The toy that got away...........2002-03-24
It is amazing the memories that this book, and it's companion volume on Sear's Wishbooks, can stir up. So many other childhood memories of family, friends, school, neigborhoods come flooding back- all triggered by some favorite toy that you either owned or dreamed of owning. Everying from Marx playsets, Remco greats like the Big Caesar Roman Galley and the Barracuda Sub, Ideal classics like Robot Commando.... And let us not forget Hopalong Cassidy, Tom Corbett, Lone Ranger, Batman, etc. merchandise. Be careful though, or you'll end up on EBAY with this book in one hand searching the listings for that favorite toy that got away (it is amazing how many are available at reasonable prices....)

a terrific journey home.......2001-12-28
for those of us who grew up in a certain era and were products of the commercial age this book will bring back many memories. having had a dad who worked in the field until i was 7 i was spoiled and got about anything i wanted. try explaining to a 7 year old that dad no longer gets all the freebies he wants! well worth the time for any boi boomer!
Pictures were much too fuzzy........2000-08-29
I liked the catalog, but was dissapointed to see that all of the pictures were black and white (I think I do remember pages in the 60's that had color). It looks as though someone just copied the pictures on a plain copier, and slapped this book together. The idea was very good, but don't expect the quality of true Sears Catalog pages.
Ah, the memories.......1999-10-12
I come from a family of 7 boys. We all grew up wishfully dreaming every Christmas of GI Joe and erector sets found on the pages of the Sears Wishbook. This book brought so many memories rushing back - of things I fondly remembered and things I had forgotten about - I can't count them. My wife bought it for me last Xmas, I'm going to buy a copy for all my brothers this Xmas.
A fantastic "time machine" resource of boy baby boomer toys.......1999-06-19
While my family didn't really shop much out of the Sears Catalog, the pictures and descriptions of the toys in this book are as close to a time machine as I can imagine. As I flipped through the pages, toys that either I or my brother or my friends used to own and play with jumped out at me, one after another.. as I thought "Geeze! I had one of those!" or "Wow! I always wanted one of those!" :) This book is sheer nostalgia for guys who grew up in the 50s and early 60s. And the original prices for the toys are unbelievable... just a couple bucks, many for less than a dollar (!) for toys that now bring hundreds on the various web auction sites or at antique malls. I was also fascinated to see how many toys were sold back then that threw off sparks, or fired objects, or involved electricity or hot plastic, metal, all kinds of things considered so horribly "hazardous" today in our modern politically correct world, where the fun seems to have been legislated out of nearly everything. Back then, toy cars that "threw off sparks" were actually advertised as that being a fun feature, not a safety hazard! This is also a valuable resource for old toy buyers and sellers, just to be able to see an original illustration with its original retail price and to know what year it was made and first sold. If you can't get in a time machine and go back to a 1950s toy store, this book is just about the next best thing.

