Book Description

An illustrated guide to embellishing dolls with beads

Beading, one of the oldest forms of craft, is also a hot new trend and being used in new applications. Beadwork, which has typically been used in fashion, home decoration, and jewelry, is reaching for new horizons and showing up on quilts, journals, knits, crochet, and fiber arts of all kinds. In this book, author Patti Medaris Culea and beading experts Anne Hesse and Laura McCabe illustrate new ways of using various bead techniques to embellish the cloth doll. Sections include the basics of beadwork, beaded flowers for her hair, bead embroidered faces, starbursts (using crystals to enhance the figure), and wings and things (creating wings, crowns, and shoes with beads). Each chapter presents a different type of beading application in detail, with full instructions. Techniques are highlighted with step-by-step photos. A gallery of interpretations of the same pattern by leading artists is included for further inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Review for Creative Cloth Doll Beading.......2007-08-07

I love all of Patti Medaris Culea's books. I find her books to be well written and the illustrations are beautiful and inspiring. A basic knowledge of sewing and jewelry design would be helpful to understand some of the techniques. The dolls in the book have sparked my imagination to design my own unique creations. Great book.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Yet.......2007-08-06

This is Patti's best book yet. It is colorful and thourough. The directions are easy to follow and the sample figures by other artists really help get the creative juices flowing. Art doll artists need this book in their libraries.

4 out of 5 stars Another book from Patti Medaris Cukea.......2007-07-29

Patti M.C. knows everything there is to know about making dolls. This is another book in which she shares her knowledge. Not for beginners. Read her other books first.

I'm not much of a beader, but I love this, yet another fine book by a fine artist, Patti Medaris Culea.

Book Description

The face is the most important feature of a doll -- it is also the most challenging. So it is surprising that there is so little instruction available on creating doll faces. This book fills that void.

Author Patti Medaris Culea began her career in art as a portrait painter and she puts that experience to work when creating her doll faces. In this book, she shows readers a simple technique for easily creating faces using her step-by-step approach. She gives her tips for how to divide the face into quadrants, graft features together, and much more.

Every aspect of doll making is covered -- from the basics to detailed techniques for making the various faces to instructions for putting a pattern together. Readers will learn how to use watercolor pencils, acrylics, and fabric paints to color a face, how to create a face using collage techniques as well as stamping and beading, and tips for working with stretchy fabrics to create indented eyes, separate eyelids, and sculpted lips.

Book Description

This book is the third installment on making creative art doll clothing and accessories from successful doll artist Patti Culea, following Creative Cloth Doll Making and Creative Cloth Doll Faces, both from Rockport Publishers. This book builds on the previous two by delving into how to make exotic and beautiful garments and accessories such as hats, shoes, and purses for art dolls.

This is the only book available on making clothing for art dolls. Moreover, it not only includes a pattern for various wardrobe staples, but the author offers basic garment making techniques, as well as information on decorative fabric treatments and embellishments.

Culea provides tips and techniques for creating everything from a vintage 1940's ensemble to a 1960's type of outfit. There are techniques for dyeing, painting, and stamping to create a beautiful evening gown and how to drape a doll body to create your own pattern. Professional tips, ideas for embellishments, cutting-edge techniques, short cuts, pattern making ideas, and more are also included.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a much have for art doll makers! Full of techniques!.......2007-08-25

Talk about INSPIRATION! This is a wonderful book for all doll makers, beginners and experts alike. There are clear directions for many different techniques, and so much variety in the techniques that you will NEVER come out of your sewing room! This book is a must have for all doll makers and sculptures.

5 out of 5 stars Anatomy of a Doll by Susanna Oroyan.......2007-07-21

I am a cloth doll maker and never fail to find inspiration when I read this book. I look through it frequently for ideas and for technique - and never fail to find something I can use. This is a basic book for any cloth doll maker and I can't recommend it highly enough. I belong to a cloth doll club and everyone owns one of these books and wouldn't be without it.

5 out of 5 stars The best boook on dolll making ever published........2007-04-30

Anyone who cannot understand and follow this book's instructions and illustrations should not attempt to make art dolls. They do not have the necessary creativity and would be better served by a major pattern company. This is the most informative and inspirational books I've read on art dolls. All of Susanna Oroyan's books are informative, inspirational, and food for the soul of the dollmaker.

