5 out of 5 stars Crochet for Left handers.......2007-06-08

This was the first book I have found in all my searches that I was actually able to learn to crochet. I am very lefthanded and the large amount of pictures in this book really made the difference. For the first time in my life I can actually crochet.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice book.......2007-01-10

While teaching an 8 year old girl to crochet, I found she was left-handed and that I would need a special book for her. I found the book "Learn To Crochet In Just One Day/Left Hand" by Jean Leinhauser at Amazon.com. This is the perfect book for a left handed child to learn crochet and she is very pleased with it. Thank You.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent instructions for beginner!.......2006-01-19

I was attempting to learn crochet from a neighbor who learned it from her grandmother without the benefit of knowing all the terms or even all the various stitches. Feeling confused, I did some research and found this booklet.

Wow, what an amazing booklet! It was like a light bulb going off, finally understanding the basic stitches, how to count properly, where EXACTLY the hook should go through, and WHY the stitches require an extra chain (or 2 or 3) at the end of a row. It suddenly all made sense! I passed it on to a friend, and she had the same reaction. Now we can actually crochet something, instead of just focusing on trying to learn a few stitches.

I highly recommend this booklet to those who have never done crochet work or those who are beginning and need some clear, precise instructions.

4 out of 5 stars great for beginners.......2005-11-28

I purchased a couple of other learn to crochet books and they don't compare to this one. The pictures are very easy to follow. The only downside to this book is the patterns they include are pretty outdated.

2 out of 5 stars Love it but one pattern is giving me trouble!.......2007-02-07

I was attracted to this book mainly for the Cozy Kerchief pattern-and I can't create it!! Sorry to say but so far I'm left to assume that the pattern is not only flawed but incomplete. I feel positive about the other patterns.

    5 out of 5 stars A Beginner Book.......2007-01-07

I got this book for my little sister, who is learning how to crochet. The projects were a little too simple for me (I've been crocheting for 18 years), but I really liked it and wanted to give it to someone who could learn crochet from it (I would like to have had a book like that when I was learning). A lot of the projects are things I would like to make or have someone make for me.

4 out of 5 stars oh so cozy...........2007-01-06

If you want to know your basic crochet try this book. The projects are sweet. Just making the simple round coaster looks pleasantly swell. I rather enjoyed the pattern for the "flower" accessory that can make any plain jacket adorable. Then there is the "cozy"kerchief that you chain and double crochet that will please not just the little girl in the house, but perhaps your best friend, too.

But this book is full of challenges too, with halter tops and granny square clutches. Easy to follow instructions that can make the most extra-ordinary gifts.

If you want to learn basic crochet or need a pattern to make someone the perfect gift...this is the book you'll want.

    2 out of 5 stars too simple.......2005-03-01

I would consider myself a beginner to intermediate crocheter so I took the advise of someone to get this book. I was disappointed to see how simplistic this book is. It is a pretty book on the outside, but it really should be labeled in some way that it is for the very beginning beginners.

3 out of 5 stars Many household items............2005-01-30

I've made scarves, afghans, table mats, lace and doilies, as well as many other small crocheted items. I like COZY CROCHET because it includes some smaller items one can use as gifts, such as lace edging for pants and flowers for applique as well as the so-called `hippie' belt. I made the latter for my 16-year old granddaughter and she thought it was "cool". The flowers can be sewn on denim jackets and hats or the seat of your jeans. CC also includes lacy shawls and stoles, pillow covers, and a crochted skirt. I am not too fond of crocheted items that hang-like skirts and purses-as they tend to grow longer and longer over time (stretch and sag), so I would advise not making them.

The book also includes household items such as a fruit bowl made from fabric strips, a crocheted rug and dish rags. In every case one must ask, when this item becomes dirty, how will I get it clean--but the authors don't provide any info on that aspect. I think all these things could be thrown in the washer, though it would depend on what you use as your basic fiber. Also, a good wash might make it unravel. Too often these books tell you how to make something but don't tell you how to care for it after you make it-this book does not explain how you would keep a item from stretching or unraveling in the washer--a painful experience after you spent hours making it.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-08-06

I usually get the books from the library and have a look at them before I decide if they are any good. I got this one from the library and decided I had to have this book. It is great for new crocheters and experienced ones also.
I am an experienced crocheter and I really loved this book so much so I have brought it off amazon. I am interested in crocheting cables and I havent been able to find a book with plain and understandable instructions on how to do this. This one has all this, great pictures and interesting techniques as well.
I think I may be able to make that cable jumper now with crochet instead of knitting it like I usually would.
    Great book highly recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!.......2007-03-04

This is an excellent learning tool for those who want to
learn crochet. I'm an avid knitter but want to learn
crochet especially in-the-round as I want to make my own
hats and caps, but I just couldn't find a book to get me
    started.

