Good for older school agers.......2007-01-12
I bought this for my 8 year old son for Christmas. He ablsolutely LOVES the animal and bug books in Ames collection. However, this book is a bit more complicated in the drawings as far as shading and finishing touches that didn't seem to translate well in this format.
I think he may pick up something about drawing the human form through this, but right now its to complicated for him. Maybe in a few years he'll pick it up again and try some of these.
Not a bad book just not my favorite in the series. I think this might be more useful to someone older who wants to create thier own clip art like drawings maybe.
A great learning tool........2000-04-04
My compliments to Lee Ames and Creig Flessel for producing this "DRAW 50 PEOPLE" book. The step-by-step application to Mr. Flessel's wonderful drawings are an inspiration to the future artists in this world. Anyone wishing to improve their artistic skills (beginner or accomplished) would do well by following the examples in this book,(as well as the rest of the draw 50 series). I always say "There's nothing like learning from the BEST"!
Draw 50 People.......1999-12-28
Draw 50 People is a great book. The book, like others in the series, has the would-be artist drawing right away. The drawings/directions are clear, well done and easy to follow, with excellent results. It's great for kids and I even took a couple of ideas myself. I highly reccomend this book. Creig Flessel and Lee Ames did beautiful work in this book. Two thumbs up!
Only for kids.......1999-07-27
I thought this book would be a little creative. I was wrong. The book is weak for a couple of reasons: first, instead of teaching how to draw specific elements that make these characters it shows how to draw individual entries. So if your child wants to learn how to draw a viking, (s)he will only see one perspective and nothing more. No technique on how to draw the helmet, the garb etc.. Second, the book doesn't follow basic techniques to learn how to draw. In my opinion this book should be for 5 year olds in the house that are tired of coloring books. Buy a Jack Hamm book if you want to learn how to draw!
Book Description
Contrary to popular myth, the Vikings had a reputation for neatness and their fashions were copied far beyond the realms of Scandinavia. Those who could afford to displayed a love of fine clothes made from silks, from lightweight worsteds in subtly woven twills, and from the finest of linens. This accessible new book is the first to tackle the question of what the Vikings wore, drawing on evidence from art and archaeology, literature, and linguistics to arrive at a fresh understanding of the nature of Viking clothing, covering rich and poor, men and women across Scandinavia. It includes an overview of Viking textiles and dyeing, and an exploration of cloth production and clothing in the context of Viking society as a whole, as well as a detailed consideration of both male and female outfits and a new interpretation of the suspended dress.

Not for the amateur re-enactor.......2006-09-18
Thor Ewing's book is well written and it does a good job of laying out the current state of Norse costume research. However, this is not a book for the amateur re-enactor who wants to make a "Viking costume." It will not give you step-by-step instructions on how to make a "Viking costume."
In many ways, the book raises more questions than it answers and I forsee it sparking some excellent and spirited discussions among those of us who have been researching Norse costume for many years. It's a fine book which has given me a great deal to think about and I am truly glad I purchased it. But, if you are new or fairly new to the Society for Creative Anachronism or other Dark Ages re-enactment groups, I would pass on this book until you have done more research or you could end up very confused.
Thought-provoking survey of a specialized field.......2006-07-07
Ewing's book is not designed as a how-to or a basic reference for reenactors. Instead, it surveys the current knowledge and scholarly thinking about Viking-era costume and challenges the reader to consider different theories that are consistent with the evidence. An enjoyable, educational read for costume-enthusiasts and recreationists willing to think outside the box instead of looking for easy answers.

