Book Description
The Knitting Revolution? What`s revolutionary about knitting today is who is knitting (the new knitters are young women and retiring baby-boomers), what they are knitting (exciting yarns and projects), and most of all, why they are knitting (it feels good: the process, its creative and relaxing qualities, is at least as important to them as what they are knitting). What better time for a fresh approach to the learn-to-knit book?
Join The Knitting Revolution focuses on the knit stitch. With introductory chapters titled The Basics of Knitting, What You Need to Know Before You Begin a Project, and So You`re Ready to Start Knitting, this primer is the closest thing betweeen two covers to a knitting coach. Hundreds of clear, step-by-step photographs take you through each skill. Always the goal is to show you what you need to know when you need to know it. Choices are given, so each knitter can find the way that works best. Then the skills are put to work (and into a meaningful context) in the chapter`s projects. Loads of tips and special attention to details ensure that absolute beginners can complete any of the more-than-30 projects successfully; class, yet fun designs assure that they will want to.Like knitting today, this book is personal, passionate, powerfulexactly what the new knitter is looking for and irresistible to the already-converted.

disappointed.......2007-08-26
Touted to be a simple book. Instructions were not. Be sure to check publisher site for corrections.
The best book for new knitters....and the rest of us!!.......2007-08-02
This is an amazing book. Sally teaches in the most logical way: She has you knitting from the start.
Oh, to have had this, when I began knitting! I can see myself now, trying desperately to do what felt like a dozen things at once. None of that. By beginning at the very start with just the knit stitch (not a dozen others), you can find yourself making some of the most beautiful pieces I have ever seen.
And for those who, like myself, are knitters now, here is a book full of delicious patterns to relax whilst making....as well as, to use to help friends & family to begin the adventure as well.
Simply the best there is.
knitting book.......2007-07-18
Love this book. My daughters have both requested that I knit them the Einstein Coat.
Jersey girl comments.......2007-05-12
I found the Knit Book to be easy to use.I made the Einstien Coat and love wearing it.Melville explains even the simplest things or complicated things in a way that gives confidence so you can proceed to a completed garment.
The Knitting Experience: Book 1: The Knit Stitch.......2007-03-08
Excellent step-by-step instructions for those of us who are beginner knitters. I have made a sweater from this book that I love and in the process learned a lot about the art of knitting. Highly recommended!
Book Description
An essential reference for knitters from novice to expert, this fully illustrated sourcebook is the first of three "stitch dictionaries," to be written by the professionals at Vogue® Knitting. Some 300 stitches are detailed, and hundreds of charts, photographs, and illustrations make it easy to understand how to construct each stitch, as well as the ways they can be used in projects. The experts at Vogue® Knitting demonstrate rib stitches such as brioche, herringbone, chevron, and quilted patterns; traveling patterns like parquet, ripple, and diamond stitches; lace, including daisy and wave patterns; and such unusual stitches as eye of lynx, bobble block, peppercorn, and bamboo. The most complete book of its kind, this is the definitive stitch reference!

No charts - What were they thinking?.......2007-07-30
The patterns in this book are beautiful, but they're useless to me because they don't have charts. I've never seen a book of this type without charts.
They should have used bigger needles for the lace patterns - many of the patterns were hard to see.
Excellent source of pattern stitches.......2007-03-31
I'm delighted! This will replace several dog-eared pamphlets and one that has indelible tea stains. There are many, many stitches, and I'm using three in the sweater I'm knitting now.
I Expected More from a Vogue Knitting Book.......2007-02-08
Stitch dictionaries are useful to inspire original knitting patterns, as well as to check the accuracy of printed knitting directions. So I was excited to find Volume 1 of Vogue's 3-volume Knitting Stitchionary series. However, I must say that I am quite disappointed in this book. Having grown used to almost all knitting instructions(however simple) being accompanied by a chart to quickly show the knitter the pattern, I found the lack of charts in this book to seriously hamper its usefulness. Also, I found the lack of an index to be seriously annoying. For example, I wanted to refer to directions for the "Harris Tweed" stitch, and I ended up having to thumb through 40 pages of the book, only to discover that this quite common and beautiful pattern is not included!
