Briday Gowns: How to make the Wedding Dress of your Dreams.......2007-05-15
The book arrived quickly and in great condition. It looks like it has lots of information to help with making my daughter's wedding gown...I'll begin sewing in September.
bridal gowns; how to make the wedding dress of your dreams.......2006-08-07
Very informative I will use the book alot
Wonderful Resource.......2006-02-01
I am in the Bridal Alterations business and also sew weddings on the side. I am just starting out and wanted to learn more about the insides of wedding gowns. I have used other books by these women (Fit for Real People) to teach sewing classes in local fabric stores and knew they'd put out a great product. Inside they tell you what fabrics to use for interlining, interfacing, step by step construction, patern fitting, and more. There's even a checklist for constructing a wedding gown and yardage and instructions for making petticoats. I REALLY recommend this book!
A Good Guide, But Know How to Sew.......2002-12-12
I was toying with the idea of making my own dress and bought this book. The author is very knowledgeable and the text is well-written. However, if you are a novice you do not want to ACTUALLY attempt a dress without either a.)guidance, or b.)other books to walk you through. This is written for those who truly understand patterns and sewing. However, if you don't sew it is a great book to understand what things you should be looking for if you are having it made by a dressmaker, and the types of fabric/necklines/veils, etc. If you're expecting a step-by-step this is not the book for you.
Wonderful!.......2000-06-07
Well written, clearly illustrated, great on all the details. Obviously written by a pro who is very creative! Highly recommended even if you don't plan to sew your own--you will get lots of ideas to have the perfect dress made for your special day!

This book has been wonderful for my 14 yr. old daughter. She learned to sew with the Sew Fast Sew Easy book and moved into this book. Now she's reconstructing all sorts of crazy stuff. It's a fun and creative outlet for my kid. I'm happy she has picked up a positive hobby.

I bought the Sew Fast Sew Easy book for my girlfriend and she's been making all sorts of stuff. On the company website they have online classes. She took the men's underwear class and now I'll never run out of briefs. She also did the lacy tanga panty video for herself. Thank you Sew Fast Sew Easy! So I got her this book to move onto. I hit a home run with it. She now watches project runway with a new appreciation.
nothing but the best.......2007-10-08
I love this book. I'm totally stoked on the projects I've created with it. I've learned a lot from this book unlike another boring sewing book my mom gave me, "Sewing for dummies". This is a rad beginner book as well as alterations and fittings. Any level of sewing should be able to get something from it. I also think the Sew Fast Sew Easy book is a great book to have first.

I got the Sew Fast Sew Easy book and loved it so I bought this book also. It was cheaper than some of the others and well worth it. I had a really good time doing the projects in this book and learned some more on tailoring and heming. This would be a great gift for anyone who likes to get creative and mess around.

AWESOME BOOK!!!!.......2007-09-29
If you ever wanted to make your own patterns, this is the book for you. It is well-written and easy to follow, geared toward the home sewer like myself. I don't use any of my other pattern-making books anymore...don't need to! It's all there!!!! Well worth the cost when you think in terms of finally having something fit the first time around and do not need to make any alterations. Love it!!!
Everything you need to get started making patterns.......2007-08-31
This book gives a beginner all of the information they need in order to draft a pattern based on any person's form so that they can then continue on and alter the pattern to any style they choose. The only complaint that I have is that is a bit outdated, although the instructions are still perfect for the task.
One of the best.......2007-08-10
I've taken classes in flat pattern design, and this is the absolute best text I've encountered yet ... and I have several such texts.
Go for it, if you want to understand not only the what but the why of what you're doing
Sparce and Murky.......2007-07-21
I bought this book with excitement, and got some aid in patternmaking. But it's nothing to write home about. I never, ever made a pattern before, and this book didn't help very much. While it has a moderate amount of patterns, they are all variations of one another and the diagrams are very, very sparce. They illustrate the "basic" pattern and show you how to spread it out to make a "new" pattern. It isn't very clear, especially to someone who has no training in design whatsoever. It also lacks a lot of description and uses otherwise unfamiliar terms with candor. The author assumes a lot about the reader.
I would recommend a more extensive book, or take a course at a college.
Good Basic Information.......2007-06-11
This is a good book for the beginning pattern maker. Has all the basic information needed to draft your first patterns.
I have used this book to draft the basic slopers for my daughters and then to alter them for a variety of styles. The only major drawback was that the information is geared to adult sizes and does not include information such as standard ease amounts for childrens patterns. Also did not include much information on drafting patterns for stretch fabrics.
I would buy this book again.

