5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-08-30

One of the best quilting books I've purchased. There are so many quilts that I want to make from this book. This one is worth the money. I've referred back to it often.

4 out of 5 stars Generally good, but...........2007-03-07

I had made 4 quilts before making one from this book, so I would describe myself as between a novice and an intermediate-level quilter. Even though I have some experience,
1) I am disappointed that the instructions are not more detailed (e.g., "assemble the blocks as shown on page such and such"). I can figure it out, but it would be nice if the instructions were more specific.
2) I also find that I don't sew well enough to profit from the shortcut techniques they reccomend at the beginning of the book. My pieces do not match up well when I use those techniques, so I find myself resorting back to the way I used to construct these pieces.
3) I only like a handful of the quilts in the book. However, I am constructing one that I am very pleased with, so I guess it's a matter of personal taste.

In general, I think this book has a nice assortment of quilts, most of which don't seem terribly difficult to make. I'm glad I have this among my quilting books.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for any Quilter.......2007-01-09

This is THE book for any quilter .. beginner or experienced sewer. Beautiful quilts and complete instructions. A MUST HAVE for any quilter's library.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best quilting book in my collection.......2006-02-13

True to its promise, this book shows off more than a hundred quilts which are designed for rotary cutters. You'll find a wide range of sizes and styles, from wall quilts to full bed quilts, and from traditional blocks to... well, traditional block variations. None of them are clinkers.

Many quilting books have designs that are all in one mood, even if they don't advertise themselves as such: very floral, or heavy on the "country," etc. Among the many things I like about 101 Fabulous Rotary-Cut Quilts is that it avoids this trap. You'll find everything from pastels to Amish designs to pinwheels. And, while plenty of the designs are scrap quilts, lots of them are NOT. (I'm a little tired of instructions that call for 1/8 yard from 32 different fabrics. Can I please make a quilt that uses only 3 or 4 fabrics?! But the point is that, even if you feel differently, you'll be as happy with the selection as I will.)

Plus, this book has some of the best quality instructions I've encountered. In most cases, the instructions all fit on one page, and they are blessedly straightforward.

The authors also recognize that not every quilter gets it right the first time; for example, the "Louisiana" wall quilt I'm just finishing advises, "Your blocks may not measure exactly 8.5 inches square when sewn. Cut this strip a little wider, and trim the sashing pieces to size after you piece the blocks, if you wish." I sure appreciate it when a book tells me how to fix the mistakes I'm most likely to make! (And why yes, I *did* trim the blocks afterward.)

One additional feature in this book that is much appreciated is the avoidance of the phrase, "Quilt as desired." I often feel that I need guidance on appropriate quilting patterns as much as I do on the piecing design. Fortunately, the book has a section with suggestions for each quilt. I'd never have thought up the one they suggested, and I'm glad I took their advice. It looks great.

I need to make a wedding quilt for my niece. There's no question which book I'll turn to first, when it comes to picking a design for such a big project.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book For Quilting.......2004-09-13

Of all the books I own (and there are a lot), this one is the one I bring to bed, every night! It has so much information to learn, it's a page turner! This book is THE book to own and no library is complete, without it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars For the foundation paper-piecer.......2006-10-24

With full-sized paper piecing patterns, lots of log cabin designs, and color photographs of completed blocks, this book is perfect for those who like paper-piecing log cabin blocks. I haven't seen another book that fits all of these criteria.

5 out of 5 stars out with traditional, in with variety.......2000-05-28

Quilting designs in a large variety of variations with some traditional ones included all with great color samples. Included with the full size templates are shaded greys of the pattern for ease in chosing your own masterpiece. Twisting and twirling the log shapes gives some spectacular results. An easy method for piecing tops it off. Now I have to decide which one to try first. The way it's layed out makes each block a very do-able project. Good for beginners as well as the pros.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars 101 Patchwork Patterns.......2007-05-14

I am new to quilting and am looking for books that will help me get started. I need clear and detailed instructions. This book is one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Book for Traditional Quilting.......2004-06-10

This book gives you accurate traditional patterns -- that is, you make templates and cut each piece separately, and then sew them all together into blocks. There is an excellent variety of patterns, and many are not well-known nowadays, so the experienced quilter need not fear that there will be nothing new to enjoy. At the same time, there is sufficient information for the absolute beginner.
This book is from 1931, so of course it is not up-to-date. There is no mention of modern time-saving methods, and there is a certain quaintness to the text and pictures (maids in caps hold up the quilts, and the swastika pattern is presented with no self-consciousness). However, those who like the quilts of the early 20th century will value not only the patterns but also the color suggestions, which allow the quilter to make perfect retro quilts.
And there is simply no better quilt book for the price.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Quilting books ever assembled.......1998-04-18

