitting can be the answer to your dreams.
Whether you consider knitting an art, a craft, a stress-reducer, simply a way to make useful items, (or all of the above), you can benefit from this book. Even beginners can find basic knit and purl fabrics that are easy to make, yet look more complex than they really are. The same is true of lace kitting and multi-color patterns-you can start with very easy designs that will teach you the skills to work on more advanced stitches. Really, the sky is the limit. If you are interested in designing your own knits, or have learned to make basic knitted items and want to give them more pizazz, you can find a mind-boggling array of stitches that range from extremely easy to ultra-challenging.
Here's my advice for getting the most out of this book: give your self a knitting tutorial. Get some medium sized needles, and a few skeins of inexpensive yarn. The Germantowns, or midweight acrylics are fine for this purpose-you don't need fancy textures and colors. A smooth yarn in a light color will help you see the details of the stitches much better than dark or textured yarns. Then browse through the book and knit sample squares (AKA swatches) of whatever interests you. Don't try make anything yet-just focus on learning new patterns, and seeing how the fabric looks and behaves. If you make mistakes, just unravel your swatch and use the yarn again. If you like your swatch, save it for future reference. But don't feel obligated to make something useful every time you knit. Swatching your way through this book, or any of its sequels, is great mental exercise, even if you never make a thing!
A True Standard For The Avid Knitter.......2007-09-10
My orginal goal for this purchase was to get some basic stitches that I could use to start designing my own fabrics. Little did I realize how comprehensive this dictionary is - how much more could be contained in the other 4 volumes? Whatever stage a knitter you are, this first volume gives you more than enough information to get started, practice new skills, or move on to your own designs.
Beautiful and useful.......2007-08-26
I saw these books in several German knitterblogs and went so curious, that I decided to give them a try. The books are hard to find in between and I really hope, there will be a new release, so that they wont get lost.
The book has written a long time before, but it is absolutly timeless. The patterns are still beautiful and useable even today for a lot of wonderful projects.
If someone loves to knit items not completly after instructions, this book is a wonderful help and inspiration to arrange a very own project.
Love it!.......2007-07-31
I have a lot of knitting books. Some patterns I like but most were too basic or repeated. I stumbled across this and am ecstatic at all the wonderful patterns. I like how it gives you suggestions on what item the pattern works best on. The first time I opened the book, I was a bit surprised it was in black and white. Initially, it looks like xerox copies of the pictures. But as I looked through it, it didn't really bother me much. The beauty of the patterns still shows through and the stitching details are not lost. Overall, I am extremely happy. I spent hours looking through the patterns. My only regret is that I didn't buy it in hardcover (lol).
There are 500 patterns (the back cover says). The chapters include:
Simple knit-purl combinations
Ribbings
Color-change patterns
Slip- stitch patterns
Twist stitch patterns
Fancy Texture patterns
Patterns made with Yarn-over stitches
Eyelet patterns
Lace
Cables
Cable stitch patterns
a treasury of knittin patterns.......2007-06-01
I think this book is fantastic,I will buy more in the future.

Brilliant contents, horrible printing!.......2007-07-30
The contents deserve 5 stars, but the horrible printing deserves none! I gave it 4 stars because I didn't want to mislead people to think there's anything wrong about the contents.
I took out the original edition from the library and was enthralled by the brilliant patterns. I was happy to learn that it (along with other volumes in the series) has been reissued by the Schoolhouse Press. I quickly ordered this and the first volume. However, I was disappointed (no, make that disgusted) by the poor printing quality. In the original edition, patterns with 3, or more than 3, colors are printed in colors, which makes sense, because it's the only way to show the color patterns properly. Some people have commented on the "not so tasteful" color combinations in the original edition. But colors are a matter of personal taste and can be easily changed. At least one should be able to see how different colors interact in a pattern. In the reissue, they're in B/W and are impossible to make out! Even the 2-color patterns that are B/W in the original edition came out dark and muddy. Had I come across the reissue in the library I'd have bypassed it and missed out on a treasure. It's such a shame because Walker's books are timeless classics and should be in the possession of every serious knitter--novices or veterans. My suggestion: If you can, take out the book from your local library and make photocopies of the patterns you like. Then pray that some day some conscientious publisher would do justice to Walker's classics.
Treasury of Knitting Book 2.......2007-05-15
Excellent book! Very comprehensive. I love it! I plan to purchase the other 3 in this set.
