Learn or expand your applique skills.......2007-10-10
will be able to learn from and expand the skills I have HERE IT IS: APPLIQUÉ: THE BASICS AND BEYOND. It will be my Bible when I appliqué!
The very first thing that caught my attention was the fact it was done in a spiral ring binding. This allows the book to STAY open which is very important for me as I am sewing and learning at the same time. I no longer have to set weights on the corners of the pages to keep them open. As a visual learner, this is very important.
The book is arranged in five chapters which include: Getting Started - Basics and Beyond, Equipment and Supplies, Preparing Appliqué, Projects and Patterns. Each chapter is very detailed with lots of photos to guide you along with the written instructions. There are tips scattered throughout each section as well.
The Embellishing chapter is jam packed with ideas on how to add that special touch to your project. From cords to beads to embroidery, there is an embellishment that will give your piece a bit of pizzazz.
There are eight different projects but using you own imagination and creativity, you will be able to create dozens of other projects. Five are wall-sized projects and three are quilt-sized. The projects give a difficulty level so you are sure to try the project that is appropriate for your skill level. Then once you have completed a lower level, you can give the next level project a try. All the templates are full-sized so you don't have to make a trip to the copy shop.
A two-page index helps you locate whatever you need to review or learn and the final page is a bio about the author, Janet Pittman. All in all, this book is one that I would highly recommend to anyone because you can add to your present skills or start to learn how. It is definitely a book that will remain in my sewing room library.
Applique the Basics & Beyond: The Complete Guide.......2007-09-27
This book gives a very good overview of many different types of applique along with the steps to achieve a finnished piece. I looked at several books on the subject and this was the best that I found. Highly recomended.
Great Instructional book.......2007-06-11
This book is a great tool for applique. It answers most questions beginners have.

A Must Have For Your Quilting Library.......2007-05-24
I am one of those people who is not at all interested in doing one of those huge beautiful quilts other quilt artists create because it is such a time consuming process. I prefer smaller projects which I know will get finished farily soon, and which can be picked up and put down easily. I love applique and when I found this book I knew I had found the book for me. All of the projects in the book are fairly small and portable, and the book is very well detailed and presented. From start to finish, you get the usual primer in materials, technique, use of fabric and color, then you get plenty of projects to keep you busy if you don't find your own to do. The fact that the book is spiral bound is a great help when laying it out on the table for reference. If you're into smaller projects the way I am then this is another book for you.

I took a two-day class by Harriet Hargrave and absolutely loved her. Her books are the next best thing to having her teach you personally. Her photos and descriptions are detailed and helpful. I own both of her books along with two of Diane Gawdowski (a former Hargrave student).

Best Beginner Book.......2007-06-07
I bought my first sewing machine back in February 2007. I had never used a sewing machine before in my life. I was fascintaded by quilts and other sewing projects. I reviewed many quilting books at the local bookstore, probably over 30. I found this one the best. It has so many photos giving you step by step instructions on how to make a quilt by hand or with a sewing machine. The format of the book is perfect and arranged great. The book will teach you how to coordinate fabrics by pattern, color, and style with a variety of methods.
Inside the book you will discover many different layouts for quilts and designs. Enough to keep you busy for years.
I was able to make my first quilt with this book. Remember I knew nothing about the subject, what materials to buy, and how to sew a quilt together (I did not even know how to sew a striaght line at the time) and I made a quilt.
After purchasing this book, I do not think I would need another quilting book. There is nothing missing from this book. It is the best reference out there.
Okay, enough said, if you are a beginner or need new tips or techniques, put this book in your shopping cart and buy it.
Have fun quilting everyone.
You NEED this book.......2007-06-07
Better Homes and Gardens Complete Guide to Quilting was my first Quilting book, and still the one I turn to most. The detailed instruction and large number of photographs attracted me to this book in the first place. It served as an excellent primer that instructed me in how to put a quilt together, not to mention how to design a quilt top. It is also chock full of techniques that I've gone on to try, or are still on my list of things I want to learn how to do. More than all of this, though, I find myself referring back to the book again and again. How large should I make a quilt for a twin-sized bed if I plan to tuck it under the pillow and allow for a drop over the side? What's the best way to piece diamonds together into a block? Where can I look for block design or inspiration? It's all there.
I would say that if you need ONE reference for quilting, this is it.
Eye Candy for the beginner quilter.......2007-01-09
This is a beautiful guide for beginners and advanced quilters alike. It reveals all the secrets to all the things I've wondered about how quilters do what they do so well! I have five kids and can't get to quilting classes so I bought this book based on previous reviewers' comments and they were right.
It shows an up-close view of every quilting technique with very well-written instructions.
Sometimes I just peruse through the book looking at the wonderful photographs. Buy it!
Complete Guide to Quilting (Better Homes and Gardens Creative Collection).......2007-01-04
This was wonderful for the novice quilter and takes you forward into more challenging projects. It covers both the basics and advanced techniques clearly with excellent photographs as well as narrative.
Helpful reference guide with great pictures.......2007-01-01
This is a great reference guide with step by step photos. It is clearly organized and has a great index. I bought this before I even started quilting, but it was too overwhelming then! I've been quilting for about a year now, and I use this whenever I have a question, or need some inspiration. A great book for any quilter's library.

