Book Description

AS SEEN ON "THE VIEW"!

The real news of our lives is not in newspapers. We must chronicle our own adventures and achievements, our brilliant observations and our comic relief, our best friends and our greatest embarrassments. Visual Chronicles is all about YOU: your dreams, your memories, your daily routines, your greatest loves and your secret pet peeves. It's all about getting to know yourself better, savoring the wonderful ebb and flow of your everydays, and celebrating it all in visual mementos of your life journey.

Art journaling is fun, cathartic and EASY. Each chapter of Visual Chronicles quiets common fears such as "Nothing happens in my life." or "I'm just not artistic." with projects such as the "My Day Unfolds Journal", and "Experiments with Composition." Inside, you'll learn that journaling doesn't take big chunks of time--just bits and pieces here and there, whenever the spirit strikes. "Get Going" exercises offer instant ideas such as listening to the conversations you have with yourself or recognizing that meaningful ephemera is a part of each and every day. Soon, you'll see that inspiration awaits all around you: a midnight trip to the store, a favorite scarf, an unexpected phone call, junk email, your breakfast plate . . .

Don't wait another second. Make creative journaling a part of your everyday life, busting through self-doubt, time clocks, piles of laundry, and every other roadblock along the way. With Visual Chronicles, you'll be inspired to tell your story the way only you can!

Rosie O'Donnell, The View, October 19, 2006:
"This is the only book you'll ever need, to learn how to scrapbook in a way that is uniquely yours."

RubberStamp Madness Magazine
In this book, plump as plump can be with illustrations, the authors guide you on a whirlwind trek of empowerment.

5 out of 5 stars life changing book.......2007-09-20

Visual Chronicles is a must have book for any crafter or artist. Beginning artists will learn new skills and advanced artists will be re-energized. The authors are lighthearted and funny and the projects are easy to follow. Once you make your own personal palette, you will see everything in life differently. This book is an oasis in a desert of sepia toned craft books by authors who take themselves way too seriously. By the end of this book, you will be an artist and you'll have made two new best friends. Read this book! I can't wait for the next book by these talented sisters.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for new art journalists.......2007-09-13

This was the first book I read when I learned there was such a thing as art journaling. I'm a photographer and not a painter, but I love to work with my hands and with paint and glue and expressing myself on paper. This book showed me from the start that I don't have to be a painter or art student to begin art journaling; it took all the intimidation away and gave me the practical tools and encouragement I needed to begin this new art form for me. The written style of the book is personal and conversational, and I've njoyed reading it, not to mention learning so much, from the first application of the glue stick up.

5 out of 5 stars collage,/mixed media.......2007-09-04

this book was exactly what i was looking for. It explains in simple and easy to understand terms, how to go about jornaling on your collaged books, which can also extend to scrapbooking. An essential guide book for the beginner or advanced mixed media artist and scrapbooker. Definately reccomended

5 out of 5 stars Must Have!.......2007-07-25

If you are new to Visual Journaling, this is a must have book. Wonderful directions for getting started and getting yourself to open up to this unique experience. Even if you don't think of yourself as artistic, this book will pull it out and you'll enjoy the journey.

5 out of 5 stars staying creative in a decidedly uncreative world..........2007-07-25

I have every book on art journaling known to man. Quite a few on regular journaling, too. And a fair bit on paper arts. I might just have a small, tiny book *addiction*. That's neither here nor there.

What IS both here and there is that I lusted after this book before it came out. I think I may have actually scared some people at B&N with the crazy-eyed, wild-haired begging for them to hurry up and get it in. (I'd preordered it here, but it was taking just way too long. Yes, I know they ship the first day. That's beside the point. I'm not so good with instant gratification.)

So when it came in from Amazon, the first thing I did was toss aside the other filler books I bought to get the free shipping and flopped down on the floor with Visual Chronicles.

An hour later, when I came up for air, the first thing I did was prepaint some shoes. SHOES, people! Who woulda thunk of creating a literal *walking journal*? Evidently, Linda and Karen.