They offer sewing classes to the public in New York City and have been for the past 15 years. I found that they had online video classes and my girlfriend took the men's underwear video. She wont stop making me briefs and I love it. She also made some lacy tanga panties for herself from another one of their videos. Thank you Sew fast Sew easy!!
Totally Tubular.......2007-10-08
This book is radical. My mom got me a couple sewing books. This is by far my fav. The other she got me, "sewing for dummies" was boring and didn't include patterns to work on. This book taught me a lot and I moved on to the Rip It! book which I also love. Do the skirt pattern and add a belt, it's so hot right now. I love wearing the clothes I've made to school. You won't be dissapointed

Excellent book!!!.......2007-05-14
This is a great book for seamstresses with some experience(I think it would be too hard for beginners. It would be good if you have some comprehenesion on sizing(drafting patterns yourself for example)but that isn't even necessary.I think it would be easier though:)
Frances Grimble gives clear instructions for changing patterns to size and even to different body shapes(large bust, short back etc.
You do need to take some time for this, but well, you'll have an authentic pattern in your hands, how great is that?;)And there are so many in this book! I was having a very hard time finding real historical patterns in The Netherlands(so far found one french journal from 1902)and I feel like a kid in a candystore now.:)I
<3 this book already.
You can make a complete outfit, from undergarments to overgarments.
If you have some sewing experience and you love this period it is really a great book!
Amazon's service is excellent too. It didn't take very long for the item to arrive(from US to the Netherlands)(with one step faster shipping, expidited?)it was even a lot faster then the estimated arrival time.
Fashions of the Gilded Age, Volume 1: Undergarments, Bodices, Skirts, Overskirts, Polonaises, and Day Dresses 1877-1882.......2006-08-16
This book is wonderful. I believe I own every book Frances Grimble has written and anxiously await more. The variety of patterns is amazing and allows the experienced sewer to create their own designs from various components, like sleeves and collars. This sure beats trying to decipher the patterns in an original 1890's issue of Harpers!
as good as all the other Frances Grimble books.......2006-03-22
This book contains patterns for the following:
corsets, hoopskirts and bustles (some)
underclothing and negligee wear (quite a few)
day and evening skirts (only about four)
day bodices (quite a few)
evening bodices (some)
overskirts (some)
polonaises (some)
day dresses (quite a few)
some = around ten
quite a few = over 20
I would recommend this book for anyone who likes victorian costuming. It not only works as a pattern book, but as a source book, having lots of pictures you can use for reference. Even if you just look through it, it really can help you understand the styles of that era.
What An Excellent Book!!.......2005-01-13
The pictures and descriptions within the book are an excellent reference if you are researching and intending on recreating one of these beautiful designs. Advanced knowledge of sewing skills is a must for those who wish to recreate these (definantly not for the novice sewer). Frances Grimble, you've done it again. Please keep them coming. I will buy every book you put out.
Wow!.......2004-09-29
There's just so MUCH material in this book--so many pictures and patterns and so many pages of hard-to-find information. Women's styles of the period were intricate, with separate bodices, overskirts, and skirts, or with polonaises (a bodice with the overskirt attached) and skirts. This book separates patterns for bodices, skirts, overskirts, and polonaises to mix and match however you want. It also gives patterns for whole dresses, but you can mix their components too.
There are far more patterns for EVERYTHING than I've ever seen anywhere else. There were many, many ways of cutting and draping an overskirt or a polonaise. In this book it's amazing to see fashion plates of overskirts that look similar in the plates, but the cut and drape shown by the pattern pieces is quite different. There are even 19 patterns for chemises.
This book will keep me busy for a long time!

Two Stitch Knits.......2007-09-21
This book was not what I had expected, however I'm sure it will come in handy
Very nice, but..........2006-11-14
I think the title made me expect something different. The two stitch thing means knit and purl. Hello? Are there any others? That said, it's a gorgeous book, and the lack of 5 stars is only for the titale, which I found misleading.
Deanna Van Velsen.......2006-09-25
This book contains patterns for clothes and accessories for men, women, children and babies, and also some homewares. All the yarns used are Rowan yarns, and some could be substituted with 8ply or 4 ply yarns (American fingering and sport weight) while some use bulky yarn. My favourite is the sweater shown on the cover which uses a DK weight yarn, has a nice v neck and collar and measures up to 119 cm bust. All the patterns are classic in style.

