The Best Book from a Master Turner.......2007-02-24
Richard Raffan is by far one of the most recognized Master Turners in the world. This book is most likely a compilation of all of the works he has produced and presented in such a way that Turners on every level will gain something beneficial to their own turning. It is well organized and written in such plain language that every turner will have no problem understanding. The illustraions are top notch and very helpful. I would recomend this book to turners of every level.

Awsome.......2007-01-11
This book takes you from A-Z wonderful pictures and detailed information, from selection of wood to clean up. You cannot do much better in a detailed encyclopedia of information.
I fully recommend this book.

"This step-by-step pictorial reference covers all the essential techniques for turning wood. Organized for quick access, this book makes it easy to find exactly the technique you are looking for. Over 850 photos and drawings illustrated how to hold, sharpen, and use turning tools, use specialized chucks, deep hollow elegant vessels, finish at the lathe, and much more."
An it really does do so.
You will not loose with this book.

Customer Reviews:
Finishing Favorite.......2007-05-28
Before I read Jeff Jewitt's book on finishing I knew almost nothing about the finishing process. After reading this book cover to cover almost five times now, I feel confident about applying a finish to my first project. Jeff's writing style and knack for explaining make learning the often misunderstood art of finishing a pure pleasure. You will learn all types of finishing and application styles from padding, wiping, brushing and spraying. Jeff covers preparation of the wood surface all the way through staining, filling, sealing, top coats, and finally buffing. The plethora of color photos really gives you a good idea of what he is describing and enhance the text tremendously. You will not be disappointed with this encyclopedic description of wood finishing.
Excellent reference source........2007-05-15
I have been working with wood for more than 30 years. The descriptions, explanations, and charts in this book are wonderful. The illustrations are superb -- a typical Taunton Press production. Highly recommended.
Not well Organized .......2007-04-11
Unlike the other books in the Taunton's series, this one seems to jump around. The presentation is complex. This book may be useful to a more advanced woodworker. As a novice I found it daunting. It is, with out a doubt very thorough.
As good as other titles from Tauntons.......2007-03-09
It is as ilustrative ans useful as al other woodworking books from Tauntons
A beautifull book, a little disorganized........2007-01-09
Overall this book cover everything you need to know about finishing.
It is illustrated with wonderfull color pictures.
The text is clear and complete, it cover methods appropriate for the hobyist up to the industrial shop.
All the aspect of finishing are addressed.
If I had to buy one book about finishing that would be the one.
I would have given it 5 start if the book was organized in a more chronological fashion. I would have put the section talking about would conditioning, filling pores etc before the staining which would in my opinion would have make the reading easier.

Book Description
The author of The Shaper Book, The Band Saw Book, and The Complete Illustrated Guide to Shaping Wood, Lonnie Bird now brings us Taunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Using Woodworking Tools. Here the reader is given a step-by-step guide that covers the essential techniques for using hand and power tools. Along with over 900 color photographs and illustrations, a correct set-up, safe use of machines, and skillful use of hand tools is also included.
Customer Reviews:
OKish book.......2007-08-05
This is a good book. However, Lonnie Bird writes not as clear as Gary Rogowski, Andy Ray or especially Kelly Mehler. This is also applied to his "Band saw" book.
There is no clear analysis of cons and pros of different tools. Use of the tools does not contain alternative approaches too. He really thinks that only high end equipment is useful.
Another Excellent Publication By Lonnie Bird.......2007-03-16
Publications by Lonnie Bird are always excellent and informative to woodworkers, and this one achieves the same high level. I am enjoying reading Illustrated Guide to Using Woodworking Tools and looking forward to more time in the workshop with this publication.
Beautifull book, lack substance........2007-01-12
Overall this book is very well illustrated, it contains information on some tools and put an emphasis on hand tools.
The book is basically a catalog of the different tools and the basic techniques to use them.
I was expecting to at least have some discussions on how to set them up, and care for them. I was also hoping to find more detail discussion on how to chose a power tool (other than you can find some great bargain on used items).
There is a small section on sharpening but I guess you need to buy the book dedicated to the subject to go anywhere.
Excellent Woodworker's Tool.......2006-02-27
A basic guide that covers just about all you need to know on the subject.Taunton is always the source to use for the best in anything to do with carpentry and home repair.
Starting Out Right.......2005-01-01
It's not like me to wax poetic over a an introductory how-to book, but Lonnie Bird's tome on Using Woodworking Tools really is one of the finest effots I've ever seen. Taunton continues to set the bar with their 'complete illustrated' guides, but this one is exceptional for even that series.
The book offers 15 chapters divides into parts - 1) Wood and the Shop, 2) Outfitting the Shop, 3) Benches, Clamps, and Assembly, 4) Hand Tools, and 5) Power Tools. Each chapter lays in the basics and then goes on to provide a good deal of insight into the less obvious things one can accomplish with a given tool or process. The end result is a book that works at a beginners level, but retains its worth well into advanced woodworking.
Excellent illustration and layout are the standard here. I have a long standing gripe with books that use good looking models posing around brand new equipment, usually in the wrong position to do what they are attempting without losing a finger. One look at these photos, and you know you are in someone's shop. Not a new shop, but one that has come together over time, with an owner who values good tools new or used.
The text is thoughtful, straightforward, and well-written. In fact the only flaw in Using Woodworking Tools is that it is a bit more costly than many introductory books. But it has far more lasting value than most of its competition. I would rate this a best buy for the both introductory and shop reference use.

