Her program encourages both positive health practices and a positive outlook; the important tools needed for prevention and healing. Dr. Schatz has designed this program to help those with pain from chronic musculoskeletal back and neck strain, spinal arthritis, osteoporosis, premenstrual syndrome, pregnancy, and scoliosis. Simple and practical ways to heal the back, restructure the body, and cope with stress are taught so that one becomes more sensitive to early warning signs of an impending "back attack" and what to do to ward it off.

Great Resource for Teachers and Students Alike.......2007-09-17
I notice that a few reviewers have mentioned they found exercises in the book too easy and it's true that the book is geared toward those who may be recovering from injury and/or are new to yoga. That said, as a yoga instructor and long-time practitioner I've found this book to be a wonderful resource. In fact, some of the poses in the book have become staples in my lesson plans (and in my own practice) because they serve - for beginners and advanced students alike - as excellent warm-up poses to begin opening the body or cool-down poses to release the lower back. In addition, some of the poses shown using a chair or wall as a prop are useful both for beginners unable to do the full pose and (of equal importance!)for intermediate students who have experience with the full pose, but have never learned, or are still working on mastering correct points of alignment, which are integral to gaining the full benefits of the pose. Finally, I've found one set of exercises - aimed at identifying and correcting pelvic torsion (a slight - and common - misalignment in which the left hip point is drawn a bit too forward while the right is pulled back (or vice versa) - that I've found nowhere else and which has elicited a lot of positive feedback from student in classes where I've used it.
A few words to intermediate students: (1) If you're suffering back pain, it's quite likely that the Iyengar-based exercises in this book, rather than other, more "advanced" or novel asanas (poses) will prove to be better tools for dealing with it. (2) If you have a regular, committed yoga practice and it either is not mitigating or is making your back-associate pain worse you may need to take a closer look at your alignment in the poses, particularly if you began doing yoga in a vinyasa, or flow style and have never received, or have only minimal instruction on how to align yourself in different poses.(It may also be a good idea to seek the advice of a doctor.)
Although yoga studios tend to frown on mirrors in classes (for good reason), occasionally practicing in front of a mirror(s) at home - particularly with a book like this one that includes "simple" poses and poses performed seated in a chair, which can be done safely while watching yourself - can be quite helpful in identifying habitual patterns of movement of which you're unaware - many of which stem from a belief that we can go deeper into a pose than our current range of motion and/or strength allows, causing us to sacrifice key points of alignment - ultimately reinforcing the very patterns of movement that are sources of pain and discomfort. You may be (unpleasantly) surprised to find that the pictures of some of these very basic poses - ones you "already know" and have "moved beyond" - look nothing like the reflection in the mirror when you actually see yourself in the poses.
Three other superior yoga books that I suggest (and I own upwards of 30) are (1) for beginners and people with limited range of motion [i.e., lacking flexibility], "The Runner's Yoga Book" by Jean Couch (2) for intermediate students "30 Essential Yoga Poses" by Judith Lasater and (3) for advanced students, teachers and anyone who wants a thorough physiological and anatomical understanding of the mechanics of yoga, "Anatomy of Hatha Yoga", by H. David Coulter.
Very Well Written & Helpful Book; Needs Accompanying DVD.......2007-08-09
Dr. Schatz has written an excellent book on back care, integrating a physician and Yoga teacher's viewpoint. Back physiology and mechanics are well explained and illustrated.
Explaining Yoga postures by text/book is hard and one really needs a teacher in person. Short of that video is helpful. Therefore, I wish Dr. Shaatz would either update the book with DVD/Videos or upload the videos on the Internet on sites like YouTube etc. to make her Yoga for Back Care more practical and useful.
Anybody with chronic back pain/problems will benefit from this book and gain understanding of the back pain; and get therepeutic benefit if they do the Yoga.
Extremely Helpful.......2006-08-13
I have scoliosis and this book has been a tremendous resource in understanding and caring for my condition. The book is a good start and it eventually got me interested in taking some yoga classes and exploring some of the different practices. I'm so glad I found this book; yoga has been a positive force in my life for some time now.
Real yoga, really good advice, well written.......2006-08-07
Lots of back pain books provide exercises, but this one takes them directly from the Iyenger Yoga method; Iyenger revolutionized Yoga from the 1960's to the present by applying contemporary knowledge of anatomy and physiology to the traditional and spiritual aspects of yoga. Teachers trained and certified in Iyenger Yoga are a 'cut' above others from my lengthy experience with Yoga practice. That said, dr. Schatz uses Iyenger's methods (Iyenger also wrote the intro) to design a comprehensive program for all types of back and neck problems; she also provides accurate and clear illustrations of the spine structure and related anatomy. The photos are very clear and easy to understand as are the instructions of asanas and restorative poses.. The book is the right length, size and format. Many back problems can be treated. This book offers programs for many of them; also included is a self-analysis of one's own current posture and alignment. This is no quick fix book; the programs she recommends may take a couple of years to 'work' but it's definitely worth it to live a more vigorous, pain reduced or pain free life.
Review by former physiology instructor and past back pain sufferer!.......2006-06-06
This is my favorite book for addressing back pain issues. It presents a great foundation in the basic anatomy of the back and then uses this information to develop the concepts that help people understand why back and neck pain occur and how to correct it.
The book contains progressive exercises and workouts of various lengths that use Iyengar yoga to address back pain. Each exercise is carefully explained and includes good tips on how to perform each correctly. I also like that it provides the rationale for each exercise and important points to focus on while performing each movement.
There are also chapters on specific problems. This is definitely a comprehensive reference and it has helped me a lot with my own back problems. In addition, it is an excellent overall introduction to yoga.
The author is a physician who had back problems herself. She is highly credible and treated her own back problems with the methods described. I recommend this book to anyone interested in an introduction to yoga or wanting to learn more about rehabilitating back and neck problems using yoga.
Finally, if you are looking for another book on this topic "The Pilates Back Book" by Tia Stanmore is also very good. It also starts out more gently and is somewhat more accessible. However, it's not nearly as comprehensive or as detailed in describing the exercises. I own and use both and recommend owning both to people who are serious about understanding and working with back issues. (
Personally, I also found Tai Chi helpful before I was ready to do yoga. However, I don't have a book I would recommend that would be a good standalone resource. If you go this route, it's probably best to find a good teacher who is also a physical therapist or at least has some knowledge of dealing with back and neck related issues.

