5 out of 5 stars LOVE this Cookbook!.......2007-10-07

I got this book for my step-daughter (15) I was worried it would be too "little kid like" but is ISN'T! I had the 1970/80's version, from my childhood and remembered really liking it. It prompted me to buy this one in the hopes I would like the revamped version and it's AWESOME! Fun food to make, super easy. I'm thinking about buying another one and putting it aside for my daughter who is 3. I'd say kids 8 and up would easily be able to follow this with some adult direction.

5 out of 5 stars Junior Cookbook.......2007-04-12

5 out of 5 stars Fun for kids and adults, easy to follow,, adorable artwork .......2007-02-19

I bought this cookbook with my 7 year old daughter in mind, but my 10, 14 and 16 year old kids love it too! The recipes are easy-to-follow, the artwork is adorable, colorful, and inviting. I have a lot of cookbooks on my shelf, but this one is by far the most popular. It has encouraged the kids to be in the kitchen, following easy-to-read recipes and make some terrific tasting foods. I highly recommend this for kids of all ages, and adults alike!

5 out of 5 stars Covers it all!.......2007-10-09

This is a must-have book. It will provide you with everything you need: useful, simple recipes that kids will actually eat, simple nutritional information, organizational tips, and tips and tricks for making the meal fun and getting your kids to eat the food you'd like them to eat. Honestly, this book is so practical. It's been the most bang I've gotten for a buck in a long time!

1 out of 5 stars Not very novel, creative, or different.......2007-09-01

I got better ideas from parenting magazines. These were not very novel, creative, or healthy. It was also very thin. It was just a bunch of different kinds of sandwiches and soups. I was looking for something to break out of the rut, and this was not it. If the ONLY thing you can think of is PB&J, then you might get something out of it, but for those of us who can think of at least a little more variety, don't waste your money. I think the people who rated this multiple stars must be trying to boost the product's rating so they can sell theirs back, lol. :)

3 out of 5 stars Not as healthy as I had hoped.......2007-06-01

"Healthy" is a somewhat relative term. The homemade recipes inside this book are certainly healthier than processed junk food, but I don't consider ingredients like chow mein noodles, american cheese or mini marshmallows to be "healthy". The usual topics found in healthy cooking books like the importance of whole grains, the pitfalls of trans fats or the importance of using organic produce, are pretty much absent from "Brown Bag Success". However, in terms of making lunches kids will like, eat and not trade, the book is filled with ideas. If you have a child who really will not eat their homemade lunch, you are bound to find some ideas in here that will help.

As another reviewer already noted, the recipes are heavy on peanut butter. I would say about one third of the recipes are peanut butter based. So if you have a child who loves PBJ, and you just can't make another one, then this book might just be for you. My daughter really doesn't like PBJ anymore, so they aren't much help to me.

On the other hand, some of the non peanut butter recipes look good enough to eat myself. The "Apple-Cinnamon Sandwich" puts a cream cheese-apple-walnut-celery spread between slices of raisin bread. The "Mini Drumsticks" are chicken wings soaked in an asian marinade and then baked. The chicken tabouleh salad and sweet coleslaw look good as well (But I'm not sure my daughter would so much as touch them. She dislikes most salad.) The baked goods all look good as well.

All in all I just don't feel most of these recipes are healthy enough for my family. My daughter has a bit of a weight problem, so I have to be really careful with what she eats. On the other hand the ideas for making a packed lunch more appealing to children are helpful and some of the recipes look tasty.

4 out of 5 stars A great addition to my lunch repertoire........2007-05-09

This cookbook is geared more for kids. However, I was stuck in a lunch rut, and turned to this cookbook for help. It is wonderful. All of the recipes are easy with a small amount of ingredients. It really has added a lot of spice to my lunch repertoire.