From that first set of shoes until now, I keep finding pieces of this book in things that I do, artwise. It's a revolutionary book in a very quiet way -- making you think about both the extraordinary and the everyday. Those little "Have No Fear" quotes (which one reviewer obviously didn't understand to be set-offs for tidbit tips) get repeated in my head when I'm stuck, or needing a dose of inspiration. And the projects, while not my typical style, have been something I've gone back to again and again. (The miniprompt book and the color glossary in particular.) And I definitely didn't find any of it to be condescending -- maybe because I really see the authors (through their writing here) as friends. Highly enthusiastic, you-can-do-it cheerleader friends, wanting to share a little bit of their creative spirits with everyone, rather than hoarding it all for themselves.

Like I said, I've got a shelf full of journaling books. Among those, there are probably a dozen that I refer back to again and again, and Visual Chronicles is one of those. I've never regretted buying it, or keeping it at the ready -- because that inspiration that's so freely given is priceless.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT !!!.......2007-07-22

I almost didn't purchase this book because I have several others on fabric books. Boy, would I have missed out! This books not only has beautiful photography but the examples are unique and the instructions flawless. One of my favorite sections is CHAPTER FOUR: THE GALLERY which shows so many examples of fabric books created by other artists for inspiration. In fact, I was so inspired that I couldn't wait to make a book for a dear friend's birthday using a combination of several different designs. This is not one of those books that you read and then put away. It stays on my studio table and I am already starting my next book. My fabric art library is pretty extensive but this book is by far the best when it comes to creating and embellishing fabric journals and books. I love it!

5 out of 5 stars Create Your Own BEAUTIFUL journals.......2007-04-06

When I ordered this book, I thought it would be one of those books that had a beautiful cover but no real substance. This book is amazing, and I've already learned a lot in the short time I've owned it.

5 out of 5 stars My gold standard for purchasing craft books!.......2006-10-07

This is an exceptionally well written and designed book. I'm impressed with the detailed instructions and accompanying illustrations, the photographs, and the layout. The author even anticipates questions that could come up for the reader/crafter during fabric book construction. I really appreciate this helpful style of writing. The fantastic photographs make it possible to see exactly what is being described. Even the order in which the chapters and sections are presented is well thought out.

This is destined to be one of my most treasured AND used books! In fact, I was inspired to get started as soon as I opened the book for the first time and saw the writer's/artist's work!

5 out of 5 stars My absolute favourite guide to cloth journals.......2006-07-24

Pam Sussman's book covers the most basic design details - for example, page sizing - in a way that makes them interesting and inspirational. She goes on to more complicated, but necessary, techniques such as various edgings and bindings, with a natural, easy to follow progression of ideas and skills.

The book is, as one would expect, lavishly and beautifully illustrated with Sussman's work, but, unlike some other craft books, the illustrations are matched perfectly with the text and the photography displays techniques to perfection.

I have an embarrassingly large number of craft books, and this certainly numbers among the best.

5 out of 5 stars So many ideas, so little time.......2006-04-09

I read this book cover-to-cover and was so enthralled by the illustrations and color photos of finished products that I had to start over again and try to focus on one project at a time. The How-Tos are presented in enough detail to help beginners through a myriad of strange and wonderful terms and tricks.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a great inspiration piece........2007-08-01

Downey has put together a book with some great visuals. Her work is amazing. She has excellent technical info without over-doing it. That said, if you want a more in-depth how-to book you may want to get this one, but keep looking for the technical book binding side of things. It was just what I needed though. I found several journals I want to do, a couple I had been meaning to do, now to find the time. Cute, Informative, Functional, Inspirational...this book has it all.

5 out of 5 stars Cute & fun!.......2007-01-27

Lots of fun and cute ideas in here!
If you consider making your own minialbum - buy this book!
It makes you look at everyday objects in a whole new way - and if you get as inspired as I was, you'll end up with LOTS of pretty new journals.

