Easy sewing and rewarding projects.......2007-08-09
I really love this book - simple but rewarding projects that most sewers would have no trouble with. lovely photography.
Romantic Home Sewing.......2007-05-30
Excellent book! Christina Strutt had my tastes in mind when she wrote this book. It is for people who don't know much about sewing, love vintage fabrics and want to learn some ideas on how to use them. The pictures are beautiful and the instructions are clear.
a just OK book.......2007-05-13
The pictures are nice , the fabric & the way it presents the instructions too.
That is all to it. Nothing more.
Lovely ideas, but a minor complication-.......2007-05-06
The fabrics and patterns in this book are lovely. Photographic representation of all the projects are clear and wonderfully presented. The instructions seem clear (except I did find an important step for one of the handbags was omitted).
I give it 4 stars instead of 5 mainly because it contains templates that have to be enlarged on a copier instead of full-size patterns. It appears that is typical with sewing books, but it is an inconvenience and requires a trip to a copy store (plus the cost) since they need to be enlarged to such a degree, you cannot do it on a regular copier without great difficulty.
Fortunately there are only a few projects in this book that have templates - most of the crafts are going to be custom sized by you to fit your bed, chair, windows, etc, so templates would not be feasible.
However, I do recommend this book. I am happy to have it and I do not regret purchasing it. Christina Strutt's designs are sweet and warm and this book is a welcome addition to my collection.
Romantic Home Sewing made simple.......2006-12-14
I don't fall in love with books easily, but this one was love at first sight for me. The photos were clear. The ideas and instructions simple and easy to follow. I borrowed a copy from the public library, now I want my own.

Cluttered Country.......2005-07-05
The cover was the best photo found in the book. Many pictures showed busy rooms and cluttered kitchens. I love country chic style and am a HUGE fan of cath kidson and rachel ashwell as well as other books such as New Cottage Style and Country Chic. If you are looking for those styles, this is NOT the book. After looking through this book, i wanted to clean out my entire house due to the clutter overload.
3 and a half stars.......2005-04-12
This book is not bad, it has useful information, it has nice photos (some I've found a little dated).
However it is still helpful if you want to create your own little cottage retreat and you can get some inspiration looking at the pictures too.
I was still a little disappointed when I've received this book, probably I was expecting more up-to-date photos. I've seen better picture books out there on cottage style. I think this book is still growing on me...I got some use out of it though.
Lots of great pictures & ideas.......2004-07-20
I like decorating books with less talk and more pictures. COTTAGE STYLE fits that bill. Caringer intersperses practical suggestions alongside pictures of tasteful and innovative cottage decorating. The creative juices flow! This book stays on my coffee table simply because I like to pick it up and peruse.
The best decorating book!.......2003-01-05
I have to say this is my favorite decorating book. I could spend hours looking at this book and always see something new. I love the photos and the ideas. If you like masculin-homedecor, very contemporary, or very, very formal this may not be for you. The ideas are very easy to apply to your own home and style. I have a new home and the ideas work. If you have an older home this book is even more perfect for you! With these ideas we can relax and have style! I would call it Cottage Chic! Some Shabby Chic too. Beautiful!!! I highly recommend this book you will not be disappointed.
This is my style!.......2002-03-06
I didn't know my decorating style had a name until I found this book. It's all about decorating in a different way and avoiding the dull sameness that we usually find in suburban homes. There is something freeing about cottage style. It's all about freshness and fun and ease and escape. We are using this book and another cottage book called Second Home to inspire and guide us as we decorate our home.
Book Description
Country Living editor Niña Williams had never visited Provence, yet visions of that fabled French region permeated her dreams. And so, with a little help from some talented artists, she transformed her own simple Denver home (inside and out) into a small bit of Provençal heaven. Everywhere trompe l'oeil murals turn the walls into a storybook peopled with imaginary characters and landscapes from a tiny imaginary Provençal village. And each detail, from the ceramic dishes to the small soaps in the bathroom to the wrought iron furniture on the patio, has the perfect Provençal touch. Williams herself explains her inspiration, and the reasons behind all her choices. A pure delight and true original, this blend of romance and design primer also includes tasty tidbits like Provençal recipes (Garlic Rabbit) and information on the Provençal crafts of lacemaking, enamelware, and more.