3 out of 5 stars A Frustrating Experience.......2006-12-16

The book follows no particular sequence and leaves much unanswered in basic steps. For example, page 35 which instructs on making a fully sculptural head is initially clear, basically 3 circles are needed and you'll come out with a fully sculpted head with no nose. But, then there is a drawing of a fully sculptured head with a nose. This head appears to have 4 pieces. The increase caused by splitting the face with the nose in half...but, is this nose appliqued or glued on? Is it then covered with another cloth? This is never answered. And what order is easiest in sewing this face together. If you sew parts 1 and 2, the face, then part 3, the piece which hold in the padding to the face should be smaller (remember, you sewed the face together) and now you need a smaller circumference for part 3, or should it be pleated. According to the author, "learning will be quicker and more enjoyable if you allow yourself to have ideas, to play with them, and to experiment with the techniques." She continues and it becomes condescending. I spent more time than necessary trying to determine exactly what steps to take and when.. she never tells the full story and jumps from one subject to another without warning or explanation. I have plenty of ideas but needed help with the basics in order to apply my ideas. You won't get that here. There are many beautiful figures made by the author and other artists and a brief statement of the technique used. The book is a waste of time and money.. I closed the book and started from "Scratch". I will list the book here on Amazon if any of you want to buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures.......2006-08-02

I thought that the book had spectacular pictures of dolls, but I found the instructions on how to make the same dolls a bit lacking. It's a great idea book and inspiration book, but I would have liked more step by step instructions. There were some patterns and illustrations of how to do faces and the like, but there was a lot more reading to do than I would like in an instructional book.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars "baby" doll book .......2006-09-10

I was not aware (or did not read fully) this is about baby dolls not art dolls which I consider to mostly be adult-ish.

4 out of 5 stars Many Dolls, one look.......2006-07-27

This is a book of patterns and tips. The dolls are all virtually the same, chubby baby-faced toddlers. There is a male and female version. The infant is the same as the toddler but can not stand. The adult (pictured on the cover) is just slightly thiner and longer then the children. If you are looking for variety, these dolls are pretty much the same (they all look related to the one on the cover) and they are all conservatively or classicly styled. I recommend the book for those interested in the learning the basics of makeing a "baby doll". If you want any other style of cloth doll (such as artisan) you will be disappointed in the constraints of the styling and you will be forced to find inspiration for your imagination elsewhere. Probably more like 3 stars.

5 out of 5 stars What a great book!.......2006-05-30

I've been making dolls since I was 11, and this is the book I've been looking for all my life. Worth three times what you pay. The cover does not do it justice. It has soft sculpture faces that are beautiful and natural. Usually soft sculpture dolls look like old people, trolls or are distorted. There is a baby doll that I am going to double size to make it the size of a real baby, so I can have it wear old clothes. The clothes are also beautiful and easy. Make yourself an heirloom.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful dolls.......2006-02-22

I was very much surprised to see dolls that I really liked in this book. The patterns are right in the book and the outfits are also classy! I can not wait to try the patterns!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Creative Cloth Doll Making.......2007-09-29

Wonderful book and the dolls are just beautiful. These dolls are unusual with the latest savvy! Not your usual Raggedy Ann's. Includes dolls made by many cloth dollmakers and their perspective of their design which is wonderful reading. Excellent patterns and ideas! I highly recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the beginner .......2007-09-27

I guess I wasn't paying enough attention, but I thought I was buying a book which would improve my rag doll making. These cloth dolls are NOT rag dolls, they are rather strange and exotic art/craft pieces. Like a previous reviewer, I am completely unable to find the materials used,so can't get to try the patterns to see if they are do-able. (OK, I do live in a very remote place, but so do lots of people who enjoy crafts.)

Having read the instructions closely several times, I find that a lot of techniques are not explained - there is an assumption that you have a sophisticated sewing machine and are familiar with a lot of sewing, dying and printng techniques. Explanations where they are made do not seem to me to be very clear.

I find most of the dolls rather creepy looking, and despite the fact they are made by many different people, they seem to me to be all stamped out of a similar mold. I guess this just wasn't the book I was looking for - but it is none the less beautfiully illustrated and I am sure that I will be able to use some of the ideas - for example, for designing faces - in my more humble rag doll making.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite as impressed as I'd hoped.......2007-08-13

The other reviews for this book were so glowing that I thought this was the end-all-beat-all of doll-making books. It's not that it's bad. The process is just a lot more complex than I hoped it would be. The dolls are beautiful, but I was hoping for more variety. The first doll--the beginner level doll--requires lots of dying of fabrics. Pima cotton--the basic ingredient of almost all the dolls--cannot be bought anywhere (the large fabric store I usually shop at didn't even know what it was) except online or at the referenced locations in the back of the book. I would have appreciated some alternatives. I'm in the process of making the beginner doll, but am making a lot of alternations to simplify the process. Maybe that's not a bad thing, but sometimes it's nice to have directions for a simple first project, with easily purchased materials, so that you can see if you want to continue.