This Dover reprint of the classic quilting book by Ruby McKim is one of the best quilting books ever written. The book describes 101 block patterns in both patchwork and applique as well as two embroidered blocks. Scattered among the patterns are eight short, well-written chapters describing how to piece, quilt and applique. Originally written in the late 1920's and early 1930's the instructions are as good as ever and Ms. McKim's writing clear and pleasant. This is an absolute steal at this price. Another gem from Dover.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2004-08-30

Not as impressed as I thought. This has some very nice examples in it, but no way of knowing how much fabric, how to cut and piece together. Very self explanitory. I was looking for something a bit more definitive for putting the blocks together.

3 out of 5 stars Lovely to look at..........2004-06-10

I agree with many of the reviewers - I found it very difficult to work with the patterns (tracing, no seam allowances, no light/dark suggestions) and the instructions were a tad confusing. I haven't put together any quilts from this book. However, it's a great book to look at and dream.

1 out of 5 stars Not really worth the space it takes........2002-04-04

What a waste. This was one of the first quilt books I bought and I guess I was looking more for an encyclopedia or how-to for a number of basic blocks. This is NEITHER.

I also felt cheated about the number of blocks promised. They've thrown in a lot of very simple applique blocks to get to the 101.
I have since gotten Barbra Brackman's Block base program and that is a true encyclopedia. There are many rotary cutting or other technique books that would be so much better than this for actual block or quilt making. This has no cutting or assembly suggestions.

4 out of 5 stars A great motivator........2001-04-18

This book is a really great motivator. I am a novice at quilting : I am currently on my fifth one. Most of the quilts I have done were pretty simple designs and this book challenged me with more complex patterns. It has inspired me to create some interesting variations. I admit that the instructions are a bit confusing, but overall I think everyone can benefit from it. The blocks vary from very simple to complex. From beginners to experts, this one has something for us all......

3 out of 5 stars Great Eye Candy - But Not For Beginners.......2000-11-01

This is a large hardcover book with the pages spiral bound inside the cover so that the pages lay completely flat when the book is open. The big appeal of this book is played up in the title - the patterns are full size and can easily be traced onto plastic suitable for making templates. On the left side is a description of the block, sample images made up in two different color schemes, and the piecing instructions. The right hand page is the line drawing of the block with all of the pieces illustrated. In the beginning of each chapter, there are illustrations of sample projects that are very creative and attractive. My favorite section is the one on pieced borders. They seem like they would be a lot of work, but there are some beautiful patterns.

The book is beautifully illustrated and wonderful to look at, but it is only really usable for more experienced quilters. I would definitely steer a beginner away from this one. The piecing is very complicated on some of these patterns and there are no guidelines to help determine what the complexity level is on individual patterns. The piecing instructions are sparse and somewhat confusing. There is no discussion of fabric needs or advice on color arrangement, the only help being the visual illustrations. For a quilter with experience making templates and doing complicated piecing, this book has some wonderful blocks to play around with. I was looking at some of the blocks and thinking that they would be much easier to put together with the foundation piecing method and this would cut out some of the work having to make templates.

If you have been quilting awhile and enjoy a challenge, add it to your wish list.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 101 Patchwork Potholders by Lince Causee.......2006-08-20

This is a wonderful book that even a beginner can enjoy. All 101 potholders in the book can be made with ten pieces and all finish about eight inches. Some of the designs look very complicated but indeed are not!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of great, simple patterns!.......2005-07-02

Although the templates given make 8" finished blocks, most of these patterns are easy to convert to other sizes. I have made many of them into 6" and 12" finished blocks, and they turn out really well. This is a "must have" book if you participate in a lot of block exchanges.

5 out of 5 stars This book makes it easy to learn the basics of quilting!.......1999-06-09

The cutting and sewing instructions are very clear and easy to follow for rotary cutting and machine or hand piecing. The potholder designs are beautiful and fun to do. I recommend this book for beginning quilters.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Modern Art versus Impressionism..........2003-05-30

Judy Murrah is a very talented lady. Her book received great reviews which is why I purchased it. However, her personal style is not what I look for in design and embellishing. Her work is very contemporary, and I tend to be much more of a traditionist in design and embellishment. I prefer needlework designs that date as far back as Medieval times. I like order, and I love needle-art to be so beautifully done that one may even frame it as a piece of art.

