Customer Reviews:
This is the best book I have ever read!.......2007-10-11
This book is very well laid out and easy to follow instructions to build the greatest custom cabinets. This is the best book I own
Beginner to Expert, Something for all........2007-06-12
I am a firm believer in the KISS method of doing things. (Keep It Simple Stupid") Every step is covered in this book so that anyone can learn from it. The "Build Like A Pro" series of books are all laid out like this one. The "Expert Tips" are great. They show you short cuts to help you do the jobs right, but in less time. This is stuff you only learn by doing the job everyday. They are trade secrets.
Building Kitchen Cabinets.......2007-06-11
This book covers all the esentials of traditional cabinet making.
It was well done, but nothing very revealing or greatly helpfull for me.
Building Kitchen Cabinets .......2007-06-08
I am a new fan of wood work. This book has showed me step by step instructions. Using and knowing carpentry tools is a piece of cake. Designing the product was easy. Thumbs Up!!!
Excellent introduction.......2007-05-24
This book is clear and concise. It covers all the basic of building kitchen cabinets and more. It is aimed at the hobbyist or the small shop.
The book cover all the aspect of building kitchen cabinets wihtout getting into lengthy details which make it a perfect introduction on the topics.
If you have no experience on the topic, don't expect beeing able to build your own cabinets after reading this book. You will however get a good idea on the work that would have to be done.
I found the chapter on finishing too short and somewhat misleading. Finishing kitchen cabinets is very demanding but the author do not insist enough on the difficulty of getting a finish that is durable enough for kitchen cabinet.
Book Description
Building Frameless Kitchen Cabinets" is a complete building textbook for 32mm European style kitchen and bathroom cabinets. This long awaited book details design, hardware, joinery, 32mm system design, edge banding, cabinet doors, as well as full color photos and illustrations on uppers, base units, corner and tall cabinets. The full building and set up system is explained in detail!
Customer Reviews:
Decent information.......2007-01-05
Do not kid yourself; the 32mm system of cabinet building is very complex. It was designed as a way to standardize cabinet construction and to use mass-production machinery.
Translating this to the smaller shop and making use of standard tools is not easy. It is an unforgiving system where all holes and measurements have to be PERFECT or it fails.
It also turns out that there are deviations in the standards and the way builders interpret them.
While this book certainly is valuable and gives a nice overview, it is short on the details small shops or home-owners really need. For example, the attachement of drawer sliders and the use of different drawer mechanisms is glossed over.
Get the book, but be prepared to spend a lot of time researching other sources. I ended up with some really nice projects, but it weren't easy, as they say.
expected more.......2006-03-20
This is one of the few books on Frameless cabinets. I expected more content but the book did not satisfy me.
Good information, but ...........2005-08-19
Mr. Prolux is certainly an authority in 32mm cabinet design. If you look for information you should be able to find it somewhere in this book.
The main problem is weak structure of the book with boring repetitions of what was said just a couple of pages or paragraphs ago. Good writing should keep you wanting to turn next page all the time, regardless of what the book is about - this one doesn't!
Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with information in this book, it's only the amateurish structuring and general style of writing which gets in the way. So content - 4 stars, style, structuring - 2 stars.
All in all mediocre 3

Save your money and don't buy this book.......2007-10-11
This book is old school and is way outdated as far as making cabinets. This book is very hard to follow and laid out very poorly. If you want a good book to make cabinets look into "Building Kitchen Cabinets" UDO SCHMIDT
BTKC-BUY THIS BOOK.......2007-09-04
Definitely the best money I have spent on a cabinet book. Tolpin really provides a LOT of valuable information that can be used for DECADES to come.
From what I gather through my readings, Tolpin is a traditionalist / purist at heart, but, he understands the necessity to produce time and resource efficient designs. He provides instruction on both sides of the spectrum: Fast and Effective as well as traditional and effective (a little something for both). In this way, he is able to speak to the enthusiast that is interested in making a traditional set of cabinets, and the professional that is interested in producing a quality set of cabinets more quickly.
I also gather that he really enjoys teaching others his thoughts, shortcuts, time saving jigs that you can really use and appreciate (especially if you have been busting head trying to do it another way). This fact is what really wants me to buy more of his books. His service to carpentry in general is extraordinary; he is a true teacher of carpentry and advises young carpenters in almost every page of this book.
I especially enjoyed making and using most of the jigs he describes. In one chapter he outlines more than 5 jigs. Having built them (extremely easy to make), I have already put them to use in more than one woodworking session and will continue to do so in the future because they are so useful.
If you're interested in cabinet making, buy this book. If you're tight on money, buy a used copy. The point is to buy this book and read this book. If you don't like to read, buy this book because the illustrations can explain a lot too. Building one cabinet will pay for the book.
