Book Description
Fully revised to address the newest materials and the latest health issues Dozens of make-it-yourself recipes for paints, pastels, varnishes, and more Expert author is chairman of ASTM committee on art materials
Much more than just another guide to artists' materials, The Painter's Handbook is an amazingly useful resource, with information on everything from the canvas up: the canvas itself, plus paper, sizes and grounds, pigments and binders, solvents and thinners, varnishes and preservatives. Dozens of step-by-step recipes for make-it-yourself paints, pastels, varnishes, gessoes, sizes, supports, and equipment take this indispensable guide way beyond the competition. Authoritatively written by Mark David Gottsegen, chair of the federal government's ASTM committee on artist's materials, the revised Painter's Handbook considers the enormous changes in the art-materials world since the first edition was published in 1993. New materials, new health issues, new information on outmoded and even harmful supplies and practices mean that every painter needs a copy of The Painter's Handbook.

Very Good and atualized.......2007-06-07
Very Good Book! There's no complete informations like Ralph Mayer, but is very simple and atualized in some topics like acrylic grounds and alkyd resins.
You make it so easy for me to shop........2007-01-16
I do know how I would rate the items I ordered for my son that works in New York City, He makes a wish list of several items he would and etc.
I have been doing this for several years and I love it as I would never know what to send him, other then Gift Cards. That's ok for some people but he lives away from home and I can choose anything I want and I know he will like the gifts I buy. He greceived gifts htat are wrapped by his Mother and Dad and he never knows what I pick out and send.. I do put other gifts like cookies, home made candy and some other surprises. Over all I would rate every thing I order and makes it so easy for me. A 5.
the premier guide .......2006-05-03
The Painter's Handbook is without doubt to artists' painting materials. Gottsegen's knowledge and expertise in the field allow for an in-depth understanding of the tools of the fine artist, and his book dispels so many of the myths surrounding art materials that have been perpetuated in other resources.

Practical and comprehensive.......2005-06-04
My painting instructor reccomended this book. If you're serious about art, you might want to get this...It's a handy reference to materials (frames, grounds, paints, solvents), techniques and safety/protection...It's also easy to follow, well researched and comprehensive. The 4 stars is because there is some outdated information...e.g. Gottsegen explains how to make oil paints...But given the health risks (of working w/ dry pigments), difficulty and time required in this process, it really isn't feasible.
Best painting materials reference book I've ever used.......2004-10-15
I recommend this book enthusiastically to my students as a concise, clear, easy-to-use and thorough reference on painting materials, especially oil painting (though it does cover other painting media). There hasn't been a technical question about materials that it hasn't answered for me, and the information provided has also led me to experiment with new materials. It is not a "how-to" book on painting and there are no pictures or anecdotes, but it is oriented towards serious students and professionals. For me, "The Joy of Cooking" of painting -- wouldn't be without it.

excellent.......2007-07-18
This book is incredible with much information and a bonus cd with extra brushes. After reading it I have signed up for Jermey's Creative Art Class in San Francisco. Leaving in a week and am very excited to get to do this in a class enviroment.
for beginers and..........2007-01-28
First of all, this is aimed at beginers and non-artists--that is, those who don't think of themselves as such. Fair enough, however, the approach for most of the book is to employ the technique of "painting over" a photograph in Painter. Not a bad technique, but just be warned that this isn't one of those book with amazing original compositions and step by stop guides on how they were created.
That said, I think this is a good place to get many of the basics of the program nailed down. And as with all complex graphics programs, the best way is to start out with the basics and then experiment. No one book can really even begin cover the range of techniques and tricks that are possible.
Recomended by a fellow traveler.......2007-01-19
While waiting for my connection to Michigan in Atlanta I stopped for a bite to eat. Chatting with the woman beside me I discovered that like my boyfriend's daughter, she was into machine embroidery and created patterns of her own. I mentioned that I was seeking a better program to use with my Wacom Intuos 3. She grinned and promptly pulled out her Gateway laptop and her own Wacom tablet and said - "Look at this!". It was my first sight of Corel Painter IX and I fell in love with it immediately. Before we parted she advised that I purchase Jeremy Sutton's Painter IX Creativity, which Amazon delivered this morning.
This book is clear, easy to follow and has excellent hands-on exercises. I like how Sutton works with beginner and pro alike. This book is exactly what I needed to enhance my Painter experience with my tablet.
If that traveler on her way to DC last Thanksgiving reads this - many thanks for recommending this excellent, hands-on tutorial.
Fantastic book!!!!!.......2007-01-10
From the experienced to the beginner this book is a most have to the digital artist. Mr. Sutton walks you through the chapters giving you his teachings and experience in an understandable way, practicing the lessons is fun and you will be amazed with the results. He is a good teacher and the book is very well organized.
The extras are worth the price of the book........2006-11-10