I really, really like this book and I tend to flip through the pages for inspiration - even when I'm not doing journals, since the designs are SO great!

:)

3 out of 5 stars Different and Creative.......2006-07-09

This is a good book for those who journal. It is different and creative, utilizing many different means by which to make journals beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars YOU HAVE GOT TO HAVE THIS!.......2006-03-27

This book is a MUST HAVE for those who enjoy scrapbooking/paper art and creating unique hand-made gifts....I bought it and immediately created three journals in one day - you will want to try EVERY IDEA IN THE BOOK (and will immediately lust after her other two books!! WRITE MORE, DONNA!! WE LOVE YOUR WORK!) Easy to follow instructions - clean look - the spiral bound style opens flat and the color photos are top notch. Tools/Supplies/Sources are documented for each project - you can't go wrong with these books!! I am an INSTANT FAN!

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-03-22

Okay, so I didn't read the actual blurb, but I wanted a book about ART journals, not about making journals. But, if you are looking for good ideas for cute journals ... this is it. Lovely art work and clear instructions.

1 out of 5 stars Never got it.......2007-01-12

I purchased a few items at one time and this was not in the package I received. I found out 24 hours later it would be delivered separately. Then found out 24 hours after that - it was no longer available. Be careful - they may not have it and you might not find out until later.

5 out of 5 stars Spelling of stationery.......2004-12-07

Letters and such should be spelled stationery not stationary (which means "not moving")

4 out of 5 stars Pretty.......2004-06-10

I got this stationery set to give some variety to my mail which had started to look stale. I admit the antique French look this set goes for is nice and it gives it a warm, not-too-girly vibe.

The colors and patterns don't match exactly so it really is a question of you doing the mixing & matching. It always looks good (unless you're purist about that kind of perfection thing in which case, this is not the set for you). Also, I liked that the paper is a good quality and the ivory color looks distinguished and good. The box is great and very elegant and has started to hold some of my treasured letters.

The only complaint? I'm into writing long letters (as I'm sure a lot of people who own this are) so 30 sheets and 30 envelopes will just leave me with a lot of envelopes left over long after I use up all the sheets. I'm starting to reserve this for my short letters (almost nonexistent) and thus, this set isn't getting all the use it could.

Manufacturers, more sheets than envelopes next time please!

1 out of 5 stars lettres stationary.......2003-07-21

I was very disapointed with this stationary. They make it seem so much better online. DO NOT GET THIS, IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY!!
So now I have warned you.
bye

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2003-05-17

This is some of the best stationary that I have ever seen before. With different styles to mix and match, it's perfect to take up that 'old' way of communicating with people by snail mail again.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A readable and useful book for journal writers.......2006-01-17

I've read and am reading several books on journal writing, having decided to take on that task in earnest. Often these books are heavily into a kind of exploratory self-analysis of the psychological sort as an aid to figuring out one's personal issues. They can also be lengthy and involved.

But Hannah Hinchman's book is readable, delightfully brief and nicely illustrated with her art work. It covers the field sufficiently but not exhaustively, and provides enough examples from accomplished journalists to give the newcomer models he or she needs to get going in the right direction. And there is constant helpful and practical advice. I find myself going back to it over and over again to remind myself of the fine points of her wise guidance.

If you're new or fairly new to the journal-writing endeavor, I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars New ideas for the artist/journalist.......2006-01-17

Life in Hand is not one of those lavishly illustrated picture books (though there are many drawings and paintings to see.) Instead, this is a guide to bringing together your observations, thoughts and artistics skills. Hannah Hinchman shows us excerpts of her drawing and watercolor journals and gives the reader an idea of how she sorts through a landscape scene to document it in drawing.

The best part of the book is in the back. Hinchman's watercolors are clear, beautifully colored and have captions that run along the contours of the drawing--creating not just commentary but an extension to the picture. Some of the captions were drawn with white wax pencil or frisket and then overwashed with color, creating a framed text. Very nice technique, and something every scrapbooker or journalist will profit by looking at.