Highly rated but disappointing.......2007-04-12
The hand written drawings are poorly done and lack significant detail. The photo illustrations are of good quality but are again limited in their application to the building process. Overall descriptions of the building process are scanty at best. Woodworkers interested in learning kitchen cabinet construction would be better served by reading Jere Cary's book; Building Your Own Kitchen Cabinets by the Taunton Press.
Great book, if you have the tools.......2007-03-15
This book is for persons that will build more than a kitchen alone. You will need quite some precision tools to match the craftmanship illustrated in this book and obviously you have to be handy using these tools. For the rest the book is very detailed and gives plenty of ideas and tips and tricks.
Simple Step by Step Instructions.......2006-03-01
Lists the tools and the measurement techniques on how to make simple traditional cabinets that look great. It is best used with Building Kitchen Cabinets by Udo Schmidt. They cover slightly different techniques using different tools. Between the two books, I was able to mix and match techniques to fit my set of tools. If you had to get only one book, this is the better book of the two.

Customer Reviews:
This book should be free.......2007-02-27
It is my own fault for not reading the entire description of this book, but it is not what I first thought it was. This book simply has different layouts for stock cabinets your could buy (for example at Home Depot). I should think that manufacturers of these cabinets could give you a book like this for free to help you decide layouts. So, you have a book of hundreds of different arrangements of cabinets, and you'll probably find 1 or 2 that you actually like or need. It does seem to leave a lot of the figuring, ie measuring to fit, to you. If not free, this book should be like $9. I gave 3 stars because if you want lots of ideas on how to arrange cabinets for all areas of the house, this book serves its purpose. However, if I really rated its value to me, I'd say 1 star, maybe half. Can I return this??
Almost meaningless.......2007-02-14
This book seemed meaningless to me. As others have noted, it is basically a very long sequence of rather poor line drawings and very little else. Very few low quality pictures are included; that is a pity because they could help provide some inspiration or guide your design. And fairly little know-how information is provided for do-it-yourself folks - the author recommends using professional installers. For most people, cabinet manufacturer websites and/or a visit to your local Home Depot or Lowe's kitchen design center will be much more useful than this book.
Expected more photographs and instructions.......2006-11-05
This book contains almost no photographs of finished projects. There are hardly any diagrams of the intermediate steps, and the instructions are minimalistic at best. This book assumes a reasonable knowledge of cabinet installation techniques; however, persons who possess such skills would largely find this book unnecessary. What you do get in this book is lots of line drawings of how to stack and arrange cabinets in different configurations, but these drawings are much like the ones you can get through the design services that are provided by Lowe's, Home Depot, and other major home supply stores.
A better choice would be "Built-In Furniture: A Gallery of Design Ideas".
Wonderful ideas!.......2005-11-29
500 pages of cabinet designes in line drawing format! If you get one idea from this book it is worth the price, and believe me, there are many ideas you can use. I have been designing cabinets for a year now and this book has added to my ability to generate good designs for my clients.
Do not confuse illustrations with photographs........2005-10-21
The only color photograph is on the cover. This is a big book with 500 pages, hundreds of drawings depicting many layouts and a clear list of cabinets needed along with additional materials required to complete each layout. Each of the twelve chapters focuses on a specific area such as bedrooms, baths, beverage centers, entertainment centers and utility areas. The author offers many design variations for each area.
The strength of this book is the huge variety of designs shown for each project area. The author illustrates many clever ways to use stock cabinets to create a variety of custom looks. The weakness for me is the lack of any color photographs to help visualize the results in a finished projects. This is a great resource of concepts for professional designers or decorators who have the imagination to know how drawings translate to finished results.

Cabinets and Countertops (complete construction).......2005-07-24
This book has a huge amount of information but it isn't in a reader friendly format. "To many words not enough pictures and easy to understand examples"
I want to build some Kitchen Cabinets not build a Business.......2002-01-03
I bought the book hoping to see a step-by-step approach to build my own kitchen cabinets. I found in the book a well detailed treatice on woods, cabinet styles, psychology of dealing with customers of various monetary means, tools, table saws, jointery, and a lot of stuff that I really don't care about. I also found out about 32mm European construction that is still a mystery to me. Who cares????
The real story on this book.......2001-11-13
To qualify myself and my comments, I offer this.
I am a modestly accomplished woodworker and a kitchen cabinet hanging expert. I have personally hung over 200 kitchens from layout, demolition, plumbing, electrical; To completion.
This book falls far short of delivering on its title or description. "Cabinets and Countertops" should cover exactly that. It doesn't.
This is a 450pg text, 40 pages are devoted to an cursory explanation of joints. Not a problem for me, but if you don't know the caveats of these different joints, figure out yourself. You won't learn how to make any of them either.
6 pages cover drawer making. 30 pages are in a chapter called "cabinet construction, but it must be mislabled. The meat of this chapter is a pair of exploded view drawings of a cabinet, and a lecture on being organized.