a decorative fairy tale............2002-01-22
As stated in the book's introduction, the decoration of this
house does indeed capture the mood, spirit and colors of
Provence. Anyone looking for ideas or studies of trompe l'oeil
will totally enjoy the art on every page. I remember the
first time I saw the art of Fisher and Chappell in an old issue
of Country Living magazine. They artfully painted a garden
shed and it made the cover of the magazine. A story unfolds
as you go room to room in this house, the walls are the illustrations. French tiles, a mouse on garden tools, rabbits
in a hutch, windows to lavender fields, murals of glorious
Provencal landscapes, a broken plate on the floor, pearls on the stair steps, rose petals on a window sill: are they
real or painted? An excellent addition to a collection of
interior design books. You can't go wrong here. The resource
guide in the back features decorative sources, fabric and upholstery sources, garden catalogs and graphic designers.
Lots of garden pictures too as Nina Williams was the founding
editor of Country Living Gardener. From the kitchen to the
atelier, the boudoir to the foyer you will find inspiration!
Thumbs up!
Lovely,dreamy.......2002-01-11
This book, although not practical, is lovely and dreamy. Great for thumbing through on a weekend afternoon. The author has tapped into my psyche by fueling my dream of having a getaway cottage. We want a dreamy place not in Europe but close enough to home so that we can escape every weekend if we want to. Fortunately, that is possible in our part of the country where vacation homes are common. I've searched for vacation homes and cottage books, and the best are:
SECOND HOME. Rating: 10. This gorgeous coffee table book is also practical. Great houses, dreamy photos of locations, but the homes, which are in all styles from cabins in the woods to big family homes on the Atlantic, aren't out of reach. The book has tips on finding a location and that sort of thing as well as decorating. Nice resource list with internet sites for more information. Blends dreamy beauty with information.
THE CABIN. Rating: 6. Another pretty coffee table book. Not practical in any way but nice to look at. More of an architecture book than anything else.
COTTAGE STYLE. Rating: 8. All about decorating any home so it looks like a weekend cottkage. My decorating "bible."
ADIRONDACK STYLE. Rating: 5. Good pictures of homes and interiors. But it's limited to one rustic style, of course.
HOME DECOR. WITH A STORY TO TELL.......2001-12-13
I can't finish this book. It's so good,
I want to leave some for other days.
The decor is fasinating.
Cottage Art at its best.......2001-10-31
Nina Williams has created a gift for those of us who are artists who like to make our homes or in my case my cottage a day to day living canvas. Not only did I appreciate the "theme" which is basically a young girl flowing into adulthood but like Ms Williams I have a serious free spirit mode that is very Bohemian.
The photos are wonderful and one sees how an artist creates beauty that is a mix of fairytale and reality. And I am also a grower of French lavender and could almost smell the lavender tucked in the curtain or in the mural of the French lavender fields that seemed to stretch for miles.
And the whimsy of the strand of pearls broken and dropping down the painted stairs of her home, the mouse on the stairs the looks so lifelike and the flowers...oh my they look so real, as if freshly picked. And the young girl at the window, caught in a far off thought with love letter in hand.
And the colours and hue are so vibrant and I so love the way the artists creates smiles on peoples faces. How you open a door and see a painting on the other side. How rooms blend paintings with tile work and furniture.
This is a book I would recommend for all my fellow artist friends who love creating and are not afraid of working on non canvas surfaces.
Provence Captured.......2000-12-03
Owning a residence in Provence, We werelooking for inspiration for a redesign. This will be my bible. She perfectly captured the mood and colors of Provence. The Trompe L' Oeil work is some of the finest I have ever seen. It weaves the tri-themes of the book together perfectly. Personality makes a room.

Beautiful as Promised.......2006-03-14
I found this book to offer just what I was looking for! I wanted to find home plans with water oriented views and interesting and fanciful exteriors for my vacation beach home.
Disappointed.......2006-03-03
I was looking for house plans that had the major rooms on the front of the house overlooking a view. The title led me to believe I would find that type of home in this book. I did not. Also, most of the plans were very complicated with multiple roof angles and expensive building items.

