"I cannot draw you a picture of Peter and Benjamin underneath the basket," writes Beatrix Potter in The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, "because it was quite dark, and because the smell of onions was fearful; it made Peter Rabbit and little Benjamin cry." Beatrix Potter's animal stories, the first of which was published in 1902, have been a joy to generations of young readers. This deluxe volume collects all of Beatrix Potter's 23 Peter Rabbit tales and verses together--complete and unabridged--in one book. All the original illustrations, both color and black and white, are included. The stories are arranged in the order in which they were first published to enable them to be read in the proper sequence, from A Tale of Peter Rabbit to The Tale of Little Pig Robinson. Beatrix Potter's tales were often connected with real places, people, or animals, so each story also includes a brief introductory note about its history. For example, "The story of naughty Peter Rabbit in Mr. McGregor's garden first appeared in a picture letter Beatrix Potter wrote to Noel Moore, the young son of her former governess, in 1893." In addition to the original 23 tales, this edition contains two early narrative picture sequences, Three Little Mice and The Rabbit's Christmas Party. And, there are two charming little stories, The Sly Old Cat and The Fox and the Stork, which were originally intended to be worked up into books, but remained unpublished. This beautiful introduction to the world of Beatrix Potter is sure to remain on the family bookshelf for generations to come. (Baby to Preschool)

    Book Description

"It spoils people's clothes to squeeze under a gate; the proper way to get in, is to climb down a pear tree," said Little Benjamin Bunny. Hear Peter Rabbit outwit old Mr. McGregor and Squirrel Nutkin come within a tail's length of being an owl's dinner. Listen as a family of mice save the kind tailor of Glouster and how Peter and Benjamin Bunny battle a barn cat. Learn how two bad mice and one fierce rabbit are set on the road to honesty.
Beatrix Potter's amazing universe of animals dressed in human clothing has taught and entertained children for nearly a century. Her love of animals and children is apparent in each of these twenty-one tales.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest childrens books.......2007-04-01

This is a must read for little kids. It's fun, entertaining, politically incorrect, well illustrated, teaches good lessons and uses the English language the way it was meant to be. The high-gloss paper is nice.

    5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book.......2006-11-10

I bought this book for my grandchildren, and couldn't be more pleased. A great introduction to classic children's books. Beautifully illustrated with the original drawings. This is a book to keep and pass down to the next generation.

5 out of 5 stars A staple for every home library.......2006-02-25

How wonderful it has been to get reintroduced to all of Potter's sweet characters. My mom had a small board book collection when I was growing up and I forgot all about these stories. There is just something so warm and relaxing about them. My four year old is loving them (they're a bit too long for my two year old's attention span and she usually wanders away after awhile). However you just can't go wrong with this book--it's a classic and definitely timeless. My only suggestion is that sometimes a "complete" edition is the cheaper route to go, but it does make for a heavy book for little ones to tote around or try to flip through. So if you are looking for something to be a more kid friendly you may want to purchase the individual stories separately.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter.......2005-10-30

The book I received wasn't the same as the one pictured in the listing. It is the same text but it came in a box as opposed to having a dust cover. Other than that I am happy with my purchase.

Revised and updated, this classic potter's volume explains everything from preparation through firing, with stops along the way for detailed coverage of working on the wheel; coiled, slab, and pinch pots; mold making; slip casting; and glazing and decorating. The comprehensive text ranges from basic (wedging and kneading, beginning wheelwork) to advanced (spray glazing, raku firing). The no-frills design of the book packs almost too much information on a page, but the instructions are clear and thorough, the photos (more than 450, all in color) are straightforward and helpful, and the stunning examples of work by contemporary potters provide additional inspiration.

    5 out of 5 stars Potter's Companion best book.......2007-10-06

I have ordered from Amazon.com several times now and each time the item has been shipped right away and in good shape. This last purchase-The Complete Potter's Companion arrived quickly (it was a college class book) and it great shape. The decription stated it was used in excellent condidtion. It most defintely was. In fact if it didn't say used, I would never have guessed. Good job

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-03-08

Very informative with great step-by-step photos also. This book is really good at showing a wide variety of techniques and including historical information that is really interesting.

4 out of 5 stars A good overivew excellent for beginners.......2006-07-14

This book is a nice addition to any beginner potter's library. It is not in depth but offers a wide variety in information that is useful and helpful. It is most definatly in my 'top 10' of pottery books.

