Don't waste your time or money.........2007-10-09
I had high expectations for this book. Crochet is my first love, in yarn crafts and this sounded like such a cool concept; a book featuring various projects all stemming from a basic square crochet design.
Wow, what a disappointment. The patterns for the most part, in my opinion are just plain ugly and certainly not worth spending time and money on making.
The author seems to be on a yarn fun fur/fuzzy kick....which ok, to a point (in trim etc) can be effective, but come on....every project seems to be a mass of tangles and fuzz...just plain goofey and gross. Most of the patterns are also rather `old ladyish' for lack of better term, not the trendy, ultra-cool designs I had expected, given the description of the book, online.
The instructions, gauges and yarn suggestions are sketchy at best. Definitely not a book I would recommend and certainly not one I plan to use. This one is unfortunately headed for the recycle bin, not my personal craft book collection. Maybe someone out there (public library?) will revel in all these fuzzy wonders....It ain't gonna be me!!!
Not what I expected.......2007-09-20
Well, I found this book rather disappointing. Not much in the way of anything new - over-sized shawls, ponchos, etc., but nothing unique. Not much in this book that I would crochet.
Not quite enough........2007-09-19
Just received this book and started a shrawl. I am an avid crocheter and knitter and so found the illustrations and yarn combo lovely. However I am somewhat disappointed by the some of the pattern instructions have not been proofed and some are vague. So disappointing. Also have not found a website where corrections or info for her patterns.
easy to read and follow project.......2007-08-16
this is a great instructional book for beginners, intermediate or advanced crocheters !! i just love the illustrations and step-by-step guides. i created quite a few of the works in this book and received wonderful feedback not to mention all the fun i had creating !
these fast and easy patterns turn out beautiful works. a "must have" for any crocheter !
Crochet Squared.......2007-06-17
I thoroughly enjoyed perusing this publication. As a person with renewed interest in fiber arts (crocheting as well as knitting) this book offers eye candy in the form of projects created with novelty yarns as well as opened my mind up to possibilities. As a financially challenged graduate student I especially appreciated the section on yarn substitution (kudos for you Ms. Polk). And the fact that she is a "sistah" as they say . . . well, yaahoooo! You get a "go girl; atta girl". I'm proud. :)
I would recommend this book and thought it cool how I had purchased it last week and just yesterday one of my spiritual sisters recommended it to me also. When I arrived home, Voila! The publication had arrived. I'm quite satisfied to add this to my growing library of fiber art publications.

Great photos, projects so-so, instructions lacking.......2006-10-12
It's nice to see creative photography applied to crochet. The swatches in the introductory section are presented in gorgeous artistry. However, the black-and-white, somewhat washed-out photos in the instructional section are not as helpful as they should be, and sometimes you can't tell which stitch the pictures go with. And what does she mean with the arrows on step two for double (or maybe half-double) crochet? There is no indication about wrapping the yarn before the final pull-through. For clear, helpful instructions, try Sharon Silverman's book Basic Crocheting instead.
The pillows and containers are interesting. I tried to find leather for a pillow and couldn't even get reasonably priced supplies from my shoemaker. And I don't know many people who are interested in making bottle covers, tea cozies, or towel edging.
Great tips and pics.......2005-08-05
This book has been wonderful for me. I had no experience with crocheting but was very interested in learning how to make things like my grandmother had. The learning section at the beginning is full of full color pictures and wonderful explanations. It is very well rounded and I am sure I will complete at least one each of many of the projects within the book.
Not for a "Newbie"..........2005-03-31
Although I love the projects in this book, and the photography is fantastic, the title and description would lead one to believe that this is a good book from which to learn crochet. I believe this was the intent of the author, but it falls short in a few areas. First, the beginning steps are explained too briefly, and leave a lot of things out. Secondly, the descriptions of the stitches are written assuming that the reader already has a basic knowledge of crochet, using terms that do not make much sense to a first time crocheter, (and with tons of typos!) ei. "Inserting you hook into the ring, work as many stitches into the ring as your instructions tell you." Fine for a seasoned crocheter, but a bit confusing when working stitches into a ring has never been explained!
