Lots of supplies needed!.......2007-06-09
I bought this book because I am interested in collage. My interest lies mostly in ATCs (artist trading cards), and I was hoping to find some techniques here that I could scale down and use.
There are lots of nice examples and instructions, but I found myself getting overwhelmed in some sections. Plus, I would probably have to buy a lot of supplies for some of the projects (especially the ones that involve soldering). I've read through much of the book, and I'm trying to remember what I liked and didn't like about it. What I've realized is that the projects must not be all that memorable (at least not to me) because few examples come to mind!
I suppose, for inspiration, it's an okay book to have. And if you're looking at doing three-dimensional collages or other altered artwork, it's just fine. It just wasn't quite what I was looking for.

What A Fantastic Book.......2007-09-06
I just so love this book. It gets straight to the point, It is incredibly detailed plus for beginners like myself who are new to collage it makes perfect sense.
Thanks!.......2007-08-11
Book was in great conditon, but I purchased the book for a project and by the time it came... we were done with the project.
Lots of ideas in this one.......2007-08-10
Without a question Claudine gives great advice and instruction in this book. Lots of ideas for scrapbooking, collage and just crafty folks. I would definitely recommend her other book "Beyond the Unexpected" as well. She also has DVDs that are awesome for those of us who learn by watching. She's a hoot!
Incredibly Informative Guide.......2007-07-12
Claudine's information is so inspiring, I wanted to stop reading and try each technique immediately. The instructions are easy to follow, the techniques are real creative and the personality she blends in with her writing style made me feel like I was one of her best friends having a coffee break right there in her studio!
Very useful and inspiring!.......2007-06-04
This book is a great source for techniques. Instructions were clearly explained, with photos showing how to do everything. I would definitely buy another book by this author.

Another great McGraw book!.......2005-02-22
Mary Jo McGraw always makes a good technique book and this is no exception. There are lots of good techniques for using walnut ink in here. I had always just used it to stain paper by spraying in on with a spray bottle but here she shows other ways to apply it (like using a brush) and get different antique effects. All the techniques are broken down into easy to understand steps, each with a picture showing exactly what to do. In addition to the walnut ink there are techniques using beeswax, stamping on mica, using napkins, alcohol ink, omni gel transfer techniques, etc. She does all these with copies of antique photos and boy they are just so cool and so easy. So many techniques to play with - this book will keep you busy and learning for a long time. I've had it for a few months now and keep picking it up to try new things. An absolute must have if you like that antique look.
What a Find!.......2004-10-12
I found this gem of a book in the library and now I am going to buy a copy. Why? because it is so full of ideas I don't want to forget a one! Mary Jo's ideas range from modest to WOW! She uses materials in ways I never would have thought of. Inspriring me to use my own vintage pictures on fresh new ways. I can not wait to try the rubber stamping on copper and the photo transfer onto metal. One of my grandfather's was a tinsmith and I am looking forward to doing a picture of him on that metal. I recomend this book to anyone who is looking for new ways to enjoy card making and scrapbooking.
money well spent!.......2004-02-12
I purchased this book for a friend of mine for her birthday...This book is so full of ideas and helpful hints that I was sorely tempted to keep it and bring her flowers instead!!!...If you enjoy great quality pictures, well written instructions and inspiring artsy examples, you want this book in your collection. Trust me, I'm hoping someone gets the 'bright' idea to get me one for MY birthday.

Interesting projects , clear instruction and good sourcing ideas........2006-11-18
These are simple projects - you do not need any more instruction than you get , it's not rocket science. I love S. Evertson too , and own her books as well , but the pictures she provides are often already cut and altered , which is it's own set of problems. So is the re-sizing , at least for me! ( I don't think my printer likes me much.) (I'm also pretty sure it's not the same one she has.) I'm certainly not going to complain , though. Anna isn't as whimsical as Sandra - her style is an eclectic and elegant one. Google her and take a look , see if you like it. I read a comment about these not being "practical" , and they aren't. They're decorative , fun little things to screw around with when you feel like creating something just to make it , I think , instead of bending your mind around the one that's giving your brain a cramp. And you can always pick an item in your home you'd like to modify , and adapt a project from the book to that - pick something that has a pleasing look to it , and go for it!
Anna doesn't use much you can't find yourself the same way she does , other than actually travelling. The materials can be found the same way I find them - go look. Look at thrift stores , garage sales , dollar , craft and fabric stores , antique stores and online. Look for images in the Library of Congress , which is a nightmare of navigating but doable (good maps to download) or get great clipart on ebay. If you're dedicated , and I say this with a smile , you already know that! You can actually google "found objects" and come up with stores that will sell them to you (who knew? I didn't , at least not until just recently!).
Oh , just buy it - it's a fun one.
Good book, but thin.......2006-11-15
I enjoyed this book, which I thought had some inspirational projects and ideas. I like Anna's style and didn't mind that the book includes no "step-by-step" instructions. I do think more photos could have been included (I noticed several duplications) as well as a CD containing the ephemera. A trend is developing now of including clip art in the final pages of craft books. In my opinion, if clip art is to be included, a CD (which costs only pennies to produce) containing the clip art images should also be included. Having to take a book apart to copy and resize pages is not a good thing. I won't be taking my book apart to copy it; so the purpose is defeated.
Yuk!.......2006-05-24
Was disappointed in the ideas. Seemed to be more of an extension of the author's collections, than ideas for the reader. Scanned the book it and put it on the shelf, won't be one that I use as a constant reference.
Visually pleasing but the instructions lacked umph........2006-02-13
I am a great craft book fan and looked forward to receiving this one. It is visually pleasing and even includes quite a bit of ephemera for the reader to use (must be photocopied and not cut because it is two-sided, but that's OK).
My problem was that, with the exception of the intro where the reader is told to 'go to flea markets - and the one in Paris is great' none of the projects had any sourcing guidelines at all.
I also found the instructions were quite bland - meaning they were numbered and typed without any step-by-step photographs - only pictures of the completed projects. Even the descriptions often left you wanting a little more.
Overall - great book as a jumping off point for your imagination; I just wished she shared more techniques rather than a bevy of finished projects.
The best book!.......2006-02-04
This is the first review I've ever written and just had to do so because I keep coming back to this book for inspiration. This is a fantastic book and I plan to add Anna's other books to my collection.

