It's the newest thing in crafting, a hot mix of crochet and beadwork. These more than 50 projects for necklaces, earrings, and bracelets are all marvelously easy to make, using only the most basic stitches. Surround cabochons with a netting of beaded crochet to form the Opal or Stone Pendant Necklaces. The Pearl Frenzy necklace features freshwater pearls threaded into a chain-stitched design. For a matching set of jewels, try the Pretty in Pink or Snake ensembles. Each project includes color graphs and diagrams, and there's plenty of information on stringing techniques, selecting the best fibers, combining different sizes and types of beads, and troubleshooting. A Selection of the Crafters Choice Book Club.

3 out of 5 stars Kinda Creepy.......2007-07-21

This book has an adequate technical description of the techniques and is helped if you also get the DVD book(?), Create with the Designers Beaded Crochet, of hers that contains some of the projects from this book where Ann Benson gives a good demo of the basics.
I guess some consider the projects tasteful but I think the majority of them are very old fashioned and I am a 66 year old grandmother! My main objection to this book are the photos of young girls dressed up with lots of makeup wearing these 'jewels'. This is where my review title comes in. These pictures are far too reminiscent of that poor child, JonBinet Ramsey, and therefore Kinda Creepy!

3 out of 5 stars pretty pictures but not alot of "guts"........2007-04-10

This book had lovely pictures of young girls wearing jewels but in my mind lacked the instruction/s I was looking for. When ordering a book to increase my bead crochet abilities that is exactly what I want - a how to book. This book did not fill that desire. This is not a book that I would necessarily keep in my library.

4 out of 5 stars a different perspective.......2007-03-04

When I bought this book I thought I would be able to learn bead crochet from it without much difficulty. HA! The author uses bead slip-stitch and even though I had many years of crocheting experience........I just couldn't 'get-it'. Bead single crochet beginning with larger beads and thicker thread was a better technique for learning (for me anyway). Now that I learned (from another source)......I love this book and have used for several projects. It is a beautiful book, full of inspiration and I find it quite contemporary compared to vintage beaded ropes.

5 out of 5 stars Bead Crochet Jewelry: Tools, Tips, and 15 Beautiful Projects.......2007-02-14

I love this book.
I've been teaching bead rope crochet for 3 years. This the best resource book I've seen. It has both simple and complex ideas but also some very advanced techniques that I've not seen elsewhere and believe me I have just about everything.

3 out of 5 stars old fashioned.......2006-07-09

This is so old fashioned! it looks like the jewles of a grandma, that the grandaughter will love to play with, but, well, nothing I really want to make.
maybe the instructions are good, that is why i am giving it 3 stars and not one. but the thing on the cover - this is what inside. do not expect anything modern. this is only my opinion.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Patterns.......2007-08-07

This book is geared towards intermediate or advanced knitters who want to take their projects to a whole new level. Beads add an entirely new dimension to your knitted pieces. I am a jewelry designer who enjoys knitting and this book brings together two of my passions. The instructions and drawings are very clear. My favorite patterns are the Ethereal Lace Tunic and the Grace Kelly Collar. Both are simply gorgeous! If you love beads and knitting or crocheting, you will enjoy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Knit and Crochet with Beads.......2006-07-06

Very informative book. Gave some great ideas on how to add beads to some of my projects.

5 out of 5 stars Lily Takes the Mystery Out of Bead Knitting.......2006-03-08

Who else but Lily could do it? I have knitted beaded purses on 0000 needles, but never considered knitting a beaded garment until reading this book. Lily explaind every way that it can be done in clear and precise language, with excellent pictures and charts. The patterns are glorious! Patterns for sweaters and shawls and really beautiful items that are truly one of a kind. And not knit on itty bitty needles either. You don't don't need a magnifying glass to knit these beauties! I am working on the Vargas Girl Sweater in pale blue Rowan cashmere with gold and copper beads, a large investment, but the results are gorgeous!! This book is a must have for the truly glamorous knitter!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Designs and Outstanding Instructions.......2005-09-29

Inspiring and instructive. As always, Lily's instructions are clear and easy to follow, even for techniques that are new and a little different. The projects are stunning and quite "finish-able." And Lily's "signature" sense of humor keeps you company while you create and learn. A winner.

