4 out of 5 stars good for beginners.......2007-09-16

I bought this book for a class in machine quilting and it's one of the most useful references in my sewing room. A very good hands-on guide to machine quilting!

5 out of 5 stars Great place to start!!.......2007-07-30

I recently took a class taught by Ann Moore (EXCELLENT INSTRUCTOR) who recommended this book for her class. Although this book may not have a lot of pages, it gives a tremendous amount of information. In addition to basic machine quilting techniques, there are tables giving characteristics of threads, needles, batting, and other useful information. The types, uses, and sizes of threads are made very clear and understandable. The book starts with basic exercises and progresses through really advanced techniques used in art quilts. Don't let the 64 pages fool you into thinking there is not a lot of information here. It covers both "straight-line" and free motion quilting. As with any art, practice is needed before one excels, and this book provides exercises so you can build your skills. I have three other machine quilting books, and this is by far the best one for a beginning machine quilter.

5 out of 5 stars great little book.......2007-07-08

I have been looking at many books (purchased some)in hopes of finding a simple book with some really good instructions on quilting, and this book did the job! It may seem thin, but if you need a book that covers all the basics with clear instructions you can't go wrong. Besides the easy to understand instructions, there are pictures, colored photographs of finished quilts, projects for practice, and even charts for thread, batting, and needle choices. Some of the books I purchased(for making art quilts)gave great directions for many things, but didn't really cover enough on quilt stitching.I didn't need another inspirational or color theory book. This book got me going on the sewing machine! I would say that if you need a quilt book that explains how to prepare a quilt for stitching and then actually learn the different types of stitches in an easy to understand way,you shouldn't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars So so..........2007-05-25

Not the best sewing instruction book or the worst.

At only 64 pages, it's more of a pamphlet than a book on machine quilting techniques. That said, I still like this book for it's organization and projects, troubleshooting and encouragement.

I feel like it doesn't really deserve 4 stars, but 3 seems stingy.

5 out of 5 stars Machine Quiting made easy.......2007-01-20

This book was recommended by my quilting class teacher and I find it very easy to understand the directions given

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2007-09-19

If you are a first-time paper piecer, as I am, this is not the book for you.

The book is pretty inside. It gives great ideas on how to change colors around, so the same pattern can look vastly different, just with the rearrangement of or choice of different colors.

It's got patterns. That's good.

But for a first-time paper piercer, who is learning HOW to do it, this is not for you.

First, the title tells me that this is about paper piecing, obviously. So I would expect a review of, at the front of the book, what KIND of paper to use. Go ahead. Look through the book. The whole book. It's not there. Not anywhere. If I'm learning about how to do something, I want all of the items needed to do that project clearly and easily listed, at the beginning of the book, with explanations on what kind do I need, what size if appropriate, where am I most likely to find this item, and so on. That's not in here. If you're taking a class and using this book with the class, and the teacher tells you - that's great. If you pick up this book on your own, or try to review it before even getting to said quilting class - you're going to be in some trouble. I got cold feet, though I went on the class and enjoyed it.

Another big problem for me is that the book does not make clear that when you photocopy the patterns, you really need to photocopy more than one set of an image, if you are going to have more than one of those items in your pattern. For example, if you are using one of the heart templates and plan to have 4 hearts in your quilt, and especially if you are learning how to do this for the first time - you need to make more than one copy of that particular pattern, because first time learners are probably going to have to take out stitches, re-stitch, and the paper eventually tears apart, in spite of multiple pieces of Scotch Tape. :) That's all part of learning, of course, but it would help to de-stress if we knew this upfront in the book.

My biggest concern, though, is that as a beginner, I really want clear, step-by-step instructions on how to do paper-piecing. The book doesn't have it. There are some instructions, but then you are left hanging at what feels like the most crucial moment in a block.

For example, in learning how to do one of the house templates, the book gave me instructions at the front of the book - nowhere near the actual house template itself - for only part of the template. I got to the most difficult part, for a beginner at least, in which I was trying to piece together the window and part of the panel of the house and - no directions. Some black and white images, but I'm a beginner. I need COMPLETE, step-by-step instructions. I want to learn how to do this, and not have to have a class, or if I have a class and use this book, then be able to use this book as a reminder of what I learned in class on those evenings a week or two or a month later, when I'm trying to recall what to do.