IT'S ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD!.......2006-02-10
I guess being more a fan than a collector of postcards I have a different opinion than some of the reviewers who rated this book so low. Regarding prices, the fact is that on any collectible prices vary widely depending on your location and method of selling. As a long-time collector of toys and comic books, I can attest to that. Thus the criticism about pricing is completely invalid as this is merely a "guide" as any pricing guide is. I also would dispute the claim that many of the cards are in poor condition. Some are but the vast majority are not. We are talking about items that are in the neighborhood of one hundred years old so they are not all going to be in mint condition. I think the editors did a fantastic job of giving readers a very broad cross-section of types and styles of cards, regardless of condition.
Anyway, the book is organized by Holiday beginning with New Years Day. Each section has an introduction and history of cards for that particular holiday which I found to be very informative. For example we learn that Valentine's Day cards were actually the first holiday cards to be widely distributed beginning in the 17th century. And we also learn that the Easter Bunny dates back to 1700's Germany. The book cruises the calendar year hitting every holiday including Arbor Day, April Fool's Day, Memorial Day, etc...
The highlight for most collectors will be the Halloween and Christmas portions. Halloween cards are easily the most valuable and sought after for collectors and I do agree that the Halloween section is way too skimpy at twelve pages (not eight as another reviewer mentioned). Still even twelve pages is slight compared to Thanksgiving which gets some 40 pages. The Christmas section is broken up into Santa and non-Santa parts and again most collectors will be interested in the Santa cards as they bring far more value than the others.
While Postcards for the Holidays isn't a perfect book, it does it's job very well. The photography and post card reproductions are very clear and colorful and the book is produced on heavy, coated stock paper.

Pages come packed with color photos of seasonal cards organized by holiday along with current prices.......2006-01-10
Robert and Claudette Reed's Postcards For The Holidays, 2nd Edition arrived too late for more timely Christmas mention, but since holiday collecting is really a year-round occupation, it's not too late to mention the ongoing reference value of Postcards For The Holidays Identification & Value Guide, which appears in its 2nd updated edition. Pages come packed with color photos of seasonal cards organized by holiday along with current prices. The chapters each introduce with a history of manufacturers and approaches to further the educational teachings.
Second Edition is a Big Disapointment.......2005-12-03
I am really disapointed in the second edition because it is basically a repeat of the first edition. Although there are more pages in the second edition, this books shows the same postcards as the first edition. Also, the text is the same. It's like buying the same book only there are a few new postcards added. The authors did remove pictures of beat up postcards and replaced them with new cards they must have added to their collection, but they never changed the prices of what the cards are worth. Granted, the first book was published in 2002, and the second edition has a copyright of 2006, but every postcard collector wants to see their collection has increased in value-especially the Halloween cards. The values were not even increased by a dollar! The Easter section and Santa Claus sections are lengthier and the cover is attractive, but this is not my idea of what a second edition should be. The publishers and editors should have been more critical. There is not one Winsch or Schmucker card shown in any of the holidays and any collector knows, these are the cream of the crop, especially with Halloween cards. As much as I like the format and appreciate the book being in color, I was really upset not to see more new postcards and a change in postcard values. This shows lack of research and I feel like the book was hastily thrown together. Don't buy it if you own the first edition and hesitate about the second edition. I didn't think it was worth the price being charged.
Such a pretty cover but real ugly when you get to the inside !.......2005-11-11
I first came across this book for sale at an Antique Show where a dealer was selling reference books and price guides. I was appalled at the condition of the postcards pictured in the book! I would not recommend this book to anyone with an interest in learning about postcards other than "don't collect cards in the condition they are pictured in the book" as you would be throwing your money away. I would agree with the other reviews here - the cover is great but the inside is a joke.
"Postcards for the Holidays".......2002-09-14
I could not agree more with the 2 "negative" reviews I saw. I would not have 90% of these cards in my album if I had gotten them for FREE! "Personal taste" aside, to show cards in such poor condition is mind-blowing, especially in a book whose cover promises much more. I'm a very recent collector of Holiday postcards, so I've been buying every reference book I could find. "POSTMARKED YESTERYEAR" by Pamela Apkarian-Russell is a wonderful book. Joe Hohmann, Madia, PA
