Very worthwhile.......2006-12-05
I've been waiting for this book on back order and it was worth the wait! The scenery pictures in the book which have been embroidered (very well) by Sue's students, present a real variety of scenes and what interests me the most is some of them have other skills besides embroidery used, for example, you can create a realistic stone wall - and a gate! I love that kind of creativity because it adds to the picture you are creating and means you can embroider anything at all, not just landscapes. Each secne in the book has information on stitches used, and preparation, eg, some have painted sky or background which adds to the realisticness of the scenes. The scenes are English in case you are Australian or American/Canadian, but the majority just need local flowers added to make it fit your country. Excellent book, can't wait for her other book to arrive!
Inspirational Embroidery Ideas!!!.......2002-04-09
This is an absolutely amazing book. As a moderately experienced embroiderer and fiber arts person, I mostly drew inspiration and instruction from the many color pictures, not just of the author's embroideries, but those of her students! The embroideries pictured are just stunning. What is truly impressive is just how technically simple this embroidery style is. She does provide very complete instructions on the stitches (straight stitches, french knots, and lazy daisies are about as complicated as it gets) but mostly this book is about ideas and artistry. She provides complete directions on one example, but then clearly she wants you to branch out and embroider your own gardens and landscapes. And I was able to! I'm not the greatest artist, but using this book I've been able to create original embroidery designs that look almost as good as those in the book! If you are getting a little tired of cross-stitch or following other people's designs, this is the book for you!

Embroiderer's Handbook : The Essential Step-by-step Guide to Creative Stitches and Versatile Techniques.......2007-10-02
The Embroiderer's Handbook is an excellent reference book for the experienced and inexperienced textile enthusiast. It presents textile embellishment in an easy to follow step-by-step guide with excellent photographs and written instructions. The directions are on individual stitches using various types of thread and ribbon and is not a project how-to book. It a very versatile guide. Embroidery stitches, ribbon embellishments, sewing sequins and beads, hemstitching and canvas work are all included. If I only had one book on the topic, this would be the book.
Excellent recource for the beginner.........2006-10-15
..since every step is shown on beutiful, clear photographs. Under every photo you get the explanation in words too so you know what to do 100%! The instuctions are very clear and easy to understand! The book is full with techniques yet, it's not overvhelming, hundreds of stiches and not just regular embroidery but a little bit of ribbon embroidery too. Therefore I'd recommend this book not only for the beginner but the experienced too since there are so much to learn from! What I really liked was that the author showed at least 8 ways to make mini roses from ribbon! I have never embroidered before but I always wanted to try. I have no one to teach me right now so I've been looking for some books at my local book store as well as fabric stores for a while. My problem with the majority of the beginners books is that the illustrations shown are only drawings and most of the time they are not clear enough for me. What you usually get is one drawing and on that one, you get 2 to 5 steps and they put a number to every step. I didn't like that so I was very happy when I finally came across this book today at the store! I didn't buy it yet since Amazon is cheaper but I can't wait to order soon and start embroider!!!
Best Embroidery Book I Own.......2006-07-03
I'm a senior and I never embroidered. I started looking at books for instructions and a friend of mine owns a copy of this book. I borrowed it and after just a few minutes, I knew I had to own a copy. I love the step by step instructions with pictures. The book gives you alternative names to stitches, hints and definitions of what the stitches can be used for. The details are amazing, and each page is an education. I'd recommend it to all beginners as well as the experienced embroiderer.
Best Stitch Book Yet.......2005-08-02
I saw this book at Barnes and Noble before I purchased from Amazon, so I knew what I was getting. Saved alot of money through Amazon.
This book has excellent photos on how to do just about every stitch that you could think of and some that I had never seen.
Some stitches show 10 steps on how to do them. This book is for the beginner as well as experienced. Highly recommened.