I would give this book a 4 or 5-star rating for someone who has at least basic knowledge of crochet, but for the newbie, I'd give it a 2.
A homewares investment.......2005-03-26
This book checks all the boxes when it comes to doing something different in crocheting. I'm not a fan of dust-catchers, or anything twee. And I'm shipping to Australia so its got to be worth it.
You can get squares a dime-a-dozen, but interesting, tasteful and useful items for age-old activities can be hard to come by. This book's range of projects would fit into most shabby-chic, country or Ikea decorated homes and are fairly straightforward to undertake.
The only annoyance I have with the book, which is shared with many other publications, is that the images of the finished products are often photographed 'artistically' at the expense of giving a clear idea of what you're supposed to end up with. :|
Otherwise, I'm going to be using this as my source book for a few more projects yet - if I could afford all the materials, and had the time, I'd be making at least 11 of the 20 projects (and have made the slippers, yum), which is a good ratio for the cost.
Beatiful designs, with a few functional issues........2005-02-07
As an art director, I appreciate (and was drawn to) the cover, which accurately represents an entire book of beautiful, simple projects. The author obviously has an eye for color and cleverly showcases her finished pieces using an appealing palette of neutrals, offset by brighter pinks, oranges and greens. It's lovely eye candy and an inspiration for those seeking help breaking out of the 1970s color box.
There are also many patterns that use not just yarn, but raffia, material, leather, etc., something I hadn't considered before and have used as inspiration.
I was a little disappointed, though, that the aesthetic photos of finished projects aren't supplemented with a more functional picture that shows the piece in its entirety, especially the four throws.
There are 10 pages devoted to learning all the stitches used in the book. While the accompanying photos are helpful and clear, I don't think it's comprehensive enough for the complete beginner, especially the instructions for crocheting in rounds. I've found much better instruction in Leisure Arts' 10-20-30 Minutes To Learn To Crochet ($8.95).
One reviewer had mentioned she was looking for more beautiful projects like the ones featured in Simple Crochet. Candi Jensen has a few books that also help to bring crochet into the 21st century...check out Candy Blankies and Hip to Crochet.

Customer Reviews:
Too many typos. .......2007-08-09
I purchased this deck because i was drawn to the concept of having my patterns in card form, so that they would take up less space while traveling. The patterns seemed interesting at first, but when i finally chose one to start, i found numerous typos that made the projects difficult to complete. Not all of the projects had mistakes, but needless to say the ones that did have mistakes left me very frustrated.
simple projects.......2007-07-03
although the projects are fairly simple the best project is the one on the cover. There are only two items of clothing for women (not in cluding hats etc), the one on the front cover and a jacket. Both of these items only go up to a finished bust size of 40 inches. The rest of the projects were fairly uninspiring.
I'm "hooked"! .......2007-03-19
Before I picked up this deck, I was never that into crochet. I knew the basics, but I hadn't found projects that were inspiring or easy to follow. This deck combines both creative, clever, and beautiful projects with straightforward patterns that even I could follow. I have to say that I have become a bit obsessed, working my way through the 25 projects at a swift pace. I highly recommend this deck to anyone interested in crochet (and especially those of you looking to cross over from knitting).

i can finally crochet!!.......2007-05-18
i picked up this book after looking through at least 4 or 5 other ones. most of the projects in other books were either too intimidating or too confusing. i couldn't even figure out how to make any other stitch but the chain and slip stitch. but this book has clear, colorful pictures with easy to understand instructions and really cute projects. a couple of them could be finished in a day, if you're as obsessive as i am. :) i highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how to crochet. it's a great beginners book. can't wait for the next one "get hooked again!" i don't know if i can wait until october! :)
Hip Patterns and Great Instructions.......2006-09-01
Kim's book is geared towards teens and tweens, but everytime I show it to grown ups there are choruses of "I'd make that!" or "I want one of those!" I teach a lot of kids and teen crochet classes, and this is always a popular book in the classroom. There are clear, easy to follow instructions, great patterns and a fun playful style. And it's affordable for kids and grownups too!
