Book Description

The first comprehensive how-to book on the topic! Contemporary ceramists have adapted traditional printmaking procedures to transfer images onto clay surfaces. And, with this thorough resource, anyone can take advantage of these techniques in their own home studio—even those with no printmaking background. The simple processes don’t require fancy equipment. Use silk-screen decals with light-sensitive emulsions to create a master image: then cover with glazes, and voilá! Use colored slips for unique monoprints. Work with stencils, relief blocks, or stamps, trying a variety of materials to mark the clay surface. Each method is carefully laid out in numerous photos, and shown on a finished piece. More than 100 images by leading contemporary artists showcase the techniques and provide a wealth of inspiration.

Image Transfer on Clay: Screen, Relief, Decal & Monoprint Techniques (A Lark Ceramics Book)
I could not find one image I thought was appealing. This book was perhaps over my green head. I found the designs stuffy and the techniques way to complicated.

5 out of 5 stars Worthwhile........2007-10-05

I'm a total novice and some of this is over my head, but enough of it is helpful enough to enable me to get started. The author is also very gracious about returning emails and answering questions.

5 out of 5 stars Great handbook.......2007-08-09

I am a potter and I run a "paint your own pottery" studio. This book was just what I needed to ensure customer requests (as well as my own requirements) can be met as needed. Specifically I was interested in decal transfer to pottery, and the answer is complete in this book. I would recommend it to any potter or pyop studio owner. It's an invaluable resource.

Book Description

No other volume has ever presented such a diverse and captivating collection of contemporary animal-themed ceramics. Juried by distinguished artist and educator Joe Bova, this magnificent gallery includes pieces from an international group of artists; the beautifully crafted works range from the representational to the abstract, from artful realism to provocative surrealism (including animal-human hybrids). Ann Marais’ image of a waterfowl painted onto a porcelain dish has a restrained, Asian quality. Sharkus’ painted and smoke-fired stoneware turtle could easily be mistaken for the living creature. Bova provides astute and illuminating commentary overall, with selected artists’ notes.

2 out of 5 stars 500 animals in clay.......2007-08-28

Without being able to review the book beforehand, I was disappointed that the figures were so very complex. I had hoped that judging from the cover bunny that they may match my elementary start at sculping simple clay figures.

5 out of 5 stars Not zoology 101...........2007-08-26

I work in ceramic materials, and this book has to be right beside 500 figures as my 2 very favorite books from lark. I am not bothered by the lack of technical information, usually if one has been working in ceramics for a while, it is pretty easy to see what the artist used, and the book does provide descriptions in glazing methods and clay bodies!
Mostly, I found this book a hoot in seeing how other artist view critters, the artistic interpretation is amazing, and often very humorous! Again, I took my copy to the shared studio I work in, and everyone was spellbound at the variety of works...My copy is getting a bit dusy now...I might order a second one, and give my old one to the studio library...

5 out of 5 stars Great inspirational book.......2007-05-20

As a potter, I love books like this just as much as those with more technical information. I turn to them over and over when the muse is taking a little siesta. Tons of great ideas here for everyone, no matter what your style.

5 out of 5 stars 500 Animals in Clay: Contemporary Expressions of the Animal Form.......2007-01-15

Like all the 500 Lark books this one has beautiful photographs and lots of inspiration. If you are an animal lover, and ceramist, like I am you will love it. I would like a little more information about how the pieces are created, but that is rarely the case with these books - still well worth the price.

It's hard to imagine a material more versatile than polymer clay. What other medium yields perfectly convincing simulations of everything from marble, wood, ivory, and jade to metal, porcelain, mosaic, enamel, and semiprecious stones--not to mention flowers, food, and sculptural forms? With a thoroughness rarely found in other books on the subject, Sue Heaser explains all of these methods and more, supplementing her excellent instructions with good, clear photos. Although she includes a number of full step-by-step projects, this is primarily a techniques-driven presentation. Beginning with the preliminaries of materials, preparation, color mixing, baking, and other basics, Heaser then moves on to clay manipulation (beads, millefiori, molds, vessels, frames, flowers), sculpting (simple animals, faces, armatured figures), embellished treatments (stamping, painting, metallic effects, image transfers), and simulations (stones, antique effects, wood, miniatures). Chapter-opening spreads showcase exquisite works by a variety of polymer clay artists, and a helpful appendix compares the handling properties of all the leading polymer clay brands. Beginners will most likely be more comfortable with a more project-oriented approach, but anyone already bitten by the polymer clay bug will find this an essential idea book. --Amy Handy

5 out of 5 stars All 'Round Book for Beginners.......2007-07-03

This book has more information in it than any book I've found so far on Polymer Clay.