This book has wonderful photos and close-ups of every technique.
The projects are slanted towards younger adults but can be
adapted for any age. A very well-thought-out book and easily
portable as it closes with its own velcro clasp. I highly recommend.

    4 out of 5 stars Worth it!!.......2006-09-23

This book is excellent. I am a relatively new crocheter and I have been looking for resources to help me expand my abilities. This book has excellent photos of a variety of different stitches. Their explanations are easy to understand and the projects are modern and cool. Great!

this is an awsome book my mom had to
help me with a few basics but it realy
deserves 5 stars!!! if i can do it

    awsome book.

5 out of 5 stars Ready, Set, Crochet is a great reference book.......2005-11-05

I found this book to be a great reference not only for the basic crochet stitches, but also for some more interesting and advanced stitches. It even has a little library of stitches with instructions and photos. Additionally, each section "lesson" has a project that uses that stitch or skill, for example a hat to learn both crocheting in rounds and the bobble stitch. The spiral wire binding and fold-up stand are also neat features. The photos are very good and help understanding the instruction. I highly recommend this book for both beginners and more advanced crocheters.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice for Beginners with Experience.......2007-02-21

This is my favorite doily book! The instructions are flawless and the layout is wonderful. I've made a handful of doilies before, so I wanted something easy, but not too easy. The patterns in this book are interesting enough to be fun and lovely; but not so hard that you can't watch TV at the same time! I've made all three on the cover and I can't wait to make the other 3 in the book. Highly recommended for beginners and beginners with a little bit of experience, too.

5 out of 5 stars First One For Me.......2004-11-01

This was the first book I bought when learning to crochet with thread. The designs are really easy to follow and have the beginner to advanced route. A really nice instruction book.

4 out of 5 stars Great beginner patterns!.......2007-04-02

I am a beginner crocheter, and bought this book because I wanted some very easy crochet patterns. I was very pleased with the selection of patterns! The patterns are all beginner-to-easy and progress from projects made with simple rectangles to ones requiring some shaping/trims. I really liked that nearly all of the patterns use relatively inexpensive, easy to find yarns that can be purchased at any craft store, unlike some crochet books that call for expensive, hard to find designer yarns. I did give the book a "4" overall instead of a "5" however, because I think the learn to crochet instructions at the beginning of the book would be a bit difficult for a person who has never crocheted at all to follow - they are all black & white drawings. Color photos would be more helpful. Overall though, a great book!

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Looks are Deceiving.......2006-12-31

I purchased this book as a brand new knitter looking to learn from a book. I was attracted to it because of the cover art, the fact that the book can be freestanding, and the beautiful photographs of the stitches inside. I also liked the look of the designs of the patterns. I won't say this is a horrible book, because it does have some good qualities, but it is not for beginners, as it does not provide detailed explanation in most of the patterns. I also found some errors in some of the patterns, which I thought were on my part, but I went to a knitting store and asked the owner and she said it was not my error, but the book's. The sock pattern, in particular, will make a sock, but with a very awkward feel and fit. I think these patterns are much more suited to the intermediate knitter who can catch an error before it is too late. That being said, I do wish more pattern books were free standing like this one--it made life easier.

2 out of 5 stars C- effort, lots of issues learning with this book.......2006-10-10

As a new knitter attempting to teach myself, I thought this book would help me become proficient in no time. Boy, was I wrong! Granted, I'm only on the first project, but I feel I'm lucky to be squeeking even the essentials out of this poorly-written book. Some of the instructions (even illustrated) are unclear and confusing, and I was completely lost on the selvage information, which was not illustrated; they actually used a selvage skill in the first project! I gave up that part of the instructions after about 10 rows - it was impossible to see what I was doing and it made absolutely no sense.

The first project was a scarf - ideal for new knitters, but she has you using "chunky" yarn and no. 17 (HUGE, FAT) needles, which were awkward to use at first and the chunky yarn made it difficult for me to really see what I was doing. Some of the other projects are just plain DORKY - no one I know would be caught dead wearing that fringed top!