Painter's Handbook.......2007-06-09
This book was probably a lot better a decade (or more) ago. It's still a good enough book to help you understand some of the basics of being a painting contractor, but much of it is outdated. Paint, painting tools, and painting styles have changed quite a bit since this book was first published, and anything in the book relating to prices / costs, or anything about money at all in the book are not even close to today's.
Every single thing you'd need to know.......2007-01-04
Honestly, this book has every single thing you would need to know. Job quoting, how to manage funds, how to paint, how to hire out, how to advertise, how to do pretty much everything. The only thing that is outdated in this book is the prices. Prices rise, and so should your quotes. But this book is an absolutely invaluable resource if you are starting your painting business or are looking to grow your biz and make it more efficient.
Painter's Handbook.......2006-03-10
This book should be taken out of print. If you have worked as a professional painter for six months to a year you could write a better book than this. Horrible pictures and almost everything is completely out of date including estimating data, product information, and design and color recommendations. You would be better off buying an up to date book on running a general contracting business and asking a very knowledgable paint rep. on what products to use for specific situations.
ResidentialPainter.......2005-10-03
Very good book with many helpful hints for starting up a painting business. As other reviewers have mentioned, though, the book could use an updating--the pictures are black & white and not very clear, and some of the facts/numbers were current back in the '80s.
The first review is my honor........2004-02-29
I have had my copy since 2001 when I first went out on my own and it has become a bible for my business and my painting. My friends who are painters also own and swear to this book. This book covers the business from structure to employees and then from estimates, proposals, promotions, and sales. The author doesn't assume you'll be starting off with an office, two crews of eight painters, two pressure washers, and sprayers, a fleet of white vans, and a reserve account of thousands of dollars but he tells you how to get there if that is what you want. The book also offers insights into specialty area's were one might focus exclusively from old house restoration to sign painting to textured ceilings to murals.
The second part of the book is about the craft of painting and covers all the basics from prep to clean up, special equipment, recipes for removing every stain imaginable, and tackling tricky problems. This book doesn't have a lot of glossy pictures but it is well organized and packed with info. This part of the book is an excellent reference and I use it when I am not a hundred percent sure that my way is the absolute best way.
The only problem with this book is that it was written in 1988 and prospective users will have to refigure the financial examples used in this book to fit the present day. The craft section of this book is still practical although there have been a few new trends since 1988 such as faux finishes. But all in all this is the only great book available for the professional and while we could use an updated and expanded version this is the most complete and single source out there as of today.

Customer Reviews:
Really a great book for laypersons and attorneys.......2003-02-17
I'm a family law attorney in California. This book really is great. It answers a lot of questions that I get asked everyday. It has great advice on custody, visitation, court procedure, and how to pick (and fire) and attorney. Great for those who are doing it on their own, or for those who have an attorney. A great book to read prior to interviewing a divorce attorney. Good Job!
Handy reference.......2000-10-22
This is a nice point-by-point reference. Good to have for getting started.