The book does include 265 stitches made using only the knit and purl stitch, including a fairly extensive collection of lace patterns.
If your knitting library has room for only one stitch dictionary, I think there are better ones available. For the money, I recommend "The Big Book of Knitting Stitch Patterns" which is much more user friendly and available in paperback.
Great Value!.......2007-02-07
The Vogue Knitting Stichionary Volume One: Knit & Purl is a fabulous book for those looking for patterns in one book. The book is great when you want to knit something as simple as a scarf and combine the different patterns. The directions are clear and easy to read. The price of the book is also so much less expensive as the book stores as well! It's a great value!
Good but..........2007-01-19
This book needs an index with thumbnail pix. The book also could have included charts. Also I found it a bit boring with all swatches in the same color.
Overall, I am satisfied with vol 1 & 2, although a little disappointed with #3.

crochet.......2007-10-10
I enjoyed purchasing this book especially where it allows you to actually look through the book before purchasing - so when I received the book, it was exactly what I wanted
200 Ripple Stitch Patterns.......2007-08-12
This book has an interesting way of presenting both crochet and knit patterns. With this system you can make any size you desire in your project.
Crochet preference for myselff.......2007-06-19
I saw a Granny ripple on an online blog, referencing the title, 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns. I was intrigued and ordered the book. I am not new to crochet, but I am somewhat advanced-newish to ripples and I find the ripple afghans charming. I love to match and compliment colors to my quilts and this gives me a nice reference to use for complimentary "ripples" too. I am more into crochet, but the knit pictures are nice too! I have more than one or two favorites, so the price was worth it to me to see these charmers on a bed or sofa! For those who love to ripple, I think this is inspiration waiting to happen.
Nice collection.......2007-06-07
This is a beautiful book, but I too was upset to discover that there are no where near 200 different patterns. The same pattern is counted as 2, sometimes 3 different ones when yarns are switched out or used in a different sequence. While this produces a slightly different look, the PATTERN remains the same. I have only tried a handful of the patterns, and so far have not encountered errata.
Totally incorrect stitch count.......2007-05-04
I got this book for christmas (it was on my wishlist after I saw it in the store) mainly because I liked the crochet patterns.
I just sat down to try one of the knit patterns--"Celtic Waves"--which is actually a pretty easy feather and fan pattern. Or, at least, it *should* be easy. The pattern says to CO a multiple of 16st+3. So I got to row 4 of the pattern and did it stitch by stitch until I ran short of stitches on my needle.
So I added up how many stitches you actually *need* on the needle in order to do it exactly as written, and it's 33.
I really hope they publish an errata, because though I could easily figure out how to fix their patterns, I really shouldn't have to take the time to do that.

Customer Reviews:
Great content, frustrating construction.......2007-08-22
I love the idea of this calendar and the content. The pictures make me want to pick up my needles and start creating. I've used countless patterns from it.
The only reason I gave it such a low rating is because I've owned two and both have fallen apart. The way the wire rings (more of a C shape really)are designed you have to balance it just right so pages don't start falling off the wire. And then the next day when you turn the page you do it all over again - pages fall off, you finagle them back on and then try to get it to stand up without losing more pages. If the company could make a better ring design I'd give it 5 stars.
So a girl walks into a knitting shop. . . . ........2007-06-19
. . . . and needed a book with a bunch of patterns and this is what they hand me. I was in a big knitting shop in Austin - they have TONS of samples knitted up with the yarns that they sell. I inquired about several scarves they had hanging and all of them came from this collection of patterns. Perfect for adding a pattern to a scarf, sock, or otherwise plain sweater.