The "stand-up" feature is impractical; the pages aren't even properly set up in the instruction part of the book to allow one to stand the book up and merely turn it around - half the pages are upside-down! I would rather have had a regularly bound and set up book than this halfway effort.

While I will keep this book and likely refer to it occasionally, I would not recommend it to anyone. I've ordered "Instant Expert: Knitting," which a friend recommended, so I hope that will be better. As for this book, I'd skip it. Not worth the cover price; maybe worth buying at a really cheap used book store, but that's about it.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for beginner or even moderate knitter.......2006-09-29

I would probably give 4.5 stars if possible...I really like this book overall. I agree that it's not likely that anyone would like all of the patterns in here (especially the fringe top!), but I think there is something for everyone. I have made the "flaps or no flaps" hat (no flaps for me), the tote bag, and the slouch socks. There are several other patterns I plan to try eventually.

But what I really love are the instructional parts of the book. If you're a total beginnger, it's a great thing to work your way through the techniques from beginning to end. If you're a little more advanced, it's a handy reference. I have pulled it off the shelf several times to look up a pattern abbreviation, check a diagram of a technique, etc. The large numbers of sample stitches (different open work patterns, cable patterns, textured patterns, etc.) are also a great reference if you're interested in designing your own pattern. It has made me braver as a moderate knitter--I never would have guessed I would try making my own patterns before I bought this book!

4 out of 5 stars Good beginning knitting course.......2005-04-06

This book looked ideal for my needs (rank beginner) when browsing in our local knitting store, so I bought it. It's turned out to be a mixed bag, but I'm still glad I bought it and I'm still using it as my primary knitting course to teach myself to knit.

The target audience is rank beginners, as you would guess from the title. It is not intended as a reference book for more advanced knitters.

Where this book excels is its selection of topics and the order of the topics. Other knitting books will bog you down with umpteen variations on a subject when you'd be better advised to move on to the next basic topic. Ms. Kagan picks the appropriate topics to concentrate on and presents them in an appropriate order for learning them. The basic topics include casting on (first row), knitting, purling, binding off (last row), gauge (picking the appropriate size needles), correcting mistakes, increasing and decreasing the size of rows so you're not limited to knitting rectangles, and reading typical project instructions. From there, she moves on to assembling the finished item (blocking, pressing, seams); textured, raised, and cable patterns; yarn embroidery - a simple way to add color before you're ready to tackle knitting multi-colored patterns; stripes; multi-colored patterns; using circular and double-pointed needles; and decorative openwork (various lace shawl patterns).

The book is attractively laid out and copiously illustrated, inviting you to dive in and explore. That's unless you're a man or boy curious about knitting, in which case you'll have a hard time getting past the pink cover and feminine look of the book.

The down side is that the instructions could be clearer. On getting it home and actually sitting down to read it, I couldn't at first understand what she was saying. However, with knitting needles in hand, concentrating on learning just one technique at a time, and picking a technique I'm reasonably ready to learn, I can usually figure it out. If you're left-handed (I'm not), good luck - it has one paragraph for you. The instructions are clearer in the "I Taught Myself Knitting" booklet co-produced by Lion Brand yarn and Boye (equipment manufacturer), a surprisingly good booklet that comes in kits with various starter assortments of equipment.

Another strength of this book is that it intersperses projects between lessons. The projects don't happen to be my style or anything I happen to have any use for, for the most part, or maybe that's just due to first impressions and color choices, but they're good both for practicing and for better understanding the techniques just learned. The more sensible projects include scarves, hats, sweaters, an embroidered pillow, throw (red hearts?? maybe I'll try it with green shamrocks instead), leg warmers, slouch socks, fingerless gloves, poncho, and a nice lace shawl.

In summary, if you're a rank beginner, this book can give you the knowledge and confidence to tackle any reasonably normal knitting project, however you may need to supplement it with another book or ask for help from someone who knows how to knit.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of techniques, projects not the best.......2004-12-29

When I first looked at this book, I was struck by the good instructions that the author gives on various types of cables and other pattern stitches. I think that this book is a good book to own if you want to learn a lot of pattern stitches, but the patterns themselves do not really appeal to me. The candy stripe leg warmers and the cable hats are cute, but those are about the only ones I feel particularly attracted to. The fringe top is really ugly, too--just thought you might want a warning...
Bottom line: It's not worth the list price, but if you can find a good deal, then it's a nice book to have in your knitting library.
