Book Description
Imagine a box made of paper! Boxes are one of the most popular formats of the age-old papercraft of origami. This delightful book is entirely devoted to the creation of origami boxes-plain or fancy, playful or practical, and elaborate boxes topped with cranes, butterflies, lilies, stars, and
more.
FABULOUS ORIGAMI BOXES includes designs for nesting boxes, simple triangle and square boxes and more complex hexagonal and octagonal boxes. Detailed illustrations provide step-by-step instructions on the correct way to crease and fold origami paper. Many of the designs are made of one sheet of
paper, but some combine individual units with intriguing results.
Both practical and lovely, these boxes can be used for gift-giving, storing trinkets, or simply for display.

Not for a self-taught beginner.......2007-03-09
This is a wonderful book, but I jumped too far ahead of my abilities to follow these instructions. if you truly are a self-taught beginner, perhaps starting with something written specifically for beginners is appropriate.
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.......2007-02-21
Fuse's boxes are really, really stunning. I can only add my voice to the chorus of reviewers that find this book highly useful.
The boxes are fairly easy to fold. Although I am an experienced folder of origami, I feel that a complete novice could pick this up and make most of the boxes with a little time and patience. (I can zip through most of them in less than 15 minutes, including the assembly.)
Everyone who has recieved a gift from me inside a personally-folded box has commented on the beauty and sturdiness of the box. If you use a nice, thick, cloth-like washi, the box will last for a very long time.
Check out Fuse's other work in modular origami, it's worth your time and effort.
A gift givers delight; very fast service! .......2007-01-19
I got just what I wanted and faster than I expected, especially Christmas time. It looks like great fun.
Thanks,
Sue
Breathtaking!.......2006-02-12
My first book by Ms. Fuse was not in English, and it was also my first unit origami book. I have been hooked ever since. The folding is not bad at all, although fitting the pieces together is like putting together a three-dimensional puzzle. The result is surprisingly sturdy, too. I find it a peaceful way to take a break and get my mind off of everyday annoyances. The word "Fabulous" in the title is well-deserved. When put together properly, the lids are decorated with geometric designs, lilies, bunny rabbits, a heart, butterflies, a crane... These are not images, but three-dimensional. If you love origami, boxes, math, or puzzles, this book will amaze you. Given the amount of pleasure you can get out of a few sheets of paper and this book, it is a real bargain.
Beautiful origami boxes.......2005-10-09
This delightful origami book features a collection of designs by Tomoko Fuse which have been published elsewhere in her Japanese language books but which appear here accompanied by English text. As always Miss Fuse's boxes are beautifully finished both inside and out and choosing the correct paper can add a great deal to the quality of the finished product.
These little boxes consist of a number of sheets of paper slotted together to form each part and some are really not that easy to do. The flower box and some of the other decorative tops are quite tricky to figure out and absolute accuracy is required in the folding. Having said this I have made most of the boxes in the book and the instructions are in Miss Fuse's clear and easy to follow style. All of the boxes are made up and photographed clearly in the book, both in a separate sumptuous gallery section and in black and white photographs alongside the instructions.
I would not recommend this book for a complete beginner but someone who has done some folding and has mastered the basic models should be able to manage and enjoy making most of the items in it.

best in its field (of one).......2007-10-01
This is the best book I've seen (and I've looked through EVERYTHING at Barnes and Noble and Borders stores) on making all kinds of three-dimensional paper creations. In fact, it's pretty much one of a kind. True, as another reviewer says, it doesn't have patterns for the illustrated projects, but it does have good instructions. I would think that most people would want to come up with their own works by using the illustrated techniques, and being inspired by the author's finished projects. After all, the idea is to be creative, isn't it?
Where are the patterns?.......2007-06-27
The illustrations were beautiful, and I was disappointed to learn that patterns were not included.
Good artistic selections.......2007-04-03
Diane Maure-Mathison does a good job of putting together a nice selection of creative ideas with paper. She focuses on creativity and simple ideas that can be easily expanded. Her work on pop-ups which I was looking for covers the basics but does not go into the details of more complex design.