I'm hooked now!.......2006-07-30
Kim was the first person to teach me how to crochet correctly (you don't even want to know what I was doing before)! This book is the next best thing to having her with you in person. The photos are clear, the projects are fun and if you need a refresher course, you'll find everything you need to know. Love it!

Not so simple.......2007-09-06
I took this book out from the library. I'm glad, because I won't buy it. On the plus side, the pictures are nice and some of the projects are really beautiful. But it's called "Simple Crochet" and EVERY pattern but ONE is labelled "intermediate." The one "beginner" pattern is for a crocheted ball, not a garment. I was hoping for some "simple" garments, but I see none. And I'm afraid to try the intermediate patterns because I really am a beginner. Maybe the title is inappropriate.
Who thought these directions were a good idea?.......2007-08-04
Before buying this book you should check it out at the library to make sure you can disipher the horribly written directions. It really is a shame because the designs are GORGEOUS, but the patterns are practically useless. I'm still trying to figure out how the author turns at the end of a foundation chain.
I agree the patterns could not have been tested and the editor really dropped the ball. There is an entire section of direction left out in the beginning where the basic crochet instructions are.
Very disapointing.
Mistakes in the Patterns.......2007-06-24
I was really excited when I got this book because many baby patterns in other books are pretty ugly and shapeless. This one has *adorable* pictures and very, very cute designs. There are mistakes in the patterns, however. I often found myself having to scrap the written pattern, look at the pictures, and make things up as I went along to try and approximate. This is not why I bought a pattern book! If I had wanted to make up my own patterns, I'd do so. When I buy a book, I expect to be able to follow it. I also expect the author and publisher to have tested the patterns for errors or confusing parts. I don't believe that was done here, which is pretty disappointing.
Simple Crochet.......2007-03-28
This book is wonderful. There is a wide variety of projects. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and the pictures of the finished projects are absolutely delightful. One word of caution, although it is titled "Simple Crochet..." almost all the projects in this book are classed as intermediate and require a certain degree of shaping and finishing.
Very pretty, simple patterns.......2006-11-14
Before purchasing this book I had only crocheted blankets, scarves and hats. This was my first try at anything more. I love it! I made the kimono jumper, the booties, the bibs and the heirloom blanket and every single item turned out just like the pics. I simply followed each direction step by step. I'm excited to try the dress next.

Customer Reviews:
interesting designs.......2006-11-30
I like the designs in this book. Unfortunately, only experienced crocheters should buy the book. I made the lacy sweater cardigan. It was going really well until one line of directions made no sense at all. Luckily I was able to create directions for that line and go forward. The cardigan turned out fine. This book would also be OK if you had support from a yarn store to help rewrite a few lines of directions. I would buy this book again.
Scary designs.......2006-08-20
I'm not sure why all the other reviews seem to be so positive of the designs when my opinion is the complete opposite. I felt it important that I include my viewpoint. I requested this book from the library just so I could look it over first. The front cover looked cute, but it turns out I should have returned it immediately. Most of the designs (all clothing items) look to me like they should be draped over a table or be a lampshade. Other items would be fine if they were scaled down to about 1/4th the size they are presented in. The models look like they've shrunk under the enormous designs. One outfit looks like a giant doily took over the model's entire back. Basically what I'm saying is, I would never wear the items in this book. They look fun to crochet, but they're just not practical.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not normally one to give a negative review, so I feel kind of bad about this. I can see the positive in most things, but in this case I felt even the slightly so-so designs were tainted by being around the others.