Book Description
Even now that we're all grown up, we can't help but look back on our childhood holidays and hope to recapture that elusive spirit of joyful anticipation. Celebrating Christmas is so often about nostalgia. With a nod and a wink to the days of Christmas past, It's a Wonderful Christmas presents classic images of the Yuletide icons of mid-20th-century America.
Bubbler lights and glow-in-the-dark icicles. Catalogues crammed with toys. Norad bulletins tracking Rudolph's red nose through the nighttime sky. Along with hundreds of such quintessentially American illustrations, author Susan Waggoner stocking-stuffs her lively text with fascinating bits of information, lore, and lists. Wonder what the all-time most popular Christmas song is? How the tradition of the department store Santa got started? The answers are here. Loaded with images of vintage Christmas cards, wrapping paper, magazine ads, Lionel toy trains, and more, all in full color, this charming book will appeal to anyone who associates Christmas with home movies, "The Chipmunk Song," and Santa relaxing with an ice-cold bottle of Coca-Cola. AUTHOR BIO: SUSAN WAGGONER is the author of several illustrated books, including Vintage Cocktails (STC). A native of Minnesota, she currently lives in New York City.
Customer Reviews:
Lady, ya need to make it longer!.......2007-09-15
I am a Christmas junkie, always have been, so this was a great gift idea for one such as me, and my wife saw this and pounced on it straight off.
I don't think I'm the only one, either -- Christmas is the whole reason for having a calendar, for enduring summer, a reward for keeping our yaps shut during Near-holidays, or Faux holidays, like Labor Day or Valentine's. Christmas is life at its surreal best, the time when we get nostalgic for stuff that didn't really happen. We might be the first group to confuse recollection of television shows with our own lives, and, hey, we REVEL in that.
One moment is typical -- the window stencils and the spray junk that made the images on one's windows. It came right off, but it still irritated the bee-whosis out of our mom. Here is where things get slightly mystical for me. The photo brought back smells and sounds and body memories -- I can think of no other way to describe them -- in a heady and bittersweet rush. I wanted more -- I want more.
This is the one criticism I had -- don't you think something so crucial to American life and light should be a trifle more exhaustive? Couldn't this have been a coffee-table sized book? Are there sequels planned? Maybe year by year, throwing wide the focus? This felt more like an article that was beefed up a bit, and I think Ms. Waggoner could cast a wider net and make her and her publisher much more money and make us Christmas junkies much happier.
Nevertheless, it is highly recommended, buy yourself a copy and a few for friends -- it would make a great Christmas gift, actually -- and get a few copies of the real MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET while you're at it. How are you coming on memorizing the dialogue in A CHRISTMAS STORY, by the way?
JOURNEY TO THE PAST.......2007-07-16
I absolutely loved this book, "It's A Wonderful Christmas: The Best of the Holidays 1940-1965. It took the reader back to the traditions and simpler times of the era. The book gave the history of Christmas' past.
Great pictures of all the Christmas nostalgia!!! I really reminisced about the toys of the 50's and 60's. I had most of them!!
My parents enjoyed the book also!!! My Mom used to work at Woolworth's and it brought back many memories!!!
An awesome book to purchase and put on your coffee table for the holidays!
Love this book........2007-05-13
I really like this book. It covers all the topics and has plenty of photos. Though I missed most of this time period, I just love this era. Full of nostalgia.
A great look at back at they heyday of Christmas' past.......2007-05-10
I spotted this bok while temping at one of Amazon's fulfillment center and purchased it as from my quick perusal of said book I thiought it looked interesting.
Oh boy, it very much is and I'm glad I bought it even though it took several months before they could send it. It was well worth the wait as I love seeing the items for sale back in the day. Then again, I enjoy estate sales and such so this was right up my alley.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and wished it went in deeper into the psyche of the times but oh well. It was still a very good read non the less and it's more of a coffee table book than anything else
Definately worth it for that alone.
christmas book.......2007-03-31
I love this book. It has things in it from when i was a kid. The pictures are great too.

Great Saturday afternoon read.......2004-02-21
Every page you go "oh yeah" I remember that one ..
Who Knew that Dolls Aren't A 'Girls' Toy'?.......2001-10-26
As a collector of hard plastic dolls, I'd hoped that this would be a helpful guide to identifying dolls of the 1950s and determining their original accessories. But there are very few dolls depicted and the coverage is inconsistent. There are no dolls in the first selection (for 1950), 2 pages for 1951, none for 1952, none for 1953, 2 pages for 1954, 5 pages for 1955, 1/2 page for 1956, none for 1957, none for 1958, none for 1959, 5 pages for 1960 (that year's excerpt from the Wish Book is all dolls), 1/2 page for 1962, 1 page for 1963, none for 1965, 2 pages for 1966, none for 1967, 2 pages for 1968, and 2 pages for 1969.
The explanation for this cursory treatment of dolls in a book titled "Girls' Toys"? The author evidently was reserving them for another compilation, advertised in this volume, titled _Doll and Teddy Bear Department_. That book showcases the doll and bear pages from the _Sears WishBooks_ from 1950-69. (...)
Aside from silently restricting the doll-coverage in order to produce a further volume, the author has selected for some years pictures of exactly the same toys (the electric piano, the tea sets, the toy kitchens), so the coverage is repetitive.
I was led to buy this book by the recommendations of the other reviewers, but if, like me, your primary interest is in the 1950s and in doll collecting, I would advise you to save your money.
Awe Those Childhood Memories!.......2000-05-20
This is really a great book for the Baby Boomer Generation! I have a super time just looking at all the childhood toys that I had totally forgotten existed. My Favorites are from the 1960's! If you are a Chatty Cathy collecctor then this is a Must Have book....Her Sears ads are in here!
An invaluable resource for collectors........1998-12-30
Thomas Holland's book Girls' Toys of the fifties and sixties is a faithful reproduction of the fantastic Sears Christmas catalog toy pages from 1950 to 1969. The large 8 1/2 x 11 inch format of the book allows it to show close ups of the popular toys from each of these years. These pictures are an invaluable resource to help collectors of toys from this era decide what pieces actually came with the toys. As a collector of tin dollhouses, I found the pictures a huge help in identifying the furniture and tiny accessories for each of my houses. The only drawback to the book is the fact that it is in black and white. I enjoyed this book immensely, it was like being a kid again, devouring each page of toys and memories.