Not what I was looking for.......2007-07-10
I was looking for a book to learn some basic embroidery techniques, and for some simple, fun project ideas that were not too "old-fashioned" or flowery. But this book went too far in the other direction, and was too trendy and sassy for my liking.
Although I did like some of the project ideas and designs, this book mostly spent more time trying to be cheeky and hip (with project titles like "Laptop Dance" for a laptop case design, or "Tie Me Up" for a man's tie project that no man I know would ever wear, or "Wash Your Damn Hands" on a hand towel) than just teaching skills and techniques. It was way too wordy, trying too hard to be fun and funky. The instructions were not very concise or easy to follow, and there were hardly any photos or diagrams to show techniques.
I returned this book, and found a book in my library that is exactly what I was looking for, and will be ordering that instead: "Embroidery Basics" by Betty Barnden.

One of the best smocking books I've purchased.......2000-06-04
I really was more than pleased with this book. It contained so many innovative and creative ideas to use in smocking. Most smocking books contain the usual baby and childen's clothing along with other heirloom items. I teach English Smocking and use this book as a resource for all my classes. It gives people great ideas to build on and many of them can be used for ADULT garments which won't look like maternity clothes. I get new ideas every time I go back to it. It's only drawback is not using more creative fabrics and colors, but if you can get past that, the ideas are refreshing. I recommend it highly.

Easiest to Learn Embroidery Book & Most Creative.......2007-04-21
Wha Hooo! I found my precious & most favorite embroidery stitch book again! When I moved several years ago, this, my most best reference book for embroidery got mislaid. Even with "doodle cloths" of sample stitches I'd learned & used from Enthoven's book, there were some I just could not remember correctly. Sooo many cool stitches I just cannot keep them all in my head. Tonight I found **The Reference Book Above all Others for Embroidery Stitches**, this book is **The One** ! !
I heartily agree with the other reviewers's opinions. I have happily embroidered anything & everything (excluding cross stitch) for 50 years. This book has the easiest to read pictures and explanations of any embroidery book I have seen bar none. If I had to own only one embroidery book, this is **IT** ! !
Enthoven organizes the her book by grouping embroidery stitches by type (straight, knotted, etc.). This makes browsing for a particular style stitch much easier and faster. In addition to clear, easy-to-follow instructions [Yes, even for beginners!], there are wonderful & useful stitches in this book that I've not seen anywhere else except in textile collections of museums. Better yet these rare stitches are not necessarily difficult. For example there is a stitch she teaches from the Inuit technique for making water-tight seams in traditional clothing of sealskin etc. It translates into contemporary embroidery to make an absolutely great method to join materials such as felt, polar fleece and for that matter, just plain cloth. .... And it's beautiful and far sturdier than a blanket stitch.
The Stitches of Creative Embroidery isn't just a list of stitches. Enthoven gives sources and historical background. When she describes how to make a stitch, she tells you **everything** you need to know. She includes how the stitch behaves depending on the spacing/length of the stitch, the weight/size/type of thread and fabric type. This is rarely addressed in most other embroidery books. All of her stitches have detailed illustrations. There are myriad pictures showing variations of stitches, too.
Now just in case that's not enough to convince you that The Stitches of Creative Embroidery is fabulous, read on about the inspiration and creativity this book nurtures and releases in the hands-on reader/embroiderer. In her examples she shows original work of mere mortals: 4 year old's, 12-year old's original & others in addition to antique museum pieces from the world over. She paints springboards of ideas into your mind. She gives you methods to doodle with pen and needle & thread completely original artwork. Nooo you do not have to be an artiste' to do this. Lines & circles, outlines from everyday items ... even a coin are fair game and make wonderful starting points for designs. There is an awesome angel (huge almost tapestry size) that a very young girl did using only a plain running stitch (over, under, over, under like one does to gather an edge of fabric or to baste) and its variations. It is fine enough to compete in any art show yet it's only a series of straight, easy stitches.
The Stitches of Creative Embroidery will take you painlessly beyond the 6 most commonly known stitches: stem stitch, satin stitch, French knot, cross stitch, blanket stitch and daisy stitch. It will lead you into a cornucopia of stitches that gives you a palette of texture and depth those useful but ubiquitous stitches just cannot provide. With this one book as reference I have created and embroidered unique design for everything from elaborately embroidered chambray work shirts (remember when those were popular?) to fine church linens. You can too if you read the book and get out a needle and thread.
I am amazed that The Stitches of Creative Embroidery has not been actively printed and reprinted for decades. It deserves to be. I'm going to stop typing and purchase at least two of these books right now!
Emphasis on the "creative".......2005-04-02
I love this book. This is the book my Grandma had on her shelf when she taught me to embroider as a little girl. When I went back to embroidery recently this is the book I bought. Unlike many modern embroidery books, Enthoven's work proceeds from the premise that everyone can produce their own designs using embroidery. Rather than giving you a series of projects to copy, she teaches an abundance of stitches, and lots of encouragement to explore them. She emphasizes the practice of "doodling" with stitches as a way of coming up with your own designs - something I've found really helpful. I've actually found that I am able to come up with more lively designs with my needle than with pencil and paper.
Something else I love about this book are a couple of photos of Enthoven's daughter's experiments in embroidery at the age of three. It's almost worth buying the book to see her depiction of the Seattle Space Needle! An awesome work!
Wonderful and unusual..........2004-11-28
This is a fantastic book for anyone looking to branch out with embroidery. It includes detailed instructions for creating hundreds of unusual stitches from around the world, along with interesting commentary on the history of and uses for the stitches, ideas for design, and many (mostly black and white) pictures. Enthoven also provides valuable instructional information for both new and experienced embroiderers, and her enthusiasm for the subject is inspirational. Highly recommended!