3 out of 5 stars More knit than crochet.......2005-08-10

I had great hopes that crochet would have equal parts of knit and crochet and boy was I wrong. For you knitters, it is about 75% knit and 25% crochet. I just expected more balance and didn't get it.

I was a little disappointed with this book. Maybe I was expecting too much. For the price I was expecting much more of a gallery and much more bead crochet information.

5 out of 5 stars Take the next step.......2005-01-28

Once you learn to bead crochet, this book will take you further on your journey. The patterns are inspiring and can be worked alone or in combination. Again, the charts and graphs are easy to read and the instructions are easy to follow. You can even learn to graph your own designs (and it works even if you're not an artist!).

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for.......2007-07-03

I guess I was not familiar with the term "bead crochet", but this book is not what I wanted. I was looking for books like "Crochet with Wire"
By: Nancie M. Wiseman and "Crochet Jewelry" By: Sophie Britten.

This book covers Tubular crochet, and crochet that the beading looks more like Pave-studded fabric. Most of the projects look like somebody just tangled a hodge podge of beads together. Not one of the projects appeals to me--they all look very 'hippie' and outdated.

I wish I had read the reviews more carefully before I bought this one.

1 out of 5 stars Thankfully, I didn't buy it.......2007-05-17

Luckily, my small library has an interlibrary loan system. I've been searching for a good book about crocheting with beads. I must agree with another reviewer that the best part was the pictures of the antique pieces.

How totally dissapointing! The author tells us how to make things in her style and her style only, which is what I call a "funky mess".

I don't care whether I like the style or not. I had figured since it was called "A Beadwork How-To Book" that we'd learn basic techniques, but they are lost in the author's "creativity".

Unless you love the look of messy, funky stuff and want to COPY this, I cannot recommend this book at all.

1 out of 5 stars Disapponted in this book.......2007-05-03

I bought this book to learn how to bead crochet. Well, forget it, the directions are so spotty that I cannot imagine anyone being able to follow them. It amazes me that Ms. Barry is a teacher since she is incapable of explaining anything. Also found her designs really ugly and wouldn't want to duplicate them anyway. Buy Linda Lehman's book instead, it's really good.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!.......2007-04-17

I borrowed this book from our library and fell in love with it. I am very picky about the crafting books I choose to spend my money on, that is why I do the library thing first. I do agree that most of the projects are complicated, but it doesn't take long to work up to them. I just love this book and have plans to purchase it. If you are looking for more beginner patterns, try "Simple Glass Beading" by Dorothy Wood.

5 out of 5 stars Instant Inspiration!.......2005-10-24

I can recommend this book because the photograps are well done, as are the instructions. The author obviously knows her stuff and she knows how to share it with others!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars interesting patterns-instructions have problems.......2007-05-18

I like this book. If you are interested in bead crochet ropes, I would recomment it. I especially like the bangle bracelet patterns. However, the first project for beginners is all one color beads. This is almost impossible for beginners. Mark the beginning of a round with a different colored bead, or use a sequence of colors. YOu could also use the beading sequence from the second project with the larger beads from the first project. Also, the author recommends using crochet cotton for the thread. This stuff frays and tangles. To save your sanity, go to a bead store and buy something specifically recommended for beading. There are no diagrams to go with the instructions. I could have used diagrams.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful bead crochet.......2007-03-09

I loved this book, I felt like I learned so much from it. The tutorials are very easy to follow and will have you making a beaded crochet rope quickly. I am an old crocheter but even I learned a few things about how to do bead crochet. If you are wanting to learn this is an excellent book to learn with.

