Books are great..........2006-11-21
I have all the parts (Fellowship of the ring, Return of the King & The Two Towers). I have loved the audiobooks.
I only have 1 problem with the audiobooks and that is when I converted the discs so I could listen to them on my ipod, the names of each track varied.
On some it ists the name of teh chapter and followed by a number(part of the chapter, others it names the book and the track number without the chapter title name, and on others it says the track number...
They should have been consistent with the track names.
Lord of the Rings for car trips?.......2006-11-19
It's hard to add more than other reviewers have done. Most of the comments are right-on, but I think it's nice for a potential buyer to hear a lot of people voicing their opinions. This is a long set but perfect for a devoted fan. I love listening to it while doing other things or in the car on the way to work, probably also for an airplane. Rob Inglis did a great job, and while a few of the female voices are a bit odd, you soon forget about such things when you get wrapped up in the story.
He adds the right emphasis to the right parts and I think his voice is well-suited to this work. For hardcore LotR fans, it's hard to find something that meets our high expectations as this is a simply amazing work of art that will last for years - it's hard to find a voice that meets every (somewhat unreal, I think) expectation. But Rob Inglis comes extremely close.
It's a Good buy.......2006-06-03
It is a nice audio book. It does have it's flaws though.
1. It does not offer maps or any drawings. I have searched online for some, but only find blurry copies. Considering the maps and drawings are held so highly in admiration... it kinda sucks not to have them
2. the acting of the narrator is not the greatest. There were parts when the book notes "he yells" and the narrator speaks in a calm and clear character voice. It's kind of funny sometimes.
3. many of the narrator's "attempted" character voices sound alike. All the elf kind sound the same, even the women sound like males. All the hobbits pretty much sound the same, except Sam who has this manly deep voice, which often sounds like Aragon. Often the narrator accidentally mergers one character voice into another by accident. So a hobbit will be speaking then all the sudden he sounds like Aragon or Gandolf.
But outside of that the audio book is great. These "problems" are small. Since the un-abridged reading offers the names of who is talking and their emotions that go along with it, you can make out the story just fine. It just takes a little more imagination and you can alter their voices in your head to sound like what you want to hear. I would highly reccomend it, that is until someone figures out they can get a better actor or has the mind to hire multiple actors to fulfill the part.
There is nothing funnier than hearing a deep manly voice trying to immitate a woman singing
Brilliant, and well worth the money!.......2006-04-15
I am not a "Total Ringophile", like some out there, but I have read the books three times and loved them. I lashed out and purchased this 46 CD set as I spend a lot of time on the commute to work. It is brilliant! Each CD has approx 15 "tracks" on it so that if you miss a bit as your mind wanders (as it does in the car..) you can just bounce back one track and hear that bit again, no problems. Rob Inglis does a great job, no question. It has added a new dimension to my experince of Tolkien's masterpiece, and I highly recommend it to all. BRILLIANT !
Ingles does a fantastic job.......2005-11-26
I did not realize what a wonderful job that Ingles had done in this reading until I began listening to other audio books. Ingles manages to give each character a distinct voice and as you proceed, you recognize immediately who it is that is speaking.
After many years, Tolkien's work stands alone as the only sci-fi/fantasy story that puts the subtlety of language and culture equal to, if not above, the drama. Ingles interesting voices and care with the language of Tolkien make this a most worthy represenation of the timeless classic.