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners!.......2005-08-21

I'm new to pottery and found this book to be informative. I also found many creative ideas that sparked my own creativity.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty book, but shallow.......2005-03-21

This is a very pretty book, and it does cover a breadth of material, but it's very shallow. An entire book could be devoted to each chapter. It provides a good overview of what can be done with clay, but in the end, I have to turn to other books to get more than a cursory understanding of individual processes.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Pottery Overview.......2007-09-19

This is a very nice overview of a variety of techniques and some rather complex projects. While it is well illustrated, it isn't for the beginner. I've been turning and hand-building for a couple years (spare time hobby) and there are many projects in this book that I admire but don't quite have the skill set to try to emulate.

I do come back to this book every few months, and always learn something new from it.

If you have other Warshaw pottery books, you may notice the same photos/projects appear in this volume.

Beatrix Potter's four stories that feature Peter Rabbit are brought together in one volume, so that Peter's escapades can be read as a continuous saga. The volume includes the complete text and art from The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies and The Tale of Mr. Tod. I enjoy having multiple tales in one book. The book was in great condition.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful classic.......2006-11-03

This book is a very nice gift. It's of good quality and value for the money.

5 out of 5 stars Repeat orders review.......2005-09-08

Over the years we have purchased many copies of this book from Amazon. Our children were raised on Peter Rabbit stories and loved them. Now, we live in a small town and every time a friend or friends' daughter has a baby we give this Peter Rabbit book as a present for the new baby. Those who have received it tell us they look forward to reading it to their baby. I recommend this book highly.

3 out of 5 stars Classic story and illustrations, awkwardly organized........1999-06-04

There are three stories in this book, the first of which is the Tale of Peter Rabbit. I think that this edition could be better organized, given its intended audience: First of all, you need to be able to read the table of contents to know where one story ends and the next begins. Also, the binding is very tight, making it difficult for the "baby-preschool" age group for which it is intended to flip through at the book independently. In my copy, at least, about half the story of Peter Rabbit is included a second time, presumably in error, after the third story. A small child might do better with a smaller, hardbound version.

5 out of 5 stars Classic story about rabbit family........1998-05-14

This children's classic tells the adventures of mischievous Peter Rabbit. Entertaining read-aloud stories. Author Beatrix Potter was a teacher and wrote this masterpiece for the purpose of delighting a sick child.

4 out of 5 stars Great book to get useful info from!.......2007-08-21

Of all of the books I've bought this is the one both myself and my husband have read and continue to refer to as we go through treatment. I highly recomend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!.......2007-05-15

I loved this book and wished it was the first one I'd found (rather than the last) as my husband and I went through the infertility process. The information was plentiful, was in an easy-to-follow, easy-to-understand manner and would be useful for anyone at any stage of their fertility. I would highly recommend you start here when gathering information about this emotionally and physically difficult process.

    4 out of 5 stars What a help!.......2007-02-10

I bought this book based on the reviews on Amazon. Boy, has it helped! It is clear and not full of medical jargon that is hard to understand. I like the fact that this was written by a woman who went through the process and a fertility doctor. It seemed to be the perfect blend. A must read for anyone going through this!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book, should be required reading for infertility!.......2007-01-10

A friend recommended this book as "required reading" if you are facing any kind of infertility, or seeking treatment. This book went far beond that, and I heartily agree. It helped me understand what I was going through, the many different options, separated fact from myth and was presented in easy to read format. Don't let the fact that a doctor has written this book think it is in clinical terms; he co-wrote it with a patient and it is all very well presented. I was so impressed, I am now seeking treatment with Dr. Daniel Potter, but this is a great book no matter where you live. I highly recommend it!

    5 out of 5 stars Best Ever.......2006-08-16

This book did wonders for us. We tried all the natural methods you can think of, went through 5 rounds of IVF, and absolutely nothing happened. Then, a friend told me how this book did wonders for her (she's now nearly full-term). I did what most people in my position would do -- I bought it online on a whim.

Three months later I got the news that I'm finally pregnant! My husband and I are thrilled!

Do yourself a favor -- if you truly want to be a parent -- don't give up on your dream.

This book discusses all aspects of infertility -- from childbirth to adoption to deciding when "enough is enough."