5 out of 5 stars Creative Cloth Doll Making.......2007-05-15

Wait till you see this book! I'm now collecting all kinds of silky threads and materials for my dolls and theres so little you need to make these wonderful dolls from this book. You won"t be able to put it down till the end of the book. Just alittle lace goes a long way. And of course Amazon is the best place to get these books.

5 out of 5 stars Another fine guide for cloth dollmakers by Miriam Gourley!.......2004-12-30

Doll artist and author Miriam Christensen Gourley has written another great book on cloth dollmaking. I loved her first volume, but the dolls and patterns in this one are just as, or maybe even more fun than in the first book!

There is something in "Crafting Cloth Dolls" suitable to all sewing skill levels. Beginners will be pleased with the well-illustrated instruction and more advanced dollmakers are offered more challenging subjects, as well as good clay over cloth instructions.

Gourley has an excellent writing style and offers clear-cut, well-illustrated instructions and helpful tips and techniques, from wigmaking to shoemaking. Everything in this book makes sense!

Highly recommended to dollmakers looking to learn, polish their skills or be inspired by good dollmaking craft.

4 out of 5 stars A great book for more experienced dollmakers.......2002-04-23

I knew I would enjoy this book even before I opened it, as Miriam Gourley's previous book on cloth dollmaking was so good. The earlier book had more basics in it, I feel this book is for more experienced dollmakers who want to be a bit adventurous. Miriam includes some interesting sections on home-made felt and felting, armatures, cloth doll construction and painting effects. For me, the best part was the 10 cloth doll projects at the back of the book, ranging from a simple cloth doll to a policeman to a doll with felted clothing. I loved the charm, diversity and sheer adventurousness of these projects. Definitely worth buying if you have any interest in cloth dolls at all.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2002-02-09

I really like the book "Crafting Cloth Dolls" for several reasons. It is loaded with color photos of dolls ranging from the simple, painted on faced muslin body styles to complicated, wire armature bodied dolls with clay and needle sculpted faces. A basic doll body pattern is included as well for users to create and expound upon.

Doll techniques covered include armature making, dyeing doll hair, wig making, shoe making, fairy wing making, face painting, and drafting doll clothing patterns. A technique for needle sculpted faces and a button joining technique were drawn and explained.

Patterns with body and clothing templates, supply lists, and clearly written instructions are included with the book to make 10 different styles of dolls. The dolls include Tulip (the doll on the cover), a tomato man, a constable, medieval knight, Japanese woman (from Japanese "Little Peach" fairy tale), simple rag doll, felted doll, felt body doll with paper clay mask, whimsical doll made of wire clothed with embillishments, and a very elegant maid doll.

The final pages of the book include a source sheet to locate the various doll artists that contributed to the book and order their respective patterns.

With so many doll making techniques abounding, this book cannot possibly cover them all; however, the patterns and easy to follow instruction with this book make it an excellent addition to the beginning doll makers library and an excellent source of inspiration for the more advanced doll maker.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for art dolls in fabric.......2004-06-01

I made the mistake of buying an art doll magazine while out on an "artist date" not too long ago. As if I didn't already have enough projects going in many different directions, that got me hooked into the fascinating world of art dolls. These are not your standard Raggedy Anne dolls!

Ms. LeVan has provided a great resource to start dabbling in the world of art dolls if your medium of choice is fabric, as mine is. She provides three basic designs, each quite different. A pattern that will need to be enlarged is provided within the pages, and directions for the construction of the basic design are included. The directions are quite thorough, but do require some basic sewing knowledge, although this only needs to be "basic."

The fun is seeing the variations of each design done by several well known doll artists. They really show that though each design is very simple, with imagination, the artist can enjoy making each doll unique. There is also a gallery of special project dolls using a variety of techniques, with instructions for these as well. If that isn't enough to inspire, a photo gallery is included to provide more inspiration.

I have already made one of the basic dolls, "Energy," adding my own touches to the design. I found the instructions to be very easy to follow and enjoyed working with the design. The size is just right for anyone who is participating in a round robin doll project, keeping postage costs down.

If you have been intrigued, as I was, by the art doll movement, this book is a great starting point from which to join the movement.