Completely "MY" style of decorating. So many affordable ideas on how to change color scheme for the seasons. Love this book!
Book Description
Cottages are all about warmth and coziness—and here’s a book as welcoming as the style it celebrates. These pages hold the key to achieving that wonderfully laid-back cottage look, with its pickets and porch railings, time-tested color combinations, faded fabrics, family photos, and treasured collections. The pictures speak volumes about how old and new, pretty and primitive, can work perfectly together to create a welcoming retreat in any type of home. And all the ideas and projects are simple yet beautiful—whether it’s artfully antiqued furniture, whimsical birdhouses, button pillows to scatter everywhere, or a glass-paned door table.

Practical ideas for the "cottage-style" decorator.......2007-07-28
This is a beautifully photographed book written by NEVA SCOTT.This book is exactly as the title states.
The ideas are very do-able and easy to duplicate. Each chapter is filled with various insights into the making of a casual cottage-style home.
The author also gives "how-to" directions on duplicating some of the photographed ideas. Easy to follow, once again!
Since the author also owns a small boutique in Richland Washington, I hope to visit her store soon!
Great Sense of Color and Style.......2007-02-12
A cottage brings to mind a more carefree style of living than does a house or condo. It brings back the thought of summers spent in small dwellings in the mountains or along the shore somewhere. And in those cottages, you were likely to find mismatched furniture, dishes, silverware; a random collection of art work hung on the wall; fabrics from god only knows where, or when, or even why; and the finish on the wooden pieces of the furniture may or may not have paint.
In this book Ms Scott shows what can be done with such low cost (or no cost) items in a way that would fit into nearly any home, and yes, even in a condo. She has broken the subject matter into four major areas: Cozy Cottage Colors, Nurturing Nature, Decorative Displays, and Decorative Furniture.
What I find most impressive about the book is the sense of color that comes through. The photography is well cone and the printing is excellent so that the woods, the fabrics, the glassware simply sparkles. While this type of decorating isn't everyone's cup of tea, her sense of style, color, and selection of individual items might make it fit your sense of style better than you think.
Book Description
Simplicity, comfort, and intimacy define the cottage--and they are the hottest ideas in domestic design today. The personal, easy-living style of the cottage has formed a compelling counter-trend to the "bigger is better" school of modern life. Today, quality of place is more important than quantity of space, and no home style demonstrates that value more appealingly than the cottage.
Presenting charming retreats perched on rocky coasts, hidden in leafy woods, and nestled on rolling farmland, The Cottage Book explores the roots of this classic and beloved style. Century-old examples of classic getaways along with delightful modern variations are presented in richly detailed, atmospheric photographs made expressly for this book.
In this gorgeous celebration of the cottage tradition, artist, designer, and cottage expert Carol Bass showcases a group of classic early cottages, all still in happy and active use, leads us through a collection of updated and new cottages, and delineates those stylistic elements that define cottage life. Primary residence or weekend haven, The Cottage Book inspires an irresistible fantasy of a home of our own.