Great book.......2006-02-26
This book is awesome! It is packed with SO much information. Carol covers everything. She answers questions I didn't even know I had until I read the answer! She tells you what you NEED to get started, useful items you may want to purchase and what items are best to not purchase until you have more experience. She has saved me a ton of money just with those suggestions. This book is WELL worth the money and one you will refer to time and time again.
Fabulous.......2006-01-21
This is an indispensable book to the long arm machine quilter. It is jam packed with information about LAMs so if you add it to your personal library and it will be referred to again and again. There is information on care, maintenance, troubleshooting, how to improve your work, what to look for in a machine, tons of tips and she also touches on technique here and there although it isn't a how to book. Look elsewhere for actual patterns.
A must-have book for machine quilters!.......2005-05-05
You've seen the long-arm machine ads in your favorite quilting magazines. What could be more helpful to finish that never-ending stack of quilt tops that you've been happily producing than your own long-arm quilting machine? Wait a minute! Before you rush out and buy the first long-arm machine that you come across, you need to read "Long-Arm Machine Quilting" by Carol A. Thelen.
Ms. Thelen is an accomplished long-arm machine quilter with a degree in mechanical engineering to boot. She shares her vast knowledge of long-arm machine quilting in this wonderful resource.
The book assumes no prior knowledge of quilting machines. The first chapter begins with an explanation of the quilting system followed by an introduction to the seven major manufacturers of long-arm quilting machines. Information is also included about optional electronics such as the Intellistitch I/S-2K controller and the Statler Stitcher. The chapter ends with comparison chart of features so that you can see how each machine stacks up against the others. This chapter alone makes this an incredible value for those who are looking for the right machine to fit their quilting needs.
The next three chapters take you through the functions of a long-arm machine, the tools and accessories that you will need to get started, and the supplies such as needles, thread, and batting. This is followed by a wonderful chapter that will help you choose your backing fabric and plan your quilting design.
Chapter Six is where you'll find how to load your quilt onto the machine, thread the machine, bring up your bobbin thread, rip out stitches, and much more. The following chapters explore the options that you have for long-arm machine quilting including quilting with pantographs and other patterns, freehand and semi-freehand quilting ,and specialty techniques such as embellishments, couching, bobbin drawing, wholecloth quilts, chenille, and t-shirt quilts.
The final two chapters deal with the care and maintenance of your machine and troubleshooting hints for common problems such as broken needles, thread problems, motor jams, and more. The book concludes with a large list of long-arm machine quilting suppliers complete with phone numbers, email addresses, and website addresses.
If you are thinking about purchasing a long-arm machine and don't know where to start, this is a must-read for you! If you already own a long-arm machine and want to learn more about your machine, this is a great resource to have at hand.
Long Arm Machine quilting must have!!!.......2003-10-14
This is a great book for the beginner Long Arm quilter or people who don't have a long arm machine but are thinking of buying one. Even if you have been quilting for years, there is always something more to learn. Great details on maintaining machines but also on different quilting styles. I loved this book and hopes Carol writes another one. (although this book has every thing)

Useful information for quilting.......2007-08-30
I thought the book was quite good. It was a great help with some of my questions but could have been more thorough on some of the sections. That being said I still think it was informative and would recommend for another beginner.
Made no sense.......2007-05-02
I have taken a couple quilting classes and made 2 crib quilts before buying this book. I'm currently attempting the "Trip Around the world" design and can not make sense of the instructions. I've already spent about 15 hours (my mother too) trying to make sense of what goes where. It just isn't clear or there is an incorrectly written step. Very frustrating.
no longer an idiot.......2007-03-10
Great easy to understand instructions and diagrams. No longer feel stupid since all questions and answers are here. Tells you what you need to know and then some.
Fantastic book.......2007-01-16
I found this book absolutely fabulous, perfect for the beginner, I have many books on Quilting but I could never quite grasp it!! With this book I have seen the light,I found it so easy to follow, with step by step instruction. It has many easy projects. I began with a sampler quilt and managed to finish! I am so excited that I can finally quilt. It truely is the complete idiots quide to quilting. It is THE book for a beginner!
For machine and handsewers alike.......2007-01-13
I had previously made several machine sewn quilts, but had never really been taught how to make them. Most of what I knew I just picked up along the way. When I began reading this book it was with the intention of learning some of the techniques and vocabulary I had never been taught. I hoped to find tricks to make quilting for me a bit less tidious and time comsuming. Well, I found it in this book! I will agree with the comment made previously that this book is geared more toward handsewing, which at first put me off a little. I decided though that it couldn't hurt to learn and try it the authors way, and by so doing possibly even pick information up that could help me with my machine quilting also. I found that it did just that! Much of what I learned can be adapted and made useful for machine quilting also. So if you machine quilt do not despair, give the book a try. The book was easy to read and enjoyable and I was even able to make my first hand sewn lap quilt with in two weeks over the Christmas holiday. That may seem like nothing, but I assure you if I had done it by machine it would have taken me longer, cause you can't pack up your machine and take it with you where ever you go(i.e. the doctor's office, the car, etc).