Here's what I would recommend: all of the information in this book is good. But it needs to be re-grouped in a more logical way. Explain everyting that needs to be used in order to DO paper piecing, first. Explain what kind of paper to use. Tell us what kind of thread to use. Give some examples. Explain more clearly, in the first chapter, about photocopying the templates; that as beginners, we'll probably need to make several. Many quilt class instructors assign this book and just tell students to go over the book, and "be ready" for the class. You can't just "be ready" for a class only by reading this book. It doesn't give enough information. It makes assumption, big assumptions, on your knowledge.

Re-group the remaining information. For instance, start off with the heart template or an easy pattern. Take it step-by-step. Color pictures. Take it from the very beginning and don't assume that we already know. "Here is your fabric. This is the wrong side of your fabric, see? now place the WRONG SIDE of the fabric against the back of the template like this." Make it simple.

Group all of the heart templates together in the chapter about yes, heart templates.

Then go to more complicated blocks, such as the houses. Boy, you do NOT want to be sitting at home a week after your class, trying to figure out mid-way through a wall hanging sampler, how to teach yourself from this book how to do the house template. Not unless you've got a lot of patience, time, and photocopies of that template. And a really good seam ripper. :)

THEN give us examples and pictures in the back section of the book of different wall hangings and quilts.

This is a pretty book, and hidden in it is some good information. I think if it was rearranged a bit, and things made a little more simple, it would be a fantastic book.

If you are an advanced paper piecer with a lot of experience and only want this for the templates, then this is a good book for you.

5 out of 5 stars A must for quilters.......2006-11-04

If you have wanted to learn to paper piecing, this book will show you how. It's very easy to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Machine Paper Piecing.......2004-01-01

I found this to be a great beginner book. I took a class in paper piecing and used this book many times to cement the procedure in my head.
I highly recommend having this book in your quilting library.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT book for quilting..simply the best!.......1999-06-04

First book I got on paper foundation...and will probably be the best one! Easy to follow instructions, and the BEST patterns! Carol really makes it easy to learn and do this type of quilting.

4 out of 5 stars Good variety of patterns and applications........1998-06-13

I bought this book 15 months or so ago and loved it from the start. What look to be complicated and tricky designs are really straight-forward. There are coloured pages of striking combinations to demonstrate possibilities along with instructions if you want to copy. Otherwise you can have a lot of fun making up your own from the good variety of patterns/settings. I love foundation piecing and Ms Doak's patterns have been straight-forward to sew and pleasing to look at.

5 out of 5 stars Had to buy second copy.......2007-01-04

My mother borrowed this book and still has it. She refers to it regularly. I finally had to buy another copy for myself.
The directions are very easy to follow and the pictures are clear.
Each chapter is a different technique taught by an expert.
Just reading through it gets you excited about trying some of the projects.

    3 out of 5 stars Good guide.......2005-10-12

I bought this book at the same time as I purchased Guide to Machine Quilting. It is well done but less informative as the Guide to Machine Quilting which I refer to quite frequently.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Machine Quilting.......2005-10-06

I loved this book. It was recommended by a friend of mine who has been quilting for years. The book goes step by step into making different kinds of quilts and even gives little projects to help you learn to quilt. This is a perfect beginner book.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Machine Quilting.......2004-09-20

I'm a person who likes to learn things pretty much 'on my own'.
To that end, the book is/was VERY helpful, and I will keep it as a reference.
Also, I was pleasantly surprised with the projects (I hadn't realized that there were projects). They are explained understandably and in detail.
    I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Solid teaching book.......2003-07-23

This book will give you allot of ideas and more importantly a method to build those skills. It has the edge over Hargrave's book in that it is a solid tutorial; her's really is an advanced book. That said it is colourful and bright but the pages are rather busy with all these little 'notes'. Each section is done by the 'expert' of that type of quilting and in some cases can stand alone as there is a small box at the bottom giving getting started hints "Let's get started" :-)
It follows in the beginning the same format, chapter for chapter, of the Hargrave book, the difference being this is more aimed for quilters brushing up on their work (re-learning) or beginners.
A solid way to learn how to machine quilt and what's needed, batting choices included.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful but POORLY BOUND.......2006-11-10

I find this book to be a very good "how to" reference. It's one you should read through after you've been stitching awhile too - to pick up those tidbits you're not doing in your own sewing. Unfortunately, it's bound with stitching and glue (I think) and the paper eventually gets cut through on a page that is left open. I had the book open for a few days on my cutting area - I was doing binding and there is a good explanation of ending it. The binding pages simple fell out - they were "cut". Now I will have to see if I can get the book "drilled" with 3 holes and put it into a binder. That has never happened to me before, so I can only think that the publisher choose a poor binding method.