Customer Reviews:
I purchased 5 books and am so glad I did!!!.......2007-09-18
This book is truly a great deal. Hard cover, spiral so the book lays flat. Plastic insert to keep your pages clean. One of the best books for a beginner cook. Directions on cuts of meat, how to carve a turkey, different herbs and their use, different kinds of mushrooms, measurements and equivalents, cooking times, all kinds of tips and very helpful directions... I could go on with that but it's quite clear :-) Great Indexes and each section has it's own little indexe. Recipes are easy to follow and the ones I have tried so far are delicious. I have four children and each one is receiving the book as a present for christmas! Definitely worth the money.
Another Taste Of Home great!.......2007-08-27
I honestly didn't expect anything less than great and that is what I got! It is a good book with real food for real families!
truly the best cookbook.......2007-07-30
I received this cookbook a few weeks ago as a bridal shower gift. I am getting married in September, and I am not the best of cooks, but I am trying to learn. I can cook basic things (e.g. stir fry) and follow recipes. Luckily, my fiance is an awesome cook, but both he and I were sick of complicated recipes that involved too many pots and pans (we don't have a dishwasher) and too many one-time-use grocery purchases. (Like clam juice or mustard seed.) This cookbook is amazing. Every recipe we have tried has turned out and tasted FABULOUS. Most of the recipes are quite simple and use things that we already have or would buy anyway. The cookbook also has great, simple tips on cooking techniques and food information. Someone at my bridal shower told me it would be the only cookbook I would ever need and they were right!
Pleasantly Surprised But Shouldn't Have Been.......2007-07-15
I ordered this cookbook as a wedding gift for a young woman who doesn't know much about cooking. The reason for choosing this cookbook over others is the reputation of Taste of Home magazine and it's recipes.
The book arrived and now I want a copy of my own. And I've been cooking for over 60 years. I lust for this book.
It's a perfect combination of information for new cooks, mouth watering pictures, and yummy sounding recipes that the more experienced cook would like to try. And it does all this in the TOH special down-to-earth style. Not snooty and above the rest of us as some cookbooks tend to be.
I highly recommend this book for young folks starting out on their own. Whether in marriage, career, or some combination. A perfect first cookbook.
Awesome Recipes.......2007-07-15
I have always enjoyed a great recipe and knowing that "Taste of Home" has never let me down, I chose this as a gift for a friend. I then decided that it was too good a cookbook to not have for myself and purchased one also. I was indeed correct; my family has not had one recipe from this book that was not enjoyed. A real winner for the novice or experienced cook or baker.

the best cookbook out there.......2007-10-11
this was a gift for my sister-in-law and I believe everyone should own a copy of this book. It is the most helpful general cookbook I have ever owned and I have given copies to many friends and family members.
Favorite.......2007-09-08
This was my favorite cook book and my daughter thought so too, so I bought her this one for her new home.
Good basic source.......2007-08-16
Great 'learn to cook' source. I sent each of my kids off to their first apartments with a copy.
Love this book!.......2007-07-24
I borrowed the book from the library. This was the only cookbook that I borrowed from the library that I use practically everyday. After renewing the book three times, I think it was time to purchase it. The instructions are easy to follow, the ingredients simple, and I've only had something come out bad once due to a missed ingredient on my part. This book is really great for a beginner to intermediate - where fanciful is not necessary.
Are roasted red peppers the new sun dried tomatoes?.......2007-07-18
The recipes are solid and practical. I use this cookbook as my starter when I'm planning meals for the week. If it doesn't have a recipe for a particular base, then I move on. It works well in that role. I have noticed a number of recipes that would've had sun dried tomatoes as a unique flavor in previous recipes now have roasted red peppers.
The ability of the cookbook to stay open on it's own is a real bonus.
Book Description
Setting down his thoughts on swordplay, on winning, and on spirituality, legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi intended this modest work as a guide for his immediate disciples and future generations of samurai. He had little idea he was penning a masterpiece that would be eagerly devoured by
people in all walks of life centuries after his death.
Along with The Art of War by Sun Tzu, The Book of Five Rings has long been regarded as an invaluable treatise on the strategy of winning. Musashi's timeless advice on defeating an adversary, throwing an opponent off-guard, creating confusion, and other techniques for overpowering an assailant was
addressed to the readers of earlier times on the battlefield, and now serves the modern reader in the battle of life.
In this new rendering by the translator of Hagakure and The Unfettered Mind, William Scott Wilson adheres rigorously to the seventeenth-century Japanese text and clarifies points of ambiguity in earlier translations. In addition, he offers an extensive introduction and a translation of Musashi's
rarely published The Way of Walking Alone. This gift-book edition also features original art by Musashi himself as well as new calligraphy by Japanese artist Shiro Tsujimura.