1 out of 5 stars Very basic........2007-05-12

While this book may be good for learning the basics if you have never done anything with crochet or beads. If you are experienced with crochet, you might be disappointed in this booklet as I was. A lot of the technique was common sense and the rest of it is available easily on the internet. I returned my copy.

1 out of 5 stars Not as good as I expected..........2005-10-25

Although this leaflet (it can hardly be classified as a book) has some basic information in it, it's pretty lightweight in terms of instruction and projects. There are much more comprehensive books on the market.

I should have paid attention to the number of pages in the book -- that might have been a hint as to just how helpful it would be on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars bead crochet.......2005-09-07

Cannot review as I just glanced at it and left for the west coast due to the hurricane... I was in New Orleans...
However, I am sure it was fine

5 out of 5 stars Quick and East.......2005-05-21

I am a longtime crocheter, but new to wire and bead crochet. I got many bead crochet books and sat down to figure out where I was going to start and when I got to the filigree bracelets in this book, which were so eyecatching and the book said "make one in a night" and I read the directions and realized I really could easily understand and produce the bracelet in a night, this book became #1.

Product Description

With tapestry crochet, one or more yarns are carried while another is single crocheted. With bead crochet, a bead is added to the front or back of the stitch. Depending on the tension and number of yarns used, the finished fabric can be stiff or supple, and may take any flat or three-dimensional form. Tapestry crochet has the flexibility and portability of crochet, but does not look crocheted. In fact, the surface looks so much like wove fabric, that most people think that tapestry crocheted pieces are made on a loom! In addition to right-handed and left-handed tutorials, this book includes 167 colorful illustrations and photographs, four tapestry crochet papers, and easy to understand instructions (without abbreviations) for purses, bracelets, earrings, and a hat. Seven projects are beaded, six are felted (in a washing machine), and three incorporate both techniques. Crocheted tightly with a small crochet hook or loosely with a large hook, this book has it all!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-07-21

I am a Knitter with a capital K. I use crochet to decorate and edge and embellish my knitting. I don't know what tempted me to Carol Ventura - but I'm hooked. (Sorry for the pun.) The instructions are wonderful, the ideas are as practical as they are fresh, and the technique is an incredible treasure to add to any yarn addict's workbag. The next best thing about these engaging projects is that they do indeed fit in your traveller's workbag - they are portable, always interesting - and yet still easy to pick up and put down. Doesn't matter which book of hers you pick - you can begin the technique from any of them and the only tools you really need are basic size crochet hooks.

I bought this book as a gift. The person I bought it for really enjoyed it.

I haven't tried any of the projects; however, the directions seem to make sense. The author also has a very nice website.

5 out of 5 stars tapestry crochet.......2007-01-16

The third book that Carol has written on the subject.
Easy to understand and follow patterns. A good addition to the library.
Beading and felting, both new to me, well explained and illustrated.
Can stand-alone, as all basic instructions are reiterated.

A new hobby to keep you interested with an old craft.

I would like to see Ms Ventura write a book with more "flat" patterns that we can use for afghans.

5 out of 5 stars A gentle way to learn tapestry crochet-with beads and felting to boot.......2006-11-11

A beautiful, well laid out, colorful book full of information and enthusiasm. Ventura writes from a practical and intimate place earned by what must have been many, many hours experimenting with the techniques, designing and creating the projects, and dealing with the mundane task-joys and pitfalls-of acquiring thread, yarn, and beads.
The illustrations and photos are clear and informative. I needed the very basic beginner instructions supplied as I have minimal experience with crochet-coming from a extensive beadweaving and a bit of knitting and knotting background. She also has complete instructions for left-handed crocheters to get started and never forgets about them. [Instead of her suggestion to read the graph in a mirror, with all the ways we have of reversing images now, I would probably photocopy/print off a reversed graph to work from. If you are worried about respecting copyright laws, obviously check for yourself before doing.]
I also liked that there was a photo for each project in the Table of Contents. From here, I knew exactly which would be my first project. It makes for easier shopping too as I am not constantly flipping through the whole book to find my project and its materials list. I also liked that her "Supplier List" page lists the projects under each supplier-also making shopping easier.
I also liked her selective use of color in the written pattern to make it even easier to read and follow.
Her tips are also very down to earth and useful-like "when choosing a color, keep in mind that darker colors are harder to work with because they are more difficult to see"-and send a newbie off in the direction of self-exploration a little further along.
Her choice of a simple two staple binding also make for a book that lays flat without having to break the spine.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Frustrated.......2007-07-11

