Book Description

With designers constantly working for clients and having a limited amount of freedom in much of their work, the chance to strike out on their own and do something truly original and personal is a real luxury. The cards included represent some of the most creative design available so are a wonderful source of inspiration for all types of projects. All designers and design firms, whether in-house or freelance, create their own greeting cards which serve not only as a greeting card, but as an opportunity to show off their work in a totally unique and uninhibited light. In addition, they are the perfect project because they are small enough so they are not incredibly time consuming nor are they very expensive to produce -- even with unique materials or treatments.

2 out of 5 stars A full color collection of thumbnail images - Umm... Yay?.......2007-08-04

I have a lot of problems with this book.

The first being that while the designs are split into categories such as "brand identity", "invitations" and "self branding" (among others) the individual pieces have virtually no information given on their purpose or use. It would be very helpful to know standard information like the target audience or main goals attributed to the selected works shown. It isn't enough to simply lump sum all this work into a category and offer no explanation on demographics or psychographics. A directory at the end of the book lists who designed the work, but that's really all you get.

The second thing that irked me is that the pictures are very small. Each page may have half a dozen or more pieces shown but no detail shots of any. This further adds to my first complaint. The viewer can't even deduce for themselves what most of the work was intended for since the images are so small. Some of the photography is very lovely and truly works to show off the best qualities of the selected pieces but without detailed shots or full page displays the viewer is left unsatisfied.

While all the designs shown are very good, many are based off of common ideas. Lots of Pseudo-Asian, lots of decomposed and grunge. While they're attractive, they're not particularly inspiring.

Over all I think this book would do more good in the hands of a craft minded individual and not a designer. I can see many of the invitations lending themselves well to home projects and offering some inspiration for personal correspondence stationery.

An acceptable coffee table book, but not a design tool.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-03-09

Love this book. It's jam-packed with inspirational greetings that can be applied to all types of graphic design projects. I plan on buying their other 1000 series in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book ever.......2007-02-22

I bought this book and used it everyday until I lost it. I felt completely off base without it for several months until I couldn't take it anymore and purchased it AGAIN! I absolutely love 1000 greetings and recommend it to everyone.

2 out of 5 stars Who is this for?.......2007-01-31

Not enough details for inspiration. They say a picture is worth 1,000 words, not in this case. Maybe if they would have given us a quick paragraph about the piece, (how, who, what, . . .etc). I'm sure the designers would've loved this. Were they even asked?

2 out of 5 stars A lot of fluff, not a lot of detail.......2007-01-19

While this book is filled with 1000 different images, you don't get any details. What does the card look like when opened? What type of client was this project done for? Also, the images are incredibly small so you can't read any of the copy, which for some of the designs, is critical to their success. I wouldn't have bought this book had I been browsing in a store and been able to see it first.

Whether you seek protocol on accepting a formal invitation, turning down a job offer, challenging your credit record, writing a condolence letter, or penning a collection letter, How to Write It can help. With precision and humor, Sandra E. Lamb provides reliable guidance on all forms of written correspondence; for each type of communication, she considers such issues as content, wrong messages (how to eliminate them), format, effective writing, and editing. What in other hands might have been a dry reference manual takes on its own personality in the hands of this competent stylist. Lamb's advice for writing a memo, for instance, includes "Don't use an autocratic tone," "Don't assign blame," "Don't whine," "Don't pad," "Don't hedge," and "Don't use officious, stuffy, or formal words." Lamb is part etiquette adviser and part good-business guru. Perhaps her guide's most important message is that the general decline of written communication both socially and in business actually benefits those who still rely on it, as its impact is even greater than it once was. --Jane Steinberg

Book Description

Even the simplest notes can trigger procrastination, deliberation, and frustration in all of us. Thankfully, writing expert Sandra Lamb is here to provide tips for writing virtually all communications: emails, resumes, thank-you notes, collection letters, grant proposals, letters of complaint, press releases, and much more.

5 out of 5 stars How to Write It.......2007-09-17

I wish I had this book a long, long time ago. It really does cover all my writing needs.