Purely a wealth of wonderful patterns. Great book if all you need are stitch patterns. Beware: this is not for those folks who do not have other instructional books and/or not willing to experiment with the patterns. Because there are not specific projects in mind, the patterns sometimes have to be "tried" to get needle sizing and finished project dimensions worked out. This is not the guide to show you how to knit, purl, ssk, k2tog - or any techniques. But that's ok - - sometimes you just need the pattern (I think some books waste a bunch of space on the "how to" aspect).
As far as I can tell, there is no sequence to the pattern order - but it's very easy to flip through - - - and if the pattern you are looking for has a name, you can look them up that way, too. The color photos are clear. And the actual size of the book is perfect - easy to slip into a knitting bag. Plus the spiral binding is nice- you don't have to worry about the pages flipping over.
Wonderful stitch dictionary.......2007-05-13
I have had this book for a few years and I recently ordered it for 2 of my knitting friends. I love the stitch patterns in here! I make a lot of baby hats--I just use my basic pattern, plug in a new stitch pattern, and I have a brand new hat pattern! I love this book!
knitting calendar.......2007-05-09
This is a great calendar. You can use it year after year. The only thing I don't like about it is some of the directions.
Great for new projects.......2007-04-11
I am enjoying this calendar. It keeps me knitting. I even bought two more for fiends.

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-08-30
OK, so I had known the basics of knitting before I got the book. I knew how to cast on and off, how to knit (turns out, I used to knit tbl), purl and make basic cables. I was totally afraid of laces and the very idea of shaping sent shivers down my spine. Not any more! I sat down with a pair of needles and worked through the book and I made it, I can knit now. This book has everything - the basics, stitches, techniques and patterns. Some people find Debbie Bliss' way of describing patterns hard to follow, but I personally prefer it to charts. All I could possibly wish for is adding more patterns for adults, especially plus-sized adults.
Good for someone transitioning from "beginner".......2007-04-01
I did not use this book to learn how to knit--I bought it for its stitch libraries and these have not disappointed. There are pages and pages of stitch patterns from the very basic to the more difficult that are easy to read and have great variety. I have incorporated several of these stitch patterns into new designs. My brother is in the navy, so I created a fun scarf pattern using the "Anchor" stitch, and it turned out great. However, I would not recommend this book for someone who has never held a pair of knitting needles and has no idea how to knit: the instructions are brief and the diagrams are not very helpful. But if you know your basic stitches and want to transition to something a litle more complicated than garter stitch scarves, this is a great help!
USER FRIENDLY!!!.......2007-02-14
A nicely done book which can take you from absolute or advanced beginner to advanced quite easily. I like the layout, the photos, the projects and the simple way it's written. Also makes a good reference book for the advanced beginner to intermediate.
Knitting book.......2007-01-11
This is great for a beginning knitter and the pattern suggestions and designs are valuable for experienced knitters, too. I have been knitting for many years but bought it because I had seen it and wanted the patterns. It was VERY gently used but in excellent condition as advertised.
I would not buy this book again.......2006-04-11
I'm not a big fan of this book, really. Here's why:
1. It's not at all comprehensive. I've had questions about how to do certain techniques (provisional cast-ons, for example), and the book had nothing on it.
2. The instructions were not the clearest. I'm not a beginner, but even I had trouble with a few of the explanations.
3. The patterns are not great, but I'm not a huge fan of Debbie Bliss designs in general -- the garments are simply too boxy and bulky for my tastes. The baby blanket and some of the kid garments are ok, though.
4. There are some pictures of finished projects that are not actually given in the book.
The stitch dictionaries are nice, but not very inclusive, and most of the stitch patterns can be found in either the Harmony Guides or other books by Debbie Bliss.