Book Description
This thorough guide features comprehensive techniques for handling the woodworker's most favored material. From felling a tree and milling lumber to finishing and joining, it covers every aspect of working with wood, with a special focus on how the unique properties of different species affect woodworking processes. Finishes, adhesives, joinery, design, and bending are covered, as well as working with highly figured material. Valuable information on how to process and store wood is also included.
Customer Reviews:
Great wood book!.......2007-04-04
This book is extremely comprehensive and full of great detailed pictures. Even better than the original. This would make a great companion to "The Encyclopedia of Wood" from the U.S. Department of Agriculture!
Excellent book.......2007-01-12
Everything you need to know to work with wood illustrated by numerous beautifull pictures.
You will find informtation on how to cut, dry, and use wood to build furniture.
Excellent Update to a Classic Woodworking Text.......2005-09-06
This book is an expanded and comprehensive update of the (out of print) classic "Working with Wood: The Basics of Craftsmanship" by Peter Korn. It also includes some of the wood structural information from "Understanding Wood: A Craftsman's Guide to Wood Technology" by Dr. R. Bruce Hoadley.
"Working with Wood" examines not only how to fell a tree, cut it up, sticker the wood, build a kiln, and when to use the lumber, but also how to construct furniture so it doesn't crack, or buckle due to changes in seasonal humidity. This book is well on its way to becoming a new classic.
A 'must' for any who regularly tackle woodworking projects.......2005-09-05
Andy Rae's Taunton's Complete Illustrated Guide To Working With Wood is a 'must' for any who regularly tackle woodworking projects. A step-by-step reference covers different techniques for working with the wood, packing in nearly a thousand photos and drawings to show how to buy lumber, dry it, store it, join it, and machine it. Andy Rae has his own woodworking business and designs his own furniture; his extensive background making furniture and teaching woodworking lends to a splendidly simple presentation outlining different wood qualities and how to work with them.

Customer Reviews:
good book.......2007-04-06
This book is very informative , easy to read & understand. If you know nothing about turning, it might be a little much. I've played with my lathe about 3 months now & wanted to get serious about the hobby. This book hit the nail on the head!
Great resource.......2007-03-14
This book provides great information for box making whether you are a veteran woodworker or a novice. Illustrations and pictures are very useful for conveying information described in written format. Highly recommended!
Big on marketing, short on details.......2007-03-02
I have over 30 year of woodworking experience building tables, chests etc. I bought this book as it sounded like everything I ever needed to know about box making. The book was a big disappointment. It has lots of colorful pictures on nice glossy thick paper, but lacks the detailed instructions of how to build a box. Normally the Taunton Press (Fine WoodWorking Magazine) has excellent articles, but this book falls short of giving you the 'know how' to build a box.
Very Good Book.......2006-07-19
If I could give this book 4 and 1/2 stars, I would. But I just can't give it five stars.
This is a really good overview on the technqiues needed to make boxes. Many techniques are covered in detail (but not too much detail). The photography is excellent. And the book is well organized and well written.
There are a few things that I'd change. First, I'd include a section that contained photos of completed boxes in order to jump start the design process. Maybe I would entitled that section "Inspiration" or "Works by Other Woodworkers".
Second, I'd include a section regarding how to rout, cut and otherwise manipulate small pieces. There are several techniques shown where the author puts his fingers really close to carbide that is spinning at 15,000 rpm. Maybe I'm a wus, but I just won't put my fingers within an inch of a spinning router bit.
Third, similar in format to a Snap-On calendar, I'd include a scantily-clad, well-endowed, blonde model, next to each picture of a completed box.
excellent intermediate book.......2006-05-02
this is a great book for the intermediate wood worker who wants to know how to (or be refreshed) on how to do some specific box making techniques. If you are looking for a project-based book, I would recommend something else. However, I enjoyed this book a lot and have learned some cool things from it.

Taunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Using Woodworking Tools (Complete Illustrated Guide)
ASIN: 1561587702
Release Date: 2006-03-21 |
Book Description
This book, in the “Complete Illustrated Guide” format covers jigs and fixtures, a subject of perennial interest to woodworkers. Jigs are like clamps. As the saying goes, “You can never have enough of them.” Jigs, simply put, are devices, sometimes shop-made but now often available commercially to enable woodworkers to do something more than once. For example, some jigs are fences that ensure straight cuts or templates capable of guiding tools to create a certain shape time after time. Woodworkers love jigs and fixtures for the same reason they are drawn to woodworking–designing them is about figuring out how to do something. All woodworkers are secretly engineers and inventors, and jig design and construction is a way to indulge that need. Some woodworkers love jig-making so much, they never build anything but. Simple or elaborate, jigs are an essential part of woodworking. This book, authored by prominent woodworking author, Sandor Nagyszalanczy, is organized like his successful 1994 book Workshop Jigs and Fixtures, according to function. This approach allows woodworkers to either build the jig exactly as shown or modify it to suit a wide variety of purposes. (Another thing woodworkers like is having choices.)
Customer Reviews:
Best of Jigs & Fixture Books.......2007-09-13
This is the best yet. Very well illustrated, cross referenced, written extremely well and superb photos.. The hardcover is worth the extra money just for the fact that it lies flat while opened, making reading on a bench very easy. Highly recommended.
Worst your time and money........2007-01-27
As usual, books in this collection are well done. The text is clear and well illustrated by hundred of color pictures.
This book cover all kinds of jigs for stationary tool and portable power tool.
Even though I already at least heard of most of the jig in this book, I still did manage to find some new ideas that are now maky my work faster and safer.
Definitively worst your time and money.
Another Winner.......2006-10-02
Sandor Nagyszalanczy has just added another excellent book to his growing and versatile collection of woodworking guides. The organization of his Jigs and Fixtures book is first rate, logical and easy to follow. It starts out with a short section on how to use the book and then follows with sections organized in a very useable way.Safety notes are interspersed throughtout and are appropriate for novice and professional woodworkers alike.I have several other jigs and fixtures books which are generally boring to read and used only to look up a specific jig. However, this is not true for Mr.Nagyszalanczy most readable and informative works which I enjoy cover to cover. I have another of his books on built-ins which is also great, and have preordered his new shop organization book.He is a frequent visitor on DIY Network's "Tools and Techniques" hosted by Popular Woodworking's David Thiel . He is as enjoyable to watch and listen to as his books are to read.I rate this book at 5 stars and my only minor critique is that the many color photos, while excellent and instructional, tend to be a bit smaller than my 64 year old eyes like to see, but that's not a big deal.As an aside, most Taunton Press woodworking guides,of which I have many, are typically of very high quality. I look forward to more guides from this extremely knowledgeable and entertaining professional woodworker.

Book Description
Choosing hardware can be fun and creative, but selecting the right hardware for a job can be difficult, even for the most experienced woodworker. Installing it is something else again. This comprehensive book covers the entire range of hardware, including common household pieces such as locks, pulls, and handles, all presented in a straightforward style. Over 700 step-by-step photos and drawings accompanied by exacting instructions ease the installation process. Tips and quick access guides help readers find the exact information they need right away.
Customer Reviews:
Good book. Lacking some details.......2007-01-27
As usual, books in this collection are well done. The text is clear and concise. The book is full of color pictures illustrating the text.
This book covers all kind of hardware from simple nail to complex hinges.
The "catalog" part of the book is well done. If covers a lot without getting too boring.
I would have given it a 5 stars rating if the information on how to install the hardware was more detailed. If you already know how to install something, reading the text makes complete sense. If you don't it is sometimes difficult with the text alone to get a good idea of the process.
Making Things Work.......2005-04-02
For the most part hardware is an unromantic subject. Frequently your options are plain and hidden away, and, unless you make your own, the fun stops as soon as you make your choices. Yet a mistake in the use or installation of hardware is often the mistake that is spotted first, easily becoming the ruin if hours of painstaking work.
Hinges happen to be my low water. I've measured, chiseled, shed blood, and excruciated more times than I want to talk about, only to find that it wasn't quite right and I had to make some devious adjustment. Settich's book may not be poetic, but it is eminently practical, and I discovered several tricks that eased the way as I read it. There are twelve sections that cover everything from the simplest nail or screw to the more arcane worlds of locks, slides, and hinges.
Lots of illustration and accompanying text reduce things into easily digestible advice that will improve your work and open new possibilities. My copy is already showing wear from numerous consultations. This really should be one of your earlier purchases in this series.
Must have.......2003-12-09
This book has far exceeded my expectations. The photos and instructions are clear, concise, and of professional quality. R. Settich presents the material in a knowledgeable and fun way. A must have resource for any workshop!
Outstanding Photos!.......2003-12-05
This book has been an excellent resource in my workshop. The photos are many and of excellent quality. The instructions are surprisingly clear... a great guide for anyone!