5 out of 5 stars How to Write It: A Complete Guide to Everything You'll Ever Write.......2007-03-27

For an underlying idea of how to approach the different kinds of everyday writing, this book has it all. I would not suggest copying letters word for word; however, there are focused phrases which apply to all situations and act as an inspiration for one's very own personalized letter. At the very least, this book demonstrates how to write with the appropriate tone, how to approach a topic and express succinct thoughts with grace and manners. This book makes a writer out of everyone.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2005-04-05

This book is not bad but could have been better. There is a distinct tendency for the author to be repetitive and each example letter is shown in full, which results in a lot of (wasted) white space on the pages. Also, in my opinion, the book itself has been put together relatively cheaply; it's reminiscent of a large mass-market paperback. I prefer 'How to say it' by Rosalie Maggio which covers most of the same ground.

4 out of 5 stars Useful.......2004-10-08

A lot of this stuff is already known to me, but this book is still beneficial to the average person who may forget the title format, etc. It's almost like a huge cheat sheet! The cover letter chapter and the magazine proposal chapter were the best and most useful for me. The organization and layout of this book are dynamite. Great job!

3 out of 5 stars Errors.......2003-11-15

While a great reference, this book has many typographical and gramerical errors. It also is not categorized properly and reiterates the same facts over and over. It does however have great pointers on what to say in a letter. However its view is too simplistic for business writing. I would not suggest this book for a professional opinion. I would suggest it however for a day to day reference on personal letters.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-01-09

I had to buy this book as part of a college course curriculum.

This is a great book for someone who is looking to beef up their business writing skills. I really like it as a 'reference' manual. It shows examples of how to write and communicate in the business world, basically what to and what not to say and do.

It is also easy to read and understand, which is a big plus for an educational literary work.

3 out of 5 stars Naval writing guide.......2007-06-08

Good information but, it is a little out dated. It is still a must have for SNCO's and Officer's personal libraries.

5 out of 5 stars Somewhat dated, but still very useful.......2006-01-06

I have owned and used this book since I joined the Navy. It has been an invaluable asset when writing evals, award, Fit-Reps, and correspondence. While some of the formats in the book are outdated, the advice and examples are great. I have found it best to use the Navy instruction to determine the proper way to fill out any form (eval, fit-rep, etc) and this book to determine the "best" way to say something. This book has been passed around every command where I have served and is a useful tool for those just beginning to do Navy paperwork. I think it would make a great gift for that new Ensign, First Class, or Chief.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Reference for Sailors, a Useful Reference for Every One Else.......2005-10-01

The Guide to Naval Writing is geared toward the Navy and the Navy's formats for writing different documents. However, if your job requires you to produce and deliver letters, memos, instructions, speeches, briefs, technical studies, and articles for various media then this book might be useful for you as well. As a career Navy Officer, I have used this book more times than I can count.

In the interest of full disclosure, many of the examples are real documents regarding real people (with the names changed for privacy) and this reviewer knows at least two of those individuals personally.

This book can be read end-to-end or used as needed to aid in individual projects. The book is organized into twelve chapters each, except for the introduction, addressing a unique writing requirement. Those are: Letters, Memos, and Directives; Staff Writing; Naval Messages; Performance Evaluations; Awards and Commendations; Speaking and Briefing; Technical Reports, Executive Summaries, and Abstracts; JAG Manual Investigations; Writing for the News Media; The Professional Article; and a handbook for style and format in naval writing.

Each of these is superb. However, the material is becoming somewhat dated, especially the evaluations section. There have been numerous changes since the "new" evaluation system came out in 1996. One should use that section with caution. It would be great if the author or the Naval Institute came out with a new edition of this book to reflect some of the incremental changes to naval correspondence.

If you are not in the Navy, this is still a useful book. The handbook chapter is useful as well as the tips on point papers, briefings, trip reports, and writing for the press that would be applicable for almost any other job that involves writing. It is easy to imagine one using this book to get an idea of how to frame and format a topic for any of the above mentioned requirements.