Great book!.......2007-09-03
A small group of us chose to go throught the steps using this book. Any STEP work is a good idea. I believe this book is easy to understand and provides the guidelines needed to get the work done!!
The evolution behind the book .......2007-05-24
I havent gotten past the evolution of how we got to this stage where its become so serious for the Fellowship .
We have so many people who just dont have a clue of what the program is and what the Fellowship is .We have to know where we have been before we can deal with the present .
There Is A Hunger in AA.......2007-03-31
After having had the Back To Basics Beginners Meeting shared with me after several years of contented sobriety, I was excited to have found a perfect guide to help people in sharing the message of AA.This is a perfect tool to guide the sponsor/sponsee relationship in the direction needed to not only introduce the 12 steps but also to re-inforce the principles of AA in all our affairs.
The response from not only new members but also those with various degrees of continuous sobriety has been beyond my wildest expectations and show a definite hunger in the members of AA for a duplicateable program of recovery commited to the foundations of our program of "taking the steps" not just talking about them.
Very helpful and simple.......2007-02-15
Good book, and helpful guide to work the 12 steps, especially if done with a more experienced and sober "sharing partner". I couldn't do this by myself. Great history into A.A. a bit opinionated, but well worth the reading, and trying. Enjoy life... Look at the alternative.
Recommend Strongly.......2006-02-17
The history is well documented. The procedure is clear and we're seeing good results.

"Voluntary simplicity" has become a catch phrase for what seems to be a yearning for a simpler, more self-sufficient and economical way of living in the late 20th century. This book, first published in 1981 and recently updated, was probably many folks' first in-depth exposure to the idea of a simpler life, making things by hand, and enjoying a stronger sense of control over personal budgets, home projects, and lifestyles. Hundreds of projects are listed, illustrated in step-by-step diagrams and instructions: growing and preserving your own food, converting trees to lumber and building a home from it, traditional crafts and homesteading skills, and having fun with recreational activities like camping, fishing, and folk dancing without spending a lot of money. This book will have you dreaming and planning from the first page! -- Mark A. Hetts
Book Description
This how-to, user-friendly guide teaches self-sufficiency-covering all of life's essentials: shelter; alternative energy sources; growing and preserving food; home crafts; directions for making herbal remedies; and even home-grown entertainment.