Classic Must Have For Knitters.......2007-05-09
I had this book many years ago and lost it during a move. I am so glad it has been reprinted and made available again. Barbara Walker's books are classic and a must have for knitters of all experience levels. Nowhere else will you find such a variety of knitting patterns contained in one book.
Great addition to the knitter's library.......2007-04-02
Great addition to the knitter's library
Variety of the patterns that EVERY knitter a MUST HAVE!
Pricy, but it still worth every penny!
no really, it's that good.......2007-03-11
I couldn't wrap my head around how great a stitch pattern book could be until I got this! I'd always looked at other similar books and thought I could have come up with something like that on my own, or that I'd seen the stitch before in every other book. I ordered this and the first book sight unseen. I'd heard so many positive reviews that I decided to bust out the big bucks and add them to my library. True the pics could be a bit clearer (they are in black & white), but I still could see them and get a good idea of what I'm looking at. I found lots of inspiration and new ideas. So exciting! If you need to just have one book, the first or the second would be great. The second book has some cool edgings not found in the first, but otherwise they are equaly fantastic. Worth it!
Book Description
With her latest book, A Treasury of Magical Knitting, Cat Bordhi introduces knitters of all levels to the warm welcome of a simple and mysterious dimension of knitting. Here you will find thirty-three projects, including scarves with one side and one edge, knitted in one fell swoop, like the Fringed Cedar Bark Scarf or the Mercurial Moebius Wraps. . . graceful headwear, like the Beaded Tresses Hat. . . felted footwear both practical and functional, like Sophie's Mermaid Feet . . . the Lost Trail Cape with its four-way convertible collar . . . and the Seven Socklings Necklace.
Cat, who is known for her clear and comprehensive instructions both as a workshop teacher and as the author of the best-selling Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles, has taken outdone herself in this full-color, 112 page coffee table quality book. Instructions for the simple technique are illustrated with close-up photos showing every move, almost like a slow motion movie, accompanied by clear descriptions so that learners of all kinds will find it easy to get started.
This author of novels (Treasure Forest, first of The Forest Inside trilogy, recently won the Nautilus Award for Young Adult Fiction) and knitting books blends the art of fine story-telling with instruction. In her own words:
"Following the unfolding path of a novel is astonishingly similar to following the unfurling flow of a knitting book. Both ask me to simply show up, keyboard or needles in hand, all my senses alert and willing to welcome what wants to meet me. Sometimes I think that it is because I am tame, and so the beautiful creations that populate both novels and knitting books come nibble the grass near my feet. I do not invent any of it. I simply get to be where it is, experiencing it fully so I can share it with you. And if you recognize it, if it sparks something in you, it is because it lives in you too."

Marvelous Moebius.......2007-09-05
Cat Bordhi's book on the moebius loop is a bit of a one-trick pony, but you gotta admit, it's a really good trick. The patterns are the same thing over & over again in different gauges, but the cast-on technique is clearly explained & was quite easy to pick up. This one's a good addition to the knitting library.
For the mind and the fingers.......2007-08-24
Cat writes engagingly about the mobius and the creative process she experienced in channeling the projects in the book. I appreciated her encouragement along the way with guidance like "If something goes wrong, rejoice and dive in to see what treasures are revealed" and "Find something to do more or less of and see what happens" and best of all, "Have at it". Sure, if you stick to her patterns you'll have great projects, but if you stick to her advice to engage your creative muse you'll also have the satisfaction of a one-of-a-kind reflection of you. One caution with this as well as any other knitting book: do an internet search for errata before you start any project.
Knitting out of "the box".......2007-03-19
Cat's book will have you thinking about knitting in an entirely different way than you've ever thought of it before! You'll certainly find something in here to nudge your creativity and be thinking of doing many new things with your needles and yarn. The book is a special memory for me after having a mobius workshop with her. She shares both her personality as well as her love of the craft of knitting in the book. It is a treasury you will treasure because of the clear instructions and explanations.
Mobius magic.......2007-03-15
If you are looking for something new in your knitting projects - buy this book. I am addicted to knitting mobious objects after reading this book. The cast-on method is a bit tricky but just follow her clearly written directions and you can do it. I love the projects in this book and the photgraphs that demostrate them. It helps to catch Cat Bordhi on The Knitty Gritty show if you want some extra help figuring this out.
not satisfied with the instructions.......2007-01-12
I have been a knitter for over 40 years and am adept at reading patterns. This particular book was written assuming people had taken her class. If you haven't the insturctions are skimpy at best. I was very disappointed. I tried to email her at her email from the book and received no response.