Book Description
This new paperback expands on the techniques covered in Shaping Wood a title in the enormously successful Complete Illustrated Guides series. It covers joinery relating to 18th century furniture styles, as well as the demanding techniques required to complete ornate period pieces. Turning and carving, as well as building accurately, are all included in a highly visual format. Anyone who loves period details and longs to create them will want this book. 300 color photos and drawings are featured.
Customer Reviews:
Very good!.......2006-05-16
I am surprised at the low book review. This is one of the best teaching books I have read. Lonnie Bird is an artist at conveying woodworking concepts. This is not a step by step how to guide to a completed project. Every detail that is covered is very well covered. I have both of the Lonnie Bird books and believe they complement each other. I highly reccomend this book and this author! If you want a good step by step book on Period Furniture try: Glen Huey's "Building Period Furniture" Both of these books are excellent. See my review under this book on Amazon.I have bought many books that are barely worth taking home. These two books are worth more than they cost! The printing and pictures in This book are superior as are all others I have read by Taunton press.
Details Add Value.......2004-07-10
This is a valuable aid in making details. Another reviewer states that 80% of the book is in another book by Bird. This might be a bit of an over statement - no matter if just 20% is new material the book is worth it. I own both of the books he addresses - I noticed the duplication right away. The real question is "will this book make you a better period furniture maker?" I am 57 years old - own every tool required to make period furiture - hold a Masters certification from Marc Adams School of Woodworking - have taken course work with some of the top people in the field - I am now working on a Philidelphia Low Boy and am wooking with Allan Breed (instructor) - and this book is helpful and even insightful. I know at least four of the eighteen of us in class have purchased this book.

If you already own Lonnie Bird's Complete Illustrated Guide to Shaping Wood you will be extremely disappointed with this book. It seemed that 80% was duplicate material. The book descriptions says that this book expands on the techniques covered in Shaping Wood. To me, it looked like nothing more than a page for page copy.

Lots of information.......2007-01-26
Taunton has a knack of putting a lot of information in a nice format. These books are NOT for taking to the shop and following along but they are good books for reference in the shop.

Customer Reviews:
Greatest Book !!!.......2007-02-07
This is the greatest book to learn how to woodturn. You won't be sorry!
Crisp, great photos, lots of content and pedestrian.......2006-03-23
Taunton does an excellent job of producing attractive, well written wide market appeal products. The content of Complete Illustrated Guide is a convenient collection of the same articles you will find in their "Fine Woodworking" magazine. The authors are knowledgable, and very successful in thier space. Unfortunately, in building the mass appeal formula, Taunton had to give up anything edgy, its all vanilla and no "rocky road". A recent copy of Fine Woodworking for example rated central dust vacuums. They rated 3 "best" each was from the product line of one of the top three manufacturers each of whom advertise heavily in thier publications. As I recall there is usually one "best" and then others follow. This straddling is what I mean by no edgyness, they are trying to appeal to everyone and offend no one. In the end this approach results in what I believe is the best vanilla product out there and I love to consume what they produce, just have to take it for what it is, mass production. If you have progressed in woodworking to the point where you are becomming an artist or want to learn something new, look here for foundation and elsewhere for creativity. Most folks will benefit from both.
A brillient starter book.......2006-03-21
This book is excellant for those people starting out in wood working as it shows what can be done wihtout overwealming the reader. Althrough there is not enougth detail to pick up all the tricks, it does give you enougth basic ideas to be able to get a more advanced book and actually know what it is talking about. On the strength of this book, i will be buying most, if not all, of the Taunton's Illustrated Guides.
Great Manual!.......2006-02-27
Unless you are a seasoned professional, this book actually will guide you through what you need to know to get the job done. This book serves as a great woodworking companion.
Great Guide.......2005-11-30
I've justed considering doing something about my interest in woodworking. After watching scores of decorating shows where they build fairly simple pieces of furniture, I felt I needed a more detailed guide. I was especially interested in the tools, their uses and general kind of construction. This book has it all and explains it in an easy-to-understand manner. My husband has almost all the tools, but I don't know how to use them.
I really like the Case Joinery section where they explain various ways to join pieces of wood and the Construction secion where they show you how to construct different projects, including doors, drawers and shelves. They not only explain it, but include color photographs that are easy to follow.
There is so much covered in this book and was well worth the money. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. I have several Taunton books and this one rates up there with the best of them.