Very Satisfactory.......2007-01-15
The book arrived quickly and well packaged. It was in new condition as promised. Can't ask for a better deal.
More of a pattern book than a complete guide.......2006-10-24
It's an okay resource book, but I found most of the book consists of quilt patterns instead of a guide. I much prefer "Quilter's Complete Guide" by Fons and Porter or "The Quilter's Ultimate Visual Guide" by Ellen Pahl as a guide on how to construct a quilt from start to finish.
great book for beginning quilters.......2005-09-07
My daughter recommended this book and it's companion book "Quilts, Quilts and More Quilts."
I am always looking for quilt patterns, so I ordered both books.
They are great.
Would recommend any quilter have them in their library of quilting books.
Good, not perfect -- novice quilter review.......2005-07-08
I am a novice sewer and quilter who bought this book on the recommendation of a highly experienced sewer who used the book to learn to quilt. I know several novice sewers who have successfully learned to quilt from this book. Techniques that save time and effort are scattered throughout, and I found most to be easily understood. However, I have found some of the directions on piecing to be difficult to follow even for fairly simple quilts. Though I am generally able to follow directions in most books I found that I was unable to comprehend some instructions even after reading them several times. People more adept at space relations might have fewer problems than I experienced.
On the plus side the book does a good job of addressing color and fabric pattern types, and how they effect the overall look of a quilt. After reading descriptions attached to photographs of fabrics, and the text discussions, I was much more attuned to nuance, and more confident, in selecting fabrics. Examples of differing color and pattern approaches to memory blocks, with photos of both the individual blocks and how those blocks looked when sewn together, were also very helpful.
Overall, the book is geared towards selecting patterns and fabrics and constructing the top of a quilt. There is very little information on actual quilting stitches or machine quilting. There is no discussion of rotary cutter technique though instructions are given on strip cutting both with rotary cutters and scissors.
I would buy the book again and believe it is a good value.
Great First Book.......2005-04-30
This was my first quilting book and the sampler quilt I made while taking the begining quilt work shop is still my favorite quilt. Everything you need to know is in this book and easy to understand. The quilts they have the directions for are in many sizes which is very nice. If you only purchase one book this should be the one.

The revised edition has been updated, and has an extra chapter covering new things like photo quilts ,finishing bindings .I recommend this book for all quilters, beginners or advanced
One of the Best Quilting Books I've Found.......2007-05-11
I took this book out of the library a few weeks ago and couldn't wait to get my own copy. Marianne Fons & Liz Porter have written a book that is even clear to me! That's an accomplishment! Each quilt in the book starts with the invitation to make one block, in order to learn new techniques. When you've completed all these single blocks you can put them together and have quite an impressive quilt. Instead of having one quilt pattern that you're comfortable with making, you have an entire repertoire!
These women are excellent teachers. They include tips throughout the book. Many diagrams, many clear pictures illustrating the steps. I can't say enough about this book. Whether you're a beginner or an accomplished quilter this book will be an excellent addition to your bookshelf.
Best Reference book for quilters both experienced and beginner!.......2007-03-17
Learn to do all the most important and essential techniques needed top become an expert quilter! The price was exceptionally good -- about one-half that of retail book stores -- I bought 2 copies -- one for myself and one for a fellow quilter. Thanks for the good deal.

Wonderful!.......2000-02-22
I'd tried applique for the first time using Ami Simms's Invisible Applique, and although that wasn't entirely an unsuccessful attempt, I put down applique as something that was just not for me--it was hard and my first few tries were messy. But Sinema's Applique Applique Applique was amazing--I bought it and the light turned on. My first attempt after reading her book was an amazing success--perfect! Her descriptions and patterns are fantastic, and she fully explains decorative stitches as well as the applique stitch with careful diagrams. And the inclusion of many different types of applique, as well as many types of projects--was exactly what I needed. This is the ULTIMATE applique book!
Great book with easy to read directions and clear patterns.......1998-11-04
This is a great book if you are interested in learning different applique techniques. I think that it is clearly written and easy to understand. The patterns are full size and easy to use for many of the applique pieces. There are many different styles and patterns to choose from. A great "basics" book.