Try the Peanut butter chocolate chip muffins. They are to die for.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas!.......2006-08-31

I have been brown bagging lunches for years and thought I had heard it all but I am always open to new idea and this book had them. My kids and I all went through it together and tried each kid's picks. It was fun and it has some really good ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, toddler recipes with some taste!.......2007-10-09

I have a 2 yr. old, and he is like his Mom and Dad. He likes food that has some taste, he even will eat food with a little spice in it. These recipes are good for him and for us too, and they fill you up, even a hungry husband.

5 out of 5 stars First time Mommy.......2007-08-13

I am 20 years old and a first time mother. I don't know how to cook, but as soon as i opened this book, I fell in love with it, every dish on this books looks very tasty, and even i was wondering how good these foods must taste.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......2007-07-14

We love this book and I often make the recipes in large quantities for the whole family. IMO the seasoning was bland so I always bump it up a bit, but I've been feeding my triplets heavily seasoned food from from day one (via breastmilk). They won't eat jarred food, but LOVE the Moroccan Lamb with some extra cumin and added cinnamon.

My only complaints would be the recommending of solid foods by age rather than a child's readiness (teeth, pincher grasp, sitting up), the feeding of purees (please research the benefits of self-feeding!) and the small bit of translation involved because the book is written by a Brit.

I highly recommend this book and have added it to my list of gifts for new moms.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-05-18

The recipes are definitely not quick and easy and they are strange combinations of foods that I question if I'd even eat. This was a BIG disappointment. Wish I could've returned it.

1 out of 5 stars The Big Book of Recipies for Babies, Toddlers & Children.......2007-05-13

Not only were the recipies far from user friendly, I do not know of many babies or toddlers who would enjoy them. I was hoping to find some basic recipies but these were for a more developed palate than that of a child.

"Consider, young Jedi: Why bake a plain old cookie when you can bake a super-Chewie Wookiee Cookie?" So begins the delightful Star Wars Cookbook. Aimed at young cooks, but fun for all ages, the cookbook provides recipes for treats such as Princess Leia Danish Dos, Twin Sun Toast, Tusken Raider Taters, Sandtrooper Sandies, and the Amazon.com house favorite, Boba Fett-uccine. (What better way to get young Jedi knights to eat their broccoli?) Author Robin Davis's directions are extremely thorough and safety oriented (as she notes, "the calm and perceptive mind of a Jedi warrior will enable you to prevent most mishaps in the kitchen"), and perfect for kids who are new to cooking. The spiral-bound pages are lightly plasticoated, so if you spill some milk while concocting C-3PO Pancakes, it's easily wiped off. The highlights of the book are Frankie Frankeny's terrific photographs of Star Wars action figures posing with the food--R2-D2 encounters giant frozen R2-D2 Treats that look remarkably similar to him, while Darth Vader raises his fist at Bossk the bounty hunter atop a wall of Bossk Brownies as Darth's henchmen look on. And who could resist a shot of Jabba Jiggle? There's Jabba the Hutt positioned on a pile of oozing lime Jell-O®. Whether you're a Star Wars fan or just looking for a way to get the kids to feel the Force in the kitchen, The Star Wars Cookbook is great fun, and tasty, too! --Rebecca A. Staffel

Book Description

Boba Fett-Uccine and Princess Leia Danish Dos are just the beginning when the Force is with you in the kitchen. Wookiee Cookies is your invitation to fine culinary experiences in the Star Wars frame of mind. From C-3PO Pancakes to Jedi Juice Bars, this intergalactic Star Wars cookbook features healthy snacks, delicious dishes, sweet treats, and easy main courses no Rebel can resist. With hilarious photos and safety tips for cooking on Earth as well as in most space stations, Wookiee Cookies even includes a sheet of shiny Star Wars stickers. Age is no issue when it comes to Star Wars cuisine-kids as well as adults will have a great time with this book. Whether you drove to your first Star Wars flick or just had your fifth birthday, there's no reason you can't whip up some Crazy Cantina Chili at near light speed.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Wookie cookies.......2007-10-02

May be a fun novelty for anyone under 10. was expecting a bit more from this book.

