Customer Reviews:
Not for hand piecers.......2007-09-18
Lovely complex quilts, but not for hand piecers like me. I found that the patches were too small and the amount of templates need to be made too many.
Difficult, but worth it!.......2007-05-22
I'll agree that this book takes careful reading, but I think it's worth the effort. The cutting templates are only approximations and easy to make and they save so much cutting time! Best of all, foundations make the patterns easy to sew! I'm nearly finished with one quilt and am planning the next as a graduation gift. My husband is so impressed with what I've done. Since I never went to Italy, I even like the "tourist" photos. I think it's nice to see the actual floors that inspired these designs. I wish there were more books with new ideas like Bella Bella Quilts. And, I agree with another reviewer that the author is incredibly helpful, and very quick to answer her emails.
Woo Hoo!.......2007-05-09
I am starting my second quilt in this book, and I LOVE the designs. I found, for my next project, I wanted to alter the design a bit. So I contacted the author via email. She is extraordinarily helpful and responded to my email very quickly. One look inside this book, and you'll want to do them all.
Disappointing.......2007-02-04
I am a quilter who has traveled in Italy, where we have family, and I am interested in art history, which was my college major. So naturally, the enticements for _Bella Bella Quilts_ by Norah McMeeking made me drool.
"Stunning Designs from Italian Mosaics"
"Photos of Italy and its architecture - a great coffee table book!"
"If like me, you are inspired by architectural photography, then you too will think this book 'bella bella'."
I was seriously disappointed when I received my copy in the mail. While the quilt photos are good quality and well-labeled, the photos of Italy are merely tourist quality. Even worse, they are not only unlabeled, but also appear throughout the book without comment or connection to what else is on the page. I can't imagine why anyone would consider poorly lit, unlabeled photos appropriate to a "coffee table book" or what about a book which uses such photos without respect to content to be "inspiring." I have not been inspired to use any of the patterns.
But I do like to learn from other quilters so am reading the book carefully. And having just struggled to decipher "Sewing a Circle Band into a Square" (pp. 16-17), I had to spout my two-cents' worth. In short, argh and double argh!
The directions are inadequately illustrated and poorly related to the text and photographs.
Sewing directions are unnecessarily complicated. E.g., "Anchor stitches to about 1½" shy of where the corner meets the curved band at each end of the partial seam" is clear as mud. "Sew from A to B" would have been much easier, provided an A and B were provided on the illustrations.
The text uses terms inconsistently and without regard to the labels on the drawings. E.g., the instructions refer to "circle bands" while the drawing only shows a "curved band"; the instructions refer to the "corner piece" which isn't labeled on the drawing; the term "corner unit" is used to refer both to the corner piece attached to the straight bands and to the corner piece attached to the straight bands and to the curved band.
The in-progress photographs are difficult to decipher, not only because they use poorly contrasted fabrics and thread colors, but also because the finished example shown is made from entirely different fabrics!
I Dream of Finding Quilt Books like Bella Bella Quilts.......2007-01-10
The quilts featured in this book are amazing. They look intimidating and complicated to construct, but they are not difficult to make. An intermediate quilter familiar with paper piecing and sewing curved seams could make any of the Bella Bella mosaic quilts. I made the Carnevale quilt featured on page forty-eight. It's now one of my favorite quilts. It is stunning and impresses everyone who sees it (if they only knew how easy it was to piece together!).
There was a lot of prep work involved. Lots of fabric cutting and preparing paper foundations and templates, nothing unusual. After that, it was like any other piecing project. Just sew in numerical order then press and trim. And so on. You don't need to know anything about geometry. Just be sure your templates and foundations are absolutely accurate when you make them and your quilt will lie flat.
This book is awesome. In addition to Carnevale, I plan to make other Bella Bella quilts.
*UPDATE*: I am now tackling Venice Rose on page 42. Gorgeous, gorgeous quilt. I do wish the author would have included templates for the individual fabric pieces that make up this quilt. Though it does contain pullout foundations for the projects, templates for individual fabric pieces are not in the book (nor in the foundations that are sold separately). It has taken me over three hours of tracing, adding half an inch seam allowance to all sides of each piece, and cutting templates for thirty-six pieces. If the author writes another book, and I hope she does, she should consider including pre-measured templates for individual fabric pieces. Quilters really appreciate them, trust me!
After making Carnevale, I purchased the paper foundations that accompany the book. WOW! I wish I had bought them before making my first Bella Bella quilt. I highly recommend them. They'll save me hours of work on this and future projects.