There is enough information on the basics to get a beginner started. How to handle clay, storage, baking, and differences in products.

There is such a variety of techniques and projects that you're sure to find some you're not interested in as well as a LOT that you love.

Most of the other books I've found on Polymer clay specialize on specific uses. This one shows the range of things that are possible, and how to do them.

This will get a beginner started and give you ideas to get started in your own direction.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK FOR BEGINNERS.......2007-04-20

The book is wonderful for a beginner. It tells you the tools you need, talks about how to make beads, miniture furniture and many other projects. It is a very basic book that hits on pretty much everything to help you make beads.

As someone who has worked with polymer clay before purchasing the book, I was pleased with some of the tecniques presented in this book that I had never even thought of or tried. If you are someone who is ready to dive in to using polymer clay, this is an excellent way to get started.

Book Description

Nine master ceramic artists present their personal approaches to sculpting the human figure in a spectacular volume that's both technically illuminating and visually inspirational. The outstanding examples range from representational to abstract, diminutive to heroic. Nan Smith uses a range of mold-making techniques and precise slab construction, while Akio Takamori coil-builds a simplified figure inspired by a Velásquez painting and Christyl Boger creates a lavishly decorated, classically formal figurine. Each featured sculptor discusses the unique attractions and challenges of his or her method, and a series of detailed color photographs follows the artwork as it takes shape. In addition, there's a gallery of contemporary pieces selected by the major contributors. Glen R. Brown, a noted writer on ceramics, provides an insightful, thought-provoking introduction.

5 out of 5 stars The Figure in Clay: Contemporary Sculpting Techniques by Master Artists (A Lark Ceramics Book).......2007-08-16

A rich and exciting collection of wonderful artists and a never ending wealth of inspiration. My favorite book of contemporary ceramic art

5 out of 5 stars terrific technique.......2007-07-20

I have always wanted to do large scale figurative sculpture. There are not many books specifically on this subject. I found this book and said, "Yes, this has exactly what I want to know". I find it a wonderful resource. Vicki Stone-artist

3 out of 5 stars It seems easy!.......2007-05-15

Beatiful pages. It seems easy sculpting. It is not. If you can do it, this book does not really help you, but if you don't, you really feel sorry that you can't. It's good anyway to see how some artists work.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2007-05-07

This book is very inspirational to the figurative artist. Some of the work is truly spectacular, and all of it is interesting. I was wondering if I'd like this book before I purchased it, but I am certainly glad I did now. In particular, the works of Adrian Arleo, and my favorite, Christyl Boger, stand out prominently.

The parts on casting and molding are helpful as well. I have never seen such a book where proporton and detailing of the human figure at this scale are illustrated in a step by step fashion, and from rolled coil, slab, and pinched clay at that. Just the pictures of various works and styles would be inspiring enough, but here you have multiple how-tos. Some of the details are glossed over in places, but you are given enough information to where you'd be able to attempt this yourself with little problem. Stock up on clay though. :) There are plenty of smaller works, and abstract examples abound as well as realism.

This book is one of my art favorites now. I may buy another copy for a library use, and keep this one for studio abuse. While the end result of a lot of this art may be intimidating to the newbie, given the high level of finish and proportion, you do not want to pin your technique on books where the end result shown is not representative of the pinnacle you could achieve. This book allows you to set your sights high, along with telling you how to get there as well. You'll just need some practice (same as myself) Now if only I had a really large kiln. :) Firing the end result, which is an art itself, is not covered other than sculpture prep such as venting, etc.