4 out of 5 stars Illuminate your journals.......2005-03-25

I had the pleasure of taking a workshop with Hannah in Grand Teton NP, and her love for capturing the beauty of nature is evident in her journals. Illuminating her pages with detailed sketches, her skill at calligraphy and her love of writing will delight other journal keepers and nature lovers. Would have been nice to have had it all in color, but a good read for sketchbook & journalists.

5 out of 5 stars Two Books to Encourage Creativity.......2004-08-01

Sky a relaxed blue. Snow shadows have more violet than sky does. At the unfocussed edge of the shadow, an orange penumbra. ~February 1989

A Life in Hand is a book set designed to encourage your creativity. Both books have beautiful covers and the second book is filled with blank pages.

Hannah Hinchman lives in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where she works as a freelance artist, illustrator, graphic designer, calligrapher, writer and teacher. Her work has appeared in Sisters of the Earth and in Sierra magazine. She now teaches field journal workshops for the Yellowstone Institute. All the drawings in the instruction booklet were taken from Hannah's journals. The last section of this book is filled with Watercolor art and Hannah's calligraphy.

Hannah encourages everyone to begin a journal, no matter what your age or life experience. She explores the magic of journal keeping and brings a new perspective to letter writing. She enjoys word play and stream-of-consciousness writing.

If you want to start a journal, this book set may inspire you and give you ideas for illustrating your observations about life.

I bought this cool quilting journal and am having a ball taking pictures of my latest quilts and writing down all the details of how I made them and even put swatches of the fabric. It is a very neat thing. I love mine and want to give them for gifts at Christmas to my small group. I have seen a lot of journals but this one is the best I have seen so far. It has it all and more. Check it out and see for yourself if I am not right about this really neat little book of memories. Try it and you will want to start one and get one for each of your quilting buddies. Go for it!

        Book Description

This latest volume of the groundbreaking Journal of Decorative and Propaganda Arts explores the material, social, and cultural world of the large American hotel. Ten richly illustrated essays look at the architects, designers, and social forces that created this distinctive and complex urban institution, from Gilded Age New York to 1950s Miami Beach.

Broadly imagined and yet cohesively focused, the essays examine such major historical processes as consumption and modernism, and race, class, and gender. Topics include the lavish New York apartment hotels of Schultze and Weaver (the architects of the Waldorf-Astoria); the connection between hotels and mansions in the "rich man's city" of Gilded Age New York; the "bodacious" interior designs of Dorothy Draper; the flamboyant Miami Beach fantasies of Morris Lapidus; Henry Flagler's St. Augustine resorts; Atlantic City's old Traymore hotel; the social world of hotel chambermaids and clerks; the parallel world of African-American "pleasure travelers"; the trend toward efficiency and standardization; and the capitalist narrative of early-twentieth-century urban hotel demolitions.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Way To See Yourself.......2004-06-24

What a great self-guided journal. This book is filled with writing prompts about yourself, your body, your relationships, your solitude, your past, your world views, your nature affiliation and finally your life goals. Most of the prompts offer just enough space to write something profound without rambling on and on. A fantastic book to fill in and leave for your family should anything happen to you. So spend some time getting to know yourself and leave a trace of your existence along the way.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource For Self Knowledge.......2002-01-22

This wonderful journal is a gret resource for learning about yourself. It is more detailed than most, requiring its reader to participate in focusing inward. Its extensive questions can lead to expanding self-awareness and self knowledge. I heartily recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Yourself and Recovery.......2000-12-23

I found this book an extremely usefull guide in discovering myself in recovery. It brings you along on a self guided journey of discovery of your true soul, enabling you to have a more satisfying and intimate relationship with both your self, and perhaps for the first time, others. For me, this book was a valuble tool towards developing and completing a searching and fearless moral inventory.