Now I get it! I got her book, Beaded Crochet Designs, after I got this DVD and discovered that this DVD is merely a selection of projects from the real book, without the creepy pictures of little girls with too much makeup that are way too reminiscent of poor little JonBinet Ramsey. I found this DVD book quite frustrating. The CD bonus material will not play at all on my computer.
Her demonstration of crochet basics is a very good example of how to crochet with beads but there is not a bit on how to set the piece up, i.e. how long the thread should be, how to string all the beads on the thread first before beginning to crochet, etc. I liked the simple sample piece and would have liked directions on how to make it,the full step by step, but oh no, she wants me to make a one color pearlescent piece instead...boring and frustrating. This is not well thought out. The section on supplies, tools, etc. is good and helpful but again not enough for more stars!

5 out of 5 stars beaded crochet with Ann Benson.......2007-03-08

I really enjoyed this dvd book lesson on crocheting. I have read many books on how to crochet but this gave me hands on experience to view while I was crocheting beads. It was easy following Ann as she spoke through each step. Being a teacher I know that everyone does not learn the same way and this dvd finally helped me to understand crocheting with beads.

4 out of 5 stars Finally - a visual how-to for bead crochet ropes!.......2007-02-12

I've been trying to master the technique of beaded crochet ropes for quite some time now. I'm a visual learner and needed help so when I saw Ann Benson's DVD I scooped it right up and am so glad I did. Her instruction is clear and the camera shots of her crocheting are very easy to follow.

Like other reviewers, I also had problems navigating the DVD (hence the 4 stars). The red dot that is supposed to appear in the main menu does not appear. But once I played the DVD on my laptop I was able to manually access the chapters. Not the most convenient thing - there must be a glitch somewhere - but it was well worth it to receive the instruction (and patterns).

While this is not a top-of-the-line Hollywood production, it more than serves its purpose and I cannot thank Ms. Benson enough for putting this together.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-10-03

Already owning one of Ann Benson's bead crochet books, I was excited at the prospect of a new one. The fact that it was a DVD was not clear when ordering. I was still excited to see what was new, but found the DVD to be very poor quality, and at this point does not work at all.

Leafing throught the few printed pages that accompany the set, most of the patterns are simply rewrites from her earlier book.

This purchase was very disappointing, along with a waste of my money.

1 out of 5 stars It's not a book!.......2006-09-17

Like the other reviewers, I was astounded when the CD/DVD arrived. It is not very well done - you cannot easily move from chapter to chapter and I am not sure that I want to anyway. It does not contain the basic information I wanted - I feel cheated.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for the novice crocheter.......2007-02-07

Book begins with 35 page introduction for beginning crocheter using American terminology (author is English and book was first published in England). This is very useful. Many of the patterns use the beads only after the piece is finished as applique or at the edges. The projects that I find especially interesting are the beaded ruffle scarf, beaded beanie, twenties inspired scarf, slash neck vest, beaded tunic on cover, bikini top, cap sleeved wrap and beaded throw. There are several jewelry items, bags, hats and household accessories. Yarns used are listed at the back. Pictures are good but I find the print a bit small. Yarns are descirbed as sport weight or whatever but the new international number terminology is not used. I think this book is very good with a lot of fine projects to help me use up my leftovers and yarn stash. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Use your imagination...........2007-01-10

Lots of beautiful pics & projects, but lack of technique and directions. For beginner, you might find its hard to apply some of the projects. You need to use your imagination in creating the projects since there are no clear charts, diagrams or pictures showing how the technique are.