9 pages cover countertops. Not the construction of countertops, not the differents kinds of countertops. Just the terrible advice that you should buy a POST-FORM countertop from a dealer, and what color it should be. I wouldn't even consider a laminate counter for my kitchen.
The rest of this book is very general, plebeian advice on a myriad of topics. Considering the source of this advice, it should be discarded.
I am unhappy with the standard cabinets available and prefer not paying 40 grand or more with an independent shop. I looked to this book to fill the small holes I have in my skills to accomplish this myself. It doesn't even scrape the surface, and is unworthy of the shelf space it occupies, let alone the purchase price.
Great Handbook for Cabinet Construction.......2000-07-13
This book really does cover it all - from outfitting your workshop to installation. It is well illustrated with B&W photographs and drawings of about everything he is writing about. There is a prioritized list of tools & equipment as well as advice on choosing a workspace. He reviews a large number of tools, which was nice as he confirmed my choice of a JET tablesaw as appropriate.
He also lists common dimensions of appliances you will need to build around and has examples of CAD drawings in many styles. Construction techniques are covered as well as which tools work best for each task. He has whole sections on kitchen workspace layout and installation methods.
If you are thinking of building kitchen cabinets for fun or for a living, this is the only book you need to see how to do it. If you are looking for lots of color pictures of creative designs, look elsewhere. This is mostly a technical manual, written in a conversational style that makes it interesting to read. It is an essential book in your woodworking library.
Terrific resource!.......2000-06-26
I've read a good many books on this topic lately and would definitely rate this as one of the best. Well organized and informative, this book provides a wealth of information to both the novice and the professional cabinetmaker. I highly recommend it!

Good Reference.......2007-01-09
I met Jere at a book signing at a local wood store some 20-25 years ago. He was from the Seattle area. Jere spent his career as a shop teacher at high school and junior colleges. This book started as handouts for people wanting to build cabinets while taking the
open shop classes the schools sometime offer. It is sad that just as the book was taking off, Jere died of a massive heart attack while boating in the San Juans (Puget Sound). I imagine that if Jere had lived it would have been updated. I keep a copy in my reference library and one at work. I recommend to anyone remodeling a kitchen, even if they will have the cabinets made. I repeatedly buy copies because they disappear. I cannot think of a higher praise for a book than to say it is steal able.
This book gets a bad rap.......2005-01-17
As a proffessional that does the occasional kitchen, I offen go back to this book for review. This book is not filled with shiny pictures and style ideas but is loaded with excellent information on layout and construction. I highly reccommend this book for someone who has to get it right the first time.
Outdated Info!.......2002-07-24
For a book written in 1983 I believe the information is a little outdated for todays woodworker. No mention of Euro cabinets, which is the majority of what is built now days. The book has some good information but all in all needs to be updated.
Not for the novice!.......2002-06-15
Poorly illistrated an much too much text for a relatively simple project. Not worth it's price. If you are a novice interested in basic cabinet building, I highly recommend "Better Homes and Gardens Step-By-Step Cabinets & Shelves". It covers everything from tools to lumber to construction and installation, including countertops and drawer construction. It's a MUCH better book than this one! Don't waste you money on this book!
Poor.......2002-06-04
I'm not sure what to say other than you will not build anything from this book. Poor illustrations and lacks in construction technique.
Customer Reviews:
Great Manual - Easy to Follow.......2000-01-14
The first 9 chapters of the manual outline the elements that must be considered when establishing a business. These chapters have condensed the topics, on which other authors have written volumes, to a reasonable level that allows a person to evaluate his situation. It may help that person to decide yea or nay on moving to the next step. I have an advantage over most since my business is the result of an expanded hobby after retiring as a professional engineer and not for my livelihood.
Chapters 10 to 18 of the manual are very readable, understandable and reasonably comprehensive for laying out, cutting, assembling, finishing and installing kitchen cabinets. The combination of European construction and North American styling produces cabinets that are sound and attractive. The manual was my 'bible' when I built my first cabinets and installed them. The various tables such as thoser on pages 68, 75, 76 and 85 coupled with the diagrams eliminates the need to do calculations in cutting pieces for any size standard cabinet. The author's step by step descriptions and procedures can be considered 'idiot-proof' for completing a successful project.
Chapters 19 to 22 on pricing, computers, proposals and reference sources finishes off a manual that can used as an excellent reference for a successful buiness in kitchen cabinetmaking.
The customer of my first kitchen that I mentioned above, is still very pleased with her kitchen and is quick to show it off to anyone that will look and listen, as related to me by her husband. I could have completed the project on my own without the manual but I am convinced that I, and my customer, would have suffered much grief and time delays.
I have also reviewed Danny Proulx's "Build Your Own Kitchen Cabinets". It is very similar to The Kitchen Cabinetmaker's Building and Business Manual but eliminnates the business part. It has more explanation and more diagrams so will be easier to follow.