Book Description
Novice knitters only need to know a few stitches to make a collection of dolls with personality and wardrobes to match. To begin, the practical knitting and sewing know-how section illustrates the simple garter and stockinette stitches used to assemble the dolls. Supplies are minimal and easy to obtain—just yarn and thread, sewing and knitting needles, and some small pieces of fabric for the clothes and accessories. One each of five sections is devoted to creating each doll's identity and accoutrements. Included are sewing templates to cut out and use, knitting charts, and advice on washing and caring for these dolls. This skill-building project book is a start-to-finish playmate maker that will inspire creativity and spark the imagination.

Starlet Babes.......2007-08-12
The pleasure is all yours! Published September, 2005 Knitted Babes: Five Dolls & Their Wardrobes to Knit & Stitch by Claire Garland is an invitation to a modish doll party. Bring your eccentric yarns and retro fabric scraps. This is the place for orange and pink marshmallow creations. Knit up the Babes then outfit them as you choose -- surfer girl or glitzy diva, whoever takes your fancy. Make a Babe, and you'll want more. Here are my variations for fervent fingers:
The Babes: Dot Pebbles surf chick; Flo Tilly delicate dancer; DD Diva in desirable Deco; Rudy Ranch red-haired Western wild country girl; Bunny Bright café bar star.
1. The arms and legs can be worked in i-cord, though the original knitted strips are softer if your doll is to be love-squashed by a little one. Finish the i-cord with four rows of straight stocking stitch to enable flat stitching to body shape.
2. Experienced knitters may prefer to knit the body/head piece in the round. Cast on with waste yarn (or crochet a scrap chain a few more chains than required, then knit up stitches into back bumps of chain. Release chain later when sliding stitches onto needle for cast off.). When doll is completed, leave final stitches for head on a yarn holder, turn inside out, working a 3-needle cast (bind) off across base. Pull through to right side. Stuff doll through small head opening and finish ends.
3. The book instructions are for 4ply yarn, but that's only the beginning. Dye natural wool with plant dyes. Perhaps use handspun or tweed wool; or since only a 50g ball is required, use a luxury fibre (silk, alpaca, cashmere) for a chic Babe.
4. After making a few Retro Babes, you might want to add to your collection with Vintage Babes. Style her wardrobe, adding highlights of violet, pearl, mauve, rosebud, pansy and spring greens. Freshwater pearls (where jewellery packs are sold) make sweet necklaces strung on a length of crochet perle cotton. Cocktail hats can be fashioned from felt, netting, feathers, beads and miniature silk flowers. Sift through broken brooches, bracelets, earrings and necklaces for deft jewels and metal filigree.
5. The clothing patterns given in the book are knitted or sewn. Imagine designing crochet creations for her as well. Begin with an evening shawl or textured blanket for Ruby cowgirl. Diva Babe will thank you for snips of pure silk satin, cotton net and silk georgette.
6. Observe safety rules if the doll is a gift for a small child. If this is your Babe... try out jewellery-making on a manageable scale or accentuate clothing and hats with glass beads. Excite yourself with a new craft, letting Babe model your embroidery, cross-stitch or millinery techniques. Fabric shops are stocking up on retro and vintage prints. Dive in!
Buy the book and have some fun! Vibrant photos, comprehensible instructions and bright knitting charts for fair-isle colourwork. No confusion here. Anyone can create a starlet Babe. (Yes, the neck is floppy, but she is a saucy cuddle and bedtime friend).
The Babes are the best!.......2007-04-18
When this book arrived, all other projects were pushed aside! the instuctions and patterns are easy to understand and the knitted clothing patterns are a good introduction to constructing people sized garments. The reason I gave the book four instead of five stars is the gauge issue mentioned by several others. I am not quite sure if this is due to the fact I am a very tight knitter or the book. It wasn't that huge an issue, I will use this book alot and I'm sure you will too.
So cute - but beware!.......2006-09-07
I love this book, I have been working very hard putting things together for my two little girls, BUT a lot of the instructions haven't worked for me. I have had to improvise a lot. After my girls play with them all the stuffing goes up to their head and down to their bodies, leaving the neck completely floppy, and from reading other reviews I should have checked my gauge, because following the instructions as written everything has come out too small.