The best knitting book I own.......2007-03-20
Barbara Walker is amazing and her book has been an endless source of inspiration. Anyone interested in designing their own patterns will love this book.
Excellent! .......2007-02-22
This book is an excellent source of beautiful knitting patterns, including lace, cable and patterns. The black and white photo's of the stitches are so sharp and detailed, the designs pop off the page. The best part, for me, the charts are very large and so easy to see (without my glasses on!)and very easy to understand what she is telling you to do. She also gives some instructional information as well that is very good. If you buy only one knitting stitch book, this is the one to get!
Charted Knitting Designs.......2005-10-02
This book is excellent. I bought this book at my local library's book sale last year for a dollar. It has the most amazing and unusual patterns in it and well worth the money. This is a must have for any serious knitter. The more challenging the patterns, the more I like the book.
This has a lot of unusual knitting patterns that you typically do not see in recently published knitting books. There are 350 different stitches, many of which Barbara G. Walker devised herself.
Chapter 1: Textured Fabrics
Chapter 2: Twist Stitch Patterns
Chapter 3: Cables
Chapter 4: Closed-Ring Designs in Cabling (very unusual stitches)
Chapter 5: Cable-Stitch Patterns
Chapter 6: Lace
Chapter 7: Lace Panels
Chapter 8: Mosaic Patterns
Chapter 9: Color Patterns
Chapter 10: Uncharted Miscellany
Chapter 11: Knitting Directions for Illustrated Samples
Charted design + photo of the knitted design.......2004-11-20
Charted knitting Designs is divided into the following sections: textured fabrics, twist stitch pattern, cables, closed ring designs in cabling, cable-stitch patterns, lace panels, mosaic patterns, color patterns, uncharted miscellany and knitting directions for illustrated samples. The last chapter showcases a few simple projects that use patterns found in the book. All other chapter include a photo of the finished knitted texture and a chart (or row by row directions in the non-charted section) of the pattern. This makes visualizing a finished product so much easier and makes it easy to thumb through and look at textures. The photos cover a big enough section of fabric to really get a feel for them.
The patterns show all kinds. My favorite was one called "The Mask" in the uncharted section. It allows you to knit a theater mask into a piece of fabric. You increase and then decrease for the nose, so it sticks out for a 3-D mask.
This book is hardly a must-have (because there are so many knitting books out there), but it is very good for visualizing what a finished product will look like.
Charted patterns are SOMETIMES best.......2004-02-16
I purchased this book thinking it would be similar to the first two Treasuries, but ended up being a bit disappointed. There are plenty of new patterns, of course, but much less than I'd hoped for, and many of them are (in my opinion) unattractive and unusable. Many of the cable patterns fall into this category, and some of the novelty patterns are just weird. The spider is wonderfully life-like, but I just don't know of anyone who wants a big, lifelike, textured spider knitted into their garments.
This was my introduction (and a good one, I believe) to charted patterns. My current obsession is cables, and many (though not all) cabled patterns work VERY well when charted in this way. They make much more sense to me than the written instructions using codes such as FC, FPC, SBC, etc. I've been taking many other cable patterns and charting them on graph paper using the patterns in this book as guidelines.
Bottom line - worth getting, but not nearly as indispensible as the first two.

Fourth Treasury of Knitting Patterns.......2007-10-06
This fourth book in the series was a disappointment. There were some patterns from the previous "Treasuries" and the new patterns seemed to me to be leftovers and not very interesting. I returned the book.
Barbara Walker's Treasure Trove.......2007-07-18
If you are a knitter then there will come a time that you will need this book. Want to branch out and do something other than plain old boring stockinette? This is the book for you. It is written in clear, and easy to understand instructions. This should be the knitter's bible with all the patterns it has in it.
A Fourth Treasury of Knitting Patterns.......2007-05-25
I own all of the Barbara G. Walker Treasury of Knitting Pattern books. Every single one of them is a must have for any serious knitter. The only disadvantage to them is that the photos are all in black and white and rather small. However, this did not stop me from completing my Barbara G. Walker knitting library.