This book is a must read for those in the Navy. If you have a son or daughter who is going to be commissioned soon, this book should be on their bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Superb manual, a must for Navy-Marine officers.......2002-02-06

My Group CO bought this manual for all of his subordinate commands. I received one of the twenty copies and use it almost once a week to assist me with my correspondence duties. It addresses almost everything imaginable from fitness reports to letters to promotion boards and award citations to letters of extra military instruction. Although the Department of the Navy has put out a correspondence manual, it is not in as much detail and does not provide as good examples like the Guide to Naval Writing is. If you plan on being a successful officer, you will have to learn to communicate effectively. Although this book cannot do everything for you, it will get you leaps and bounds ahead of most other officers. Semper Fidelis

4 out of 5 stars Very good reference book.......2000-03-30

This is a very good reference book for most types of formal writing, including directives, point papers, award justifications, etc. This is even used in many leadership classes. I keep this very close to my desk. The evaluation and fitrep information is some of the most current available, which isn't very common with this rapidly changing system. If you do any type of formal writing at all, this book is absolutely required.

Book Description

Award-winning novelist Samuel R. Delany has written a book for creative writers to place alongside E. M. Forster's Aspects of the Novel and Lajos Egri's Art of Dramatic Writing. Taking up specifics (When do flashbacks work, and when should you avoid them? How do you make characters both vivid and sympathetic?) and generalities (How are novels structured? How do writers establish serious literary reputations today?), Delany also examines the condition of the contemporary creative writer and how it differs from that of the writer in the years of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and the high Modernists. Like a private writing tutorial, About Writing treats each topic with clarity and insight. Here is an indispensable companion for serious writers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended to all literature enthusiasts, readers, writers, and students.......2006-04-04

About Writing: Seven Essays, Four Letters, And Five Interviews by literary critic, writers workshop teacher, and world renowned science fiction author Samuel R Delany (Professor of English and Creative Writing, Temple University, Philadelphia) is an informed and informative study of the expertise necessary for a writer in any genre to become more organized, more knowledgeable, and more effective with the ultimate goal of profitable publication. As an analysis of modern and contemporary writing styles, About Writing informs the aspiring author of the ins and outs of technique, ideals, and styles for the most effective writing. About Writing is very strongly recommended to all literature enthusiasts, readers, writers, and students.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing, difficult, worth it writing book.......2006-03-07

I had the pleasure of reading this book before it reached the final draft. I have found the book almost as valuable as the teaching I recieved from the man himself. Though this is not a book for the light reader, if you give it time Delany will reveal many truths about writing and writers. Yes, it's academic, because this book is aimed at those who seek to become writers, and that is as much an academic pursuit as an artistic one. Delany won't coddle you and won't give you feel good platitudes about what it takes to be a writer. What he will give you is a solid basis for starting a writing career. It's not a pretty road to travel, and certainly not an easy one. This is an excellent roadmap.

1 out of 5 stars Wind without fire.......2006-02-15

Frankly, I found this deeply disappointing. I read a few of Delany's books a few years ago and liked them for their full-on romanticism, their vision and enthusiasm. But these essays are fundamentally dull. Maybe it's their subjects. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone but Dr Dryasdust and his colleagues. How did this fine Romantic become such a dreary academic ?

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, astringent, yet leavened with a generous humanity........2006-01-13

Delany has one of the most penetrating minds of anyone writing in English. This book should be a first resource for anyone considering writing novels--Delany discusses it as the serious pursuit that it is. I find myself reconsidering many aspects of my own writing, and not always comfortably. I'll be a better writer for it.

The modern conundrum: while the art of letter writing is fast extinguishing, the need for expressive, impressive, appropriate letters is as great as ever. The result? A mortifying amount of miserable missives that sadly miss the mark. E-mail informality is all very well for one's sister in Toledo or one's colleague three cubicles down, but when one needs to promote a product or raise funds, seek a job or request a favor, effectively complain, apologize, or reprimand, or send a letter of condolence, the typically confident and competent achiever gets noodly in the knees. Write a thank-you letter? The prospective correspondent is suddenly busy cleaning his or her desk and organizing the office files.