Worth your money!.......2006-06-18
Several unique and trendy patterns. I've already made several items from this book. This one is worth the money you spend for it!!!!
Some Nice Patterns, but..........2006-06-06
First and foremost, the majority of the patterns in this book are really beautiful. But, as always, there are a few items that serve as "filler" (nothing new or extraordinary). Overall, I would have given this book a 4-star review based on patterns alone. However, there are a few problems.
I would recommend this book to more experienced crocheters simply because (as other reviews have already expressed) the patterns can be really tricky.
Two thoughts for anyone who is interested in purchasing this book. Firstly, be aware that the patterns must be converted. Yes, this is a pain, but if you have the time and ambition, the end result will be worth the effort. Secondly, as others have stated, the yarn prices are HIGH. So, it may be worthwhile (and more economical) to substitue for some more reasonably priced yarns. These two factors are why I gave this book only 3-stars.
So, all in all, this book is best for those with more experience who feel comforable converting patterns to American crochet. While the patterns themselves ARE quite simple, the task of doing all the converting could drive even the most experienced a little nutty.
Best of luck!
Beware!!!!.......2006-02-16
The patterns in this book look absolutely beautiful on the pages but the book was not originally published in the US. There are instructions for converting British Crochet to US Crochet online, but now that I have found this out I have given up on this book. Also the yarn that is used can only be found online for extremely high prices. If you don't want to do that you have to convert the yarn into what is available in the US. Just a note...the white cardigan that held my fancy when purchasing this book would cost over 100 dollars to make if you bought the comparable yarn in the US. I would stay away! (but the patterns look so pretty) Pretty..Yes...but are they worth the effort and money?

a little misleading.......2007-03-08
The yarn they provide isn't enough to make a bookmark - a little disappointed with that.
The perfect gift for a beginner.......2005-11-06
Want an inviting crochet kit which goes beyond the usual spiral-bound book format? Based on the book Cozy Crochet, here's a wonderful gift book pairing a book with basic crochet techniques with five different-sized crochet hooks, yarn for several projects, and over twenty patterns printed on lightweight cards for easy viewing. Cozy Crochet Kit is the perfect gift for a beginner.
Nice project but the tools loosy.......2005-09-18
I like the projects that are in this kit, but the crochets that the author provides are useless. Within an hour of strating one of the projects the crochet G, that I was using, broke in 3 pieces. My advice to you: buy your tools somewhere else before you attempt to do the projects.
By the way, the projects are not for novice
Excellent and fun resource for a crocheters bag...........2005-09-03
Although not for the advanced crocheter, this kit includes all the basics for someone to get started and to try some new projects. I have been crocheting for years, my grandmother taught me and I liked the ease of the cards and some cute new projects to just whip up for gifts or fun. I also bought a few of these for some friends I am teaching to crochet. This with the encyclopedia of crochet will get anyone started, even those that don't have help. I think for someone young, or even in their 20's or 30's they would enjoy making most of these projects for sure.... other ages would depend on a persons style or ability to modifiy patterns to their own tastes.
Overall a great little kit that comes with everything you need to teach a friend to crochet and to have for traveling.
excellent gift for someone who loves to crochet.......2005-08-24
We got this as a "welcome home from camp" gift for my daughter. She LOVES it! She's only been crocheting for about a year, if that tells you the level of the book. It's not for someone who has only learned 2 stiches, but for someone who is ready to do a little more. It has EXCELLENT pictures and ideas. The plus is that it is very nicely packaged, which is why it is perfect for a gift.

Very good resource for filet.......2007-06-05
this book includes very good basic instructions, including how to increase. There are lots of beautiful patterns ranging from florals, scenics, geometrics and some for children. Included are curtains, table covers, edgings, and many others. One can easily adapt the filet charts to uses other than those shown. Photos and charts are very clear.