A Classic of World Literature.......2007-10-05
It is astonishing to see some of the inane things said in negative reviews. A good part of the beauty and power of this book is that the student must determine for himself or herself the applicability of the information to any given situation. One of Miyamoto Musashi's main points is that there are not absolute formulas for success. Those looking for templates must look elsewhere. This is a book of how to see and approach action by one who ranks as one of the great warriors of any history.
Beyond this, though I am no Japanese scholar, my Japanese speaking friends say that Wilson's translation is truest to the original while being quite readable in English. It is a beautifully printed little book, and for me treasure to be cherished and studied again and again.
The student should investigate this thoroughly. :)
Loose but effective translation.......2007-09-10
I bought this book for my boss. Thomas Cleary's adaptation is much more accurate, but it's a dry read. Wilson opts for effectiveness rather than accuracy in some places, but it's a great option for those who don't have the attention span to really push through denser text.
Fantastic but careful about translation.......2007-08-23
this book is a must have to those who like japanese culture, specially samurai culture.
But, to those who want to go deeper, the translation from japanese to english has some flaws.
Easy to Read - Difficult to Apply.......2007-07-19
The Book of Five Rings is a superb little book that makes some important points. However, it is all too easy to take what it has to say out of context. The time and place to which it was literally relevant has long since passed. What it has to say about the values one should live by and how one should carry out their mission in life are, on the other hand, timeless.
The same can be said of another important Japanese classic: Hagakure: The Book of the Samauri. Both of these books are important from a philosophical point of view, but difficult to really understand for those who are not immersed in Japanese culture. Both spring from the philosophy of Zen and both do a good job of showing its application is a time of constant warfare and personal danger.
A good choice to put the advice of the Zen warriors into perspective is the book Bushido, the Soul of Japan which gives a broader look at the philosophy and its roots. What Zen is all about and how it may be applied in everyday life - how compatible it is with other philosophies and religions - is well presented.
All three of these books have been bound together into one book: The Samurai Series: The Book of Five Rings, Hagakure -The Way of the Samurai & Bushido - The Soul of Japan, which I can recommend without reservation. Together, these three books add up to much more than the sum of the parts. They are truly synergistic.
This guy knows Japanese.......2006-03-16
I've read several versions of this book and William Scott Wilson seems to have the best understanding of the Japanese language and desire to keep it as "word for word" as he can keep it without making the text obscure. I highly recommend this translation. Oh yeah, and this book is highly valuable for philosophers and martial artists alike. Musashi was a genius of both martial arts and life.

Jappleby.......2007-07-15
This book's pages are so thin they rip at almost every turn of the page. The publisher took a stab at trying to keep college students from reselling their books by making this one rip to shreds as they use it. This item has to be put in a three ring binder. Dont buy this version get the bound version.
Excellent Physics 101 book.......2007-01-05
This book was required for one of my college classes. It provides the same information that is taught in high school but in a much better format. I liked this book so much I have kept it for my personal library (and no I'm not some math/physics freak).

I didn't expect it to be hole punched... and NOT binded... so i had to put it in a loose leaf binder... you're just buying a stack of papers...