After all that, I have to say my girls love the dolls and it was a blast making them.
Love the book but..........2006-07-24
I was very excited when I saw this book as I wanted to make birthday presents for my friend's girls. I tried to match the gauge to make the doll and had to go up to size five needles even though I was using fingering weight yarn. The first outfit I made was the tutu. I matched the guage and still ended up with an outfit that was far too small.
Just beware of of yarn recommendations and needle sizes!
Worth Every Penny!.......2006-06-25
Just received this book and what a super value! So many cute dolls, clothes and shoes to make and super easy, well illustrated format.Even has knitting, sewing and crochet instructions, so the novice can tackle any project. So far all patterns work up great and possibilities are endless!.Great job Claire Garland!

Hideous hats, ridiculous wraps, embarrassing neckties, and more they're all on display at The Museum of Kitschy Stitches, a photographic gallery of knitting and crocheting horrors. Along the way, she provides sidesplitting commentary about the models and their very unfortunate fashion choices. It's essential reading for knitters and nostalgia buffs!

No Stars...No Patterns..........2007-04-19
Disappointing book with no patterns. Sure, there are some humorous pictures but it would have been hilarious to create these works of art. I returned the book..
Still Laughing!.......2007-04-07
This book was so funny that even my husband -- who has never knit or crocheted in his life -- was laughing, too. Whether it was making fun of the poses of the models or the items they were wearing, I laughed so hard that I could hardly get my breath. It wasn't just that some of the items were obviously from another era and therefore outdated (ooh, did we really think granny squares were that cool in the 70s? did we really wear our hair that way in the 80s?), it was that some of the items featured were so outrageously stupid that you wonder anyone would have created them in the first place! Case in point: Early in the book there is a rather nice pair of mittens with a matching hat, both knit in bold stripe patterns with jewel-tone yarns. Why did the designer decide to cover it all with little white pom-poms? I'm sure it was to emulate snow as well as to cash in on what was a current craze for pom-poms, but it still looks like (as the author writes) someone lost "the mother of all spit-ball contests."
I've shared this book with my mother, my husband, and numerous friends. Whether or not they knit, they all appreciate the humor of it.
Knitters Coffee Table book.......2007-03-28
If you lived through the 60's/70's you can appreciate the hilarity of the styles that Stitchy McYarnpants ridicules in her book. The horror is that some of us actually had to wear similar clothing... Honestly though, the photos were funny and the captions/paragraphs are even funnier!
"personally, I think most of the outfits in this book look really cool. -B.".......2007-02-21
My big brother sent this over for my birthday and I LOVE IT!!! And so will you and all manic knitters with an active funny bone.
Basically, the author Debbie Brisson, collects vintage (and not only) knit and crochet patterns from the 20s to the 80s and has generously shared the photos with us, with captions and blurb of her own-the kind that's so funny, it'll make you cry.
To be fair, there are a couple things in here that really aren't that bad-my personal favorites being the faux wraparound dress-and I quote "...complete with an imitation belt, artificial pocket, and a simulated silk scarf." Maybe it's speedier than knitting a real wraparound dress? The hamburger pillow set-oh, I have GOT to make me one of these-I bet I could do it too, okay, maybe not in one go, or even one year, but certainly one lifetime. I hope. Note to self; go to author's website ([...]) and see if she has the pattern for it there. Or beg her for it.
At the end of it all, we're graced with two actual patterns we can use, one for a clip on tie, um, words fail me; and one for a 'Grin And Bear It Granny Square It Bag' which, you know if you substitute the square patterns from something out of Jan Eaton's 200 Crochet Blocks, nix the tassles, pom-poms and braided cord, substitute the yarn for something decent and buy a gorgeous bead or button, maybe relocate the straps and off with a couple squares, it wouldn't be half bad!