I have been taught and produced pottery for 35 years. I found this book to be a great informative reference for those just learning the craft and for those who have applied it for years. It was well thought out and full of exact information. It is an excellent resource.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book...........2006-02-22

This is a great book from cover to cover. I would recommend it for anyone interested in pottery/ceramics. It's loaded with full color photos. And it provides a lot of great how-to's. It covers everything from handbuilding to throwing, and slipcasting. Most topics are not covered in great depth, but the author does provide plenty of info to get you going. It has some good recipes for colored slip, and a great reference in the back. The example images alone are worth the price of this book.

1 out of 5 stars Quite a travesty and insult to Beatrix Potter.......2007-05-23

Please do not waste your money buying The Complete Tales of Peter Rabbit with illustrations by Charles Santore. Beatrix Potter would have been heartbroken at the sight of these illustrations and the changes in text and format. If you want to instill memories in your children, do it with ONLY a copy that includes Beatrix Potter's beautiful art and prose. Seek out a copy of Beatrix's that includes HER ART. These illustrations have not a shred of the beauty and form that were originally intended.
It's sad that even one tree was wasted to produce this book.

    5 out of 5 stars tale's of childhood.......2001-05-23

My dad read this title to me when I was very young. Some of my best memories with him are sitting in his lap early in the morning before anyone else was up. I was not always as healthy as I am now; I was always sick with something. I would creep into his lap while he was reading. I remember he'd pull out the "Rabbit book" or the "frog book", depending on the mood I was in. And then he'd read aloud to me while I stared at the beautiful pictures.

There are few books I can say the same for. But this book will make standing memories for children. These were dad's and my stories, and I'll never forget the mornings we spent reading them.

3 out of 5 stars A disappointing remake of classic stories.......2000-10-19

The text in this book differs slightly from the original, and is condensed onto large pages with less pictures. In effect, when reading this book to my child, he wanted to "see the picture", but there was none. We have returned to using the original version which illustrates much more of the action.

    5 out of 5 stars Delightful eye-pleasing edition.......2000-06-27

This edition of the classic has large pages with beautiful drawings of the rabbits and other creatures. What is especially nice about the text is that it introduces higher-level vocabulary words in an exciting adventure story suitable to listeners as young as 3 or 4.

      4 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2002-12-29

This is one of my favorite books. It is not for a beginner. I do a lot of sawdust firing and find this book so inspiring and helpful. If you have some instruction on this firing technique and have an understanding of different clay bodies, this book will enable you to continue to experimenting and improving your results.

      2 out of 5 stars somewhat helpful.......2002-06-24

I was disappointed in this book. I was hoping to find detailed information on firing techniques other than traditional kiln. It did provide this information; however, no detailed information was provided on how to use/position tin to preserve glazing...this was the essential information I was looking for and thought the book would give detailed instructions on how to do this. The book did give good information on a variety of techniques used by potters all over the world, and it was very interesting...but not the "how to" I was hoping for. There was information on building outdoor kilns...and how to fire, which would be helpful to more experienced potters. Not exactly a book for beginners, like me.

      3 out of 5 stars More How-Do Than How-To.......2001-05-29

"Sawdust Firing," through interviews with potters, sets forth how those potters do, rather than stepping through how-to's. This is NOT a book for beginners, except to give a taste of the medium. Brilliant photos of potters' works, 'though mostly UK potters and the editor's own, with a spattering from other countries. The vocabulary is distinctly UK-based, with some terms explained in the glossary. For a US reader, "ceramic fibre" may not instantly translate to "fiberglass," and "bin" to "garbage can." Having said all this, the book is worth the money just for the glimpses of Duncan Ross' work.

4 out of 5 stars Unglazed pottery made accessible.......2000-05-31

This text is a great reference for the potter beginning to work with unglazed firing techinques, and for the experienced potter seeking new ideas. There are slip recipes, definition explanations, and interviews with contemporary working artists. Beautiful photos intersperrsed throughout the text, both color and black and white, illustrate a number of technique results. A variety of kiln assemblies are described, including pit fire kilns and above ground models. Sawdust Firing is an interesting, easy read packed with information and a number of artist's personal preferences regarding their techniques. I highly recommend it to any individual curious about the art - this book makes unglazed firing very accessible, even to beginners.