To learn a Japanese martial art is to learn Zen, and although you can't do so simply by reading a book, it sure does help--especially if that book is The Book of Five Rings. One of Japan's great samurai sword masters penned in decisive, unfaltering terms this certain path to victory, and like Sun Tzu's The Art of War it is applicable not only on the battlefield but also in all forms of competition. Always observant, creating confusion, striking at vulnerabilities--these are some of the basic principles. Going deeper, we find suki, the interval of vulnerability, of indecisiveness, of rest, the briefest but most vital moment to strike. In succinct detail, Miyamoto records ideal postures, blows, and psychological tactics to put the enemy off guard and open the way for attack. Most important of all is Miyamoto's concept of rhythm, how all things are in harmony, and that by working with the rhythm of a situation we can turn it to our advantage with little effort. But like Zen, this requires one task above all else, putting the book down and going out to practice. --Brian Bruya
Book Description
Translated by V. Harris. Japan's answer to the Harvard MBA...Written over three centuries ago by a Samurai warrior, the book has been hailed as a limitless source of psychological insight for businessmen-or anyone who relies on strategy and tactics for outwitting the competition.
Customer Reviews:
Classic........2007-06-18
This book is only a translation of the original. You may not find the extensive commentary you seek. While written centuries ago, Miyamoto Musashi, in my judgment, didn't write a book just about how to fight.
Reading this book with an open mind will surprise the reader. Deep thought and reflection will be needed. The areas to which the principles in this book may be applied (such as lessons in leadership and politics) and the success in said application are only limited to the amount of imagination and study put forth by the reader.
It offers a great deal of knowledge for every day life, and even if you never pick up a sword, or raise your fists, you will find his philosophy extends well beyond the realm of martial arts and battle strategy.
To some readers you will not be able to fully grasp all of the concepts and ideas presented after one reading. This book is invaluable and definitely invites repeated readings as new insight is to be found as your understanding deepens. I'm not sure if a single review could do this book justice because each time you re-read this book your thoughts are guaranteed to be provoked and you will definitely walk away each time with a new form of enlightenment and that is my reason for giving it Five stars *****.
Worthwhile Strategy.......2007-06-10
This is powerful book to read and UTILIZE in your life. While it can easily be taken for face value as a book on physical fighting strategy, it is more than that. One can take many of the thoughts and translate them to a more theoretical use on strategy. For example, a quote speaking of "the gaze" relating to seeing an enemy and their movements: "It is important in strategy to know the enemy's sword and not to be distracted by insignificant movements of his sword". This could easily be translated to business, sports, etc. Just substitute "sword" for the essence of the thought to apply to "business", "army", "team", etc.
The first 3rd of the book is a historical account of events of Musashi's life, and also includes many images of artwork created by Musashi. They are black and white however. The rest of the book is the actual "Book of Five Rings". It consists of 5 "books": ground, water, fire, wind and the void. It is to be noted Musashi after a time found he did not need to follow any particular "Way" and practiced many.
Regarding the layout of the book, I like the footnotes at the bottom of many of the pages which help describe words or thoughts you may not have easily or readily known otherwise.
---*** THE BOTTOM LINE ***---
A good book to have, with worthwhile strategy, although, regarding strategy I prefer Sun Tzu's "Art of War".
Good advice.......2007-01-09
The only good advice I ever got from a book came from this one: "Do nothing which is of no use" (p. 49). The Book of Five Rings has a lot of good advice, but that's the one that speaks most clearly to my condition. The Book of Five Rings must be read as metaphor, because life conditions today are so different from those of medieval Japan. But Mushashi was a wise and powerful thinker, and his ideas apply well beyond battle strategy. He lived integrity: unity and purity of thought, word, and deed, and his rare qualities are always worth studying and emulating.
A study of conflict.......2006-08-14
This book is great for anyone interested in personal development. It is a guide in focused self-discipline. It is also a guide to successful navigation of conflict.
This translation is the best I've read. It is free of superfluous footnotes and pedantic commentary. The commentary that is included before each chapter is brief and helpful.
GREAT 17th CENTURAY SAMURAI SWORDSMAN'S ADVICE ON STRATEGY.......2006-07-22
Based on my readings, Musashi's motive in writing his Book of Five Rings had been to correct misrepresentations of his views on swordsmanship by his contemporaries. Having become a legend in his own time, Musashi's reputation was being exploited by ambitious rivals claiming to have adopted the master's martial techniques and philosophies. Thus Book of Five Rings was intended by its author to establish his point of view for correcting misconceptions.
Those in America who've been advocating since 1974 to study Book of Five Rings to gain some business advantage over Japanese businessmen are barking up the wrong tree. Musashi's writings are poetic and thought provoking. Indeed, one can even learn something new and ancient about strategy from the master. It is, however, doubtful that Musashi's words can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. So then those in the 1970s who had originally marketed the book as "the alternative to the Harvard MBA" were barking up the wrong tree.
In addition to the charming and useful writings, the original (1974 English translation) Book of Five Rings includes photos of the master swordsman's quite beautiful art work, now residing in Japan in a museum dedicated to Musashi works.