Bottom line, your personal knit/crochet library would be naked without this book. And you know how the fashion world works-what goes around, comes around (or is that karma?) This way, when knitted 2-piece peephole pant suits make a comeback, you can totally get the jump on everybody else.
Meanwhile, Brad, is so getting that tie. With a monkey tie-pin.
Hats to laugh at ..........2006-11-30
Subtitled: A Gallery of Notorious Knits
"...The Museum of Kitschy Stitches, a collection of the most groan-inspiring crimes against hand-crafted fashion ever to assault the senses."
Based on Stitchy McYarnpants' description of her book, it is understandable if a reader hesitates before picking up
The Museum of Kitschy Stitches: a Gallery of Notorious Knits. McYarnpants has been delighting readers by investigating crafting's most embarrassing moments and exposing them to the world's scrutiny on her blog [...]. Hideous hats, granny squares gone mad, and more are featured in all their awful glory.
In
The Museum of Kitschy Stitches (the book), McYarnpants has selected the best of the worst and added her own juicy descriptions to the devastating fashion choices. In her preface to the first chapter "Hoodwinked: Never Trust a Homemade Hat," McYarnpants advises: "Choose carefully, for in the turbulent waters of fashion, the fish stinks from the head down."
Many of the designs in the book are sure to induce nightmares but none as completely as the hat featured on page 17, a particularly abhorrent ski mask.
McYarnpants counters the horror with her trademark wit, inducing gales of laughter in readers, ending with this outrageous statement: "Oh, how rude of me! Let me introduce you. This is Leatherface's more sadistic cousin, Yarnface."
This is perfect coffee table reading material, a great conversation starter and the perfect cautionary tale for when good knitters go bad. As Stitchy McYarnpants says: "Remember, only use your knitting powers for good." An important lesson for us all!
Armchair Interviews says: Stitches and "schtick" all in one book!

Customer Reviews:
Buy this magazine!.......2007-09-17
Pros:
* More interesting projects and "non-project" aritcles than Ready Made.
* I disagree with the reviewers who want more step-by-step how-tos... The editors trade inspiration for instruction a few times, to me this shows that they are assuming I am a creative, crafty type
* Healthy mix of "things I would like to try" and "who has all these materials laying around?"
* Lots of online resources, links, and advertisers--I like me some web surfing
* Great companion to Make, and I really appreciate that it doesn't scream "girl version"
Cons:
* Someone else already mentioned this, but it is a HUGE miss that the Jess H. robots on the cover aren't in the mag. I mean, come ON.
* Small format is good for carrying around, but this isn't really the type of mag that needs carrying around. Give me a bigger format and more diagrams
* Should come out more often!
Hurray for CRAFT!.......2007-02-03
The first issue of CRAFT is scrumtralescent! I can't wait for more! The ideas are fun and inspiring and make me want to get my craft ON. (Plus, I love the small, take-it-on-the-bus size.) Hurray for this great addition to the world of craftiness!
A must-read for any artist or crafter!.......2007-02-02
I was blown away by this innovative and captivating design and craft magazine. I am an all-around designer, artist and crafter always looking for my next obession. There were awesome ideas in here for any level of skill and really unique and cutting-edge things as well. I am hooked!
Craftastic!.......2006-11-20
This is a magazine for craft aficionados. The smaller size is perfect for crafters on the go and the paper stock and printing show that the creators care about details. The layout is clean and contemporary and the articles are short and sweet. The projects are innovative with simple instructions that even a beginner could follow. Even the ads are worth looking at in this fantastic addition to crafting culture.
Agreed with previous poster!.......2006-11-15
I agree with the poster below, what a rip off! I have been searching all over for the Jess Hutch booklet, and when the cover of this magazine showed the knitted robots and also the banner "Stitch a Robot," I figured I would pick the magazine up just for that... let me tell you when I turned to the page and it was a totally different robot that was CROCHETED, which I can not do... I was very dissappointed.
Total waste.