All you really need is a template to show you the way, and that's where Harold Meyer's Lifetime Encyclopedia of Letters excels. There are 981 letters covering most every business or personal occasion, organized in 600 categories, and followed by a comprehensive index. From Declining Requests (subdivided into "Invitations," "Applications for Credit," and "Donations," among others) and Requesting Favors to Sympathy, Apology, and Thank-You notes, Meyer shows an array of approaches, discusses effective techniques for various intended results, and instructs you on which tone to pursue, depending on whom the letter is going to and what you're trying to achieve. The encyclopedia won't actually write the letter for you or affix the stamp, but it provides proven formats to help structure your thoughts, and smooth starter and closer sentences--typically the hardest to write--to jump-start your communication and end with style. --Stephanie Gold

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lifetime Encyclopedia Of Letters.......2006-12-24

I am a proud owner of this book and recently ordered one second hand on Amazon for a girlfriend of mine, whom I got tired of writing letters for. I have recommended it to many friends who assume I'am a certified paralegal because of my letter writing skills. this book is a must have for anyone who needs to learn how to formulate a letter correctly.

    3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2005-03-06

This book is mediocre. I'd expect a book on "letter writing" to provide examples of unusual and creative letters; letters that would catch and leave a fresh impression on the reader, but it's not the case.
The professional section is OK, even though the letters are boring, dull, and predictable. The personal section is simply dreadful: tactless and unimaginative. Letters of sympathy and condolences are some of the worse ones.
I'd not have bought it if I'd have taken a closer look at it.
If you're already a good letter-writer, then this book is a good tool to provoke your OWN writing. If you're not, look for another guide.

1 out of 5 stars For a small business owner not the average consumer..........2003-11-27

I purchased this book thinking that the author provided a voice to capture my thoughts when dealing with merchants. Why I ever doubted my ability to write my experience with a product or services, I do not know.

I agree that this book provides a template. If you use a Wordprocessing software application it already comes with one.

I would not recommed this as a purchase for the average consumer.
This book is written more for the small business owner, who for example, is attempting to collect bad debts or negotiating for better pricing on business services.

5 out of 5 stars As a template, THE BOOK is very useful.......2003-06-26

The Lifetime Encyclopedia of Letters has come in handy for me on several occasions (both business and personal). The book itself is broken down into categories, and within these are outlines, models, indexes, open/closing sentences, and example letters for each category.

The "How To Do It" outline provides you with a step-by-step process for each letter. This helps to keep your letter focused. The explanations in the outline is brief, and somewhat vague, but if you follow through with the model letter, you can see what direction your letter would take.

There are also suggestions for opening and closing sentences. This will help jog your inspiration. I never used any of the suggested sentences, but it did give me a clear idea of how I should open and close my letters. Many times, hesitation has been a result of not knowing how to start... this book helped solve that problem for me.

The best feature of this book is the variety of letters. Some are more aggressive than others, and this can be tailored to what you are trying to "sell" or say. The contrasts in letter presentation gives you a chance to choose the most appropriate letter for those who will read it.

The personal letter section is useful for the more "delicate" correspondence (compliments, reprimand, gifts, etc...). This book guided me with proper etiquette through some very nerve-wracking letters. It also provided me with the confidence to write more letters for appropriate situations. I have actually received compliments from letter receivers!

This book is meant to be used throughout your lifetime, for business and personal uses. My copy is pretty old, and I still use it. The letters I write using the encyclopedia are absolutely my own. Because I view this book as a template of standards, I merely adapt it to suit my own personal style and needs. I recommend it to anyone who needs to write a letter and wants to do it right with the best results.

    4 out of 5 stars A Good Reference Item.......2001-12-14

I'm confused by the previous reviews. It seems like the objections are to the CD-ROM...our copy didn't come with one. I work in a library, and when I have trouble writing a letter or more often coming up with wording for a condolence card (I'm hopeless at this) I run to the stacks for this book! I find it most useful for appropriate ideas not necessarily a complete letter. If I don't find the subject matter I need I plunder other letters for the right words...sometimes just a sentence can get me started. I've recommended this book to other staff members who have found useful information in it. I just ordered a copy for our professional reference collection!!! This book is a great resource, but perhaps not the answer to ALL letter writing ills.