I loved this book.......2007-07-09
I actually used this book to put all the recipes into after typing them into some cookbook software (Matilda's Fantastic Cookbook Software). The end product looked great! I'm buying five of these books and am going to give them away to everyone next christmas.
The Family Recipe Collection Book.......2007-05-16
This is one of a very few items I have purchased on the net that I am "more" than satisfied with. I couldn't believe the quality of this book - actually, it is a 3-ring binder. And, I can actually run the pages through my computer printer (my penmanship is very poor). It's wonderful. I was very pleased.

USPC Manual - Beginning Level.......2006-06-27
I am a beginning & intermediate horseback riding instructor in Moscow, ID. I have found the Pony Club Manual for beginners to be a very helpful teaching tool - the illustrations are helpful and well-labeled, and the layout is easy to follow. The information is widely accepted as correct, and the text is well-written for the 10-15 year old ages. I include a manual in the price of all my beginning horse camps for 10-14 year olds.
Pony Club Manual.......2006-03-21
This is the an excellent introduction for anyone interested in horsemanship. It can be studied prior to joining the United States Pony Club or serve as a usful tool in teaching or improving horsemanship for the young or beginning equestrian.
A Must Have For Pony Club Quiz Bowl.......2006-03-16
I couldn't have gotten through Pony Club Quiz Bowl if I didn't have this book. I like the exercises in the book and now I do them on my horse. I learned alot while reading this book, like parts of the tack and how to be safe around horses. I like all the pictures in the book because it helped me to understand what it meant. I would reccommend this book to other pony clubbers and kids who like to ride.
Susan Harris- Multitalented Communicator.......2004-01-23
There is a saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. Susan Harris is not only a gifted artist ; drawing her explanations of concepts she is relating ; she draws pictures with her words, and for anyone lucky enough to attend one of her clinics , she draws explanations with body language. I am fortunate to have Sue as my friend and mentor for 30+ years & have told her often that "She could read the phone book to you & You'd never lose interest". She is also a gifted horsewoman & teacher. She posseses an ability to locate the crux of a lack of understanding & with empathy for both horse & rider guides them to a solution. If I had to limit my horse library to just a few books, her USPC manuels would be the first chosen. They are a wealth of information on all aspects of horsemanship , for every level of horseman , of any age. Her choice of words combined with her own illustrations gives very clear & interesting information.Sue stresses empathy for your horse & safety issues in every topic -2 basics to have ingrained in anyone who wishes to be around horses. I have recommended these books to all who share the "addiction" to horses with me.
very good book to start with.......2004-01-16
I advise anyone young who is seriously interested in horses to start with this book. I've been riding all my life and think this is a great book to start with and it is very informative.

Pay Attention!.......2007-07-20
That seems to be the main message George Alston is giving. Pay attention to your dog, the judge, the ring conditions, and your competition. He gives great advice on how to adjust your stride, the leash, your grooming, etc. to give your dog the best opportunity to win. He also includes wonderful chapters on Psychology and Ring Etiquette, something that can make or break the handler - not just the dog. He shows showing as the art, not just the mechanics.
Must have for a Show Dogs Library.......2007-01-18
When I spoke to my dogs breeder, her comment was that I needed this book. I was happy to tell her I had already ordered and read it! She is a veteran and reads it every Spring before she steps into the Show Ring to brush up on things. I found it to be very helpful as a beginner and I've found it even more helpful after I've been in the ring a couple of times. It leaves out a lot of the "fluff" but is a great companion book to some of the others that start out at the very beginning. Very easy to read. Confidence builder!