Book Description
America and Its Peoples, Fourth Edition presents American history in an exciting way, with a spirited narrative, vivid character sketches, and colorful anecdotes. The book highlights the rich ethnic diversity of the American people. Social history-with an emphasis on sports, leisure, and popular culture-is integrated with more traditional coverage of military history, politics, and diplomacy.
MARKET Appropriate for anyone with an interest in American history.
Customer Reviews:
What a waste..........2007-03-04
This text is the worst I've ever read. The narrative is dull, the language antiquated. Worst of all, it's so poorly organized it leaves a student utterly frustrated and confused of dates and events. There are over twenty pages in between when it mentions the Missouri Compromise and who actually engineered it. If you're looking for a good history text this is not it. If you've signed up for a history course that requires this text as its primary reference source, I'd recommend dropping it.
Excellent service, Fast delivery........2002-10-18
I received my book very fast and the book is in good condition as described.

Customer Reviews:
Must have book.......2007-01-07
Marlene, aside from being a good friend, a wonderful painter, and a beautiful woman, is an inspiration. Buy this book-- making things from broken china is calming, and fun.
Don't buy this book for inspiration..........2004-04-29
I wish I hadn't spent the money on this book. While it does give you the basics of doing mosaics, there's maybe 6 pages of it. If you've ever done any tile work, then its useless. The rest of the book is centered on doing specific projects. Frankly, the example pieces in the book were downright ugly. Most of them looked like they were just a smashed plate re-assembled. There's really no color or design patterns. The rest had doll heads all over them, which I found pretty creepy. If you're a beginner, this might give you the basics but there should be better books out there. If you're looking for inspiration, there HAVE to be better books out there than this one.
Meh.......2003-06-12
This book has a lot of finished pieces that I found to be almost ugly. The techniques as instructed are not as in depth as I have seen in other books. I recommend you purchase to accompany another mosaic book, but I would not make it my primary instructional book.
Crafty Saturdays will never be the same!.......2002-01-03
I love the challenge of creative household projects and bounce back and forth between several different ones, but by far, mosaic tiling is my favorite! I used this book for the ideas & know how. It has great pictures and well thought ideas I had never thought of. I tiled my porch walk way with a wonderful mosaic tile design & I receive complement after complement (even from the mailman!). Everyone wants to know who did it!
Step aside Martha Stewart!.......2000-12-10
Marlene Marshall is a gifted artist and writer. From her book, one can easily learn the beginning steps on the road to making unique pieces of art. Her style is straight forward and holds the reader's hand through the process without telling them how to be creative. The photos are wonderful and give the reader many ideas. Thanks to Marlene's book, I decided to tile a exposed heating duct in my dining room and it came out fantastic! It is often the subject of many dinner conversations with friends. This is truely a great gift for any craft person or budding artist. I can't wait for her next book!

Book Description
Immigration policy has always been and continues to be a subject of intense political and public debate. This book examines the ideas, interests, institutions, and rhetoric that have shaped Canada's immigration history.
Beginning their study in the pre-Confederation period, the authors tell of the dramatic transformations that have characterized our attitudes towards immigrants. While, at first, few obstacles were placed in the way of newcomers to Canada, the turn of the century brought policies of increasing selectivity. The massive deportations of the First World War and Depression eras were exceeded in harshness only by the tactics implemented during the Second World War, when nearly all of the Japanese-Canadian population was incarcerated and when Jewish refugees fleeing from mass extermination abroad were turned away from our shores.
Bringing us up to date with an analysis of the more expansionary policies of the 1990s, the authors clarify the central issues and attitudes underlying each phase and juncture of policy decision-making. Their thoughtful study reveals a set of core normative and ethical values that have been fundamental in the making of the Canadian mosaic.

Adirondack Furniture and the Rustic Tradition

Book Description
Once confined to backwoods cabins and hunting lodges, rustic furniture is being recognized today for its primitive ingenuity and beauty. Craftspeople around the country are recapturing the techniques and visions of earlier craftsmen who recognized the beauty of natural materials and functionality of common-sense design. They merged the two in styles of furniture that were perfectly suited to their rugged environments. Now these wonderful rustic creations are finding their way into some of the finest homes and most elegant galleries. Larry Hawkins specializes in twig mosaic furniture. Twig mosaic utilizes the great variety of color and texture in the bark of twigs and trees to create wonderful patterns on the surfaces of furniture. The results are fantastic pieces of furniture, destined to take a predominant place in any room setting. Larry takes the reader/craftsman step-by-step through the process of creating a tiered clock. The techniques learned along the way can be applied to any number of furniture forms, many of which are shown in the gallery. Every step is illustrated with a full color photograph and a precise description of the processes involved., 240 color photos, 8 1/2" x 11"