Great book!.......2006-05-24
I got this book for Christmas last year. I've enjoyed using its helpful diagrams to make boxes for myself and for gifts. I was able to easily follow the diagrams and produce some beautiful boxes. I'd recommend this book to anyone who has some origami background and is looking for some fun new diagrams to try!
Excellent.......2006-02-02
The directions were easy to follow...but putting the boxes together wasn't as easy to figure out.
Super book on origami boxes.......2005-09-28
This lovely book is a reprint of the material found in some of Ms Fuse's Japanese origami boxes books and contains a compilation of models from some of her earlier books. The boxes are a delight to make though they do require care and accuracy in the folding and must be made from accurately cut sheets of paper. All of the pieces displayed in the book produce attractive results though some do take more time than others.
I find that Tomoko Fuse boxes once made are excellent for display as well as being great for practical purposes. I currently have several of these boxes on my desk at work acting as receptacles for doctors' dictation tapes and paper clips (what's more they have been there for several years and are still in good shape), and they make great gifts as well.
This is a lovely book which will suit the folder who has mastered the basics of origami and is ready to move into intermediate level work. I still come back to it occasionally even several years after having purchased my copy and always enjoy folding the pieces in it.
Great Origami Book!.......2005-08-24
This is a great book for origami and box lovers alike. The pictures, although black and white, are very clear and simple. At every step, there's a picture along with symbols, and sometimes a written instruction or two. Putting the boxes together can sometimes be tricky, but if you examine the drawings you will almost always be able to complete the box without becoming too frustrated. Only one of the designs I have not been able to decipher, a wonderful fan-like patterned box....Overall this is a great book with very varied boxes, from square ones with simple designs to octagonal boxes with complicated tops. But whichever one you choose to make, they are always beautiful! Got to get back to my folding!
Cute little boxes, crap folding instructions........2005-04-07
I wouldn't recommend this book to a beginer, unless said beginer can look at the finished folded product and reverse engineer it. Forget trying to get a precise fold from following the diagrams. Though I was able to master the lid of one of these boxes no thanks to the diagrams, going onto the base ceased to be a pleasurable activity. I'm not heavily into origami, I just wanted to do a few projects for fun. I might as well be re-writing the book myself if I'm going to fold any more of these projects. I wasted my money, but at least I've spared the world of the curse of one more of these books since my copy it now torn apart and rests in the watse receptacle.

Quick & Easy is a PERFECT title........2007-10-01
Being new to origami boxes, the title caught my attention, and didn't disappoint. The book is only 62 pages, however it teaches as much as most other bigger books do. It is spiral bound, so it lays flat during the folding steps (if you already do origami, you know how important this is). The boxes are very easy, some requiring only 10-12 steps to fully construct. The designs of the boxes are beautiful for being so simple. The folding illustrations are very, very clear and easy to understand. It is also a plus that the book comes with enough paper (60 sheets in 6 bright colors) to make each box.
Of the 15 or so books I have on origami, I would put this in the top 5, as one that I will use over and over again.
Great modular origami.......2002-09-20
This book is probably the single reason modular origami continues to gain new fans. Pick up this book, and fold the beginning boxes... In no time, you'll be hooked and want to fold every box, shortly after that you'll want to experiment with different papers/colors/patterns/etc. This book, (while fundamentally simple..the charm of modular...) has a wealth of great boxes. The best part is, when you are done, the boxes can be used as gifts, or gift boxes, and look great for any celebration. I highly recommend this book to all origami fans, but not too people who are only interested in finding difficult models.
This Book is the best.......2002-02-21
What else should I say .. it's the best ! really
Pocket size reference for boxes.......2001-08-04
Looking at this book again to see what others thought of it, I am surprise I had not written a review of it, especially since I used this book or rather booklet rather often.
Tomoko Fuse is famous for its boxes. Boxes are also well liked by the masses but unfortunately most are unable to differentiate between one square box from another despite the differences in outward appearances in patterns or designs. Hence, if I need to quickly make simple boxes, this booklet is ideal and easy to carry with me.
Three kinds of boxes are taught with their variations, square boxes (with partitions), triangular boxes and hexagonal boxes. I missed the octagonal boxes which is a favourite of mine too. All boxes have lids included.
Tomoko has many designs but this booklet teaches the simpler ones but the effect is the same when compared with the more intricate ones.
I would strongly recommend this book even if you purchase every book on boxes churned out by Tomoko Fuse. I try to collect all of them and I still find this booklet worth it.
Great package!.......1999-04-13
I bought this for myself but it would make an excellent gift. It contains a compact ring-bound color booklet and two packets of origami paper. These are beginning to low-intermediate folds and the results are impressive. I make the boxes for my daughter but have had requests from my office co-workers.

The addition of an abundance of origami squares in a range of different colors plus a load of two different patterned squares sets an origami novice up for folding for quite a while. I highly recommend this book to the new origami folder.