    5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2006-07-29

This is a must have for my quilting/sewing reference library. I am new to rotary cutting, and this book really helped.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST quilting book!.......2004-04-20

I have purchased numerous quilting books and this one is the absolute BEST! If you are a new quilter, this book is for you and if you are an experienced quilter, this book is for you too! It has great instructions, wonderful pictures to show you how to sew it and 12 projects to do. The project names are "Floating Stars", "Pine Tree Delight", "Campbell House", "Monkey Wrench Times 2", "Indian Puzzle", "Ferris Wheel Flowers", "Dancing Star Table Runner", "Square within a Square Miniature", "Country Potpourri", "A Celebration of Cats", "Black Star Eruption" and "Stars at an Angle". If you can afford only a few books, buy this one. It is that good.

5 out of 5 stars Exemplary for ALL instruction books!.......2004-03-31

This is the clearest instruction book of ANY kind I have come across. You can tell the author is a real pro, because she gives excellent advice on all aspects of putting a quilt together. It is easy to read, with many quick-find tips on every page, and is loaded with very clear and useful how-to illustrations. The book inspires me to want to make beautiful quilts!

Before I bought this book, I did not realize that (a) you must know how to sew and (b) you must own a sewing machine before you can make a fabric bowl. I was extremely disappointed when I eagerly opened the book to find that sewing skills and a sewing machine are absolutely required - you cannot make a bowl without having both. I would never have purchased this book if the description had made it clear that sewing skills and a sewing machine are required. I did return this book.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2004-08-30

This book is comprehensive. Lists everything you need and the instructions are great. If you are new to sewing like I am, take it slow and read the instructions carefully. Re-read if necessary. My bowls are improving with each new bowl I make.

Those hard to buy for people will be easier with this gift idea.
    Have fun.

If you want a machine quilting book to help you in making quilts ---- I would recommend you look elsewhere. This book was a total waste of time and money for me. There is only 1 quilt in it -- constructed of nothing more than large blocks and not even machine quilted, which is what I was looking for.

This book has some lovely ideas for the beginner as well as the seasoned quilter. Directions are beautifully illustrated and easy to follow. I recommend it for you quilting library.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-04-13

This book is both for the beginner and the advanced. It explains the basic techniques, how to transfer patterns, which materials to use. And then it brings various projects, each with a list of materials and tools, photos of the final product, patterns and designs. The book concludes with about 100 patterns/designs you can use, very clearly illustrated. A wonderful book.

    5 out of 5 stars A very inspirational book..........2003-05-21

The techniques and sample patterns are very inspiring especially for sewists that are becoming bored with plain fabrics. If you don't know how to stitch a straight line, this book will help in that area as well as teaching you a multitude of stitching design/styles that one can use on garments and home deco.
Very compatible with Marcy Tilton's patterns particularly, the one she released in 2003.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book!.......2000-11-14

I recently took Mary's beginner Sashiko one-day class and it was the best class I have taken and I've taken a good deal. This book thoroughly explains the process we learned in class. This is such an easy way to do exquisite Sashiko designs. This is not free-sytle quilting. You just stitch along the lines. You will be amazed at the product! It helps if your machine has a needle down feature. The book shows illustrations of the finished projects, which she brought to class. I highly recommend this book to those who have a ruler, compass, and graph paper, and Sulky ink transfer pens, and are willing to prepare the paper sheets for fabric design transfer. Her method is easy and precise. This is by far, my most valued book. I am a quilter and have quite an extensive library. You will love this book and the history behind the designs. The designs range from beginner to advanced and there are many to choose from!

4 out of 5 stars An informative introduction to Sashiko.......2000-08-24

This book is very thorough about the history, traditions, and designs of the art of sashiko. I learned much more than I expected from a design book--I expected just a small introduction to the art and then a few projects and designs to begin with. There is much, much more! The author also shows how to put together designs of your own so there are no limits to where you can go with the knowledge from the book. However, the drawings are small and will have to be enlarged to be useful--also I wish there was at least a small section about sashiko by hand--but the title says it all--Machine Embroidery. I'll be trying it out tomorrow.