A sample of simple motives.......2000-04-04
The Guide features many simple yet inspiring motives, especially suitable for beginners. The designs come in styles from all over the world: the geometrical patterns from South America and the elegant shapes from the Far East are easily recognizable. Furthermore, the book offers many much-requested designs such as alphabets, animals, borders and starsigns, all in Eatons wonderful nearly naive style. The charts are handdrawn with colored pencils and are best used in daylight; threadnumbers or fabric instructions are not included.

Go beyond simply stringing beads together--learn to weave them into beautiful textural patterns to create jewelry, bowls, baskets, purses, and even sculpture. With the step-by-step instructions and detailed diagrams in this guide, the seven stitches (peyote, brick, square, right angle, African helix, netting, and chevron chain) and their variations aren't terribly difficult to learn. Although they may take patience and some time to master, even the beginner can produce simple, attractive pieces. Beaders with more experience will be inspired to new heights of invention upon viewing the full-color gallery of spectacular bead weaving creations contributed by various artists to this attractive book. --Amy Handy

various and sundry techniques.......2007-07-19
This book contains most of the beadweaving techniques that I've ever heard about as well as how to combine stitches. While I would call it a reference book, for the most part, it has lots of projects as well. I haven't made any of the projects to date but think the instructions are excellent. If you need to know how to switch stitches in your off-loom work.........you won't be unhappy if you purchase this book.
2nd Best Beading Book.......2007-07-10
I've only found 1 other bead weaving book as good as this one and it's also by Carol Wilcox Wells, "The Art and Elegance of Beadweaving". This one has great diagrams, guidance on what beads and colors to use, and a beautiful gallery of projects to do and ones to be inspired by. It is also a great buy in paperback. My advice is buy both of her books.
creative bead weaving: a contemporary guide to classic off loom stitches.......2007-01-12
GREAT!!! loved it gave great ideas to work with
The best book on beadweaving on the market!.......2006-12-30
I have a bunch of beadweaving books, but THIS is the one I refer to when I forget a stitch or need some technical help with increasing or decreasing. Nice projects and instructions are written clearly. If you buy only one book on beadweaving, it should be this one!
Creative Bead Weaving...........2006-08-19
I love the book. It has lots of beautiful inspiring pieces. It's more of a book for intermediate and advanced beaders than beginners in my opinion, but that doesn't mean a beginner wouldn't get something out of purchasing it. I retun to the book over and over again for helpful tips and tricks and inspiration. I highly recommend it.