Reference Work.......2006-03-21
I bought this book as a source of inspiration for tattoos with a Norse cultural feel. It provided that and more. With hundreds of illustrations sourced from real life examples (rune stones, sword guards, jewellery etc) and from multiple developmental stages in "Norse" artwork, it provides an easy to use reference for those wishing to explore their Norse heritage. Well worthwhile for those Asatruar or re-enactors looking for real life examples to base their craft or tattoo work on.
Should have known better.......2004-01-24
I was very disapointed with this book. But I should have known, Dover Publications tends to produce shoddy material. I was not impressed with the quality of the art work. I expected to see clearer designs. It looked to me like they let a five year old trace some pictures from a history book.
All though it is from a different culture I would recomend Celtic Designs by Chris Down. The artwork is amazingly clear and very reproducable! If you see this book then you will know exactly why Viking Designs is such a let down!
Good Art and Well Sourced.......2004-01-21
This book was everything I wanted it to be. The artwork is clear Black and White linework, with notations on each page about where the design came from and what it was used on. I would recommend this to anyone interested in Historical Reproductions.
Book Description
The bold, fanciful designs featured here have been adapted from authentic Viking metalwork, textiles, stone carvings, and ceramics. Depicted are interwoven motifs reminiscent of Celtic art, real and mythological creatures, dragon-slaying heroes on horseback, and much more. Illustrators and craftworkers will find this collection ideal for a host of projects.187 black-and-white illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
A lot of fun and useful designs.......2007-07-04
The images are black-and-white. These particular designs tend to have a lot of interweaving patterns vaguely like Keltic knotwork but more irregular and "organic looking". There was plenty of detail to work with, and several formats are included. I used the TIFFs and converted to my own GIFs so that I could make the white parts transparent; this was quick and easy to do. I've had a hard time finding clip art suitable for my website so I am glad to have found several of the Dover clipart books.

Marvels of Ancient Europe.......2002-12-13
Aidan Meehan has a great ability to combine solid art history with the never-ending fascination of Celtic artwork without putting the reader off with excess pedantry. In this book in particular, his historic discussions surprised me on several occasions. My initial belief that Celtic art as an isolated form is that of a rank amateur, and Meehan does a fine job of disabusing me and showing how Celtic decoration and illumination started with oriental influences which then mixed with Teutonic and Viking to create a beautiful synthesis.
Of course , the history is framed with Meehan's own renditions of the artwork, each with appropriate discussion of both their unique features and the interlinked development as Irish and Viking met first in conflict and then in trade. Since Meehan's primary audience is artists, he spends the best part of the book showing not just the patterns, but how they are formed and woven into a whole.
Aidan and Oisin Meehan's illustration and calligraphy are strong and clear, with some 220 illustrations. There is a great romance to these images, that has carried forward even into far more modern art. Aidan Meehan is one of those who have dedicated his life's work to keeping these traditions alive.
Celtic versus Viking art.......2000-03-31
I was thrilled to find this book, being of both Irish-Scots and Viking descent. Much of the art of the Gaels and the Norse is similar, due to both a common origin, proximity, raiding, and trading. I've had books on Viking art, harder to find than Celtic, and many on Celtic. But although there was great similarity in the designs, (and also resembles much of the Scythian art which brings us to anthropological discussions) I found nothing to discuss the differences until I found this book. As I discussed in 'Spiral Patterns' by Meehan, his books are delightful sources for the serious interest. He has a way of combining a historical study with the construction of the art that is simply delightful. My favorite in this book is the whimsical 'gripping beast' discussion. Otherwise, though it is hard to describe exactly how, by the end of the book I was not only exposed to a number of Viking designs that I had never seen before, but now able to tell the difference at a glance between the two art forms. The Viking form is less restrained than the Celtic art that reached its height in dreary volumes, the designs such as 'the early viking style' shown have a energetic and powerful energy then the overly tame knotwork. In addition there ARE some examples worth using as clip art, but the main point of the book is serious information as to the history and the meaning of the designs, which other books simply show.
The Dragon and the Griffin.......2000-03-29
This is an excellent book for those who are interested in Celtic art. As with all of the books by Aidan Meehan that I have read so far, this book is historically informative and provides easy to understand techniques for artists wishing to master celtic art or manuscript illumination.
Book Description
Fanciful designs, adapted from authentic Viking art, depict spiraling, interwoven images, real and mythological creatures, and an ancient rune stone portraying warriors in battle. 16 full-page illustrations printed on translucent paper.