Great for beginners.......2002-02-14
I have crocheted before but everytime I tried to follow instructions on how to filet, I couldn't understand them. This explained it very well and I was quickly making very nice projects. Filet works rapidly and you can really make things quickly.
Inspiring.......2001-12-28
The projects in this book are what I would call 'sophisticated country' in style. I have found the directions to be excellent. I made a doily from this book as my very first project having just learned to crochet. I have made an edging from the book to adorn a linen baptismal gown. I know I will choose projects from this book for many years to come, and have spent many hours just enjoying the pictures.
One of the best filet books on the market.......2001-06-06
This is the one of the most detailed books on filet crochet that I have ever read. It has background, history, comparisons, patterns. The pattern section has a good variety to choose from and are not just doilies. The instructions are excellent and the patterns are just beautiful. The introduction and general "how to" instructions are detailed and have large illustrations. There is a conversion chart of hook sizes, as well as US and British terms for chart symbols and abbreviations. There are complete instructions on how to read charts, do increasing and decreasing, make turns and calculate patterns. It has a great "first project" with one the best illustrated directions I've seen for how to work the stitches and where to actually place your hook for stitches and turns. I would recommend this book regardless of whether you are already into filet crochet or want to learn how to do filet crochet. Chris did an excellent job.
Book doesn't give thread recommendations and yardage.......2001-01-03
This is a wonderful book, but a new edition could be more useful if it listed the thread size and amounts in yards used for the projects as illustrated. While the book lists thread weights in grams, the weight can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Before you do a project, make sure to crochet a gage swatch and make estimates based on the swatch.
Book Description
“Like other titles in this series, Davis’s work concentrates on enjoyable projects that can be completed successfully in a short period of time. Socks, hats, mittens, and vests —all are represented here by patterns that feature good-quality yarns in natural fibers and do not sacrifice quality for quickness. Highly recommended.”—Library Journal.

Nice Designs, Inadequate Instructions.......2007-05-26
I'm in the middle of crocheting the Classic Vest, p. 49. Like another reviewer, at first I couldn't even get started. I have had help from an instructor at my local craft store (she took the pattern home and finally figured out how to start). There is nothing to let me know if I'm working correctly - the number of stitches at the end of the rows would be helpful. I don't think the designs are dowdy - I was looking for designs that were tailored and not "cute." There are several other projects in the book that I want to try if I finally make it through this one.
Not dowdy to me BUT .............2005-07-16
I am currently trying to make the vest with the mandarin collar. I have 30+ years of crocheting experience and am 42. I personally think the instructions to the vest are lacking. Most instructions tell you what you are to do then give a bit of a recap of the count at the end. (ie. Sc in each chain one space then say 50 sc total) If you accidentally skip a stitch or misunderstood the directions with most directions you can count or figure it out by something else mentioned. With this pattern, if you make a mistake or misunderstand, you won't know. I figure I must have made a mistake somewhere but can't find out where.
inspirational.......2005-05-23
This book is probably better suited for more experienced crocheters as there are some stitches mentioned that son't seem to appear anyplace else. I do like this book to use as a starting point to go somewhere else with it. I ended up making my first "Mile A Minute" afghan based on a pattern that's in the book. No, the pattern wasn't for an afghan, but was easily adapted for it.
I recommend this book for more experienced crocheters.
difficult to follow.......2005-03-10
I tried to follow directions for the vest on page 49 from this book and could not get past row 2. The directions were very unclear. I asked my mother to try it, and she had the same problem. Between us, we have 45 years of crochet experience, so either this book was not edited for accuracy or the writer cannot write concise directions.
As for an earlier reviewer's comment that some items were "dowdy", I would recommend looking past the author's choice of yarn (lots of earth tones) to the bones and design of the garment. With different yarn (and clearer directions!) they might make attractive garments.
It's dull.......2003-12-27
It's an okay book, but the designs are really dull and old-fashioned. I was always more of a knitter and found this book to discourage me from branching out to crocheting.