What a great book.......2006-08-26
I have owned this book for 18 yrs and am buying another copy because I wore the 1st one out.It covers Just about everything a tinkering homeowner could want.It has a great amount of info useful to the homesteader or anyone interested in the way things used to be done.I have used it for raising chickens, grapes, gardening and making maple syrup.I also like the firewood section.I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes to tinker.
Best book ever for diagrams and pictures.......2006-06-29
I loved this book. I'd previously read many homesteading style books and had only been happy with one of them (Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living). This book is different in it's own special way. I didn't have as much printed information but the diagrams and pictures were just what we needed to get a few things started that the encyclopedia missed.
I'm adicted it's brilliant.......2006-02-17
I own the book since 1980 or 1981 it's red tried and red again. It's an absolute must for every one enjoying to trial and error and sometimes suceed at skills that where so common once and now seem so difficult.

12 simple secrets review.......2007-10-01
REALLY loved this book. Sometimes as a mom you lose sight of the important things, running around with sports, trying to be "mom of the year." Really nice way of making me grounded again, without condescending tones.
Finally!.......2006-08-10
Finally, a real book for real moms offering real practical guidance for raising real children! I should know. I'm a mom of nine (yes, 9) children, aged 5 to 17. I've bought, read, skimmed, and peeked in almost every mothering/parenting book there is out there, and never found one that really offered sound direction or reassurance until now. It's put everything I've learned about being a mom (so far) into a wonderful, clear, and uplifting format (easy to pick up where you left off and read when you can catch a moment), and teaches me so much more. It should be a mandatory "manual" for all mothers!
The other thing I love about this book is that it promotes the fact that as moms we need to take care of ourselves, pursue our own interests, and not loose our identity in our families. Something I've worked hard to do myself and one of my biggest secrets for being "successful" in my calling as a mother. This book not only encourages you to eliminate the "supermom" image from your life, but tells you how to do it. Then helps you develop your own individual identity as a mother and set up your own mission statement or mothering plan from what Borba calls "A Mother's Promise," based on the true needs of our children.
There is no cookie cutter technique for parenting. Each family is unique and each child has their own individual needs, responses, attitudes, temperments, etc. This book helps you to use your mother instincts, as well as your own experiences, to create a plan that can work for your own family and each of your children as the individuals that they are.
I found this book at my church bookstore, but there is nothing necessarily religious or spiritual about it (other than respecting mothers' instincts). And yet, it doesn't offend in any way, and remarkably supports every parenting "style" from traditional to liberal, religious or cultural/ethnic based.
Dr. Michele Borba definately did a wonderful job with this book and my hat is off to her for being able to consolidate so much information she's acquired over the years from interviews, work, and research. People have been telling me for a long time that I should write a book about mothering (which I could only do about mothering my own children), but now I can and will simply recommend this incredible book.
Excellent.......2006-07-07
This book is about getting back to the basic principles of mothering. Borba uses real-life scenarios to help you understand how to employ the 12 "secrets." Also included in each and every chapter are sidebars with ideas and tips from mothers, a comprehensive list of books for more information on that topic, and a small area for you to jot down your thoughts. Borba says she wants this to be the last parenting book you read for a little while, and this is certainly the case for me. Barring any special problems you may have with your child that require further research and reading, it's a good bet you'll read 12 Simple Secrets and then take a break from other parenting books (especially the supermom, guilt-ridden books and magazines that seem to permeate the Parenting section in bookstores these days). This book is a breath of fresh air. I recommend you have a notebook handy as you read so you can jot down all the great ideas you'll get.
Brings joy, sanity, and success !.......2006-04-05
A most powerful and user friendly book that makes moms think, "Stop the motherhood frenzy and get a real life!" Understand how to connect with your children in a more simplified way that will balance your life and bring more joy, sanity, and success into both being a mom and creating a stronger family. Dr. Borba's back to basics approach, using extraordinary examples of moms whose journeys through motherhood took them to places they never knew existed within