Complete reference to Lladro figurines.......2007-04-19
This reference is not intended to be a price guide for secondary values on Lladro figurines, and does not present itself as that - and has never been that. This new edition is set up as the prior editions and is a complete reference to all the pieces produced by the Lladro brothers from Valencia, Spain. Over 4000 porcelain objects from 1941 through the latest productions of 2006 are included. The figurines are organized by theme for easy identification. Each entry includes name, photograph, reference number, height, activity status (retired, etc), issue year and price, last retail price if there was a change, plus retirement year and price. All this info makes collectors completely informed regarding the status of the pieces and would serve as a reference in determining collectibility and value - based on rarity, status, and last retail.

THIS INFORMATION IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE IN THIS GUIDE (WAS AVAILABLE IN ALL PREVIOUS GUIDES- 2003-2004.

Indispensible Resource for Christmas Music Buffs!.......2004-01-25
Goldmine's Neely has once again produced a gem of a book, this time focusing on the oft-neglected niche of Christmas music. Well documented, with lots of color glossy pages of rare album covers, this is a must-have for those of you addicted to holiday vinyl.
The book's only shortcomings: (1) It has now been almost seven years since its publication, it would be nice if Goldmine would issue an updated version of the book every few years to update its content; and (2) the book contains few international titles, of which there are hundreds if not thousands, particularly from the Western European countries (where most of our modern-day Christmas celebration traditions originated!). It would be nice to see more of them incorporated into a future edition.
Well organized and written by someone who obviously is passionate about the genre, I highly recommend this publication.
The Ultimate Bible Of Christmas Music.......2000-08-18
Even during the off season I find myself thumbing through this book, it's a great source of information on collecting rare, hard to find holiday records. Plenty of singles and albums are listed that are worth hundreds of dollars if they're in mint condition and have a picture sleeve cover. It is also fun to look up the names of favorite artists & groups to see what, if any, holiday tunes they may have recorded. So next time you're cleaning out your attic, basement or in back of your closet, if you come across an old box or bin of 45s and/or albums-poke through, you never know if some hidden treasure is in there, and not just Christmas music either! Tim Neely has a few Goldmine Collectors guides out there and all are tops. Very highly recommended.
The Best Guide For Collecting Christmas Music.......1998-09-16
If you are into collecting Christmas Music of every variety whether traditional, pop, rock, etc.than this is the book for you! It lists every artist who ever recorded Christmas songs and hymns, and it also gives a listing of the worth of the original vinyl record(according to the condition of it,of course). A fun book to browse through even if you just want to see what's out there & perhaps to make some additions to your collection.

IF YOU BUY THEM, YOU WON'T SEND THEM.......2007-07-01
They are just to unique too give away and will make better holiday decorations than holiday greetings. Sabuda is genius.
This item is a steal!.......2007-06-02
I bought five boxes of these cards -- one so I can keep the complete set for myself and four more for individual holiday cards. Each is a little morsel of what we have come to expect from the books. Only problem is I have a lot of friends who I have shared the wonderful Robert Sabuda books with over the years and I know that they will want the whole set too. May have to get a few more boxes for them.
Unique Christmas Cards.......2007-02-17
I was very pleased with the quality and construction of these cards. They are high quality and precision made.. and very unique :)
They all worked perfectly. There were definite favorites in the pack and ones I didn't like so much but since there are 26 of them, I had plenty to send out that i did like.
Recipients were pleased with the cards and thought them unique as well.
Be aware though that the cards are small and the popup portion takes up most of the space in the card. There is not much room to write anything.
A Note: Most people didn't notice that each card was associated with a letter of the alphabet. Be sure to point out to them the notation on the back of the card so they can see what the pop-up relates to :0
Pop-up cards are great!!.......2007-01-19
I purchased 2 boxes of these unique Christmas cards. I look forward to sending them this year. I have also purchased many boxes of Robert Sabuda's Holiday Pop-up cards - recently I chose 4 designs, the tree, doves, ornament and Santa with sleigh. I always get responses from those to whom I've sent these unique cards. I also love the Poinsetta and Snowflakes, but my favorite is the tree. I shall continue to buy these cards each year.
Very unique.......2007-01-16
I really enjoy the Sabuda pop up books and gave them a Christmas gifts last year. So when I found the Christmas cards, I knew that was what I had to send this year as cards. I had very many complements on the cards and they were the talk at the Christmas party.