In short, this book was a surprise find, one I've not found in my local bookstores, but one which should be among the main titles they carry.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Worthwhile Addition.......2007-04-30

I like this book very much for what it is, and that is a showcase of work and methods that are out there. If you are a clay worker who has a little bit of handbuilding experience, here is a book that will expand your horizons. I've seen many of the contributers in magazines like Ceramics Monthly, and they all have unique working methods that are worth examining. Some of the methods are not described in exceptional detail; but they still make you say things like,"Oh, that's how it can be done!" or "Oh, I never thought of working in that manner." If you want specific detailed instructions on things like slip casting or what have you, get a book on it (The Clay Lover's Guide to Mold Making, another Lark book is a fine example). What these artists demonstrate is synthesis --bringing the techniques together to create the whole, a rare quality in instructional art books. Another thing I appreciate about this book is the photo galleries, which include a broad cross section of work. All in all, I feel this is a well rounded survey book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and inspiring.......2007-09-07

As long-time polymer clay enthusiast, I was very excited about this book, and it lived up to expectations! The project information is very complete, with easy to follow instructions and photos, and the examples are inspiring. It may be a little difficult for someone who has never worked in polymer before, but I think the projects would be suitable for someone who has a basic knowledge, as well as more advanced artists. I have never been disappointed in a Lark Publishing book and they came through again!

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Jewelry: Polymer Clay.......2007-07-06

I am new to polymer clay and have bought several books. This is the best. If I had to buy just one book, this would be it. Wonderful instructions and fabulous creations. This book shows just how far you can go with polymer clay, from fun to dramatic. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic book!.......2007-05-11

I have never written a review before but after reading The Art of Jewelry I had to jump online and tell the world just how wonderful it was to have a book that was not to basic and not to advanced. If you have been playing with clay for a year or more this book will help you elevate you work. If you are brand new to polymer clay you might want to start with "The New Clay" by Nan Roche.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, but instructions may not be detailed enough for beginners.......2007-03-25

I love this book and refer to it all the time. Although the instructions are not as detailed as might be desirable for a beginner, there are numerous techniques discussed with enough general instructions provided for the intermediate or advanced polymer artist; many I'd never seen before. The book has really inspired me to try new and previously unknown techniques. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great for more advanced clayers. .......2007-02-13

I agree with the other opinions that this book has beautiful projects and photos, but just lacks detailed instructions. This type of book really needs to have step-by-step photos. If you already know the fundamentals of claying, then you'll follow right along. Beginners should get some experience and then come back to this selection.

3 out of 5 stars excellent resource..........2000-01-02

...merely a tool, which definitley involves work on behalf of the reader. There are no pictures or test tiles to rely on; you have to try them yourself... a refreshing change from the results usually included in glaze books because you have to experiment and come up with your own results. I used the 1970's edition of this book as an undergraduate, which included the original recipes - not revised to exclude toxins - and while the revised edition is informative, it lacks the conversions for the "toxic" ingredients which many of us still use for the stunning results they provide. As a result some of the best recipes have been excluded from the new edition, and unfortunatley, the replacements and substitutions produce nowhere near the results gained from earlier editions. Still a good tool for the potter who enjoys glaze experimentation, but if you can score a copy of an unrevised edition(there are two- and they are out of print), you are sure to be pleased!

1 out of 5 stars very promising , but delivers little ........1999-03-27

Many of these glazes are from other sources , same for clay bodies , but have been altered slightly to be presented anew. No real emphasis on glaze toxicity . Fritting Barium and Lead does not guarantee safety in the finished glazes . It's a case of user be aware . No guidelines for glaze usuage on functional wares or decorative . Is the glaze able stand table use - who knows ? Another in the long line of Artistic Glaze books , Ho Humm.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of details but very few illustrations........1999-01-04

I was disappointed by this book due to the lack of illustrations even if only of test tiles. If the author has tested these formulae I cannot understand why these illustrations were not included, but without them the reader is left having to conduct his own test to determine the effects achievable. If the author has not tested, then the book is little better than the lists of glazes available free on the internet. Either way the reader is left with a lot of work to do.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you could ever want from a glaze book........1998-08-22

This book has everything you could ever want in a glaze book. Includeing every chemical you need for glazes and charts on how much colorants to add in percentages. Every kind of glaze for every cone. I didnt' pay too much attention to the clay makeing part but thats not hard to do.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent compendium of formulas for glazes and clays.......1998-01-17

Chappel provides a complete compendium of formulas for various types of clays from low fire to porcelain. He provides extensive formulas for various types of glazes from low fire to cone 14. The formulas are arranged by type, color and includes speciality glazes such as crystaline glazes. He provides complete instructions for firing. In addition there is a good discussion of materials, substitutions and toxicity.