4 out of 5 stars Force Feeding.......2006-06-03

I gotta admit, when I picked this book up to review, it was right after I read another Chronicle Book called Stir Squirt Sizzle that I thought was the lamest, the absolute most mundane and probably worst kid's cookbook in existence, so I was skeptical.

But actually, this little spiral-bound coated pages number is quite cute with some really creative selections. There's breakfast, (I liked the twin sun toast, with two sunny-side up eggs put in a thick piece of toast), Beverages (a Yoda Soda--too cute!), Snacks and Sides, (Ewok Eats), Main Courses (Boba Fett-uccine) and Desserts.

This isn't a book that I would buy if I were looking to cook with my kids because I have a nine-year-old girl and a two year old boy. But if you have a Star Wars fan/finiky eater, then this is the book for you. It is also a good book to have if you are planning a Star Wars birthday party with its myraid of Star Wars-themed desserts.

The suppers in this book number a total of seven, and they are pretty standard fare, so this book is more about fun than real family meals. However, it is a great addition to your kitchen bookshelf if you are looking to inject a bit of fun into a Star War's fan's life. I mean, who can resist a book with Wookie Cookies?

For other family cookbooks, see my other reviews. I highly recommend several pantry friendly selections that will save you time, money, and effort.

5 out of 5 stars silly, but fun and tasty!.......2006-03-20

I gave this cookbook to my young son the Star Wars freak as a birthday gift. I really wasn't expecting much from it, other than generating a few chuckles at the Star Wars birthday bash. Several months down the road, I am proud to report that we have tried a half dozen of the Wookiee Cookies recipes. My picky eater now enjoys Twin Sun Toast for breakfast, and we've had great success with Princess Leia Danish Dos. The "Leias" are my personal favorite! They are made with pizza dough and so are a bit heavier than most danish, but are nevertheless delicious and easy to make! Most of the recipes are typical foods given a SW name, but they are all kid friendly and simple to prepare and serve. My children have been asking to help in the kitchen much more often since this book came into our home! The book includes a few of each category: breakfast, beverages, snacks and sides, main courses, and desserts.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Kids!!.......2006-03-03

My kids are huge Star Wars fans & they love to cook. This was perfect for them!! The instructions are easy to follow & many of the recipes can be made by them alone (with me close by, of course.) By doing it on their own & with Star Wars as the theme, they tried things they wouldn't have before & they loved it!! There has only been one thing they haven't liked (Mos Eisley Morsels--they were very dry), but the Bossk Brownies, Wookie Cookies & Greedo Burrito were the best to them. It was definately worth the money!!! We have only had it a few weeks & we've tried most of it & keep going back!! Can't say enough good about it!!

5 out of 5 stars This is a really good cookbook.......2005-12-12

This is a great book!! When I got it, my mom was sick, but we made her Wookie Cookies and she felt better almost immediately!! (Maybe she just thought we were doing something special and felt gratitude). I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make some quick snacks or a full course meal. I really like this book.

3 out of 5 stars Not your grandma's cupcakes...though you might wish they were........2007-05-24

After buying Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World: 75 Dairy-Free Recipes for Cupcakes that Rule, I was inspired and eager to try some new recipes (I'm not vegan, after all!). I was very disappointed with this book; it's very light on recipes, and heavy on elaborate, time-consuming decorations that typically involve ingredients that will either be hard to find in your local grocery stores (so you'll need to buy them through the mail), or are inconvenient (such as all-green Fruit Roll-ups). The emphasis is on using basic cake recipes and dressing them up with lots on processed candies and artificially colored and flavored additions; the resulting combination is a cupcake that looks too good to eat, and tastes like an odd mishmash of the various decorative components used when you do. In spite of the title, this is really not a recipe book, but is more of a funky home-decorator's guide to cupcakes.

Some of these cupcakes are absolutely gorgeous; others seem rather random, or as though the author was running out of ideas in the end (several pages devoted to clock-face cupcakes?). While they may be "kid-friendly" to eat, most will not be kid-friendly to make, given the precision necessary to recreate the elaborate designs. You're also going to need some new tips for your pastry bag to frost a lot of these. A big problem that I had with this book is that the designs are so elaborate that it quickly becomes impractical to make more than a few of them; if you've got a bake sale coming up, or need to make a large batch for a potluck, many of these recipes won't be practical.