themselves, helps mothers identify who they really are and what is truly important. A must read for those who want the recipe for being a great mother by raising happy kids!
How to be a great mom - in one book!.......2006-04-05
12 Simple Secrets Real Moms Know is the "how-to" book for any mom or mom-to-be wondering how to raise happy, caring, well-adjusted children. The best thing about it? It requires no special tools other than the ones you already possess! This book contains all the guidance and wisdom you need for great mothering skills that will ensure your kids are happy kids.
Book Description
When Janet Campbell Matson was on the verge of becoming a grandmother for the first time, this mom of four began jotting down notes for her expectant daughter. As Matson began writing about the rules of discipline as practiced by her mother and herself, more and more information surfaced; she soon realized she had enough material for a book.
Back to Basics Discipline: A Program to Raise Extraordinary Children is the result of generations of success in bringing up children. Matson, who is a mother and grandmother, has used the experience of the generations before her--as well as her own--to write this no-nonsense, down-to-earth approach to parenting. What started out as a few notes, quickly became an easy-to read guide on raising well-mannered children.
In this invaluable resource, you'll learn:
-How to make sure your children are of good character
-When to use a timeout or a spanking¡ªand how to know which is appropriate
-What five behaviors should be strictly forbidden
-The importance of sibling relationships¡ªand how to nurture them
-How to create a warm, loving, and happy home environment
Back to Basics Discipline will take the fear and guilt out of discipline and replace them with confidence and commitment. It is a must for parents and anyone looking for a way to raise exceptional children.
Customer Reviews:
The most straightforward "how to" manual for loving your toddler.......2007-02-26
There are two books that have made a profound impact on me as a first time parent of a now 17.5 month old: The Continuum Concept by Jean Liedloff and this. Janet Matson explains in no nonsense terms exactly how to avoid what Jean Liedloff describes as being too child-centered. Back to Basics Discipline is so well written I was able to implement her ideas almost immediately - with great results right away. I now spend my days loving my toddler and looking forward to spending time with him.
Helped a new mom feel......in control!!.......2007-02-09
I picked up this book because of the two good reviews listed previously. My 19 month old had really begun to have some tantrums and I would find myself either over-reacting, not reacting at all or just feeling inadequate at my ability to control my own child. After reading this book, I immediately felt empowered and in control. I even felt results from my son on the first day. My lack of knowledge in how to discipline had enabled his tantrums and the minute I gained control, his sense of security returned. This book reminded me of my parents discipline program and that made me feel at ease. You may not agree with all of her logic but I think the author makes some profound points (usually accompanied by a personal story) on why her discipline tactics work. My only critisism of the book was that I longed for more scenarios but the author wanted to relay the need for a parent(s) to take the individuality of the child into account. I long for an independent, honest, respectful, and successful child, teenager and adult and with this book, I feel I am on my way.
How To Control Children & Retain Their Respect.......2004-04-23
"Back To Basics Discipline" is the best book I have ever read about successful parenting. A step by step method is furnished that any parent can understand and apply to raising their own children. The noteworthy work will open the eyes of many parents about instilling self-control, honesty, and respect in their offspring. The book is a totally complete guide for creating a positive home environment blossoming with love and respect. This is a must-read for parents desiring their children to be controlled in a loving environment and growing up to be good citizens.
Raising Confident, Responsible Children.......2004-04-15
Janet Matson writes common sense advice about a subject often fraught with misinformation and flavor-of-the-month approaches. Every person who has children, might have them someday, or is just around children on a daily basis needs to own this easy-to-read, practical handbook for growing happy children into productive adults. I loved every chapter, and I totally agree with all Janet's advice. Teachers, as well as parents, will find helpful ideas on how to achieve control without crushing a child's spirit. This is a great gift for potential parents! I am a parent, grandparent, and high school teacher, and I will be implementing Janet's advice in my classroom tomorrow. What's more, I'm going to recommend it to some parents because this book will help even those with teenage children!