Line drawings for craftsman or excellent for tattoo flash.......2004-01-09
This 64-page book contains black and white line-drawings of motifs and designs from Viking art and artifacts. Many are enlarged versions of designs found in Wilson and Klint-Jensen's Viking Art (Wilson, David M. and Ole Klindt-Jensen. Viking Art. 2nd ed. London: George Allen & Unwin. 1980.), plus motifs usually shown only in artifact photos elsewhere. The major weakness of this book is the lack of any text identifying or discussing the various images presented - it's purely a collection of designs, ranging in period from the earliest part of the Viking Age through the start of the more medieval Romanesque style art of the Scandinavian Middle Ages. Contains a lot of knotwork and "gripping beast" type motifs.
Book Description
The superb skills of the Vikings as artists and craftspeople were evident in all areas of their daily lives, in their jewellery, wood and stone carvings, ceramics, textiles and metalwork. The designs in this book attempt to encapsulate their artistry: the beautiful interwoven patterns, the stylised designs and the flowing lines. Here you will find illustrations that can adapted for your own projects, or used directly to decorate textiles, china, glass, metal, wood and more. You can create your own greetings cards, produce personalised posters, or use elements of the designs to create borders and frames.

Book Description
This volume deals with one of the most controversial issues in writings about early medieval history: the presence of Scandinavians, known as Rus, and their impact on Eastern Europe during the Viking Age. These studies give for the first time an extensive and detailed picture of the Norse population in the East by using, besides written narratives, a wide range of archaeological sources. The seven chapters survey the background, then depict the first Norse centres and sites of Norse colonists in the north-western Russia; further chapters contain information about the great number of settlements in the Volga region and, finally describe the activities of a group of Rus that resulted in creation of the principality of Kiev. With the help of numerous illustrations the contents of the book clarify many problems and support the conclusion that in the East real Norse societies existed that were an important and natural part of the Scandinavian värld.

Viking vitamins.......2003-08-09
This is a very interesting book on a subject about which there are many myths and a lot of misconceptions.
I'll rate it four stars due to the following qualities that I think it has :
The first two stars I give is for the very beautiful photos and illustrations. They give a rare glimpse of the lost viking world, I don't think that many people today realize the great artistic skill that the blacksmiths, woodcarvers and shipbuilders had when the viking kingdoms reached their zenith. Viking blacksmiths were masters of metallurgy and their complex, yet elegant designs leaves one often speechless, and with the distinct impression that these people were the cultural and trendsetting leaders of Europe, not just the ones who dominated it in the strictly military sense of the word. The photos and illustrations put it all nicely on display.
The third star I give is for the very well written discription of the history of the Scandinavian countries, especially because it, which is rather unusual, also include a distinct description of the differences between the respective states. Often it is described as if it is all the same, but the Nordic countries over an area some four times bigger than France so obviously when you have such a huge area, there are considerable regional differences.
The fourth and last star I give is for the detailed explanation that we get of the norse mythology with it's whole pantheon of gods and how it influenced the warriors, kings and aristocrats alike, in the viking armies, so as to be highly motivated to fight to the death to get to Valhalla. It resembles Islams idea of "Jihad" or holy war, where the dead heroes goes straight to paradise.
Any downside? Yes one, I am a bit dissapointed about the fact that the author doesn't write anything about the underlying political reasons for the viking ekspansion, nothing as serious as centuries of prolonged military campaigns comes out of the blue, for no apparent reason. He seems to believe in the old myth that it "just happened", like a natural phenomenon such as an earthquake, a violent storm or an erupting vulcano. "Brave young men" simply felt like "going out on an adventure" to "explore the world" and "created a new life in freedom in new lands", a bit like settlers in Americas wild west in the 19.th century. There was no organization behind it, they just felt like doing it, so they did it - and when they didn't feel like doing it anymore, they stopped - end of story!
Such a view is completely ridiculous and unhistoric. Around the year 800 A.D. a country like Denmark was amongst the most advanced and wellorganized communities anywhere in Europe, at least when you look at the military power of the king. The king's power was also much more centralized and strong than many people think, because they have this view of the Scandinavian countries as somewhat poorly organized in this period. So make no mistake; The viking expansion was not a result of "private enterprise", local people from tiny villages suddenly deciding to conquer the world without any sane explanation, but instead it was a logic consequence of the Scandinavian (mainly Danish) kings political and expansionist ambitions as they unfolded.
But this book is certainly worth to buy and read anyway.
Color photos abound in a presentation.......2002-12-05
Vikings: Battle At The End Of Time is a richly illustrated introduction to the culture and history of the Vikings, using artifacts and wonders to reveal the themes and symbols of the Viking world. Color photos abound in a presentation which lends a strong visual impact to early Viking history.