Many other reviewers seem to have loved this book, but I found it to be a bit of a disappointment. The author is clearly a very creative person, and I will certainly be trying some of the "recipes" as I expand my cupcake resume'. However, the emphasis on image over flavor and the time-consuming nature of a lot of these will probably keep the book on the shelf more often than on my counter-top. Definitely give this one a test-drive at your local library first.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2007-01-04

I could have made the designs by looking at the pictures.
The print is small, not even standard size type.
Then they do things like green type on green pages.VERY hard to read.

4 out of 5 stars Adorable Pics, but Slightly Too Elaborate.......2006-08-21

Excellent cupcake recipes if you bake the simple options, however some of them are SO inventive, I've not heard of many of the ingredients! I'd consider myself somewhat of a novice and perhaps that's why.

Still, the book is ALWAYS mounted in a book holder in my kitchen and turned to different pages every week, displaying the sweet and fun photographs. I'd recommend it just for the pictures alone. Clare Crespo is a masterful baker, indeed. And her photographer did the little cakes quite a lot of justice.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Kid friendly cupcakes.......2006-06-29

5 out of 5 stars 5 Star fun and food.......2007-02-18

My 5 year old son may already be a bigger Star Wars fan than myself. He has always enjoyed helping cook as well and these cookbooks couldn't be better for him. Not only do they make it fun with the Star Wars theme but the recipes are also quite good and easy to make. My son also really enjoys just looking at the pictures.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Christmas present!.......2005-02-07

I LOVE this book! As I stated before, I got this for Christmas after taking up an interest in Star Wars, especially Episode I. And that was it. It started with some "Booma Breakfast Tarts" and I've been cooking ever since. I love the pictures of the action figures with the food. They really make you want to try the recipes. I've had it for two months and have made 11 recipes from it so far. Thursday is usually "Forceful Frittata Day". "Amidala Challah" was a hit at a bake sale I helped with. The "Darth Double Dogs" I made for my friends went over well (though they kept trying to fight with them at the table!) I just made some "Panakacakes". (A good thing is, if you want to make some of the things for a non-Star Wars related event, most of the recipes are just regular things with names like "Qui-Gon Jinn-ger Snaps" and "Anakin's Apple Crisp". No one will know if you don't tell them!) Even if you don't try the recipes, it's a fun book to just LOOK at.

I heavily reccomend this book to Star Wars Episode I fans with a mild interest in cooking. Also reccomended heavily are the "Wookiee Cookies" book and the "Party Book".

4 out of 5 stars Good, but Wookiee Cookiees was better.......2004-02-24

Star Wars Cookbook was the best cookbook in the world. It hand strange recipes like Tusken Raider Taters and Twin Sun Toasties, but also fancy food like Han-Burgers, Greedo`s Burritos, Princess Leia Danish Dos, Jedi Juice Pops and the king recipe, Wookiee Cookiees.

I got this cookbook before Wookiee Cookiees in Christmas 2003. It was quite nice'. It featured funny names like Sith Speeder Sunrise, Handmaiden Hash Browns and Boss Nass Broccoli. The photos are amusing as in Wookiee Cookiees: Watto over few Watto Melon Cubes and Gungans fighting from Booma Breakfast Tarts. The pages are wipe clean, so Amidala Challah does not damage on it.

I love Sith Slush, so I had to make it on summer with my father.
Good, but Star Wars Cookbook 1 was better.