How many knitting pattern books do you need? Well..........2002-11-21
There were three Walker treasuries and now there are four. This book includes the previously-published "Sampler Knitting" and in addition, 82 stitch patterns never published before. Most of these are complicated all-over texture and lace, but there is an attractive textured teddy bear and a lace stitch that looks like a butterfly. The sampler has a lot of intricate cables. Fun for afghans.
While there are many stitch pattern "dictionaries", the Walker series is very large and comprehensive. Knitters who like to design their own knit patterns will appreciate the new material. If you only knit from printed patterns, it's fun to take a standard pattern like a sock cuff and add lace or textured stitches and create something completely new. This is a nice addition to the previous trilogy of Walker stitch patterns and a welcome addition for the avid knitter who likes to design.
Book Description
Readers of the first book in this two-volume series (A Treasury of Magical Knitting) have fallen in love with the new world of Magical Knitting, a dimension so simple yet so captivating that one could spend a year exploring the huge variety of designs which Cat offers. Beginning with Cat's unique Moebius Cast-On, which is so easy that she usually demonstrates it in workshops behind her back while twirling slowly around on one foot, the reader first learns to knit a Moebius band, or scarf. This is the magic key that opens the way to all the other designs. The Second Treasury includes felted baskets (with no inside or outside!), felted fringed bowls, felted and unfelted sling bags, six different felted cat beds (one with paws and a tail!), and the trifold designs, including a knitter's bowl with pockets for tools and a place to keep working yarn away from playful felines. The Felted Needle Cozies, colorful, highly textured sheaths to hold straight needles, and the felted wallets are both excellent patterns for beginners and first-time felters. The book includes detailed information on felting, designing, and yarn substitutions.

Magical Moebius Worlds.......2007-08-23
I bought this book on a recommendation from a friend. I immediately knew I wanted to make the marvelous moebius scarf pictured in the book. Cat's photographic directions on how to do the magical cast-on were excellent, and I managed to make a scarf. It finished with an applied i-cord edging, which I had never done before, but once again, her photographs made the directions very clear. I've made 3 of these scarves and they are quite fascinating.
I'm now ready to attempt some of the wonderful baskets that she features in the book. I want to see how some of them would work up in self striping yarn. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for something a bit different.
Excellent fun!.......2007-07-21
Although I find the projects in the first book more interesting, there are enough in this one to justify buying it - especially the bowls and cat beds. The Mobius Cast on pages are very clear, as are the instructions for Round One. I used her suggestion of a smaller needle on the left side and found my stitches slipping quite nicely on my Denise cords. No need to go out and buy more circs. Hurray! However the suggestion for using two circs on the body of the bowl was not necessary as I used a 16 inch and then double pointeds at the ending.
I am having great fun using up partial balls and adding eyelash and ribbon yarn as fun striping and edging. Also I had been wanting to learn the I-cord bind off for a while. Cat's instructions are definitely easy to follow. This is a book for adventurous knitters unless you have worked the first book so are familiar with mobius knitting.
Not as great as I thought it would be.......2007-02-14
I bought the "Treasury of Magical Knitting" and this book. One would have been enough.
emperor's new clothes.......2007-02-09
I paid nearly $30 for this book and wish I'd spent it on something more worthwhile. The Moebius cast-on is nothing more than a provisional cast-on done on a looped circular needle. While the introductory project, a Moebius scarf, drapes nicely, it's hardly worth a $30 book just for the casting-on method. The rest of the designs are unattractive. I couldn't care less if the strap on a bag is twisted. Ny cats would undoubtedly turn up their noses at a knitted bed (no matter how many hours I'd spent on it). And unless I'm missing something in the photos, anything felted won't show whether it's been knit by the moebius cast on or simply begun as a strip conventionally cast on and off, given a half-twist and joined at the ends, and the long side's stitches picked up again. I think we have something of a boondoggle here.
Mobius rocks.......2007-01-07
I am a new knitter. After taking a class on the Mobius method, and getting into Cat Bordhi's fun and quirky head, it will be very boring for me to pick-up any of my other started projects. I have this and the first book, and was able to create many quick christmas presents that were a hit. Cat has found many ways that have simplified so many of the knitting methods, I am now able to transfer her methods to other knitting book patterns that I was afraid to try. I highly recommend trying these 2 books, you won't believe how how fun and strange it is, and knitting will never be the same for you.

A Treasury of Rowan Knits.......2007-01-04
The patterns are gorgeous and well described. The book is like art work. Thanks, Penny
You'd better like small needles and cotton yarn.......2006-08-10
This book is very disappointing! Although the patterns are lovely and timeless, the vast majority of them are done in cotton yarn with very small needles. If you enjoy knitting with worsted weight yarn, forget this book unless you enjoy rewriting patterns.