Finished it in a day.......2006-05-19
I finished this book in a day. I found it easy to read and very inspiring. Just looking at the pictures gave me ideas about how I'd like my home to eventually look. Not a how-to or a book offering advice - it's a book to relax with, enjoy reading and use as inspiration!
Simply the best........2005-12-27
Not so much a how-to book as it is a collection of homes to aspire to, The Cottage Book: Living Simple and Easy's combining of photographic examples and Carol Bass' prose transport the reader right into the cottages and their surroundings, with experiences beyond the visual alone. This is escapism at its asthetic best, a vacation-in-a-book. The title of the book is perfect, as are many of the featured rooms. Highly recommended for those who long to be close to nature and in touch with the past, with beauty all around as well. This is simply the best decorating book I've ever experienced. Inspirational!
Kudos for Cottage!.......2003-10-07
Fresh and "reader friendly".
The varied cottages presented by Carol Bass have soul and depth of character. And, they have a usefulness, charm and vitality that makes you want to re-create those kinds of spaces for yourself.
What does the American cottage, camp or bungalow tell us about what we add to our life when we have a little time to get-a-way? This book gave me a chance to peek into special homes that show a sense of multiple generations beautifully layered into one place at one time.
What feels very timely today is the bold use of color and the variety of different styles and materials to make a place personal.
The book is useful in creating a meaningful home.
Cottage Life at its Best.......2003-09-16
Reading The Cottage Book is a vacation in and of itself. Tons of windowsill sunlight, fresh indigenous flowers, classic patchwork bed quilts, exposed cupboards textured with china patterns from generations past and present, a perfectly positioned telescope, clothes line dried in the fresh air, vintage tablecloths draped over a table offering ice tea and croissants, and porches inviting us to spend a leisurely day enjoying the outdoors--all these things remind us that every cottage has a story worth living! Each cottage in this book is presented as unpretentious and practical, yet bright and beautiful, highlighting the simplicity, comfort, humor, and traditions found there. Particularly unique is the author's note of vibrant color introduced in each cottage room, either through unique fabrics or pieces or furniture. The book demonstrates clearly that the colors around us can have a powerful effect on our feelings and even outlook on life. A touch of vibrant color should be a basic element of any cottage home.

A MAJICAL JOURNEY INTO COTTAGE LAND.......2007-02-15
I never thought a design book would become one of my all-time favorites...but this book is the exception. If you're ready to curl up with a warm cup of tea, a lap blanket and an exceptionally good book, filled with wonderful photographs of charming cottages...this is your ticket. I could not put it down until well past midnight, when I had read it cover-to-cover. Even now I go back to it once a week for enjoyment and inspiration. It makes you really think about the kind of home you want to live in with the people you love most and the kind of home you want your children to remember their childhood in. [Warning: It will make the big, boxy, look-alike, "I've finally made it!", homes you see now even uglier!]

Inspiring.......2007-01-21
The subtitle of this book is a bit of a misnomer. There are step-by-step projects detailed in the book. However, few of these items appear in the rooms featured and there are very few sewing projects. Those looking for instructions should be aware this book is not helpful in that regard. However, for those with some sewing knowledge there are literally hundreds of potential projects - from curtains to pillows and slipcovers. Fans of the "cottage" look will also appreciate the dozens and dozens of stunning rooms including fabrics, furniture and accessory layouts and color combinations. One can walk away with countless ideas from this book; my copy has nearly half of its pages tagged with projects I plan to attempt. I would highly recommend it for such purposes.

new cottage style.......2006-11-24
I loved this book, and keep going back to it again and again, for comfy and yet clean looks for a more modern interpretation of cottage. I'm not that much into white, and like a spare but not modern look, and this book had enough examples of ways to do that to be really helpful. yarrow_m
Great Design, No Help.......2006-11-14
I truely enjoy this book. The photography and ideas are very current and create a mix of style, comfort & ideas I personally delight in. However, I was so disappointed there was no resource guide...at all. :(
I have spent days trying resource the botanical prints and have come up empty.
oh, well.
Just ok.......2006-05-18
Not my favorite cottage book, and I own many. There was just nothing special about it. It didn't inspire me as I had expected. I didn't enjoy the reading - didn't hold my interest. It does have some nice pictures.
Sorry to say............2006-02-25
This was just an O.K. book. I love decorating books, this is my least favorite. Usually decorating books inspire me and I can't put them down or at least have to fill the book with post-it notes to mark great ideas. This book I looked at,once maybe twice... it didn't give me the inspiration to do anything. Pictuers are nice... but the context, the way its split up ,then and now is just boring . There are much better books on cottage decor out there. just have to say sorry but not my fav.
This is a Beautiful Book.......2005-08-13
Finally, a Cottage Decor book with pure class. I rarely leave reviews but felt a overwhelming need to share my thoughts. My first thought just looking at the pictures, WOW! This book is packed with many inspirational ideas that is very doable for anyone interested in creating a home in beautifully updated Cottage Style. If you like Cottage home style, this book will give you a fresh new approach to all types of Cottage Decorating. As a Interior Decorator, I highly recommend that you get this book. You will not be disappointed!