5 out of 5 stars Another must buy for the true Star Wars fan........2004-01-19

This book is the following volume to the Star Wars Cookbook: Wookie Cookies and Other Galactic Recipes and like its predecessor it has the same beautifully illustrated, spiral-bound, hardcover format. It is another must buy for serious Star Wars fans that want to keep adding delicious Star Wars themed recipes to their lives and want to have fun while preparing their meals.
The book is divided into five sections for easy reference: Breakfasts, Snacks and Sides, Main Courses, Desserts and Treats, and Drinks. Each Star Wars themed recipe is fully and clearly explained (ingredient measurements and preparation instructions) for easy understanding. The book's introduction contains practical advice on cooking safety and includes a guide of the cooking tools you'll need. As an added bonus, the pages of the book are laminated for easy, stain-free cleaning.
You will love all the recipes, and will probably recreate, the wonderfully photographed serving suggestions given in the book like the Booma Breakfast Tarts, the Pit Droid Pizza, and the Qui-Gon Jinn-ger Snaps which are decorated with the action figures of known characters of the Star Wars Episode I movie. Other recipes' presentations feature enjoyable visual puns like the Boss Nass Broccoli, the Protocol Droid Pasta and the Darth Maul Dip (which even includes a plastic template for decoration). Some are even very basic, but really tasty, recipes that have been given clever Star Wars-sounding names like Darth Malt, Panakacakes and Pickle Jar Jar.
Buy this book, and share the joy of cooking and your love of everything Star Wars with kids and adults, family and friends. And May The Force Be With You.
I would also recommend buying the Star Wars Cookbook and The Star Wars Party Book along with this one as they all make a complete, excellent and fun idea source book for everyday cooking and Star Wars themed parties.

Lots of people know the nursery rhyme, "Hey Diddle Diddle," but has anyone ever thought about what happens each night after it's read? The dish runs away with the spoon, and, presumably, they come back later, otherwise the rhyme couldn't go on without them. But one night, when the dish and spoon take off, they simply don't return! The fiddle-playing cat, laughing dog (who turns out to be quite a grump when he's not playing his part), and the sleepy, moon-hopping cow set out to search for their missing friends. Along the way they encounter Little Boy Blue, the spider from "Little Miss Muffet," Humpty Dumpty's repairman, and a big bad wolf. But will they catch up with the dish and the spoon before the next reading? And can all of them dodge the dangers of an after-hours, fairy-tale world?

Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel pick up where the nursery rhyme leaves off in this witty, entertaining romp. Young readers will "laugh to see such sport," as characters from fairy tales and Mother Goose mingle, make puns, and occasionally join forces to find the wandering tableware. The hilarious facial expressions and lively scenes by Janet Stevens invite readers to stay a while on each page. Stevens is the author and illustrator of the Caldecott Honor Book Tops and Bottoms. She and her sister-collaborator have previously teamed up on Cook-a-Doodle-Doo!, Shoe Town, and Tumbleweed Stew. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Every night the rhyme gets read. Every night Dish and Spoon run away. And every night they return--until tonight!
Where can Dish and Spoon be? The rhyme can't go on without them, so Cat, Cow, and Dog set out to search for their missing friends. But where to start? Should they go north? East? Northeast? They'll just have to read Fork's map, ask directions, and try not to get lost in Little Boy Blue's haystack or under Miss Muffet's tuffet or in Big Bad Wolf's kitchen--"FEE, FI, FO . . ." Oh no. Could that be the giant?

5 out of 5 stars One of the best children's books .......2007-07-15

This is one of the best children's books I have ever read! The author does a great job of using multiple nursery rhymes and the book has some great play on words. This is a must-have in our library and I have also given it as presents to family members and teachers.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-04-14

We LOVE this book! It is such a fun story, however, it goes beyond fun. It's has wonderful educational value. It has a map that my child loves to use while reading the book. She's learned to navigate the map on her own. It's wonderful. She sees all of the little details (like the sheep costume hanging in the Big Bad Wolf's house..."wolf in sheep's clothing"). We got it at the library & renewed it 2 times. That means it's getting purchased now! I don't want to deprive other children of reading this book!

5 out of 5 stars Rhyme and Pun-ishment: And the DISH Ran Away with the SPOON.......2007-03-11

Colourful characters, corny humour and a considerable amount of complaining have made this collision of nursery rhymes a favourite adventure at our house.