This is a good book for beginner restauranteurs.......2001-06-07
If you have been in the restaurant business for any length of time you do not need this book. It does not cover anything new. If you are looking for new ideas to satisfy your guests, or for details that you may be overlooking in quality service, this is not the book for you.

I found this book very informative and easy to read. The thrust of the book centers on attention to detail, the task that seems to get lost or forgetten in the day-to-day operations of many restaurants! A great find!
Book Description
If it seems like today's retrievers are becoming increasingly hyperactive and hard to train, well, they are, says Robert Milner in this new book on retriever training. And the fault is not only in the breeding but in the training, both of which render a dog better suited for field-trialing than hunting. To reverse this trend of difficult dogs and difficult training methods, Milner offers a system every bird hunter can easily understand and follow. This back-to-basics approach teaches how to pick a pup that will likely be calm and obedient, and then how to train that pup on the basics of steadiness and obedience to create the perfect hunting and at-home companion. In Retriever Training, Milner has taken the latest scientific research into how dogs learn and combined it with his own commonsense training methods. The result is an approach that is as effective as it is easy. For the hunter who wants a calm, steady, and obedient retriever, there's no better training method. (6 1/4 x 9 1/4, 208 pages, b&w photos, illustrations)

Perfection!.......2003-12-13
It is very difficult for some to "think outside the box" with regards to training their dogs. Sometimes one needs to explore the results of the most popular training methods and realize the room for significant improvement. We trained our first dog using these familiar methods. She would retreive anything, anytime, anywhere. She would bring anything she could find to anyone who would throw it to her. She was as far from a "steady" dog as you could find.
Now, using Mr. Milners techniques (which are very different than the "popluar techniques") we have an incredibly obedient and steady young lab. The difference is amazing. Both dogs came from similar lines (field trial)and they couldn't be more different. It works, and works well. Very easy to read and implement. You must buy this book! You will not regret it.
Six stars from us!!
I Recommend This Training Guide.......2002-04-04
I bought this book soon after bringing home my lab six months ago. I don't hunt. But I figure that if hunting is what this dog was bred to do, I would spend some time giving him something of the experience. We do walk the forest preserves and farmer's fields frequently.
The methods are based on understanding trainer and pup's behaviors, simple obedience commands, creating a steady dog, and training in habits that you want your dog to have. The lessons are set out as self-paced exercises. They are described concisely and clearly. I have found them to be easy and fun. My pup seems to like them, too.
This book is very enjoyable to read. I have read the chapters over and over again, getting some new insight nearly every time. We still have a ways to go before we have mastered all of the skills, but we have the confidence to keep trying because Milner's book has produced successes along the way we've passed.
Good...BUT, "it ain't all that".......2002-02-28
Mr. Milner's training methods are fair to the dog, will not hurt him,and stresses the importance of the dog's self-control and steadiness. But, I feel that the book is a bit overpriced for the little info. that it includes. Many, many things were covered more than once in the book. I kept thinking to myself..."didn't I just read that somewhere"...flip back a few pages..."yep, sure did"...almost verbatim. Too much "white space" on each page and between paragraphs.
Excellent approach to training your retriever......................2001-12-19
We have several books on the subject, all have their strenghts. Some are very technical, especially those written by/for field trialers.
This book's approach is excellent. If we had a dog trained to this books standards we would be very pleased indeed.
The book is well written and easy to follow/review.
Practical...............might be a good word to describe this book. Game Dog (R Wolters) was the favorite until we read this one.
Steady goes it.......2001-09-01
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am presently training my first labrador retriever to be a hunting dog and this book gave me a different approach than many of the regular authors waterfowl hunters read in order to train their own dogs: Richard Wolters, Bill Tarant, etc. I found this book to be well written and full of examples that really hit home after I had a chance to take a step back and access my own weaknesses as an amateur trainer, as well as, the weaknesses of my retriever. It offered a means to improve not only my abilities but also a positive manner in which my dog responded well to what I was asking her to do. I felt the book was well organized and the time the author takes to hammer home the importance of training a steady dog is well worth the read.
After reading several books on the subject, I feel that the more knowledge you can arm yourself with, the better results you will achieve in your training efforts. I don't believe there is one book that is the end all be all of dog training. That said, I would recommend this book to any amateur trainer that is more concerned with producing a confident and capable dog for the hunting field than with winning ribbons at a hunt test.

Book Description
In this live recording Iyanla Vanzant shares how we can put our principles into practice by getting back to basics. To live a fully realized life, we must get back to basics and act on Faith. Faith is what we are. It is Faith that gets us through adversity. Faith gets us on purpose. It is Faith that allows us to pull the power down and not get knocked down by the conditions and the circumstances of the world. Faith!
It's not that we don't have Faith, it's that we've forgotten our basics. In order to act on Faith, Iyanla challenges us to get back to basica, and more out of mediocrity into mastery.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Awesome Learning Tool !!!!.......2006-12-15
This so-much-more-than-a-speech was recorded live before a packed audience at Detroit's Unity Temple. I first discovered it on tape through my county's library back in 2002 and was so impressed I purchased a copy. I've listened to it so many times that this year for Christmas, I am buying 3 copies on CD for friends of mine. Packed with humor, ageless wisdom ( i.e. the things that Grandma taught you, but you were so busy rolling your eyes at her that you didn't listen, 'cause she was old and got on your nerves!)and divinely-sparked instruction, Iyanla challenges each of us to own our right to be called women of grace and dignity. I have grown so much by applying what she speaks of to my life that all I can say is, "Thank God for Iyanla!".
EVERYONE SHOULD LISTEN TO THIS TAPE.......2005-04-22
I LOVE THIS TAPE, I LISTEN TO IT ALMOST EVERY DAY. THIS TAPE TRANSFORMED BY THINKING, HOW I LIVE LIFE AND HOW I DEAL WITH OTHERS! THIS IS FOR MEN AND WOMEN OF ANY COLOR - IT SHOULD BE CALLED A GUIDEBOOK FOR THE HUMAN CONDITION.