    J. Marsha Michler wrote "The Magic of Crazy Quilting: A Complete Resource for Embellished Quilting." Her approach to design and embellishment is much closer to what I prefer in my own work, and her designs can be nicely applied to clothing and other projects as well--not crazy quilting alone. She very clearly illustrates stitching and embellishing techniques, including high quality photo close-ups, making it very easy even for the novice.

Another wonderful book that I have found both exciting and artistic is "The Art of Manipulating Fabric" by Colette Wolff. Using your own artistic imagination, both these books can offer any design or look you desire, and both have a much more "serious" presentation of design.

If you like a contemporary look to design, then Judy Murrah's "Jazz it Up..." is for you. She gives clear illustrations and close-up high quality photos for examples to follow. Her ideas and designs can be done by even the novice.

    Happy sewing!

5 out of 5 stars I am all jazzed up!.......2002-11-11

Judy has written many "Jazz" books that you can now find on the Internet auctions going for big bucks because they are out of print. I happen to have all her books, thanks to a good friend, and feel this one sums up all her shared knowledge of wearable art stitching and embellishing. The first wearable project I made was adapted from one of Judy's' first books. I consider her work as laying the foundation for all wearable artists out in the world today. These 101 techniques can be used on a simple cuff or on your whole project.

5 out of 5 stars Wearable Art for the Practical Person.......1999-03-03

This is the book we have been waiting for from Judy. She mentioned it was in the works two years ago and I have been eagerly looking forward to it. As with all of Judy's books, the directions are clear and there are marvelous graphics for all of the techniques she presents. You are given lots of ideas with photos of finished goods. This book will give you the confidence to make that one of a kind vest or jacket. The hardest part is deciding what techniques to start with on your creation!

If you are thinking of just trimming the edge of a jacket or making a whole wardrobe this is the how-to idea book for you.

Time to Quilt not only shows you how to plan a quilt retreat with your quilting friends, but offers resourceful solutions to make more time to quilt at home without feeling guilty. I followed the books advise and scheduled time for my quilting by putting it on the calendar, planning ahead to have the kids and husband busy with their own activities out of the house. Then I indulged on my pleasurable project in good conscience.

Time to Quilt has a wide variety of quilt designs and projects from large to small, with suggestions on what to do with leftover blocks too! My favorite is the playful ice skate table runner as the quilting makes a "figure 8". Can't wait to make the footwarmer soon.

Everything about the book is beautiful: the photography, graphics, friendly writing style. The book has a positive, open feeling to it. Really clear and easy to follow instructions with good illustrations. Terrific tips on basic skills as well as how to put a group quilt together when blocks are not quite the same size.

The book has recipes peppered throughtout. My favorites are the mix-in cookies and Scrapsoup. For the Pollo con Salsa recipe, you don't even need to defrost the chicken. It was so easy, it gave me more time to quilt!

Tips on assembly and quick production make for a practical guide especially appealing to newcomers.

4 out of 5 stars Paper piece some beautiful flowers :).......2003-11-06

The book contains 101 beautiful flower blocks, and instructions for 3 projects using these blocks. All blocks and projects are shown in full color.

I'm not a beginner paper (foundation) piecer so I didn't pay all that much attention to the directions at the beginning of the book, although at a quick glance, they do look quite detailed and well thought out, and there are lots of "how-to" drawings.

Block size is NOT shown on the individual patterns. The block sizes are listed in the General Directions at the beginning of the book. [I think they should be listed on each block - my memory isn't what it used to be]. The color photograph of the block is not on the same page as the pattern, so you need to refer back and forth for color placement. There is a "grey tones" drawing for each pattern, but I don't find that very helpful - it should be in color (either a drawing or a photograph). Multi-piece patterns are NOT separated, and I find the bold lines (separating the pieces) hard to distinguish from the piecing lines. Seam allowances are also not included. Personally, I find it annoying to have to photocopy the pattern, then cut it apart and add (or account for when sewing) the seam allowance. Lots of people don't mind, tho, so I might be in the minority :). The assembly directions for multi-piece patterns are clearly diagrammed.

I like my patterns to be done a certain way, and in this book, they are not. However, I still love the book because the patterns and projects are gorgeous, and shown in full color. The patterns range from fairly simple to extremely detailed, so there is something for most skill ranges. If you like florals and you like paper (foundation) piecing, I think you'll enjoy the projects in this lovely book :)