On top of this, everything is graphed, even plain knit & purl patterns. All of the graphs are shown in such a small scale that you would go blind trying to follow them and some of them spread over two pages. In addition, the graph lines in between every tenth one are very faint. If you want to use these graphs, it is essential that you have a scanner and computer program to enlage them. Of course you will have to print them out over several overlapping pieces of paper and hope the tiny graph lines show up - or write them all out by hand!
Not what it promises to be.......2005-12-28
This book promises 80 patterns from 10 favorite disigners.
However, 90% of the patterns are by Kim Hargreaves. The other designers have one or two patterns each. Very disappointing, if you are looking for a variety of designer choices. Many of the photos are soft focus, example: the full page photo on page 199 is really fuzzy. There is a blue sweater on page 171 which one can not even make out what it looks like. Not what I expect from a book with a $39.95 retail price and the Roawn name. It has some nice designs, but gets boring due to the same designer contributing most of the patterns. I give it 3 stars because it does contain some good patterns and the patters come in many sizes. The book also presents variations of some patterns by showing them made with different yarns, for men & women and children. Some good children's patterns are included. I'll keep it for future reference, but check it out before you shell out the bucks, it might be worth it to you. It is not a bad book. I am just a little disappointed and feel that Rowan should be up front with their content and good with their photos.
A true treasury.......2004-12-16
Great collection of the designs for every taste. I found myself going crazy trying to deside which one to do first. Lamb's Pride from Brown Sheep is an excellent affordable substitute for discontinued Rowan yarn.
I thought instructions were clear and complete. I found no mistakes so far.
Beautiful assortment of designs - no fat chicks allowed.......2004-07-15
I'll preface this by saying I've never been a fan of Rowan yarns or patterns - the former because they tend to be too tame and expensive for my tastes, the latter because they seem aimed at bony women. I spoke with their reps and mentioned the fact that they are excluding a large share of knitters and was told that they didn't know whether it would be thought offensive to have a separate book of larger patterns or if they should pepper them throughout another book. Two years later, I think continuing to ignore larger or plus-sized women and men is the offensive part.
On the upside, the patterns really are gorgeous (which is why I'm upset that I can't wear or alter them) and use varied techniques and skill levels, so everyone can find something they like. A number of child patterns are repeated in "Pipsqueaks" and "Tadpoles and Tiddlers", so if you only want to make kid clothes, check those out first - you may save a few dollars. I traded Brown Sheep for Rowan yarn and my Odd Job sweater is coming along nicely, so just match fibers in the back yarn listing and hit your gauge to substitute.

excellent afghan book.......2002-10-07
This book was the first of a big collection, and it remains one of my favourites. Has gifts for everybody. The projects are beautiful, well explained and with detailed pictures. I've done several afghans and they all turned out perfect. I would recommend it to everyone from beginner to expert level. I also bought Vanna's afghans all through the house, also a great book.
Vanna's Favorites.......2000-12-09
This book contains some of the most innovative afghan patterns I've ever seen. I specifically purchased it after searching for a double wedding ring afghan pattern. It turned out to be simply the most gorgeous afghan I've ever seen. Quite challenging for a relative novice like myself.
The variety of afghans in this book is wonderful. The pictures are clear, the instructions simple to understand. It's very inspiring book.
Vanna's Favorite Gift Afghans.......2000-08-03
I checked this book out at the library and loved it, bought this one and her other 2 afghan books. Has varying levels of difficulty. Designs are beautiful and very motivating. The designs will not be outdated. Perfect gift for the crochet lover!
A Must-Have Afghan Pattern Book.......2000-01-31
I am so pleased with this book. I am on a constant search of imaginative, unique patterns from doilies to afghans, and this book does fit the bill. I have always been a fan of any Vanna patterns, I have the entire binder she puts out, and have done many things out of it. I like the way the patterns are written, they are very clear. One note of caution: Vanna patterns that I know of do not have difficulty levels noted, and they do vary quite a bit from beginner to advanced. You will have no problem if you are intermediate or up, but may have a few if you are a beginner.
Question.......1999-12-20
I am making the loving hearts afghan and have done something wrong or cannt figure out how to connect my strips of motifs together. I honestly think you left out that step. Please help.