Excellant, if difficult.......2007-09-19
As a director this was an excellant resource book, however my seamstresses found it next to impossible to figure out the patterns. It would take someone quite comfortable in making patterns. The directions are there and could be worked out with enough effort and trial. Still, as a resource it's great and was quite useful. The designs and details alone are worth the price.

Wonderful.......2006-08-07
Good book for creating fashions of the era .And the price for each pattern was a price I could not pass up.I love the patterns and clothes of days gone past and this is no exception.
well up to Frances Grimble's high standards.......2006-03-22
This book features patterns for dresses, skirts, shirts, jackets, underclothing (etc.) for the years 1905 and 1907-1909.
It contains:
20 (patterns) from 1905
22 from 1907
21 from 1908
23 from 1909
This is a good book, well up to Frances Grimble's high standards. It contains many patterns but can also double as a sourcebook, since it contains many pictures of clothes from fashion plates. I would recommend buying it, but make sure to research these years to find out if you really want it. Remember, this is mid-late edwardian.
Wonderful pattern source.......2005-10-23
Being a costumer, I'm frustrated that there aren't enough "authentic" patterns, with the fine details that they had, being produced out there, except for the "Halloween-type" costumes. This is a great resource for patterns that have the look and period-correct construction techniques. Ms. Grimble has chosen some truly beautiful ones from real vintage patterns to include in her book. I haven't had a chance to learn how to scale the patterns up yet, but look forward to it.

Yea! More pattern books!.......2006-03-01
Frances Grimble shares her meticulous vision with us once again. A great two book series full of facinating information and patterns galore. I cannot wait to clothe many a pretty lady using them. Not for the faint of heart. The patterns are period correct and I would advise an advanced skill level, or a great deal of patience. Always do a mock up. Remember these are patterns of the age. So start at the skin and work your way out to a glorious new costume.
Enjoy.
This is Volume 2.......2004-11-07
This is a great book, but you should know that it is not a second edition of Fashions of the Gilded Age, Volume 1. It is the second volume of the anthology, and a different book with all different patterns. The title is actually Fashions of the Gilded Age, Volume 2: Evening, Bridal, Sports, Outerwear, Accessories, and Dressmaking 1877-1882. It's just as good as Volume 1, none of the information is the same except the intro on how to use the patterns, and the dressmaking manual is really unique.
I heard both volumes were published but it took me awhile to find the second one on Amazon because it was mislisted. So I thought I'd warn other people.
Wow! Continued.......2004-09-29
I just reviewed Volume 1, where I said the book contains a huge selection of patterns. Volume 2 focuses on patterns for evening dresses, bridal wear, sports wear, and outer wear. The chapters on accessories and trimmings contain some needlework patterns, embroidery and so on. I figure if I don't do the handwork I'll still have learned a lot about buying appropriate materials.
I bought both volumes, but they are organized so you can use them separately. Both contain the instructions for using the book and the special rulers that allow you to draft patterns to fit you. They also both have a big glossary, a bibliography, and two indexes.
Volume 2 has something really special though--a dressmaking manual. The book says it was rewritten from numerous rare original sources that are listed in the bibliography. But it's been rewritten so it doesn't read that way; you can't tell where any source begins or ends. That makes the manual a lot easier to use. And it's so long it could have been published as a book by itself. I'm glad to have it, because I've never been able to find a comprehensive sewing manual for this period. It even has corset-making instructions (the corset patterns are in Volume 1).
Both volumes are very well edited and produced. This is not a cheap printing job.
Anyone who does Old West reenactment or Victorian teas would love these books!

A must-have Edwardian reference.......2002-02-15
I make custom reproduction clothing and I have found The Voice of Fashion to be extremely helpful. The pattern selection is very impressive and attractive. I have the Janet Arnold book and the Norah Waugh book, but this book has many more patterns for this era. I can find one for any style the customer wants, rather than having to take some basic pattern and alter it. I just let them leaf through the book and pick one out. By using the special rulers I can enlarge the pattern to fit any customer with no (or hardly any) alterations-these patterns fit better than most commercial sized patterns. The rulers are easy to use, you just follow the instructions. The book also has instructions for early 20th century sewing methods, and lots of fashion columns on fabrics and trims. I consider it indispensable to my business. If you wanted to make even one period outfit, this book would still probably save you money, because otherwise you'd have to buy separate patterns for the dress, the underclothes, the outer wear etc.