5 out of 5 stars This book ran away with me........2006-11-10

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book. My kids giggled through the whole thing and asked me to read it over and over again. It's a great book for any age child. The younger kids can relate to the nursery rhyme connections and the older ones get some of the subtle humor.

5 out of 5 stars * Anthropomorphic Dish, Spoon, THE WHOLE NINE YARDS ! *.......2006-06-20

Hey, diddle, diddle: What a 'Tall Tale' this is !

In southern Indiana we have been celebrating such stories at a 3rd Annual TELL-OFF. The Stevens' sisters would fit right in, along with their brother Jack (GREAT PORTRAIT, that!) who plays the role of "fixer-upper" when the crazed DISH cracks up.

Puns and "literary" allusions make this an entertaining read-aloud for adults who will doubtless 'catch on' to more than their young listeners.

The authors embroider the original Mother Goose rhyme & the story moves briskly - - halting along the way while its sleepy characters consider their next moves in looking for the missing DISH & SPOON. Janet Stevens has provided wonderful facial expressions for her characters, PLUS athletic bods! Amusing and colorful (Reviewer mcHAIKU is envious of the FORK's Hawaiian shirt), the characters sure sound like "down home folks" don't they? And we look forward to Stevens & Crummels' next collaboration.

i bought this cookbook for my son (who is 6yrs old) last month as a gift.we both love it as its step-by-step instruction are so easy to follow and the fact that the book are loaded with colorful vegetables makes it so yummy to eat without having to "hide" them.its a keepsake!

5 out of 5 stars Kids Cookbook.......2007-05-24

This book is wonderfully illustrated and explains things well for children. The recipes are great too!

5 out of 5 stars absolutely perfect!.......2007-04-01

I was looking through quite a few books before settleing on this one. For my two boys I knew I needed pictures at least of the dish and a clear discription. I also found that other recipe books were packed with treats and snacks what I really didn't want nor need.
There is a list of ingredients (which makes it easy to check if you have everything) and a list of tools
The recipe is then divided into steps , and again subdivided for easy reading. There is a photograph of pretty much every other step that depicts other children cooking the dish at those very steps. At the end there are suggestions for easy variations which is awesome because some kids just might like different ingredients and it stretches the 25 recipes to quite a few more.
The recipes are healthy, basic but with a great variety. So there should be something for everyone. Great buy! Great book! Definately a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Stuff!.......2007-07-28

This book is excellently written for girls who are entering puberty. It tackles tough topics in a way that girls can really connect with. It is right on with keeping God in the right place in the big picture.

5 out of 5 stars I give it as a gift all the time.......2006-04-02

I wish I had a manual like this at that age! This is great for the preteen and teenage girl.

1 out of 5 stars I would never give this book to a Christian teen!.......2005-02-08

This book advocates the very things that Christian parents should be teaching against. Dating, flirting, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good and Comprehensive.......2004-12-29

There's a sea of girl's books out there, and I'm determined to weed through each. Katie Meier's book has a long title, and surprisingly covers a lot - spirituality, body image, peer pressure, and more. Very similar to most non-fiction girl's books, Meier gives the advice in a big sister way. What separates this book from others? It actually goes into scripture and is not afraid to be frank about religion, as well. That in itself, unlike a lot of girl's non-fiction books which shy away from one of the most important aspect in a girl's life (their emotional and spiritual side), makes this book true to itself and 5 stars. Other girls books that do not shy away from being true - the Gifted Girls Series and the Gutsy Girls books.

5 out of 5 stars A Girl's Guide To Life : The Real Dish on Growing Up, Being .......2004-07-30

This book is a must read for preteens and teen girls everywhere! IT is written in a fun to read style in the authors voice which makes it so easy to relate to and understand. Not only does this book offer a step by step guide through the tough questions from periods to boyfriends, it helps you through the silly and painful parts of being a girl in her teens. And,if you need answers to questions about ANYTHING you can't ask your mom or other friends about, the phone numbers and web sites are listed in the book. It's a great read, fun and entertaining at the same time. I wish I had a book like this when I was a teen!!!
